Abstract:Because of the different crystallization behaviors of semicrystalline supramolecular polymers (SMPs) from conventional polymers, investigation on the unique crystallization kinetics and crystalline structures of SMPs is of fundamental importance to tune their physical properties and functions in processing. Herein, we chose the multiple hydrogen-bonding 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) group as the supramolecular unit and poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) as the polymorphic polymer block, and synthesized UPy-functionalized PBAs (i.e., UPy-bonded supramolecular PBAs). The crystallization kinetics, polymorphic crystalline structure, phase transition, and lamellar morphology of the UPy-functionalized PBAs were investigated and compared with those of the pristine PBA. UPy end functionalization suppressed the crystallization rate and crystallinity of the linked PBA chains. Compared to the pristine PBA, the UPy-functionalized PBAs preferred to form the thermally-stable α crystals at the same temperature; this was more obvious for the samples with a high content of the UPy end group. The facilitated formation of α crystals in the UPy-functionalized PBAs was attributed to the decreased equilibrium melting temperature. UPy end functionalization also decreased the critical temperature and broadened the temperature range for the β-to-α phase transition of PBA during heating. Due to the segregation of the UPy unit in the amorphous phase, the UPy-functionalized PBAs exhibited larger long periods than the pristine PBA, even though they had a lower degree of crystallinity.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA series of novel polyethylene‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐polyethylene (EUE) triblock copolymers is successfully prepared through a facile route combining the thiol‐ene chemistry, addition polymerization, and coupling reaction. The resulting EUE triblock copolymers are characterized by Nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform‐infrared spectra (FT‐IR), High temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT‐GPC), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the EUE triblock copolymers have been evaluated as compatibilizers in the polymer blends of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE). Abstract:This work reports thermal and mechanical properties of a series of olefin copolymers synthesized by living coordination copolymerization of ethylene (E) and 1-hexene (H) with a fluorinated bis(phenoxyimine) titanium(IV) catalyst. The EH copolymers have ultrahigh molecular weights (UHMW), very narrow molecular weight distributions (MWD) and random distributions of ethylene and 1-hexene units along chain backbones. It is found that both high molecular weight and high 1-hexene incorporation give improved tensile properties, such as high modulus and excellent elasticity, in comparison to commercial polyolefin elastomers. Samples with M-w > 10(6) g/mol and F-2 > 25 mol% do not break even at an elongation of 1700%, and still have recoveries of >95%. An UHMW di-block copolymer containing a crystalline PE block and an amorphous EH block is also synthesized and compared. DSC, TEM and tensile tests reveal some interesting unique properties. Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.
Thermoset Shape‐Memory Polyurethane with Intrinsic Plasticity Enabled by Transcarbamoylation

Abstract:Thermoset polymers are known for their superior thermomechanical properties, but the chemical crosslinking typically leads to intractability. This is reflected in the great differences between thermoset and thermoplastic shape-memory polymers; the former exhibit a robust shape memory but are not capable of redefining the permanent shape. Contrary to current knowledge, we reveal here that a classical thermoset shape-memory polyurethane is readily capable of permanent reshaping (plasticity) after a topological network rearrangement that is induced by transcarbamoylation. By employing the Jianzhi technique (also known as kirigami), unexpected shape-shifting versatility was observed for this otherwise classical material. As the essential carbamate moiety in polyurethanes is one of the most common polymer building units, we anticipate that our finding will have significant benefits beyond shape shifting.

Abstract:Two phenoxy-imine complexes 1d and 2d bearing bulky substituents were synthesized by introducing ethyl or vinyl substituted phenyl to the para position of N-aryl group and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and elemental analysis. The X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed a distorted octahedral geometry of complex 2d. When activated by dried MAO, two titanium complexes exhibited good to high activity (up to 4.5×106gmol−1(Ti)h−1) for ethylene polymerization. Using these two complexes, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, Mw>1,000,000) can be prepared only by changing polymerization time in mild conditions.

