Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a prevalent indoor gas pollutant that has been seriously endangering human health. Developing semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors for selective measurement of formaldehyde at low working temperatures remains a great challenge. In this work, silver/tin-polyphenol hybrid spheres are applied as a sacrificial template for the fabrication of spherical mesoporous Ag2O/SnO2 sensing materials. The obtained mesoporous Ag2O/SnO2 spheres have a uniform particle size (∼80 nm), large pore size (5.8 nm), and high specific surface area (71.3 m2 g-1). The response is 140 toward formaldehyde (10 ppm) at a low working temperature (75 °C). The detection limit reaches a low level of 23.6 ppb. Most importantly, it has excellent selectivity toward interfering gases. When the concentration of the interfering gas (e.g., ethanol) is 5 times as high as that of formaldehyde, the response is little affected. Theoretical calculations suggest that the addition of Ag2O can significantly enhance the adsorption energy toward formaldehyde, thus improving formaldehyde sensing performance. This work demonstrates an efficient self-template synthesis strategy for noble metal catalyst-decorated mesoporous metal oxide spheres, which could boost gas sensing performance at a lower working temperature.

Abstract:Indoor air quality detection, especially formaldehyde (HCHO) detection, is of great importance in practical application. A key limitation of promoting gas-sensing devices is the lack of sensing materials with high sensing sensitivity and selectivity. In this study, SnO 2 mesoporous nanoparticles are fabricated by a facile hydrothermal route with a subsequent acid etching process. The prepared samples show high response toward HCHO (133.5, 222.8 for 100 ppm and 200 ppm HCHO, respectively) and short response/recovery time (15/22 s at 10 ppm). The excellent HCHO sensing performance benefits from the comprehensive regulation of the depletion region width, surface area and rich porosity, which is effective for the promotion of surface adsorption and catalyst activity. It is expected that the excellent sensing properties are promising for practical HCHO gas detection.

Abstract:SnO2 nanoparticles are successfully synthesized using a facile solvothermal method without any templates or surfactants at a relatively low temperature of 100 degrees C following an annealing process. As-synthesized SnO2 samples exhibit a uniform nanoparticle morphology with a diameter around 9 nm. The gas sensing properties of the as-fabricated sensor based on SnO2 nanoparticles are carefully investigated and the results exhibit a high response, fast response/recovery speeds, good sensitivity, a low detection limit and superior repeatability for the volatile organic compound formaldehyde at a relatively low operating temperature. The formaldehyde sensing mechanism is discussed in detail and a possible growth mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:The permissible limitation of formaldehyde (HCHO) is 80 ppb in an indoor environment. Hence, the rapid real-time monitoring of trace HCHO is urgent and faced as a great challenge by gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides. To enhance the HCHO sensing performance of gas sensors, mesoporous SnO2 fibers are used to fabricate a bare SnO2 sensor and then the sensor is functionalized with Pd nanodots by a facile dipping-annealing process. The obtained Pd-functionalized SnO2 sensor exhibits a very high response to HCHO, ultralow detection limit (50 ppb), excellent sensor selectivity over other reducing gases, and short response and recovery time to 100 ppb HCHO (53 s and 103 s, respectively) at a low working temperature of 190 degrees C. Herein, the Pd nanodots loaded onto SnO2 fibers serve as sensitizers or promoters, increasing the amount of adsorbates as well as molecule-ion conversion rate and simultaneously providing a new catalytic oxidization pathway of HCHO (HCHO -> [CH2O](n) (POM) -> HCOOH -> CO2 + H2O) accompanied with a promotion in the electron transfer rate, and thus improving HCHO sensing performance. The combination of the SnO2 mesoporous structure and catalytic activity of the Pd nanodots loaded could give us a very attractive sensing behavior for applications as real-time monitoring gas sensors with rapid response speed.

Abstract:A versatile SnO2@graphene nanocomposite with a mesoporous structure was prepared by a facile and green solvothermal method. The nanocomposite exhibited high response to low-concentration HCHO (1 ppm) at low working temperature (120 degrees C). The response and recovery times are 1 s and 85 s for 1 ppm formaldehyde. There is an excellent linear relationship (R = 99.798%) between response and the concentration of HCHO in a large range (1-100 ppm).

Abstract:In this work, SnO2 nanoflowers were prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal process. The morphology and structure of SnO2 nanoflowers were characterized by SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD, which demonstrated the good crystallinity of the SnO2 tetrahedron structure of the as-synthesized materials. In addition, the sensing properties of SnO2 nanoflowers were studied in detail. It was found that the SnO2 nanoflower-based gas sensor exhibits excellent gas response (9.2 to 120 ppm), fast response and recovery (2/15 s to 6 ppm), good linearity of correlation between response (S) vs. concentration (C) (lgS = 0.505 lgC − 0.147, R2 = 0.9863), superb repeatability, and selectivity at 300 °C. The outstanding performance can also be attributed to the high specific surface area ratio and size of SnO2 nanoflowers close to the thickness of the electron depletion layer that can provide abundant active sites, promote the rate of interaction, and make it easier for gas molecules to diffuse into the interior of the material. Therefore, SnO2 nanoflowers can be an ideal sensing material for real-time monitoring of low-concentration HCHO.

