Abstract:Dental technology has developed materials for prosthetics that are very similar to natural teeth and offer a good balance between durability and esthetics; however, some of these materials are not very color-stable under the influence of external factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine and compare the color change (∆E00) of different esthetic monolithic monochromatic CAD/CAM materials after they have been thermocycled and treated with staining solutions. The color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer on a white and black background. Five CAD/CAM materials were used for this study—CAD/CAM nanoceramic (GC Cerasmart270), CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), CAD/CAM polymer (Telio CAD), CAD/CAM composite (Tetric CAD) and CAD/CAM polymer-infiltrated ceramic (Vita Enamic). The test specimens produced were divided into groups and were thermocycled in distilled water. They were then stored for four weeks at 37 °C in either distilled water as a control liquid, black tea, instant coffee or red wine. The aim is also to evaluate the color changes as a function of the exposure time of the staining solutions. The results obtained were analyzed statistically. All CAD/CAM materials tend to discolor to varying degrees. Among the factors contributing to discoloration, red wine proved to be the most significant influencing factor. The conclusion from the results is that the color change is influenced by the type of material, the staining solution, the sample thickness, the color background and the aging time.

Abstract:Statement of problem Research on the color and translucency properties of 3-dimensionally (3D) printed definitive resins and the effect of coffee thermocycling on these properties is lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of coffee thermocycling on the color and translucency parameters of the milled and 3D printed materials used for definitive restorations. Material and methods Plate-shaped specimens (12×12×1 mm) of 3 milled (IPS e.max CAD (LDS), Vita Enamic (PICN), Cerasmart (RNC)) and two 3D printed (VarseoSmile Crown plus (VSP), Permanent Crown (PC)) were fabricated (n=12). The brightness (L*), red-green (a*), and yellow-blue (b*) parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after 10 000 coffee thermocycles. The relative translucency parameters (RTP 00 ) and color change were calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula. Stainability (ΔE 00 ) and translucency differences (ΔRTP 00 ) were evaluated. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney U, and Wilcoxon tests. The Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the ΔE 00 and ΔRTP 00 values (α=.05). Results The type of material and coffee thermocycling significantly affected the evaluated parameters at both measurement periods ( P =.001). Coffee thermocycling decreased the L* and RTP 00 values while increasing the a* and b* values ( P =.001). The highest ΔE 00 values were found in VSP and PC, which were statistically similar ( P =.291), while the highest | ΔRTP 00 | values were observed for VSP ( P =.001). The lowest ΔE 00 and | ΔRTP 00 | values were found in LDS ( P =.001). A positive relationship was found between the ΔE 00 and | ΔRTP 00 | values ( R =.590, P =.01). Conclusions After coffee thermocycling, all tested materials exhibited a darkened, yellowish, and opaque appearance, although the alterations in color and translucency remained within clinically acceptable thresholds (AT 00 =1.81) for these materials.

Abstract:Background: Being healthcare professionals, technicians must be aware of the safe disposal of biomedical waste and the recycling of dental materials to reduce biological risks to the environment. Objectives: Aim of the current study to evaluation the PMMA surface roughness and hardness after recycling and reuse of waste zirconia material from the CAD/CAM production method as effective filler. Materials and Methods: The Zirconia fiber was collected from the CAM machine after the milling procedure. Then, standard sieves for ISO standardization no. 40, 60 and 100 were used respectively to reach a fine grain size of 150μm. Zirconia of 1% wt. it was added to the PMMA resin base of 99% wt., Zirconia of 3% wt. it was added to the PMMA resin base of 97% wt and Zirconia at 5% wt. it has been added to PMMA resin base of 95% wt. to reach a PMMA/Zirconia composite of three different filler ratios then compared with Polymethyl methacrylate without additives. The conventional heat-curing method using a water bath was applied to polymerize the disc samples for both surface roughness and hardness tests. The data of this study are analyzed by One-way ANOVA (post-hoc/Tukey test) performed at a significant P-value of (p≤0.05) and a 95%confidence level. Results: After comparing the results, a significant difference was observed in the surface roughness and hardness of PMMA/5% Zirconia composites compared to other tested groups (p≤0.05). Conclusion: The 1%, 3% and 5% wt. of Zirconia -fibers as a filler would be an effective percentage to decrease the surface roughness of the PMMA 5% wt. of Zirconia -fibers as a filler would be an effective percentage to increase the surface hardness of the PMMA.
Evaluation of the Colour Stability and Surface Roughness of Polymethylmethacrylate and Indirect Composites With and Without Ageing: An In-Vitro Study

