Abstract:Aspheric non-null testing, as an alternative to the traditional null testing, achieves more flexible measurements. However, figure-error reconstruction in non-null tests has always been difficult due to the presence of retrace error. A novel method with reverse optimization is proposed for aspheric figure-error reconstruction in a non-null interferometer. It is a generalized and effective approach based on system modeling and polynomial fitting. An optimization function is set with polynomial coefficients of the desired figure error as variables and those of the detected experimental wavefront as optimization targets. Through the reverse optimization process with iterative ray tracing, the optimal solutions can be extracted and the desired figure error is reconstructed with a simple fitting procedure. Numerical simulations verifying the high accuracy of the proposed method are presented with error considerations. A set of experiments has also been carried out to demonstrate the validity and repeatability of this method.

Abstract:Many optical systems used in the infrared spectrum have, so far, adopted binary optical elements (BOE) to achieve a better performance. Especially, in the middle and long infrared spectrum, binary optical elements are commonly used. Thus, limited by the manufacture technology, the applications of binary optics in the visible spectrum are rare. This tentative research aims at finding the practicability of applying BOEs in the visible spectrum We attempted to replace the reference lens group in the interferometer with a harmonic diffractive/refractive hybrid lens group, expecting that the wave aberration be well-corrected. In this paper, the main procedure of designing a hybrid optical system is introduced with an example of "F2" lens group. After the analysis on the interference pattern and wave front, the comparison between the tested result and theoretical result can be made. It demonstrates that the hybrid optical system is capable of being applied in the visible spectrum. The analysis also discloses that raising the diffractive efficiency is the next step for us to take.

Abstract:We propose a multi-color method for the self-correction of the air refractive index based on the dispersive interferometry of an optical frequency comb. This method can be applied to correct the air refractive index for long-distance measurements in moist air. Optical lengths of multiple wavelengths were obtained simultaneously by the dispersive interferometry of an optical frequency comb. Interferometric measurement results and calculations from the empirical equation of air refractive indices were similar, with a standard deviation of 2.0×10-9 throughout the 2 h continuous measurement period. By applying the multi-color method, correction of the air refractive index with an uncertainty of 3.5×10-7 was achieved.

Abstract:It is a radical but pressing problem to measure the group refractive index of dispersive material both accurately and rapidly in optical engineering field. In this paper, a white-light spectral interferometric system employing a fiber-optic spectrometer is developed for solving this problem. The system takes advantage of the characteristic of fiber-optic spectrometer which can get all the interferometric information by a single shot image without any mechanical scanning. Compared with the traditional windowed Fourier transform, a wavelet transform algorithm is used to directly extract the group delay rather than the phase from the interferogram. Therefore, the new method can provide a simple and fast solution, while still maintaining high accuracy. Based on this white-light Michelson interferometric system, fused silica and BK7 glass samples are measured respectively and the results agree well with the theoretical values over a broad spectral range. At the end of this paper, different mirror positions are used to verify the repeatability of our method.

Abstract:The possibility of applying the focusing method to measure the refractive index profile of polymer optical fibers is studied through combination of the theoretical analysis and experimental verification. The result shows that the focusing method is an easy and feasible way to determine the refractive index of graded-index POFs; however, as the light rays cross each other near the POF boundary, the focusing method is not an appropriate way to decide accurately the refractive index profile of step-index POFs.