Abstract:Formaldehyde, as a harmful gas produced by materials used for decorative purposes, has a serious impact on human health, and is also the focus and difficulty of indoor environmental polution prevention; hence, designing and developing gas sensors for the selective measurement of formaldehyde at room temperature is an urgent task. Herein, a series of SnS2/SnO2 composites with hollow spherical structures were prepared by a facile hydrothermal approach for the purpose of formaldehyde sensing at room temperature. These novel hierarchical structured SnS2/SnO2 composites−based gas sensors demonstrate remarkable selectivity towards formaldehyde within the concentration range of sub-ppm (0.1 ppm) to ppm (10 ppm) at room temperature. Notably, the SnS2/SnO2−2 sensor exhibits an exceptional formaldehyde-sensing performance, featuring an ultra-high response (1.93, 0.1 ppm and 17.51, 10 ppm), as well as good repeatability, long-term stability, and an outstanding theoretical detection limit. The superior sensing capabilities of the SnS2/SnO2 composites can be attributed to multiple factors, including enhanced formaldehyde adsorption, larger specific surface area and porosity of the hollow structure, as well as the synergistic interfacial incorporation of the SnS2/SnO2 heterojunction. Overall, the excellent gas sensing performance of SnS2/SnO2 hollow spheres has opened up a new way for their detection of trace formaldehyde at room temperature.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is one of the most serious threats to human health in modern interior decoration. Thereby, online detection of indoor formaldehyde concentration has become an urgent problem. In this work, the Pt deposited porous SnO2 nanospheres were synthesized as the formaldehyde sensing materials, which were prepared by hydrothermal and chemical reduction methods. The diameter of as-synthesized Pt-SnO2 were centered in the range of 30-50 nm, with the dominant pore size of similar to 10 nm and the specific surface area of 89.79 m(2) g(-1), which provided a raft of passages and active sites for gas molecules to diffuse and interact mutually. Moreover, the experimental results demonstrated that the 1 wt.% Pt-SnO2 exhibited higher response (16.03), high-speed response time (9 s) and outstanding selectivity with exposure to low-concentration formaldehyde compared with original SnO2. The porous structures and catalytic effect of Pt nanoparticles were jointly responsible for the enhancement of SnO2 on sensing performance towards formaldehyde. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Structure‐Function Relationship of Highly Reactive CuOx Clusters on Co3O4 for Selective Formaldehyde Sensing at Low Temperatures

Abstract:Fine CuOx clusters are dispersed on Co3O4 nanoparticles revealing outstanding formaldehyde oxidation properties even at low temperatures (e.g., 75 °C). These enable selective and highly sensitive formaldehyde detection down to 3 ppb in the presence of humidity. Cu+ is identified as a performance descriptor, correlating well with sensor response and oxidation kinetics. Designing reactive surface clusters at the nanoscale on metal‐oxide supports enables selective molecular interactions in low‐temperature catalysis and chemical sensing. Yet, finding effective material combinations and identifying the reactive site remains challenging and an obstacle for rational catalyst/sensor design. Here, the low‐temperature oxidation of formaldehyde with CuOx clusters on Co3O4 nanoparticles is demonstrated yielding an excellent sensor for this critical air pollutant. When fabricated by flame‐aerosol technology, such CuOx clusters are finely dispersed, while some Cu ions are incorporated into the Co3O4 lattice enhancing thermal stability. Importantly, infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, near edge X‐ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and temperature‐programmed reduction in H2 identified Cu+ and Cu2+ species in these clusters as active sites. Remarkably, the Cu+ surface concentration correlated with the apparent activation energy of formaldehyde oxidation (Spearman's coefficient ρ = 0.89) and sensor response (0.96), rendering it a performance descriptor. At optimal composition, such sensors detected even the lowest formaldehyde levels of 3 parts‐per‐billion (ppb) at 75°C, superior to state‐of‐the‐art sensors. Also, selectivity to other aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and inorganic compounds, robustness to humidity and stable performance over 4 weeks are achieved, rendering such sensors promising as gas detectors in health monitoring, air and food quality control.