Abstract:Background: Indirect restorations are a staple restorative option in dentistry due to their versatility, exceptional aesthetics, and desirable strength and longevity. Metal ceramics and all ceramics are the material of choice for permanent restorations but come with certain disadvantages, such as chipping, fracture, and wear of the antagonist tooth or restoration. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and indirect composite resins are commonly used materials due to their favourable properties for temporary restorations, but lately, they have been chosen as the restorative material of choice for implant-supported full-mouth rehabilitations. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the colour stability and surface roughness of PMMA and indirect composite resins under both ageing and non-ageing conditions. This would greatly help a clinician in choosing materials depending on the clinical scenarios. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the colour stability and surface roughness of PMMA and indirect composite resins with and without ageing. Methods: Specimens of PMMA and indirect composite resins were fabricated and subjected to an ageing process involving thermocycling in the TW-C4.4 (Tae-Won Tech, Incheon, Korea) and immersion in a staining solution. Colour stability was assessed using a spectrophotometer (SpectraMagic NX, RM2002QC, Konica Minolta Corp., Ramsey, Japan), and surface roughness was measured using a stylus profilometer (Mituyoto, Mituyoto Corporation, Kawasaki, Japan). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 24 (Released 2016; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York) to determine significant differences between materials and ageing effects. Results: PMMA exhibited significantly higher colour changes and increased surface roughness post-ageing compared to indirect composite resins. The findings underscored PMMA's susceptibility to discolouration and surface degradation under thermal stress conditions. Conclusion: PMMA demonstrates inferior colour stability and increased surface roughness following thermocycling compared to indirect composite materials, suggesting careful consideration in material selection for provisional restorations. Further research should explore additional ageing processes and materials to enhance understanding and improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract:Statement of problem Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials have become popular for dental restorations; however, which materials should be preferred in terms of surface properties after biofilm formation is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of biofilm formation on the discoloration properties of resin-infiltrated ceramic and glass ceramic CAD-CAM materials and human teeth and to examine the effect of the brushing procedure on color change. Material and methods One hundred and six 2-mm-thick specimens were prepared from IPS e.max CAD and Cerasmart, and a total of 53 intact human teeth were used. Five specimens from each group were used to measure the amount of live biomass in the biofilm. The remaining 48 specimens in each group were divided into 4 subgroups: kept in distilled water without the formation of dental biofilm (DW), kept in tea without the formation of dental biofilm (T), kept in distilled water after the formation of dental biofilm (DWB), and kept in tea after the formation of dental biofilm (TB) (n=12). After finishing and polishing the materials, initial color measurements were made using a spectrophotometer, and surface roughness measurements were made using noncontact profilometer. After creating a biofilm layer in DWB and TB, all specimens were kept in their solutions at 37 °C for 24 hours, and the color measurements were repeated. After the biofilm layer had been removed by brushing, a third color measurement was made. The data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-way ANOVA (α=.05). Results The lowest roughness value was observed in Cerasmart. Tooth-IPS e.max CAD gave similar results. The Cerasmart material had the most viable biomass, whereas the IPS e.max CAD material had the least. TB had the highest ΔE1 value for all materials and DW had the lowest ( P <.05). The brushing procedure caused the materials to return to their initial colors or reduce the color change in most groups. Conclusions The presence of biofilm on CAD-CAM materials immersed in distilled water caused an unacceptable degree of discoloration (ΔE>1.8), and immersion in tea led to greater color change. The adhesion of biofilm to restorative dental materials plays an important role in the coloring of these dental materials.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the changes in physical properties and biocompatibilities caused by thermocycling of CAD/CAM restorative materials (lithium disilicate, zirconia reinforced lithium silicate, polymer-infiltrated ceramic network, resin nanoceramic, highly translucent zirconia). A total of 225 specimens were prepared (12.0 × 10.0 × 1.5 mm) and divided into three groups subjected to water storage at 37 °C for 24 h (control group), 10,000 cycles in distilled water at 5-55 °C (first aged group), and 22,000 cycles in distilled water at 5-55 °C (second aged group) [(n= 15, each]). The nanoindentation hardness and Young's modulus (nanoindenter), surface roughness (atomic force microscopy (AFM)), surface texture (scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM)), elemental concentration (energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS)) and contact angle were evaluated. The morphology, proliferation and adhesion of cultured human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were analyzed. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). The results showed that the nanoindentation hardness and Young's modulus were decreased after thermocycling aging. Cell viability and proliferation of the material decreased with aging except for the highly translucent zirconia. Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate exhibited significantly lower cell viability compared to other materials. The surface roughnesses of all groups increased with aging. Cell viability and Cell adhesion were influenced by various factors, including the surface chemical composition, hydrophilicity, surface roughness, and topography.
Evaluation of Physical–Chemical Properties of Contemporary CAD/CAM Materials with Chromatic Transition "Multicolor"

