Abstract:Catalytic performances of Mn2O3 nanoparticles for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in bisphenol A (BPA) degradation were comprehensively investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that 10 mg/L BPA could be 100% degraded within 20 min with the dosages of 0.2 g/L Mn2O3 and 0.1 mM PMS. Moreover, Mn2O3 showed remarkable activity in activation of PMS and excellent adaptability in various real water matrices, including river water, tap water and secondary effluents. Based on the radical detection and scavenging experiments, it was found that both radical and non-radical oxidation contributed to the degradation of BPA and O-1(2) was the dominant species in the degradation compared to (OH)-O-center dot, SO4 center dot- and O-2(center dot-). A total of 15 transformation products were identified by LC/MS-MS during BPA degradation in the Mn2O3/PMS system, and degradation pathways via three routes are proposed. Compared with lab-made catalysts reported in the literature, the Mn2O3 catalyst demonstrated its superiority in terms of its high TOC removal, low PMS consumption and fast degradation rate for BPA.
Impacts of hydrous manganese oxide on the retention and lability of dissolved organic matter

Abstract:Minerals constitute a primary ecosystem control on organic C decomposition in soils, and therefore on greenhouse gas fluxes to the atmosphere. Secondary minerals, in particular, Fe and Al (oxyhydr)oxides—collectively referred to as “oxides” hereafter—are prominent protectors of organic C against microbial decomposition through sorption and complexation reactions. However, the impacts of Mn oxides on organic C retention and lability in soils are poorly understood. Here we show that hydrous Mn oxide (HMO), a poorly crystalline δ-MnO2, has a greater maximum sorption capacity for dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from a deciduous forest composite Oi, Oe, and Oa horizon leachate (“O horizon leachate” hereafter) than does goethite under acidic (pH 5) conditions. Nonetheless, goethite has a stronger sorption capacity for DOM at low initial C:(Mn or Fe) molar ratios compared to HMO, probably due to ligand exchange with carboxylate groups as revealed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy–near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy coupled with Mn mass balance calculations reveal that DOM sorption onto HMO induces partial Mn reductive dissolution and Mn reduction of the residual HMO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further shows increasing Mn(II) concentrations are correlated with increasing oxidized C (C=O) content (r = 0.78, P < 0.0006) on the DOM–HMO complexes. We posit that DOM is the more probable reductant of HMO, as Mn(II)-induced HMO dissolution does not alter the Mn speciation of the residual HMO at pH 5. At a lower C loading (2 × 102 μg C m−2), DOM desorption—assessed by 0.1 M NaH2PO4 extraction—is lower for HMO than for goethite, whereas the extent of desorption is the same at a higher C loading (4 × 102 μg C m−2). No significant differences are observed in the impacts of HMO and goethite on the biodegradability of the DOM remaining in solution after DOM sorption reaches steady state. Overall, HMO shows a relatively strong capacity to sorb DOM and resist phosphate-induced desorption, but DOM–HMO complexes may be more vulnerable to reductive dissolution than DOM–goethite complexes.

Stable Incorporation of MnOx Quantum Dots into N-doped Hollow Carbon: A Synergistic Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Enhanced Removal of Bisphenol A

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.
Oxygen-defective MnO2−x Rattle-Type Microspheres Mediated Singlet Oxygen Oxidation of Organics by Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Abstract:Cost-effective and low-toxicity manganese oxides (MnOx) have been extensively used for environmental remediation. However, their unsatisfactory activity and intrinsically poor electronic conductivity hamper the application and leave considerable room for improvement. Utilizing defect engineering and morphology controlling, we herein designed MnO2−x rattle-type microspheres with plenty of oxygen-defective MnO2 nanoflakes vertically aligned on the surface (OD-MnO2−x-RM) as a novel peroxomonosulfate (PMS) activator for bisphenol A (BPA) removal. Benefiting from the proper presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and unique nanoarchitecture, the OD-MnO2−x-RM (40 min) outperformed all other benchmark catalysts [such as MnO2@MnCO3, MnO2-RM, OD-MnO2−x-RM (20, 60, and 80 min)]. The turnover frequency (TOF) of optimized OD-MnO2−x-RM catalyst reaches up to 83.3 min−1, making it one of the best-performing Mn-based catalysts ever reported for BPA removal via PMS activation. More interestingly, unlike other reports, 1O2, instead of OH and SO4−, was found to be the main reactive specie responsible for BPA oxidation. Various experimental and density functional theory (DFT) findings indicate that these surface oxygen-deficient sites with abundant localized electrons not only accelerate the interfacial electronic conduction and charge rearrangement but also favor chemisorption of PMS, however OVs in excess are superfluous and even counteractive for reaction kinetics. This structure arrangement simultaneously optimizes the active site exposure, changes the active species binding, transfer, and activation, which may pave a new path for rationally fabricating transition metal oxide-based catalysts for water treatment.