Abstract:A series of polyurethanes with quadruple hydrogen bonding recognizing units (Upy units) at both the ends and the middle of the chain was synthesized based on the reaction between hydroxyl group and isocyanate group using polyethyleneg glycol as the soft chain.The polymers formed interlinked network structures due to the formation of quadruple hydrogen bonding and displayed higher glass transition temperature and better mechanical properties with higher content of Upy units.The rheological performance of the polymers indicated that the complex viscosity was depended on both temperature and frequency.Such rheological performance was explained based on the disruption of quadruple hydrogen bonds at high temperature.
Uncommon Melt Rheological Behavior of Hyperbranched Polymers Bearing Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding Units

Abstract:A series of hyperbranched polymers with different contents of ureidopyrimidone(Upy)units were prepared by reacting hydroxyl terminated hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)(HPEA)with monoisocyanato methylisocytosine at —OH/—NCO ratios of 1∶0.13,1∶0.25,1∶0.33 and 1∶0.5,respectively.The melt rheology of the modified polymers was investigated by using a Physica MCR300 rheometer.Due to the formation of self-complementary quadruple hydrogen bonding of Upy groups,the modified polymers demonstrated strong temperature and frequency dependent characters in melt rheological properties,and the dissociation temperature appeared to increase as more Upy units existed in the samples.The results indicated that at the low frequency range,the complex viscosity decreased,the storage modulus became larger as increasing the frequency.However,at the high frequency range,the samples displayed shear-thickening behavior,and the storage modulus decreased sharply to rather low values as increasing the frequency.Meanwhile,the loss modulus seemed to increase as elevating the frequency at all frequency range.Such uncommon rheological performance could be explained based on the disruption of Upy micro-domains by shearing force and the formation of quadruple hydrogen bonds between the released Upy units.This investigation is helpful for understanding the rheological behavior of Upy contained polymers and designing new dynamic functional materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular elastomers based on quaternary hydrogen bonding of ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) groups own special properties such as reversibility, self-healing, and good processability, which can be used in many special fields. In this paper, a novel type of linear polyisoprene supramolecular elastomer (LPSE) was prepared via anionic polymerization by deliberately introducing hydroxyl, isocyanate, and UPy groups into the ends. The formation of supramolecular structure showed significant effects on the microphase structures of LPSE, which was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Results showed that the introduction of UPy groups played a certain role in the improvement of the thermal stability, toughness, and tensile strength of the elastomer. Moreover, from self-healing tests, the hydrogen bonds of UPy showed dynamic characteristics which were different from covalent sacrificial bonds and exhibited the reassociation phenomenon. This study can not only extend our understanding of the toughening effect of strong hydrogen bonds, but also help us to rationally design new and tough elastomers.

Enabling the Epoxy-Based Polyurea with Adjustable Mechanical Properties, Recyclability, and 3D Shape Configuration

Abstract:Thermosetting epoxy resins are frequently restricted by their inferior toughness, nonprocessability, and nonrecyclability resulting from their permanently cross-linked molecular network structure and the rigidity of their molecular chains, limiting the promotion of their additional value. Based on our previous research on the hindered urea bonds (HUBs), herein, we incorporated HUBs with isocyanates into the traditional epoxy network, synthesizing epoxy-based polyurea, namely, EHTPUs. The EHTPUs were synthesized by using commercial raw materials containing HDI-trimers, 2,6-dimethyl piperazine, and difunctional epoxides (E44 or PPGE) without a catalyst. By modulation of the proportion of epoxy monomers, these synthetic EHTPUs exhibit adjustable mechanical behavior, transitioning from soft elastomers to hard plastics. The dynamic HUBs can endow these EHTPUs with excellent recyclability, where their mechanical properties can be fully recovered (above 90%) after four cycles, elevating the versatility and long-term lifespan. Importantly, their dynamic mechanical properties, solvent resistance, and transmittance also can remain stable after four cycles. Meanwhile, the EHTPUs possess elastic shape memory and a 3D permanent shape reconfiguration capability in the same sample. Our work provides a fascinating way to design adjustable mechanical properties, recyclability, and multifunctionality thermosetting epoxy-based polymers, accelerating this category of recyclable polymers toward application and functionalization.

A Well-defined Hierarchical Hydrogen Bonding Strategy to Polyureas with Simultaneously Improved Strength and Toughness

Abstract:A well-defined quadruple hydrogen bonding strategy involving dimerization of 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidone (UPy) units is innovatively designed to prepare polyureas with high overall mechanical properties. Three polyureas containing different amounts of UPy units were synthesized by replacing a portion of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) with a UPy-derived diisocyanate. The formation of quadruple hydrogen bonds in hard segments via UPy dimers was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the polyureas were evaluated by uniaxial tensile testing. Compared to the polyurea without UPy units, remarkable improvements in Young’s modulus, tensile strength, and toughness were simultaneously achieved when UPy units were incorporated. The mechanism behind the strong strengthening effect rooted in the stronger intermolecular forces among hard segments brought by the quadruple hydrogen bonds, which were stronger than the inherent bidentate and monodentate hydrogen bonds among urea groups, and the slower soft segmental dynamics reaveled by both increased Tg and relaxation time of the soft segments. The mechanism behind the strong toughening effect was ascribed to more effective energy dissipation brought by the quadruple hydrogen bonds that served as stronger sacrificial bonds upon deformation. This work may offer new insight into the design of polyurea elastomers with comprehensively improved mechanical properties.
A Cross-linked Polyethylene with Recyclability and Mechanical Robustness Enabled by Establishment of Multiple Hydrogen Bonds Network via Reactive Melt Blending