Abstract:The use of materials for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has been rapidly increasing in daily practice. However, one of the main issues regarding modern CAD/CAM materials is their aging in the oral environment, which may lead to significant changes in their overall properties. The aim of this study was to compare the flexural strength, water sorption, cross-link density (softening ratio%), surface roughness, and SEM analysis of three modern CAD/CAM "multicolor" composites. Grandio (Grandio disc multicolor—VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany), Shofu (Shofu Block HC—Shofu Inc., Kyoto, Japan), and Vita (Vita Enamic multiColor—Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germany) were tested in this study. They were prepared in stick-shaped specimens and submitted to different tests after several aging protocols, such as thermocycling and mechanical cycle loading challenge. Further disc-shaped specimens were also created and tested for water sorption, cross-link density, surface roughness, and SEM ultramorphology, before and after storage in an ethanol-based solution. For flexural strength and ultimate tensile strength, Grandio showed the greatest values both at baseline and after aging (p < 0.05). Grandio and Vita Enamic presented the highest modulus of elasticity and the lowest water sorption (p < 0.05). A significant reduction (p < 0.05) in microhardness after ethanol storage (softening ratio%) was observed especially in Shofu. Grandio had the lowest roughness parameters compared to the other tested CAD/CAM materials, while ethanol storage significantly increased the Ra and RSm values in Shofu (p < 0.05). Despite the comparable modulus of elasticity of Vita and Grandio, this latter showed greater flexural strength and ultimate tensile strength both at baseline and after aging. Hence, Grandio and Vita Enamic may be employed for the anterior teeth and for those restorations requiring load-bearing capacity. Conversely, aging seems to affect several properties of Shofu, so its use for permanent restorations should be well-pondered based on the clinical situation.

Abstract:There is a lack of studies comparing the dimensional accuracy and color stability of denture base resins made using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milling, 3-dimensional (3D) printing, and conventional denture processing techniques. This makes it challenging to determine the best method to fabricate complete dentures. The objective of this in vitro investigation was to assess and contrast the color stability and dimensional accuracy of denture base resins that were 3D printed and CAD-CAM milled, both before and after aging by thermocycling using digital surface matching technology and a benchtop laser scanner without using a spray, to optimize adaptation of the denture base and cast to minimize any imperfections and to evaluate the impact of the denture cleansing solution on the stability of color.