Abstract:Mn oxides have been proven to effectively promote the direct degradation of organic pollutants without the costly input of energy or oxidants; however, the underlying mechanism involved in the Mn oxide-catalyzed oxidative degradation processes of organic dyes remains controversial. Herein, Mn oxides with various crystal structures were fabricated and their reactivity was evaluated using malachite green (MG) as the target dye. Multiple experimental results revealed that the surface high-valent manganese (Mn4+) and lattice oxygen (Olatt) in Mn oxides play a key role in the degradation of organic dyes. Surface Mn4+ centers mediated the direct electron transfer from organic dyes to Mn oxides and promptly induced the N-dealkylation of MG. The consecutive electron transfer weakened the strongly bound Mn-O and the released Olatt was an important source of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) that promoted the mineralization of organic dyes, accompanied by the surface Mn4+/Mn3+ redox cycle. Impressively, this synergistic mechanism not only showed excellent selectivity and anti-interference in removing MG, but also possessed a wide applicability in degrading multiple organic dyes with distinct molecular structures. This study is believed to advance the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms involved in the Mn oxide-catalyzed oxidative degradation processes of organic dyes and provide a feasible guidance for designing Mn oxides with high efficiency and stability to mineralize organic contaminants.

Abstract:In sediment environments, manganese (Mn) minerals have high dissolved organic matter (DOM) affinities, and could regulate the changes of DOM constituents and reactivity by fractionation. However, the effects of DOM fractionation by Mn minerals on the contaminant behaviors remain unclear. Herein, the transformations of mineral phases, DOM properties, and Cd(II) binding characteristics to sediment DOM before and after adsorption by four Mn oxides (δ-MnO2, β-MnO2, γ-MnOOH, and Mn3O4) were investigated using multi-spectroscopic tools. Results showed a subtle structural variation of Mn oxides in response to DOM reduction, and no phase transformations were observed. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy based on synchronous fluorescence spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that tryptophan-like substances and the amide (II) N-H groups could preferentially interact with Cd(II) for the original DOM. Nevertheless, preferential bonding of Cd(II) to tyrosine-like substances and phenolic OH groups was exhibited after fractionations by Mn oxides. Furthermore, the binding stability and capacity of each DOM fraction to Cd(II) were decreased after fractionation based on the modified Stern-Volmer equation. These differences may be attributed to DOM molecules with high aromaticity, hydrophobicity, molecular weight, and amounts of O/N-containing group were preferentially removed by Mn oxides. Overall, the environmental hazard of Cd will be more severe after DOM fractionation on Mn minerals. This study facilitates a better understanding of the Cd geochemical cycle in lake sediments under the DOM-mineral interactions, and recommends being careful with outbreaks of aquatic Cd pollution when sediments are rich in dissolved protein-like components and Mn minerals.

The Effect of Aeration on Mn(II) Sorbed to Clay Minerals and Its Impact on Cd Retention.

Abstract:Manganese is a redox-sensitive element in soils and sediments that plays an important role in the retention of trace elements. Under anoxic conditions, clay minerals were shown to increase Cd retention by favoring the precipitation of Mn(II) phases. In this study, we investigated the influence of aeration on anoxically formed Mn solid phases and its impact on Cd retention in the presence of two clay minerals with low Fe contents, a natural kaolinite (KGa-1b) and a synthetic montmorillonite (Syn-1). Ca-saturated KGa-1b and Syn-1 were pre-equilibrated with Mn2+ and Cd2+ under anoxic conditions for 1 or 30 days and subsequently exposed to air for 1 or 30 days. The analysis with synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed that extended anoxic pre-equilibration (30 days) partially prevented the oxidation of sorbed Mn(II) (MnSiO3 and Mn(II)Al-LDH). Extended exposure to ambient air and short anoxic pre-equilibration favored the formation of feitknechtite (β-MnOOH) and birnessite (δ-MnO2). Aeration resulted in a decrease of pH and a net release of Cd2+ into the solution, indicating that Cd re-sorption by Mn(III/IV)-phases was insufficient to compensate for the release of Cd2+ due to dissolution of Mn(II)-containing phases and the decrease in pH. Our results demonstrate the significance of clay minerals in the (trans)formation of Mn-containing phases and their impact on trace metal retention in environments undergoing fluctuating redox conditions.