Abstract:Physical cross-linking by hydrogen-bonds (H-bonds), providing a good combination of application properties of thermosets and processability of thermoplastics, is a potential strategy to resolve the recycling problem of traditional chemically cross-linked polyethylene. However, ureidopyrimidone (UPy), the most widely used H-bonding motif, is unfavorable for large-scale industrial application due to its poor thermal stability. In this work, H-bonds cross-linked polyethylene was successfully prepared by reactive melt blending maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PE- g -MAH) with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATA) to form amide triazole ring-carboxylic acid units. Triazole ring can easily generate multiple H-bonds with carboxylic acid and amide. More importantly, these units are more thermal stable than UPy due to the absence of unstable urea group of UPy. The introduction of H-bonds cross-linking leads to an obvious improvement in mechanical properties and creep resistance and a good maintain in thermal properties and recyclability. Furthermore, the reinforcement effect monotonically improves with increasing the density of H-bonds. The obtained good properties are mainly attributed to largely enhanced interchain interactions induced by H-bonds cross-linking and intrinsic reversibility of H-bonds. This work develops a novel way for the simple fabrication of H-bonds cross-linked PE with high performance through reactive melt blending.

Abstract:2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidone(Upy)telechelic hyperbranched polymers were prepared and their coating performances were investigated.First,a secondary amine terminated hyperbranched poly(ester-amine)(HPEA)was prepared from piperazine and trimethylolpropanetriacrylate at secondary amine/acrylate group ratio of 2.25/1.At secondary amine/isocyanate stoichiometric ratios of 1∶0.3,1∶0.4 and 1∶0.5,HPEA was further reacted with monoisocyanato methylisocytosine to give three modified hyperbranched polymers bearing terminal Upy units.Based on the 1H-NMR spectra of the modified polymers,the degree of modification was calculated,which agreed well with the feeding composition of the components.Due to the formation of self-complementary quadruple hydrogen bonding of Upy groups,the Upy modified polymers possessed improved glass transition temperature(T_g)and decomposing temperature(T_d)compared to HPEA.The coating materials of the modified polymers displayed good mechanical properties.The T_g,T_d and coating hardness became higher as increasing the Upy content.All the coatings possessed impact strength of 0.5 kg·m and flexibility of grade 7.This investigation demonstrated that hyperbranched polymers with improved performances could be obtained via incorporating strong hydrogen bonding,which is helpful for designing new dynamic materials.

Abstract:The organic–inorganic polyureas with benzyl hindered urea bonds (HUBs) and POSS cages as the main-chain structural units were synthesized via polyaddition of 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate with α,ω-dibenzyl diamines including α,ω-dibenzylamino-terminated poly(ethylene oxide), N , N '-dibenzylhexamethylene-1,6-diamine and 3,13-dibenzylaminoanilino double decker silsesquioxane. The organic–inorganic PUreas were microphase-separated, in which POSS cages were self-assembled into the microdomains via POSS-POSS interactions. The POSS microdomains acted as the physical crosslinking points and thus the organic–inorganic PUreas behaved as the crosslinked elastomers; the physical crosslinking remained thermally stable even at elevated temperature as high as 200 °C. In spite of the high thermal stability, the networks can be reprocessed with the plasticity in solids via the dynamic exchange of benzyl HUBs. Due also to the physical crosslinking, the organic–inorganic PUreas possessed the excellent shape memory properties; the original shapes were re-configurable by taking advantage of the benzyl HUBs in the main chains.

Abstract:A hyperbranched polymer (HPE-1) with quadruple hydrogen bonding units was prepared through reacting Boltorn H20 (HPE) with ureidopyrimidinone (Upy) at hydroxyl and isocyanate group ratio of 4 : 1. The structure of HPE-1 was characterized by H-1-NMR and IR. The melting HPE-1 can form long fibers under pulling due to the strong interaction of the molecules, but HPE can't. With both hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and hydrophobic Upy units, HPE-1 self-assembled into spherical aggregates in water. The aggregate become larger in acidic solutions but dissociate under basic conditions, which provides a way for prepaying sensitive material.