Abstract:With recent advancements in digital dentistry, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) processed prostheses have been in very much use recently. This study aims to assess and compare the properties of these materials to better enable the practitioners to select the type of materials for use in a normal clinical practice. This research study was commenced after the approval by our Institutional Review Board (IHEC/SDC/PROSTHO/21/119). Twelve specimens of each group (group 1: CAD/CAM milled prostheses and group 2: three-dimensional (3D) printed prostheses using rapid prototyping) were prepared using the ISO standardization 10477:2004. The flexural strength of the samples that were prepared was tested using a universal testing machine and the values obtained were evaluated. Other samples (ISO standardized) were collected for evaluation of color changes postaging and surface roughness of both groups. Unpaired t -test to analyze flexural strength and surface roughness and Paired t -test was used to statistically analyze the values obtained for color stability. Group 1 showed significantly higher flexural strength and significantly better color stability when the samples were subjected to thermocycling. The mean strength obtained for 3D printed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was 80.06MPa, whereas the mean flexural strength recorded for milled PMMA was 128.32 MPa. There was not much difference observed in the surface roughness of both groups. CAD/CAM milled specimens presented with better color stability and strength when compared to 3D printed specimens. Practitioners should be cautious while using three-dimensionally printed temporary prostheses in the posterior tooth region.
The effect of surface treatments on the color stability of CAD-CAM interim fixed dental prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem: Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is gaining popularity in dentistry, including for interim fixed dental prostheses (IFDPs). However, evidence regarding the color stability of 3D-printed IFDPs is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate whether different surface treatments could affect the color stability of milled and 3D-printed IFDPs after simulated physiological aging. Material and methods: Forty milled IFDPs were fabricated with a 5-axis dental mill (DWX-51D; Roland DGA Corp) from polymethyl methacrylate disks (Temp Esthetic 98, A3.5, 98.5×16 mm; Harvest Dental Products, LLC). Forty 3D-printed IFDPs were fabricated with an in-office digital light processing 3D printer (MAX; Asiga) and light-polymerizing resin (NextDent Crown & Bridge A3.5; NextDent B.V). All milled and 3D-printed IFDPs were allocated into 4 different groups (n=10), according to different surface treatments: Control, Polish, Optiglaze, and Skinglaze. In the Control group, no surface treatment was applied to the IFDPs. For the Polish group, IFDPs were finished and polished with aluminum oxide finishers/polishers (Enhance PoGo Complete Kit; Dentsply Sirona). For the Optiglaze and Skinglaze groups, specimens were first finished and polished and prepared with additional light-polymerizing protective coatings (Optiglaze; GC America Inc, or New Outline Skin Glaze; anaxdent North America). Shade measurements were recorded with a digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade V; VITA North America) before and after the thermocycling for the color stability comparisons. The effects of interim prosthesis type and surface treatments on ΔE∗, ΔL∗, Δa∗, and Δb∗ were examined using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and ΔE∗ was considered as the primary outcome variable. Post hoc pairwise comparisons were performed by using the Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) method (α=.05 for all tests). Results: Milled IFDPs had significantly smaller ΔE∗ than 3D-printed prostheses for the Control group only (P<.001). Within the milled IFDPs, Optiglaze group (mean ±standard deviation, 1.01 ±0.38) had significantly lower ΔE∗ than all the other surface treatments groups (Control group: 2.38 ±0.44, P<.001; Polish group: 1.83 ±0.51, P=.025; and Skinglaze group: 1.85 ±0.78, P=.021). Within the 3D-printed IFDPs, the Control group (3.83 ±0.71) had significantly larger ΔE∗ than all other surface treatments (Polish group: 2.66 ±0.89, P=.018; Skinglaze group: 1.40 ±0.73, P<.001; and Optiglaze group: 1.37 ±0.67, P<.001). The Polish group had significantly higher ΔE∗ than Skinglaze group (P=.009) and Optiglaze group (P=.007), while Skinglaze and Optiglaze groups were not significantly different from each other (P=1.000). Conclusions: For the milled IFDPs, only the nano-filled, light-polymerizing protective coating significantly lowered color changes after thermocycling simulating 6 months of intraoral physiological aging. For the 3D-printed IFDPs, surface polishing and both light-polymerizing protective coating agents all significantly reduced color changes of the prostheses after thermocycling. The protective effect of light-polymerizing coating agents was more substantial.