Abstract:Manganese sulfide (MnS) has unique reactive abilities and can affect the fate and toxicity of contaminants in the natural environment, specifically sulfidic sediments that undergo biogeochemical changes due to natural and artificial processes. However, the effect of oxidization induced by the oxygenation of MnS on organic contaminants remains poorly understood. Herein, we revealed that the hydroxyl radical (HO·) was the dominant reactive oxidant for the rapid degradation of the assessed hydrophobic organic contaminants (including azo dye, nitroaromatic compounds, pesticide, and an endocrine disrupt chemical) during the oxygenation of MnS based on the competitive dynamic experiments, quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) methods. The removal rates of the assessed organic contaminants were significantly dependent on MnS dosage and co-solutes, including sediment humic acid, metal ions (Mn2+and Fe3+), and inorganic anions (PO43-and Cl-). HO· scavenging by sulfide and its oxidation products (e.g., elemental sulfur), rather than dissolved Mn2+, was responsible for the low utilization efficiency of HO· for the assessed contaminants. The contribution of the manganese oxide (MnO2) generated by the oxygenation of MnS to the examined degradation of contaminants could be neglected. Considered collectively, the reaction between H2O2 and MnO2 generated superoxide radicals (O2-·) which dominated the generation of HO· in an oxic MnS suspension. The results suggest that the impact of oxidization induced by the oxygenation of MnS on environmental contaminants should be of concern in both natural and engineered systems.

Abstract:Humification plays a critical role in the environmental fate of organic wastes, and MnO2 holds great promise for enhancing this reaction. However, the effects of MnO2 on the enhancement of the humification reaction remain ambiguous. To better reveal the mechanism by which MnO2 enhances the reaction and investigate the fate of the humification products, abiotic humification experiments were performed using increasing concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to a fixed amount of MnO2. DOM was represented by model humic precursors consisting of catechol, glucose and glycine. The results indicate that the reduction of MnO2 played a dominant role in the formation of fulvic-like acids (FLAs), and the subsequent reduction products, MnOOH and Mn(II), acted as catalysts in the formation of humic-like acids (HLAs). Moreover, CO2 release occurred during the formation of FLAs, and a strong linear correlation between CO2 release and the formation of FLAs was observed (p < 0.01), where 0.73-1.87 mg of CO2 was released per mg dissolved organic carbon (Doc) FLAs. Furthermore, the concentration of MnO2 had a pronounced influence on the product behavior, where a lower MnO2 concentration decreased the quantity of FLAs produced. Efficient removal of aqueous organic pollutants by well-ordered layered manganese oxide nanocomposites: Impacts of interlayer spacing and nanoconfinement

Abstract:Although manganese oxide is able to spontaneously oxidize organic contaminants in nature, the slow kinetics limit its application in engineered water treatment processes. Herein, we prepared well-ordered layered manganese oxides (LMOs) with adjustable interlayer distances using cetyltrimethylammonium bromine as a guest molecule, which were applied to degrade 3-chlorophenol as an example of organic pollutants. The ordering of the layered structure was found to be highly dependent on the molar ratio of cetyltrimethylammonium ion (CTA + ) to Mn in the solutions (range 0–1.2). The maximum interlayer spacing (11.27 Å) was obtained at a molar ratio was 1.0 (LMO-1.0), which reduces the steric hindrance for 3-chlorophenol entering the interlayers. Additionally, the surface of the LMOs becomes more hydrophobic as their molar ratio increased, further favors adsorption of 3-chlorophenol on the LMO-1.0. The LMO-1.0 provides a constrained reaction environment, which increases the probability of 3-chlorophenol interacting with the active species as well as promotes the production and enrichment of superoxide radical (O 2 •− ). Consequently, the degradation rate constant of 3-chlorophenol (0.446 min −1 ) is two orders of magnitude higher compared to the unconfined bulk phase (0.004 min −1 ). These findings provide useful insights into the development of Mn-based layered materials for water purification.

