Abstract:Armoured dinosaurs are well known for their evolution of specialized tail weapons-paired tail spikes in stegosaurs and heavy tail clubs in advanced ankylosaurs1. Armoured dinosaurs from southern Gondwana are rare and enigmatic, but probably include the earliest branches of Ankylosauria2-4. Here we describe a mostly complete, semi-articulated skeleton of a small (approximately 2 m) armoured dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period of Magallanes in southernmost Chile, a region that is biogeographically related to West Antarctica5. Stegouros elengassen gen. et sp. nov. evolved a large tail weapon unlike any dinosaur: a flat, frond-like structure formed by seven pairs of laterally projecting osteoderms encasing the distal half of the tail. Stegouros shows ankylosaurian cranial characters, but a largely ancestral postcranial skeleton, with some stegosaur-like characters. Phylogenetic analyses placed Stegouros in Ankylosauria; specifically, it is related to Kunbarrasaurus from Australia6 and Antarctopelta from Antarctica7, forming a clade of Gondwanan ankylosaurs that split earliest from all other ankylosaurs. The large osteoderms and specialized tail vertebrae in Antarctopelta suggest that it had a tail weapon similar to Stegouros. We propose a new clade, the Parankylosauria, to include the first ancestor of Stegouros-but not Ankylosaurus-and all descendants of that ancestor.

Abstract:Ankylosaurines are the iconic armoured dinosaurs that characterize terrestrial vertebrate faunas in the Late Cretaceous of Asia and Laramidia (western North America). The earliest members of this clade are known from the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Santonian) times of Asia, but little consensus has emerged as to how they are related to the anatomically derived and chronologically younger forms. In southeastern China, the Cretaceous red sand beds crop out across basins from Zhejiang to Guandong provinces. However, the horizons corresponding to the early Late Cretaceous stages remain poorly sampled. Here, we report the first definitive vertebrate skeleton 3⁄4 let alone that of an armoured dinosaur 3⁄4 from the Coniacian/Turonian Ganzhou Formation, Datai yinliangis gen. et sp. nov. Despite the immature ontogenetic status of the type materials, D. yingliangis can be diagnosed with autapomorphic traits in the cranial caputegulae (such as double horns on the quadratojugal) and extensive gular osteoderms. Morphologically, it is intermediate between the chronologically older ankylosaurids from Asia (e.g., Crichtonpelta and Jinyunpelta) and derived post-Cenomanian ankylosaurines (e.g., Pinacosaurus). Phylogenetic analyses broadly corroborate this assessment. The new taxon either falls in the grade of Asian ankylosaurines proximal to the lineages of derived forms or forms a sister lineage to Pinacosaurus. Based on these insights, Datai makes a significant addition to the early Late Cretaceous vertebrate fauna from southeastern China and highlights the future potential in this region for improved understanding of the origin and early evolution of ankylosaurines.

Abstract:Bipedal ornithischian dinosaurs from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation are rare, forming only about 15% of the dinosaur specimens. Nevertheless, one of them was among the first dinosaurs named from what was then the ‘’Atlantosaurus Beds’’ of Colorado. Collecting and restudy for 140 years has increased the diversity from the initial 1877 discovery to the currently valid four genera and six species, viz., Fruitadens haagaroum, Nanosaurus agilis, Camptosaurus dispar, C. aphanoecetes, Dryosaurus altus, and D. elderae, which we briefly review. We demonstrate that the enigmatic Nanosaurus agilis is the senior name for Drinker nisti, Othnielosaurus consors, and Othnielia rex. In addition, a new species, Dryosaurus elderae is proposed for the Dryosaurus specimens from Dinosaur National Monument that are characterized by elongate cervical verebrae and a long, low ilium among other features.