Abstract:Aspheric non-null test achieves more flexible measurements than the null test. However, the precision calibration for retrace error has always been difficult. A reverse optimization reconstruction (ROR) method is proposed for the retrace error calibration as well as the aspheric figure error extraction based on system modeling. An optimization function is set up with system model, in which the wavefront data from experiment is inserted as the optimization objective while the figure error under test in the model as the optimization variable. The optimization is executed by the reverse ray tracing in the system model until the test wavefront in the model is consistent with the one in experiment. At this point, the surface figure error in the model is considered to be consistent with the one in experiment. With the Zernike fitting, the aspheric surface figure error is then reconstructed in the form of Zernike polynomials. Numerical simulations verifying the high accuracy of the ROR method are presented with error considerations. A set of experiments are carried out to demonstrate the validity and repeatability of ROR method. Compared with the results of Zygo interferometer (null test), the measurement error by the ROR method achieves better than 1/10 lambda.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have become an essential tool for distance metrology, showing great advantages compared with traditional laser interferometry. However, there is not yet an appropriate method for air refractive index correction to ensure the high performance of such techniques when they are applied in air. In this study, we developed a novel heterodyne interferometry technique based on two-colour frequency combs for air refractive index correction. In continuous 500-second tests, a stability of 1.0 × 10−11 was achieved in the measurement of the difference in the optical distance between two wavelengths. Furthermore, the measurement results and the calculations are in nearly perfect agreement, with a standard deviation of 3.8 × 10−11 throughout the 10-hour period. The final two-colour correction of the refractive index of air over a path length of 61 m was demonstrated to exhibit an uncertainty better than 1.4 × 10−8, which is the best result ever reported without precise knowledge of environmental parameters.

Abstract:High-accuracy self-correction of air refractive index was demonstrated with simultaneous measurement of group and phase indices. Using precise detection of the pulse envelope and the carrier phase with an optical frequency comb interferometer, a method similar to the two-color correction method was applied, but using a light source in a single wavelength region. In this study, air refractive index correction was successfully demonstrated with standard deviation of 8.1 x 10(-8) when the refractive index change was 0.7 x 10(-6).

Abstract:A new two-color heterodyne interferometer using an optical grating was proposed for measuring the refractive index of air. The heterodyne modulation is realized by moving the diffraction grating. The method allows us to measure the refractive index with high accuracy by using a 1.06μm YAG laser and its second-harmonic wave because two beams (the fundamental and the second-harmonic wave) are in common path completely. Moreover, good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be obtained by the heterodyne interference. Using the refractive index calculated by Edlén's equation as a reference, that measured by present method was experimentally evaluated having an accuracy of about 1×10−6 within a distance of 100 mm.

Abstract:Conventional optical refractometry methods are often limited by a narrow measurement range, complex hardware, or relatively high cost. Here, we present a novel refractometry method to measure the bulk refractive index (RI) of materials (including solids and liquids) using lensless holographic on-chip imaging and autofocusing, which is simple, cost-effective, and has a large RI measurement range. As a proof of concept, two compact prototypes were built to measure the RIs of solid materials and liquids, respectively, and they were tested by measuring the RIs of a ZnSe plate and a microscopy immersion oil. Experimental results show that our devices have an average accuracy of similar to 3 x 10(-4) RI unit (RIU) with an estimated precision of similar to 3 x 10(-3) RIU for solids; and an average accuracy of similar to 1 x 10(-4) RIU with an estimated precision of similar to 3 x 10(-4) RIU for liquids. We believe that this cost-effective and portable RI measurement platform holds promise to be used in laboratory and industrial settings. Abstract:In this paper, we present a method for enhancing the measurement capability of refractive index homogeneity for parallel optical components, which phase-shifting interferometry cannot handle with. With the help of wavelength-modulation phase-shifting interferometry, a series of multiple-surface interference fringes are obtained and analyzed by Fourier transform. Based on the fact that the interference fringe corresponding to each interference cavity has its own variation frequency, the wavefront aberrations induced by each interference cavity are obtained and the refractive index homogeneity is then obtained. It is proved by experiment that the enhanced method can measure the refractive index homogeneity of parallel optical components more accurately and conveniently compared with the traditional measurement approach. Therefore, it will have potential application forwards in optical measurement field.