Abstract:Aims and objectives: To evaluate the effect of coffee thermocycling on color stability and translucency of CAD-CAM polychromatic high translucent zirconia compared with lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Methods: Sixteen rectangular plates (14 × 16 × 1.0 mm) of two ceramic materials (IPS E.max CAD (IEC), IPS E.max ZirCAD Prime [IZP]) were prepared. Each specimen was measured for color coordinates using a spectrophotometer following 30,000 cycles of coffee thermocycling. CIELAB formula was used to determine color and translucency differences (ΔE and ΔTP). The means of ΔE and ΔTP were compared using independent samples t-test and were evaluated using their respective 50%:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds (PT and AT). One-way analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the translucency parameter (TP) and surface roughness (Ra) of each material. Results: Mean ΔE values of IEC (4.69) and IZP (4.64) were higher than the AT (ΔE ≤ 2.7) with no significant difference found between the two groups (p = 0.202). Considering the TP, only IEC showed a statistically significant increase in TP value (p < 0.001). However, the mean ΔTP of IEC (3.25) remained within the range of acceptability (1.3 < ΔTP ≤ 4.4). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this current study, the color stability of all materials was clinically affected by coffee thermocycling. In terms of translucency, only lithium disilicate glass ceramic was influenced by coffee thermocycling. High translucent zirconia had superior translucency stability compared to lithium disilicate glass ceramic.
Effects of thermal cycling on surface roughness of dental CAD/CAM resin composites

Abstract:Objective To investigate the influence of thermal cycling on surface roughness of different kinds of dental CAD/CAM resin composites. Methods Three kinds of CAD/CAM resin composite (3M ESPE Lava Ultimate, AMBORINO High-Class,Upcera Hyramic) , Shofu Ceramage and Upcera UP-CAD were included in this study. The surface roughness (Ra) of these five kinds of materials were determined before and after thermal cycling for 5,000 and 10,000 times respectively. The data were statistically analyzed. Results The Ra values of the three kinds of CAD/CAM resin composite and Upcera UP-CAD did not change after thermal cycling(P<0. 05), while the Ra value of Shofu Ceramage increased(P<0. 001). Conclusion The roughness of the CAD/CAM resin composite and ceramic material tested were stable after thermal cycling,while the roughness of light-cured resin composite increased.

Abstract:This study assessed the influence of CAD/CAM milling and 3D-printing fabrication methods on mechanical properties of 3-unit interim fixed dental prosthesis (IFDPs) after thermo-mechanical aging. Forty 3-unit IFDPs were fabricated on a mandibular right second premolar and second molar of a typodont cast. Samples were fabricated from the following materials; auto-polymerized polymethyl methacrylate (conventional resin), CAD/CAM PMMA (milled resin) and two different CAD/CAM 3D-printed composite resins; digital light processing Asiga (DLP AS) and stereolithography NextDent (SLA ND). Mechanical properties were compared between the studied materials using Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by multiple pairwise comparisons using Bonferroni adjusted significance. There was a significant difference in flexural strength and microhardness between the studied materials (p < 0.001), with the highest mean ± SD reported in the milled IFDPs (174.42 ± 3.39, 27.13 ± 0.52), and the lowest in the conventional IFDPs (98.02 ± 6.1, 15.77 ± 0.32). Flexural strengths differed significantly between the conventional IFDPs and all materials except DLP AS. The highest elastic modulus was recorded in the milled group, and the lowest in the SLA ND group (p = 0.02). In conclusion, superior flexural strength, elastic modulus, and hardness were reported for milled IFDPs. SLA ND printed IFDPs showed comparable mechanical properties to milled ones except for the elastic modulus.

