Abstract:As one of the most eminent business groups in Chinese history, Chaoshan merchants have left footprints in a great many of places throughout the world and built up world-wide Chaozhou guild halls, sites with multiple functions range from supporting their countrymen, worshiping the gods in Chaoshan culture, dealing with commercial issues to holding many other activities that strengthen the cultural identity of the Chaoshan people. The historical sites can still be seen in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Guangzhou, Shantou, Hongkong and other cities in China as well as quantities of overseas districts. This essay will take some of the Chaozhou guild halls as research subject to examine how the buildings serve as social bond and how the social functions of the architectures are related to the cohesiveness. This essay argues that the construction of the Chaozhou guild halls root in Chaoshan people’s idea of solidarity, but the power of intensifying Chanshan people’s cultural identity lies heavily on the constructions’ social functions, in that the daily life, decision, and action of Chaoshan merchants are made to associate with the place closely. Numerous historical events took place in the guild halls engage into historical progression, and the guilds halls evolved into the chamber of commerce after establishment of the People’s Republic of China, which indicates the significance of looking at the historical architectures from the perspective of cultural studies.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urban modernization in China, many historical and cultural relics are facing new challenges. The protection of ancient architecture and culture has become a very important issue in the current urban construction process. The symposium on the research project of the Grand Canal Cultural Heritage Protection Regulations in 2022 was held in Liaocheng. As an important part of the canal culture, the Shanshan Guild Hall is an indispensable key link in the inheritance of the Grand Canal culture. The artistic style, many carving techniques and cultural connotations expressed by it have important historical, cultural and artistic research valued for us. Taking the traditional carving of the Shanshan Guild Hall as the starting point, this paper digs deep into the rich connotation brought by the culture of the Grand Canal from the aspects of carving type, decorative style and theme content, discusses the characteristics of traditional architectural decorative art, and inherits and develops it.

Abstract:Recently,relavant goverment authorities in Hangzhou are pondering over reserving and enhancing traditional culture of Hefang historical block with Huqingyutang as the core,and the way of expressing regional culture and traditional culture is the hot point of modern design.In this context,this paper summarizes three arrangement methods of space structure in the merchant buildings in Hangzhou at the late Qing Dynasty and Early Republic of China.It further illustrates the general space structure,the function division organization,the application of compound space of Huqingyutang ancient building group,and the influence of the space structure of Huqingyutang to the subsequent buildings.At last,it introduces the changing process of the space structure of Huqingyutang ancient building groupin a century after its foundation.

Abstract:Due to its special geographical conditions, Guangdong has absorbed the essence of the Central Plains Han culture and characteristics of foreign cultures, resulting in architecture in which traditional buildings exhibit unique regional cultural connotations. The architectural design is adapted to the needs of nature and ecology and the arts and humanities. This paper investigates the technical process of using local materials to obtain structural materials. Traditional Guangdong buildings use patios, cold alleys and doors as well as windows in a comprehensive manner to create an energy-saving and environmentally friendly ventilation design, which was analyzed here. In addition, we study the floor plans and artistic characteristics of traditional buildings in different regions of Guangdong. Traditional Guangdong buildings realize the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, as well as embody the concept of sustainable development. Traditional buildings integrate benefits and efficiency while condensing the surpassing wisdom and rich experience of craftsmen from ancient times to the present. Thus, it is worthwhile to research the connotation of traditional buildings to develop modern architectures.

Abstract:Buildings are important contents in the private gardens in Beijing, with various forms including hall, study, pavilion, tower, gaily-painted pleasure-boat, theatre, altar and shrine and so on. The gardens have facilities like door, corridor, bridge, and wall of various forms. All of them were constructed according to the north administrational style of architecture, so that these gardens are widely different from the ones in South China in their fine materials, elegant shape, rich colors, and well integration with plants. Based on a lot of examples, the characters of the buildings in the private gardens in Beijing are analyzed, and their general style is explored and summarized.

Abstract:Various terrain of Tibet Plateau brings distinctive colorful traditional buildings. This article analyzes ancient and modern architecture in Lhasa from two clues, in lengthways from the time change to analyze tradition inheritance and evolution while in breadthways go deep into the characteristic of the space, structure, material, color, etc. It describes distinctive form of the doors and windows and analyzes their origin. Through analyzing examples such as Tibet Museum and Lhasa Railway Station, it reveals the development of modern Lhasa buildings from appearance imitation to culture annotation.

Abstract:Since there are rare textual materials and architectonic illustrations of architecture and courtyards about before the Tang Dynasty could be found,the peculiar annular building of the Sui Dynasty found in Dunhuang Murals which were vividly reflecting beauty of group of architectural arrangement had afforded great value for research.By a comparative study view,this article attempts to interpreting the architectonic illustrations of the Sui Dynasty in Mogao grottoes from the three levels:single building;a group of complex buildings and courtyard,and tries to had a better understanding of the Sui Dynasty' s developed technology of wooden construction, mature thinking of architectonic complex and arrangement of courtyard layout.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the cluster analysis algorithm, this paper collects a large amount of sample data from Huizhou buildings and groups these samples using the cluster analysis algorithm so as to identify different categories of architectural culture types. By dividing the group similarity of each category of buildings, the village cultural characteristics related to each category of buildings are extracted, including information on architectural style, structural features, decorative elements and so on. The results show that the automatic cultural classification feature values are 1.2, 2.5, and 2.9, which highlight the unique characteristics of the Huizhou village culture. Especially in Hongcun and Pai Fang Lane buildings, the cultural features are more significant, with matrix classification degrees of 4.7 and 4.022, respectively, fully highlighting the cultural heritage of these buildings. In addition, the clustering analysis algorithm has only a 9.5% error rate, and the classification accuracies all exceed the high level of 0.9, showing its excellent performance in the extraction of various cultural features.

Abstract:Three courtyards nine halls is an important cultural asset in eastern Zhejiang. This paper takes Three courtyards nine halls dwellings in the eastern part of Zhejiang province of China as the research object, collecting data with field research, measurement, interviews and other research methods, to analyze the spatial characteristics and construction culture of traditional dwellings. Research findings: First, influenced by the natural environment, artificial environment and social environment, three courtyards nine halls is a complex of residential buildings with san-ho-yuan as a unit, extending vertically and horizontally. Second, with the influences of the Confucian culture, the architectural layout is symmetrically distributed along the central axis, and the architectural space presents a high degree of consistency. Third, the architectural complex was formed by the same clan. The last one is that the architectural form and culture show consistency, which implies the idea of harmony between man and nature, the farming and studying hand down from generation to generation. On the one hand, with the acceleration of the urbanization process, living conditions have been greatly improved. On the other hand, due to the weak awareness of residents’ protection of traditional residential cultural assets, lack of systematic study on traditional residential construction methods, construction techniques and space culture, new buildings are not in harmony with traditional dwellings, therefore, traditional dwellings are seriously damaged. This paper discusses the sustainable development of traditional residential culture by studying the construction and environmental elements of Three courtyards nine halls, taking the residential space as a principal part to analyze the characteristics, functional attributes, organizational principles, order, and sense of place.
