Abstract:David Nicholas has produced a major monograph on the social and economic history of Ghent, one of the most prominent medieval cities, and one with a long tradition of distinguished scholarship, including that of Henri Pirenne and Hans Van Werveke. Nicholas's study completes his two-volume treatment of the history of Ghent in the fourteenth century and is a companion piece to The Domestic Life of a Medieval City: Women, Children and the Family in Fourteenth-Century Ghent (Lincoln, 1985). In the present work Nicholas surveys politics, demography, charity, and urban social geography before turning to topics of money, wages, prices, industry, commerce, finance, and the local trades of the Ghent economy. His thoroughly engaging discussion of social geography leaves the reader with a sense of knowing medieval Ghent and the Gentenars. Nicholas demonstrates a dramatic decline in the textile industry of Ghent during the last half of the fourteenth century, when the town shrank from 60,000 at its peak before 1340 down to perhaps 25,000 by 1390. The responsibility for industrial decline lay not with rigid guild structures but rather with a failure to respond to the demand for medium-quality cloth. Prosopographical evidence shows that there was considerable mobility among guilds before the fifteenth century; moreover, individuals could declare a profession annually before the urban magistrates. Nicholas's central thesis is that Ghent, faced with a declining cloth industry, changed during the fourteenth century from a cloth-exporting center to one focused on local and regional trade. Further refined, his contention is that "Ghent's economic importance as a center of reconsignement down the Scheldt and provisioning for the interior of eastern Flanders has been underestimated" (p. 178). Not only did Ghent import considerable grain necessary to feed its large urban population, but, strengthened by the establishment of a grain staple, it reexported grain to northeastern Flanders and Brabant. Peat from northeastern Flanders was consumed locally but was also very likely reexported to France in return for grain. "In the beer trade, as in grain and textiles, Ghent evidently linked the trading regions of northern France, Bruges and its clients, Germany, and the eastern Low Countries" (p. 185). Wine also became an important object of reexport. These readjustments of commercial focus mitigated the negative effects of Ghent's dependence on England for wool and France for grain and averted major economic catastrophe. Wholesalers, bakers, shippers, and middlemen such as hostelers and moneychangers profited from this reorientation of trade. Nicholas asserts, in fact, that wealth in Ghent was concentrated in the brokerage of the food trades (p. 97). The political struggles of the weavers and fullers in Ghent and their desperate economic straits are by now the stuff of legend, but their growing troubles in the fourteenth century have to be set against the relative success of smaller tradesmen, geared to the local markets in Ghent, such as brewers and construction workers, whose numbers seem to have been declining less rapidly than the population as a whole. Moreover, the standard of living was actually rising for those still employed in the mid fourteenth century. Nicholas explores the functioning of commercial and real estate markets and the various exchanges in detail. Of note are the extensive use of sureties in business transactions at Ghent and the creation of annuities to extend long-term credit. Nicholas does suggest that by the later fourteenth century the Gentenars lagged behind the Italians in advanced financial and commercial techniques.