Abstract:Although the sauropod dinosaurs have been recognised for more than a hundred and sixty years, much remains to be discovered and understood about their functional anatomy and palaeobiology. Older taxa require revision and new taxa await description. The characteristic long necks of sauropods are mechanically perplexing and their evolution is obscure. All these issues are addressed herein. The genus Brachiosaurus is represented by the American type species B. altithorax and the better known African species B. brancai. However, examination of the overlapping material shows 26 differences between the species. B. brancai must be removed from Brachiosaurus and referred to the genus Giraffatitan, which has been previously proposed for it. Xenoposeidon proneneukos is a new neosauropod from the Lower Cretaceous Hastings Bed Group, known from a single partial dorsal vertebra. The excellent preservation of the Xenoposeidon holotype reveals six unique characters. The distinctive morphology suggests that Xenoposeidon may represent a new sauropod family, extending sauropod disparity as well as bringing to four the number of sauropod families known from the Wealden. A second new Early Cretaceous genus is also described, a titanosauriform from the Ruby Ranch Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation, in Utah. This taxon is known from at least two individuals, an adult and a juvenile, which together provide vertebrae, ribs, a scapula, sternal plates and an ilium. The ilium is particularly unusual, exhibiting five unique features. The longest sauropod necks were five times as long as those of the next longest terrestrial animals, and four separate lineages evolved necks exceeding 10 m. Elongation was enabled by sheer size, vertebral pneumaticity and the relative smallness of sauropod heads, despite aspects of cervical osteology that are difficult to understand on mechanical first principles.

Abstract:Ankylosaurs are a characteristic group of dinosaurs recognized by their extensive coverings of dermal bony armour, known as osteoderms, across their bodies. The Oxford Clay Formation (Callovian–Oxfordian, Middle Jurassic) in the UK is important for understanding early ankylosaur evolution as it contains some of the earliest known ankylosaur material, including a cranial osteoderm from the basal-most ankylosaur Sarcolestes (and probable postcranial osteoderms). Here, we describe an isolated osteoderm from the Oxford Clay of Peterborough that exhibits a different morphology to other osteoderms from this formation. The specimen, although incomplete along its transverse axis, measures 52.7 mm by 41 mm. The osteoderm is subrectangular with a concave ventral surface and a low, rounded keel on its dorsal surface that protrudes beyond the posterior margin of the specimen base. This morphology is superficially more similar to the thoracic osteoderms of more derived Cretaceous ankylosaurs from North America (e.g. Borealopelta ), than to Sarcolestes and other Jurassic ankylosaurs (e.g. Dracopelta , Mymoorapelta , Tianchisaurus ), but could represent a currently unknown Sarcolestes morphology. Although its isolated nature prevents reliable identification of the taxon and the body part to which it belonged, the osteoderm nevertheless indicates a larger morphological diversity in the body armour of the earliest ankylosaurs than currently appreciated.

Abstract:Caenagnathidae is a clade of derived, Late Cretaceous oviraptorosaurian theropods from Asia and North America. Because their remains are rare and often fragmentary, caenagnathid diversity is poorly understood. Anzu wyliei is the only caenagnathid species currently described from the late Maastrichtian Hell Creek Formation of the USA and is also among the largest and most completely preserved North American caenagnathids. Smaller, less complete caenagnathid material has long been known from the Hell Creek Formation, but it is unclear whether these are juvenile representatives of Anzu or if they represent distinct, unnamed taxa. Here, we describe a relatively small caenagnathid hindlimb from the Hell Creek Formation, and conduct osteohistological analysis to assess its maturity. Histological data and morphological differences from Anzu wyliei and other caenagnathids allow us to conclude that this specimen represents a new species of caenagnathid from the Hell Creek Formation, with a smaller adult body size than Anzu . This new taxon is also distinct from other small caenagnathid material previously described from the area, potentially indicating the coexistence of three distinct caenagnathid species in the Hell Creek Formation. These results show that caenagnathid diversity in the Hell Creek ecosystem has been underestimated.

Abstract:Sauropodomorph dinosaurs constitute a well-studied clade of dinosaurs, notably because of the acquisition of gigantism within this group. The genus Plateosaurus is one of the best-known sauropodomorphs, with numerous remains from various localities. Its tumultuous taxonomic history suggests the relevance of addressing its intrageneric shape variability, mixed with taphonomic modifications of the original bone shape. Here we investigate quantitatively the morphological variation of Plateosaurus occurring at the genus level by studying the shape variation of a sample of limb long bones. By means of 3D geometric morphometrics, the analysis of the uncorrelated variation permits separation of the variation estimated as obviously taphonomically influenced from the more biologically plausible variation. Beyond the dominant taphonomic signal, our approach permits interpretation of the most biologically plausible features, even on anatomical parts influenced by taphonomic deformations. Those features are thus found on a quantitative basis from the variation of samples containing fossil specimens, by taking the impact of taphonomy into account, which is paramount in order to avoid making biologically ambiguous interpretations.