Abstract:Manganese oxides (MnO x ), as a class of transition metal oxides, have gained significant attention as effective catalysts in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the remediation of organic pollutants in aquatic environments. This review provides an in-depth analysis of various MnO x types (MnO 2 , MnO, and Mn 3 O 4 ), exploring their distinct crystal structures (α-, β-, γ-, δ-, and λ-MnO 2 ), diverse morphologies (1D, 2D, and 3D), a range of synthesis methods (hydrothermal, coprecipitation, and sol-gel), along with different modification techniques (doping and compositing). This review examines the catalytic performance and underlying mechanisms of various MnO x catalysts within typical chemical-based AOPs. By establishing a correlation between the structural and morphological properties of MnO x and their catalytic activities, this review elucidates the mechanisms driving pollutant degradation, including both radical and non-radical pathways. The influence of critical factors (such as pH, temperature, pollutant concentration, coexisting ions, and the presence of natural organic matter) is systematically analyzed to provide insights into optimizing AOPs for real-world applications. In summary, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MnO x materials and their potential applications in AOPs.

Nanostructured Co-Mn Containing Perovskites for Degradation of Pollutants: Insight into the Activity and Stability.

Abstract:The efficient oxidative removal of persistent organic components in wastewater relies on low-cost heterogeneous catalysts that offer high catalytic activity, stability, and recyclability. Here, we designed a series of nanostructured Co-Mn containing perovskite catalysts, LaCo1-xMnO3+delta (LCM, x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0), with over-stoichiometric oxygen (8 > 0) to show superior catalytic activity for the degradation of a variety of persistent aqueous organic pollutants by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The nature of LCM for catalysis was comprehensively investigated. A "volcano-shaped" correlation was observed between the catalytic activity and electron filling (e(g)) of Co in LCM. Among these compounds, LaCo0.5Mn0.5O3+delta (LCM55) exhibited an excellent activity with e(g) = 1.27. The high interstitial oxygen ion diffusion rate (D-O(2-) = 1.58 +/- 0.01 x 10(-13) cm(2)s(-1)) of LCM55 also contributes to its catalytic activity. The enhanced stability of LCM55 can be ascribed to its stronger relative acidity (3.22). Moreover, an increased solution pH (pH >= 7) generated a faster organic degradation rate and a decrease in metal leaching (0.004 mM) for LCM55 perovskite, justifying it as a potential material for environmental remediation.
The Oxidation and Sorption Mechanism of Sb on Δ-Mno2

Abstract:Manganese (Mn) oxide is considered as a potential regulator of the fate of many contaminants in soil due to its abundance and reactivity. The present study investigated the oxidation and sorption mechanisms of antimony (Sb) on δ-MnO2, by combining batch equilibrium experiments, kinetic experiments and various spectroscopic techniques. The collective results confirmed the high Sb(III)-oxidizing capacity of Mn(IV) sites on δ-MnO2 and the oxidation reaction was proton-driven. However, the oxidation process was gradually inhibited by the accumulation of manganese antimonate precipitates, the production of less reactive Mn(III), and the site-blocking effects of products Mn(II) and Sb(V) on the surface. Different from the direct sorption of Sb(V) by δ-MnO2, the oxidation of Sb(III) destroyed the surface structure of δ-MnO2 and exposed more reactive sites as evidenced by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The stronger Sb(V) sorption along with the oxidation of Sb(III), therefore, could be attributed to several binding modes, i.e., Mn(II) cation bridge, precipitation with Mn(II), along with inner-sphere complexations with surface Mn(IV) and Mn(III) sites. Sb(V) was sorbed at the edge sites of δ-MnO2 forming monodentate mononuclear complex with a configuration of Mn-O(H)-Sb(V) as confirmed by supplementary X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy techniques. The findings altogether help to contribute to a better understanding on the geochemical dynamics of Sb with δ-MnO2 in subsurface environment.
Humic acid changes effect of naturally occurring oxidants on the environmental transformation of molybdenum disulfide nanosheets