Effect of thermomechanical aging on marginal fit of three CAD-CAM restorative materials: An in vitro study

Abstract:Background: The present study assessed the impact of thermomechanical aging on the marginal fit of hybrid ceramic, reinforced composite resin, and lithium disilicate ceramic. Methods: Eighteen human upper first premolars freshly extracted for orthodontic purposes were used to fabricate 18 CAD-CAM veneers and divided into three groups based on materials used: group H (n=6): hybrid ceramics (Vita Enamic), group R (n=6): reinforced composite resin (Brilliant crios), and group L (n=6): lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e-max CAD). Each material's cementation procedure was carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions. The vertical marginal gap between the laminate veneer margin and the prepared tooth finish line was measured to assess the specimens by digital microscopy. Subsequently, all the samples were thermomechanically cycled (TMC) (5 °C to 55 °C, 30 seconds, 75000 cycles). Then, the vertical marginal gap was re-evaluated. Results: The Brilliant crios group displayed a significantly lower vertical marginal gap mean score (31.36±2.82 µm) followed by Vita Enamic (39.27±6.54 µm) and E max (41.39±3.97 µm) groups. Similarly, after thermomechanical aging, the Brilliant crios group displayed a significantly lower vertical marginal gap mean score (41.83±8.28 µm) followed by Vita Enamic (55.47±18.65 µm), and the E max group showed the greatest vertical marginal gap mean score (59.43±16.27 µm). Conclusion: Thermomechanical aging affected the marginal fit of different materials employed in the current research, and these changes were under the established clinical limit.
Effect of orthodontic bonding with different surface treatments on color stability and translucency of full cubic stabilized zirconia after coffee thermocycling

Abstract:Objective: To assess the color stability and translucency of full cubic stabilized zirconia (FSZ) following orthodontic bonding with different surface treatments and coffee thermocycling (CTC).Methods: This in vitro study was conducted on 120 disc-shaped specimens of FSZ. Thirty specimens were selected as the control group and remained intact. The remaining specimens were randomly divided into three groups based on the type of surface treatment (n = 30): airborne particle abrasion (APA), silica-coating (CoJet), and carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. After metal bracket bonding in the test groups, debonding and polishing were performed. Subsequently, all specimens underwent CTC (10,000 cycles). Color parameters, color difference (ΔE00), and translucency parameter (TP) were measured three times at baseline (t0), after debonding and polishing (t1), and after CTC (t2). Data were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05).Results: Significant difference existed among the groups regarding ΔE00t0t2 (p < 0.001). The APA group showed minimum (ΔE00 = 1.15 ± 0.53) and the control group showed maximum (ΔE00 = 0.19 ± 0.02) color stability, with no significant difference between the laser and CoJet groups (p = 0.511). The four groups were significantly different regarding ΔTPt0t2 (p < 0.001). Maximal increases in TP were noted in the CoJet (1.00 ± 0.18) and APA (1.04 ± 0.38) groups while minimal increase was recorded in the control group (0.1 ± 0.02).Conclusions: Orthodontic treatment makes zirconia restorations susceptible to discoloration and increased translucency. Nonetheless, the recorded ΔE00 and ΔTP did not exceed the acceptability threshold.

Effect of CNC-milling on the marginal and internal fit of dental ceramics: a pilot study