Abstract:Tyrannosaurids were large carnivorous dinosaurs that underwent major changes in skull robusticity and body proportions as they grew, suggesting that they occupied different ecological niches during their life span. Although adults commonly fed on dinosaurian megaherbivores, the diet of juvenile tyrannosaurids is largely unknown. Here, we describe a remarkable specimen of a juvenile Gorgosaurus libratus that preserves the articulated hindlimbs of two yearling caenagnathid dinosaurs inside its abdominal cavity. The prey were selectively dismembered and consumed in two separate feeding events. This predator-prey association provides direct evidence of an ontogenetic dietary shift in tyrannosaurids. Juvenile individuals may have hunted small and young dinosaurs until they reached a size when, to satisfy energy requirements, they transitioned to feeding on dinosaurian megaherbivores. Tyrannosaurids occupied both mesopredator and apex predator roles during their life span, a factor that may have been key to their evolutionary success.
New theropod remains from the late Barremian (Early Cretaceous) of Eastern Iberian Peninsula

Abstract:In the last decade, the Iberian Peninsula has become a hot spot in the understanding of the early evolutionary history of large-bodied theropods from the Early Cretaceous, especially for the Spinosauridae and Carcharodontosauridae families. To date, at least five species of spinosaurids and one species of carcharodontosaurid inhabited the Iberian region during the Barremian. However, the discovery of new fossil remains suggests that such a diversity of medium- to large-sized theropods could be even higher. Here, we describe an unpublished large theropod tooth and two caudal vertebrae collected in the late 70s in the upper Barremian strata of the Arcillas de Morella Formation (Morella, eastern Spain). The tooth element displays a series of features that allow its identification as cf. Protathlitis , while the vertebral elements are tentatively attributed to an indeterminate carcharodontosaurid. Interestingly, these last remains are different from those of Concavenator , allowing speculation about the occurrence of another species of carcharodontosaurid allosauroids in the Iberian Peninsula during the Early Cretaceous apart from the famed humpbacked dinosaurs and with some reminiscence to Acrocanthosaurus . Therefore, the new findings clearly illustrate the significance of any new theropod remains in depicting the theropod diversity before the final break-up of Pangea in the Iberian Peninsula.

Abstract:The armoured dinosaurs, Thyreophora, were a diverse clade of ornithischians known from the Early Jurassic to the end of the Cretaceous. During the Middle and Late Jurassic, the thyreophorans radiated to evolve large body size, quadrupedality, and complex chewing mechanisms, and members of the group include some of the most iconic dinosaurs, including the plated Stegosaurus and the club-tailed Ankylosaurus; however, the early stages of thyreophoran evolution are poorly understood due to a paucity of relatively complete remains from early diverging thyreophoran taxa. Scutellosaurus lawleri is generally reconstructed as the earliest-diverging thyreophoran and is known from over 70 specimens from the Lower Jurassic Kayenta Formation of Arizona, USA. Whereas Scutellosaurus lawleri is pivotal to our understanding of character-state changes at the base of Thyreophora that can shed light on the early evolution of the armoured dinosaurs, the taxon has received limited study. Herein, we provide a detailed account of the osteology of Scutellosaurus lawleri, figuring many elements for the first time. Scutellosaurus lawleri was the only definitive bipedal thyreophoran. Histological studies indicate that it grew slowly throughout its life, possessing lamellar-zonal tissue that was a consequence neither of its small size nor phylogenetic position, but may instead be autapomorphic, and supporting other studies that suggest thyreophorans had lower basal metabolic rates than other ornithischian dinosaurs. Faunal diversity of the Kayenta Formation in comparison with other well-known Early Jurassic-aged dinosaur-bearing formations indicates that there was considerable spatial and/or environmental variation in Early Jurassic dinosaur faunas.