Abstract:2H-phase molybdenum disulfide (2H-MoS2) has been considered to be a chemically stable two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial. Nonetheless, the persistence of 2H-MoS2 in the presence of environmental redox-active matrices, such as naturally occurring oxidants (e.g., manganese dioxide (MnO2)) and natural organic matter (NOM), remains largely unknown. Herein, we examined the interplay between 2H-MoS2, MnO2 (a common natural oxidant), and NOM species (i.e., Aldrich humic acid (ALHA) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM)). The results show that MnO2 accelerates the oxidative dissolution of 2H-MoS2, regardless of the presence of dissolved oxygen. The effect of NOM on the MnO2-induced fate of 2H-MoS2 was found to depend on its affinity for 2H-MoS2 and the functionality of NOM. ALHA preferentially adsorbed on hydrophobic 2H-MoS2 nanosheets due to the enrichment of reductive polycyclic aromatics and polyphenolic constituents. The preferential ALHA adsorption counteracted the MnO2-triggered oxidative transformation of 2H-MoS2, as revealed by the cathodic response of 2H-MoS2 (i.e., decreased the open circuit potential by 0.0338 V) and the emergence of reductive Mo‒C bonds at 228.8 and 231.9 eV upon the addition of ALHA. This work evaluated the persistence of 2H-MoS2, illustrating its susceptibility to decomposition by naturally occurring oxidants and the influence of NOM on it. These findings are crucial for revealing the fate and transport of MoS2 in aquatic environments and provide guidelines for related applications in natural or engineered systems for MoS2 and potentially other 2D materials.
Effects of synthesis temperature on ε-MnO2 microstructures and performance: Selective adsorption of heavy metals and the mechanism onto (100) facet compared with (001)

Abstract:The heavy-metal adsorbent ε-MnO2 was produced through a simple, one-step oxidation-reduction reaction at three different synthesis temperatures (25 °C, 50 °C and 75 °C) and their morphology and chemical-physical properties were compared. Of the three materials, MnO2-25 had the largest specific surface area and the highest surface hydroxyl concentration. Its optimal performance was demonstrated by batch adsorption experiments with Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+. Of the three metals, Pb2+ was adsorbed best (339.15 mg/g), followed by Cd2+ (107.50 mg/g) and Cu2+ (86.30 mg/g). When all three metals were present, Pb2+ was still absorbed best but now more Cu2+ was adsorbed than Cd2+. In order to explore the mechanism for the inconsistent adsorption order of Cd2+ and Cu2+ in single and competitive adsorption, we combined experimental data with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the distinct adsorption nature of MnO2-25 towards these three metals. This revealed that the adsorption affinity of the (100) facet was superior to (001), and since the surface complexes were also more stable on (100), this facet was most likely determining the adsorption order for the single metals. When the metals were present in combination, Pb2+ preferentially occupied the active adsorption sites of (100), forcing Cu2+ to be adsorbed on the (001) facet where Cd2+ was only poorly bound. Thus, the adsorption behavior was affected by MnO2-25 surface chemistry at a molecular scale. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of the heavy metals on this adsorbent and offers theoretical guidance for production of adsorbent with improved removal efficiency.

Abstract:Here we first designed, synthesized and compared Ni, Ag and Ce doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves, (Ni-OMS-2, Ag-OMS-2 and Ce-OMS-2) for the catalytic degradation of organic dyes, such as reactive red 2, acid orange 7, methylene blue, and rhodamine B, in the presence of potassium peroxymonosulfate in aqueous solutions. These results show that the catalytic efficiency increases in the order of Ce-OMS-2 < OMS-2 < Ag-OMS-2 < Ni-OMS-2 for organic dyes degradation, which is in accordance with the concentration of oxygen vacancy defects on the surface of materials. Then pH condition and various amounts of Ni-OMS-2, organic dye and potassium peroxymonosulfate concentration have also been investigated for the reactive red 2 degradation. In addition, TEM and XRD have confirmed the heterogeneous catalyst Ni-OMS-2 has been successfully recycled at least 5 times with a very slight reduction efficiency by the simple filtration. We have designed, synthesized and compared Ni, Ag and Ce doped OMS-2, (Ni-OMS-2, Ag-OMS-2 and Ce-OMS-2) for the degradation of organic dyes. And they show the catalytic efficiency increases in the order of Ce-OMS-2 < OMS-2 < Ag-OMS-2 < Ni-OMS-2 for the degradation.
Mn2+ effect on manganese oxides (MnOx) nanoparticles aggregation in solution: Chemical adsorption and cation bridging

Abstract:Manganese oxides (MnOx) and Mn2+ usually co-exist in the natural environment, as well as in water treatments for Mn2+ removal. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the influence of Mn2+ on the stability of MnOx nanoparticles, as it is vital to their fate and reactivity. In this study, we used the time-resolved dynamic light scattering technique to study the influence of Mn2+ on the initial aggregation kinetics of MnOx nanoparticles. The results show that Mn2+ was highly efficient in destabilizing MnOx nanoparticles. The critical coagulation concentration ratio of Mn2+ (0.3 mM) to Na+ (30 mM) was 2-6.64, which is beyond the ratio range indicated by the Schulze-Hardy rule. This is due to the coordination bond formed between Mn2+ and the surface O of MnOx, which could efficiently decrease the negative surface charge of MnOx. As a result, in the co-presence of Mn2+ and Na+, a small amount of Mn2+ (5 μM) could efficiently neutralize the negative charge of MnOx, thereby decreasing the amount of Na+, which mainly destabilized nanoparticles through electric double-layer compression, required to initiate aggregation. Further, Mn2+ behaved as a cation bridge linking both the negatively charged MnOx and humic acid, thereby increasing the stability of the MnOx nanoparticles as a result of the steric repulsion of the adsorbed humic acid. The results of this study enhance the understanding of the stability of the MnOx nanoparticles in the natural environment, as well as in water treatments.