Abstract:The huge challenge for detection of formaldehyde (HCHO), a toxic volatile organic compound for human health, with ppb level at low working temperature lies in the activation of surface oxygen species of sensing materials. Herein, we have designed in-plane SnO2-Sn3O4 heterojunctions with hierarchical nanoflower morphology for efficient HCHO sensing, and the lattice strains, surface properties as well as the electronic structure around the SnO2-Sn3O4 phase boundaries can be finely optimized. Notably, lattice strain and Schottky junction dual regulation ensures the in-plane SnO2-Sn3O4 heterojunctions with excellent HCHO sensing performance at low working temperature of 120 °C. Particularly, Sn3O4–400 displays high sensing response (Ra/Rg = 621.83, 50 ppm), high repeatability and excellent selectivity to HCHO. Furthermore, geometric phase analysis, multiple structural analysis and DFT calculations demonstrate the lattice strain and Schottky junction dual regulation tunes the surface oxygen properties and electron structure, which facilitate the formation of rich surface O−(ad) species and enhance the interaction between materials and HCHO around the abundant SnO2-Sn3O4 phase boundaries, thus enhancing the HCHO sensing performance. This research provides novel ideas for selecting high-tech sensing materials for the detection of dangerous volatile organic chemicals.

Metal-organic Framework-Derived Porous SnO2 Nanosheets with Grain Sizes Comparable to Debye Length for Formaldehyde Detection with High Response and Low Detection Limit

Abstract:The development of metal oxide semiconductors-based gas sensors that can simultaneously achieve high response and low detection limit towards formaldehyde (HCHO) remains a great challenge so far. In this work, we present the formation of porous SnO2 nanosheets via direct calcination of a Sn-based metal-organic framework that was prepared via a facile wet chemistry method with deionized water as solvent at 80 degrees C. The porous SnO2 nanosheets are found to be constructed by the interconnection of ultrafine nanoparticles with sizes of 4-9 nm, which is comparable to the Debye length of SnO2. The gas sensor based on the porous SnO2 nanosheets demonstrate a broad detection range towards HCHO (0.05-500 ppm), a low operating temperature (140 degrees C), very high response (540.8 to 50 ppm HCHO), extremely low detection limit (0.31 ppb), ideal selectivity, and outstanding reproducibility and durability. The excellent HCHO-sensing performance of the SnO2 sensor could be attributed to the high specific surface area (125.92 m2/g) of the porous SnO2 nanosheets, the ultrafine sizes of the SnO2 nanoparticles, and the presence of abundant of mesopores within the nanosheets. The porous SnO2 nanosheets with excellent HCHO-sensing characteristics may find widespread applications in fabricating gas sensors for detecting ppb-level HCHO.
Nanostructured of SnO2/NiO Composite As a Highly Selective Formaldehyde Gas Sensor

Abstract:To detect low concentrations of formaldehyde selectively, the sensing properties of SnO2 nanostructured are enhanced by modifying with p-type semiconductor NiO. In this study, a nanostructured SnO2/NiO composite was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) peak in 532.4 eV proved that the existence of the SnO2/NiO composite structure increased the amount of adsorbed oxygen O− and O2− significantly. Gas-sensing tests showed that these mixed phases SnO2/NiO are highly promising for gas sensor applications, as the gas response for formaldehyde was significantly enhanced in gas response, selectivity at an operating temperature of 230 °C. The sensor fabricated by SnO2/NiO composite can detect as low as 1 ppm of formaldehyde at 230 °C, and the corresponding response is 1.57. The results of physicochemical properties tests of the samples show that the enhancement in sensitivity and selectivity is attributed to the oxygen vacancies and heterojunction between SnO2 and NiO. The SnO2/NiO composites can be applied to sensitive materials of formaldehyde sensors.

Abstract:The development of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor for low-temperature detection of hazardous gases (e. g., triethylamine, TEA) is highly desirable, but still challenging. Herein, a self-template synthesis strategy for mesoporous Au-SnO2 nanospheres was developed using nontoxic, renewable and low-cost plant polyphenol as a main chelating agent, tin ions and chloroauric acid as a metal source. Because of the strong chelate ability of polyphenol, a stable Au/tin-polyphenol-formaldehyde sphere is obtained and used as a precursor. After direct calcination process, Au-SnO2 materials with mesoporous crystalline framework, uniform diameter (-120 nm) and high specific surface area (105.2 m2/g) are successfully prepared. The mesoporous Au-SnO2 nanospheres are further used for TEA sensing. They show high response (5.16) at a low temperature (50 celcius) toward TEA. The detection limit was 0.11 ppm. The decoration of Au species can effectively decrease the activation energy and lower the working temperature. After integration with Bluetooth, the gas sensor can be used for wireless monitoring TEA with a low concentration (10-50 ppm) and fast response (- 30 s). This proposed strategy can be used for mesoporous noble metal-metal oxides and further boost the sensing performance of gas sensor.