This review focuses on the synthesis strategies and applications of polyethylene-based functionalized hyperbranched polymers.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Four kinds of functional polyethylene carrying thioester pendants were synthesized via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of alkyl cyclopent‐3‐enecarbothioate catalyzed by a ruthenium‐based commercial catalyst and subsequent hydrogenation of the ROMP products (alkyl = ethyl, n ‐butyl, n ‐octyl, or n ‐dodecyl). In these polymers the pendant alkyl thioester groups are precisely distributed along the backbone on every five methylene carbons. Chain structure, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymers were characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, and GPC. The ROMP reactions all reached high monomer conversions, and hydrogenation of the ROMP products were exhaustive. Thermal transitions and side chain crystallization behaviors of the polymer were investigated and characterized by DSC and TGA. Glass transition temperature and melting temperature of these polymers were higher than the counterparts containing ester pendants. TGA analysis indicated that all the thioester‐containing polymers exhibited moderate thermal stability, and the sulfur‐containing polymers show slightly lower thermal stability than their counterparts without sulfur. The new family of functionalized polyethylenes could be used as models of ethylene‐thioacrylate copolymers, and find applications as novel functional materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding Supramolecular Elastomers for Melt Extrusion Additive Manufacturing

Abstract:This manuscript describes the versatility of highly directional, noncovalent interactions, i.e., quadruple hydrogen bonding (QHB), to afford novel polyurea segmented supramolecular polymers for melt extrusion three-dimensional (3D) printing processes. The molecular design of the polyurea elastomers features (1) flexible polyether segments and relatively weak urea hydrogen-bonding sites in the soft segments to provide elasticity and toughness, and (2) strong ureido-cytosine (UCyt) QHB in the hard segments to impart enhanced mechanical integrity. The resulting polyureas were readily compression-molded into mechanically-robust, transparent, and creasable films. Optimization of polyurea composition offered a rare combination of high tensile strength (95 MPa), tensile elongation (788% strain), and toughness (94 MJ/m3), which are superior to a commercially available Ninjaflex elastomer. The incorporation of QHB facilitated melt processability, where hydrogen bonding dissociation provided low viscosities at printing temperatures. During cooling, directional self-assembly of UCyt QHB facilitated the solidification process and contributed to part fidelity with the formation of a robust physical network. The printed objects displayed high layer fidelity, smooth surfaces, minimal warpage, and complex geometries. The presence of highly directional QHB effectively diminished mechanical anisotropy, and the printed samples exhibited comparable Young's moduli along (x-y direction, 0°) and perpendicular to (z-direction, 90°) the layer direction. Remarkably, the printed samples exhibited ultimate tensile strains approaching 500% in the z-direction prior to failure, which was indicative of improved interlayer adhesion. Thus, this design paradigm, which is demonstrated for novel polyurea copolymers, suggests the potential of supramolecular polymers with enhanced mechanical performance, melt processability, recyclability, and improved interlayer adhesion for melt extrusion additive manufacturing processes.
Synthesis and Properties of Polystyrene-Based Polyhipes Reinforced with Quadruple Hydrogen Bond Functionality

Abstract:Polystyrene-based polyHIPEs were synthesized by RAFT polymerization and strengthened by introducing UPy groups (2-Ureido-4[1H] pyrimidinone) into polyHIPEs. Incorporation of UPy groups into polyHIPEs has created pores and controlled the porous morphology of resulting material. Meanwhile, the incorporation of quadruple hydrogen bond introduced some pins into polyHIPE. In comparison to the polyHIPE without reinforcement through quadruple hydrogen bond, the porosity of the reinforced sample was as high as 92 % and its Young’s modulus reached to 28.5 ± 3.9 MPa which was improved by 50 %.

Abstract:Constructing responsive and adaptive materials by dynamic covalent bonds is an attractive strategy in material design. Here, we present a kind of dynamic covalent polyureas which can be prepared from the highly efficient polyaddition reaction of pyrazoles and diisocyanates at ambient temperature in the absence of a catalyst. Owing to multiphase structural design, poly(pyrazole-ureas) (PPzUs) show excellent mechanical properties and unique crystallization behavior. Besides, the crosslinked PPzUs can be successfully recycled upon heating (~130 °C) and the molecular-level blending of polyurea and polyurethane is realized. Theoretical studies prove that the reversibility of pyrazole-urea bonds (PzUBs) arises from the unique aromatic nature of pyrazole and the N-assisting intramolecular hydrogen transfer process. The PzUBs could further broaden the scope of dynamic covalent bonds and are very promising in the fields of dynamic materials.