Abstract:High-precision injection molded plastic lenses are gradually substituting the application of glass lenses in advanced imaging and illumination optical systems for their high efficiency and reproducibility. Despite the surface deviation of the plastic lenses having been reduced to micron dimension, the imaging performance of the systems could not be guaranteed. More and more investigations demonstrated that the inhomogeneity of refractive index (RI) variation of plastic lenses was much higher than that of glass lenses. However, the effect of refractive index inhomogeneity on imaging performance is still not well understood, and is not fully considered in the optical design and injection molding process. Thus, an integrated analytical approach was proposed to quantitatively evaluate the inhomogeneity of the refractive index and to reveal its effect on the imaging performance of the optical system. It was found that the inhomogeneity reached 3.44 × 10 −3 , which was three orders of magnitude higher than that of the glass blank (2.80 × 10 −6 ). Both the magnitude and distribution of refractive index variation significantly degraded the quality and homogeneity of the modulation transfer function (MTF) and spot diagram, from calculated imaging performance considering the inhomogeneity. The maximum MTF was reduced by 60 % compared with the design value. Comparative investigation also demonstrated that refractive index inhomogeneity had an equivalent effect on the imaging performance in comparison with the micron order surface deviation. Reducing the degradation of refractive index inhomogeneity provides an efficient way to improve the imaging performance of advanced optical systems.

Abstract:By analyzing the length measurement principle of interferometer, the key of environmental error compensation of interferometer is modeling the refractive index distribution along the measurement optical path. The spatio-temporal coupling models of temperature, pressure and humidity were established through the collected data by sensors, using the block pulse operator method. Then the model of refractive index over time along the optical path was obtained by Edlen's formulation, and the environmental error compensation was achieved. The simulation results of lithography mask stage's movement environmental flow and measurement showed that this method can compensate interferometer environmental error well, and the following residual error was reduced to less than 1nm so that the resolution level was achieved.

Abstract:We numerically analyze the effects of radius and phase shift of phase objects on the diffraction image of the 4f coherent imaging system, a system used for measuring the third-order nonlinear refractive index. The selection of the aperture radius is discussed. We prove that when the phase object radius is 0.1 time of the aperture radius and the phase change of the phase object is 0.57π, one can get the highest sensitivity for nonlinear refraction measurement.

Abstract:A secondary optimization technique is proposed that allows the complex refractive index and particle size distribution (PSD) to be retrieved simultaneously by using the diffuse transmittance (T), diffuse reflectance (R), and collimated transmittance (T-c) of a 1-D spherical particle systems as measured values. In the proposed method, two 1-D experimental samples of different thicknesses were exposed to continuous wave lasers of two different wavelengths. First, T, R, and T-c were calculated by solving the radiative transfer equation. Then, the complex refractive index and PSDs were retrieved simultaneously by applying the inversion technique, quantum particle swarm optimization. However, the estimated results of the PSDs proved to be inaccurate. Hence, a secondary optimization was performed to improve the accuracy of the PSDs on the basis of the first optimization process. The results showed that the proposed technique can estimate the complex refractive index and particle size distribution accurately. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Air refractive index measurement technology based on laser interference has shown great application value in many fields, especially in laser ranging, precision manufacturing and integrated circuit manufacturing equipment. With the help of air refractive index measurement technology, the measurement problems in many fields can be solved. In this paper, the research progress of indirect measurement method, synthetic pseudo wavelength method, F-P cavity method, variable cavity length method and optical frequency comb measurement method are introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of various measurement methods are analyzed. Compared with the indirect measurement method, the direct measurement method based on laser interference technology has higher measurement accuracy. Finally, the current application status of air refractive index measurement technology is introduced, and its future application prospect and development trend are described in detail.

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel approach to resolve the refractive indices of transparent and translucent liquids from straight interference fringes. The optical path difference between the two arms of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer is first derived by assuming a reference plane wave interfering with a plane wave passing through a rectangular cuvette. The analytic expressions for the liquid refractive indices are then deduced, describing how the refractive index is related to the fringe spacings, spatial frequencies, and directions. The structure coefficients in the above formulas are determined from the fringe spacings and directions of the interference patterns of the empty cuvette and the cuvette filled with a liquid of a known refractive index. The NaCl solution and Coca Cola are adopted as the test examples to show experimentally the validity of the proposed method. There is good agreement between the refractive indices obtained from the fringe spacings and direction of a single interference pattern. The sensitivity and resolution of this method are dependent on the structure of the experimental systems and thus can be adjusted in a controlled manner. The proposed method is simple to implement and can be easily extended to other high precision optical interferometer systems.