Abstract:In this work, well-defined cedar-like SnO2 hierarchical micro-nanostructures have been successfully synthesized through a facile low-temperature hydrothermal method. XRD, SEM, TEM and HRTEM were carried out to investigate morphology and structure of as-obtained products. The morphology can be tailored by modulating the reaction temperature and annealing temperature. It is observed that the cedar-like SnO2 micro-nanostructure are composed of two parts: the “trunk” and “leaves”. The trunk is composed of a hexagonal-pyramid, and the leaves are constructed by numerous ordered triquetrous nanosheets. As-fabricated cedar-like SnO2 micro-nanostructure based sensors exhibit fast response time (<1 s)/recovery time (13 s), high sensitivity, good repeatability, and good sensing selectivity towards formaldehyde gas at lower working temperatures. A possible reaction formation mechanism of the cedar-like micro-nanostructure and a morphology-dependent sensing mechanism are proposed.

Abstract:During the detection of industrial hazardous gases, like formaldehyde (HCHO), the selectivity is still a challenging issue. Herein, an alternative HCHO chemosensor that based on the tin oxide nanoparticles is proposed, which was obtained through a facile hydrothermal method. Gas sensing performances showed that the optimal working temperature located at only 180 °C, the response value of 79 via 50 ppm HCHO was much higher than that of 35 at 230 °C. However, the compromised test temperature was selected as 230 °C, taking into account the faster response/recovery speeds than 180 °C, named 20/23versus 53/60 s, respectively. The response (35) of the SnO 2 nanoparticles-based sensor to 50 ppm of HCHO is about 400% higher than that of bulk SnO 2 sensor (9), especially when the gas concentration is 1 ppm, SnO 2 nanoparticles also has a higher sensitivity which may possibly result from more exposed active sites and small size effect for nanoparticles than for bulk ones. The gas sensor based on SnO 2 nanoparticles can be utilized as a promising candidate for practical low-temperature detectors of HCHO due to its higher gas response, excellent response–recovery properties, and perfect selectivity.
Ultrathin SnO2 Nanosheets with Dominant High-Energy {001} Facets for Low Temperature Formaldehyde Gas Sensor

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxides (SMO) have been investigated as important gas sensing materials for detecting various inflammable and toxic gases; however most of them are suffered from low response and high operation temperature. Ultrathin SnO2 nanosheets with dominant high-energy {001} facets were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, and the gas sensing properties to formaldehyde (HCHO) were systemically studied. The structure, morphology, specific surface area, band gap and chemical state of the ultrathin SnO2 nanosheets were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Sensors based on SnO2 nanosheets show outstanding gas sensing properties to HCHO vapor at the optimum operating temperature (OOT) of 200 degrees C. The nanosheet sensor exhibit a response of 207.7 to 200 ppm HCHO at 200 degrees C with the response-recovery time of 30 s and 57 s, respectively. Notably, as low as 1 ppm HCHO can be readily detected with a high response value (S-r = 6.1). The excellent HCHO sensing performance is mainly originated from the structural sensitization of large specific surface area, characteristically small thickness and dominant high-energy {001} facets.

Abstract:Great efforts have been devoted on the detection of the volatile organic compounds indoor for human health. The detection of formaldehyde is one of the most important and popular issues for the wide usage of formaldehyde and its toxic. However, it is a challenge to monitor trace gaseous formaldehyde at lower working temperature. Herein, we present a sensor with a significantly improved sensing response and dramatically decreased operating temperature based on porous PtO(2)w/SnO2 microspheres. And the PtO2/SnO2-5 mol% composite shows the most outstanding sensing performance among all products. What's more, the above sensor can detect gaseous formaldehyde in the ppb level (100 ppb) at low operating temperature (100 degrees C). The excellent sensing performance should be attributed to the high catalytic activity of PtO2 nanoparticles decorated on the surface of SnO2 microspheres and the porosity of the composite. Abstract:In this work, nanocomposites of pre-oxidized Ti3C2Tx MXene and SnO2 nanosheets are prepared by facile synthesis and annealing process for formaldehyde sensors. The Ti3C2Tx MXene is pre-oxidized intentionally to avoid further degradation, which is verified with Raman, TEM and XPS. The morphology and structure of the SnO2/MXene nanocomposites are characterized with XRD, SEM and TEM. The gas sensor based on the nanocomposites with 1 wt% Ti3C2Tx MXene achieves high response, low limit of detection, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and superior long-term stability. An optimal response of 38.6 is reached at 160 °C to 20 ppm formaldehyde and a limit of detection as low as 50 ppb is successfully achieved. The sensing properties are dependent on the amount of Ti3C2Tx MXene, and a sensing mechanism has been proposed for the performance enhancement by the synergistic effect between the pre-oxidized Ti3C2Tx MXene and the SnO2 nanosheets.