Abstract:Objectives: Machined restorations have been investigated for their preciseness before, while detailed information on the milling-step itself are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this laboratory study was to quantify the effect of a novel milling-procedure on the marginal and internal fit of ceramic restorations. Methods: An acrylic model of a lower left first molar was prepared to receive a ceramic partial crown and was duplicated by one step dual viscosity impressions. Gypsum casts were formed and laser-scanned to realize virtual datasets, before restorations were designed, exported (PRE) and machined from lithium disilicate blanks. Crowns were digitized by a structure-light-scanner to obtain post-milling-data (POST). PRE and POST were virtually superimposed on the reference tooth and subjected to computer-aided-inspection. Visual fit-discrepancies were displayed with colors, while root mean square deviations (RMSD) and degrees of similarity (DS) were computed and analysed by t-tests for paired samples (n=5, α=0.05). Results: The milling procedure resulted in a small increase of the marginal and internal fit discrepancies (RMSD mean: 3μm and 6μm, respectively). RMSD differences were not statistically significant (p=0.495 and p=0.160 for marginal and internal fit, respectively). These results were supported by the DS data. Significance: The products of digital dental workflows are prone to imprecisions. However, the present findings suggest that differences between computer-aided designed and actually milled restorations are small, especially when compared to typical fit discrepancies observed clinically. Imprecisions introduced by digital design or production processes are small.
Comparative Analysis of Modern 3D-Printed Hybrid Resin-Ceramic Materials for Indirect Restorations: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:The study investigated the impact of aging on surface roughness, color stability, and biocompatibility of hybrid resin-ceramic materials. A total of 225 specimens were produced from three three-dimensional (3D)-printed (HarzLabs Dental Sand Pro (HL), BEGO VarseoSmile Crown plus (BV), Voco V-Print c&b temp (VV)) and one milled material (Voco Grandio Blocs (VG)). Specimens were grouped into untreated, polished, and glazed surfaces. 5000 thermal cycles simulated aging. Surface roughness and color stability were analyzed, and surface topography was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Biocompatibility was evaluated with L929 cells. Surface roughness differed significantly between untreated and other groups, with no changes before and after artificial aging. Untreated milled samples were significantly smoother than 3D-printed ones. SEM analysis revealed roughest surfaces in untreated 3D-printed specimens. Polished and glazed specimens were smoother than untreated ones. Color values showed significant differences between untreated and treated/aged groups. No material showed cytotoxicity. In summary, untreated VG was smoother than 3D-printed materials, but polishing and glazing reduced roughness to levels comparable to VG. Surface treatments induced color changes, with glazing causing more changes than polishing. Aging affected color stability and biocompatibility but not surface roughness. All materials showed acceptable color changes and good biocompatibility.

Comparative Analysis of the Color Stability of Machined Denture Base Materials: An In-Vitro Approach

Abstract:Background: Color stability is a crucial aspect in the selection of denture base materials as it directly impacts the esthetic appeal and longevity of dental prostheses. This study aimed to compare the color stability of different denture base materials through an in vitro approach. Materials and methods: Three machined denture base materials including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Acetal (AC), and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) were subjected to artificial aging using a xenon-arc lamp. Color measurements were taken before and after aging using a spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed to determine any significant differences among the materials. Results: The color stability of the denture base materials was quantitatively assessed using parameters such as ΔE values. PEEK exhibited the least color change (ΔE = 2.1 ± 0.3), followed by AC (ΔE = 3.5 ± 0.4), while PMMA showed the highest color change (ΔE = 5.9 ± 0.7). Conclusion: In this in vitro study, PEEK demonstrated superior color stability compared to AC and PMMA denture base materials under artificial aging conditions. These findings emphasize the importance of material selection in achieving long-term esthetic outcomes in dental prostheses.

Abstract:Objective : To compare the shear bond strength values of current CAD/CAM materials and to evaluate the color changes resulting from immersion in coloring solutions. Material and Methods: A total of 160 specimens were prepared from 4 CAD/CAM blocks; lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS E.max CAD[EC]), zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (Vita Suprinity[VS]), polimer infitrated glass ceramic (Vita Enamic[VE]) and hybrid ceramic (GC Cerasmart [GC]). The ceramic specimens were immersed in tea, coffee, cherry juice and distilled water solutions. Color measurements were made. To compare the shear bond strength values, all specimens were bonded to resin cement. Then the specimens were aged with 5000 thermocycling. The failure modes were classified according to stereomicroscope analysis and than scanning electron microscopy images for surface topography were obtained. Results: The color change values were significantly greater in coffee compared to other solutions and the highest color change was seen in GC and VE. The highest bond strength values were seen in VS and VE. The shear bond strength values are listed as follows: VS>VE>EC>CS. Conclusions: EC and VS can be used, especially in aesthetic restorations, due to their high color stability. Additionally, considering the bond strength values of VS, it appears to be a highly satisfactory material.