Abstract:Various MnO2 structures have been extensively applied in catalysis. In this study, γ-MnO2, α-MnO2, and δ-MnO2 with corresponding rod, tube, and hierarchical architecture morphologies were prepared and applied for the catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene (CB). The redox ability, H2O activation behavior, and acidity of MnO2 were analyzed using a range of techniques, including TPR, H2O-TPD, XPS, and pyridine-IR. The catalytic activities in CB oxidation were assessed; this revealed that γ-MnO2 exhibited the highest activity and best stability, owing to its enriched surface oxygen vacancies that functioned to activate O2 and H2O, and capture labile chlorine, which reacted with dissociated H2O to form HCl. All the MnO2 phases generated toxic polychlorinated by-products, including CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3, and C2Cl4, indicating the occurrence of electrophilic chlorination during CB oxidation. In particular, the dichlorobenzene detected in the effluents of α-MnO2 might generate unintended dioxins via a nucleophilic substitution reaction.
MOFs-derived Mn/C Composites Activating Peroxymonosulfate for Efficient Degradation of Sulfamethazine: Kinetics, Pathways, and Mechanism

Abstract:Both manganese oxides (MnO x ) and carbon materials hold promise for persulfate activation to remediate polluted waterbodies. However, the aggregation of MnO x during the calcination synthesis and lower activity to persulfate of carbon materials seriously limit their industrial application. In this work, two Mn/C composites (MnO x -NA and MnO x -A) were synthesized from manganese-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) under nitrogen atmosphere and air atmosphere calcination respectively. The prepared MnO x -NA exhibited more excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance than MnO x -A, and almost 100% sulfamethazine (SMT) could be removed by the MnO x -NA/PMS system within 30min. Moreover, the MnO x -NA/PMS system exhibited impressive stability even after 10 cycles and displayed high anti-interference ability to Cl − , ClO 4 − , CO 3 2− , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − and humic acid (HA). In addition, the oxidation system could efficiently remove SMT in different aqueous matrices. Three possible pathways of SMT degradation were proposed according to the LC-MS analysis. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), quenching experiments, and cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed that SMT degradation predominantly occurred through a catalyst-mediated electron transfer pathway. Material characterization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed that the derived carbon species strengthened the MnO x -NA's electron-transfer capability and promoted the uniform distribution of MnO x particles on the carbon materials surface, which significantly improved MnO x -NA's PMS activation performance. This study introduces a facile method for the design of Mn/C composites PMS activator and provides theoretical guidance for water pollution remediation.

Abstract:Various earth-rich transition metal elements such as iron and manganese have been applied to activate sulfite for the degradation of pollutants. However, the redox process of manganese and its role in pollutants removal in the Mn(II)/sulfite system remain unclear. Batch experiment was performed in this study to investigate the manganese oxidation mechanisms and triclosan (TCS) degradation in a mixture solution with Mn(II) and sulfite under aerobic conditions. About 75 % removal of TCS was achieved in the Mn(II)/sulfite (200 μM/200 μM) system at pH 6.0 within 24 h aerobic reaction, and the conversion efficiency was positively related to the concentrations of Mn(II). The addition of Mn(II) led to the rapid depletion of sulfite within the initial two minutes and the rod-shaped MnO 2 was obviously generated in the subsequent reaction accompanied by the degradation of TCS. Quenching experiments revealed that manganese oxide, rather than sulfur radicals, was the major reactive oxidant for TCS degradation, and SO 5 •- and SO 4 •- were responsible for the formation of manganese oxide, directly verified by ABTS method and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. In addition, TCS oligomers (dimers and trimers) were mainly produced through a single electron process between manganese oxide and TCS. The results of this study proved the in-situ formation of active manganese oxide in Mn(II)/sulfite system under aerobic condition, which could induce the transformation of organic contaminants.