Abstract:Skeletal remains of archosauriform reptiles from the Lower and lower Middle Triassic Buntsandstein Group in the Central European Basin are rare. This paper reports on a partial, almost completely disarticulated skeleton of a previously unknown archosauriform reptile from the lower Middle Triassic (Anisian) Röt Formation of Rotfelden in Baden-Württemberg (Germany). Marcianosuchus angustifrons gen. et sp. nov. is distinguished by the following combination of features: posterodorsal process of premaxilla slender, slightly inclined posterodorsally, and with rounded apex; posterodorsal surface of frontal covered by slightly diverging, fine longitudinal grooves; squamosal with distinct lateral ridge extending for entire length of element; teeth with proportionately small, weakly recurved crowns; humerus considerably shorter than femur; distal shaft of ischium rod-like, not plate-like; pubis with flat distal portion forming 'pubic apron': neural spines of posterior cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae with transversely greatly expanded apices that are Y-shaped in anterior or posterior view; dorsal vertebrae with centra taller dorsoventrally than long anteroposteriorly; dorsal osteoderms more or less rectangular in outline, longer anteroposteriorly than wide mediolaterally, with slightly rounded anterior and concave posterior margins and bearing dorsal ridge or eminence; and dorsal surfaces of osteoderms with unsculptured anterior region and posterior region bearing keel or eminence and covered by sculpturing of radially arranged grooves and pits. Marcianosuchus angustifrons represents the first definitive record of a non-archosaurian archosauriform from the Buntsandstein Group of Germany. Its body plan most closely resembles that of Euparkeria capensis among well-known non-archosaurian archosauriform reptiles, but the two taxa are clearly distinct.

Abstract:A new specimen of Haplocanthosaurus is described based on bones excavated from the Late Jurassic Dry Mesa Dinosaur Quarry near Delta, Colorado. The specimen consists of seven dorsal vertebrae and a right tibia and is identified as Haplocanthosaurus based on the dorsally angled transverse processes, tall neural arch peduncles, low parapophyses relative to the diapophyses in the posterior dorsal vertebrae, and the robustness of the tibia combined with a greatly expanded distal articular surface. The discovery adds to our understanding of the biostratigraphy of Haplocanthosaurus, showing this genus is definitively present in the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation, and making this individual the geologically youngest Haplocanthosaurus specimen on the Colorado Plateau. The identification of this genus adds to the known diversity of sauropods at Dry Mesa Dinosaur Quarry (DMDQ), which is at least six distinct genera, making DMDQ the most diverse single locality of sauropods in the Morrison Formation and the world.

Abstract:The terrestrial Judith River Formation of northern Montana was deposited over an approximately 4 Myr interval during the Campanian (Late Cretaceous). Despite having been prospected and collected continuously by palaeontologists for over a century, few relatively complete dinosaur skeletons have been recovered from this unit to date. Here we describe a new genus and species of ankylosaurine dinosaur, Zuul crurivastator , from the Coal Ridge Member of the Judith River Formation, based on an exceptionally complete and well-preserved skeleton (ROM 75860). This is the first ankylosaurin skeleton known with a complete skull and tail club, and it is the most complete ankylosaurid ever found in North America. The presence of abundant soft tissue preservation across the skeleton, including in situ osteoderms, skin impressions and dark films that probably represent preserved keratin, make this exceptional skeleton an important reference for understanding the evolution of dermal and epidermal structures in this clade. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Zuul as an ankylosaurin ankylosaurid within a clade of Dyoplosaurus and Scolosaurus , with Euoplocephalus being more distantly related within Ankylosaurini. The occurrence of Z. crurivastator from the upper Judith River Formation fills a gap in the ankylosaurine stratigraphic and geographical record in North America, and further highlights that Campanian ankylosaurines were undergoing rapid evolution and stratigraphic succession of taxa as observed for Laramidian ceratopsids, hadrosaurids, pachycephalosaurids and tyrannosaurids.

Abstract:A newly referred specimen of Coahomasuchus kahleorum (TMM 31100‐437) from the lower part of the Upper Triassic Dockum Group of Texas preserves much of the skeleton including the majority of the skull. Introduced in the literature in the 1980s as the "carnivorous aetosaur", TMM 31100‐437 bears recurved teeth that previously were considered unique among aetosaurs. The small size of the individual led to speculation that it represents a skeletally immature individual that retains a plesiomorphic dentition for Archosauromorpha. We provide a detailed evaluation of the anatomy and phylogenetic relationships of this specimen. Apomorphies of the osteoderms and braincase support the referral of the specimen to C. kahleorum. Histological analysis of the femur demonstrates that TMM 31100‐437 does not represent a juvenile form of another known aetosaur. Thus, TMM 31000‐437 provides another case demonstrating that aetosaur species spanned a wide range of maximum body sizes, from approximately 1.5 m to over 5 m in length. Reanalysis of the type specimen of C. kahleorum, along with information from TMM 31000‐437, demonstrates that the lateral osteoderms are not autapomorphic as previously described and have distinct lateral and medial flanges as well as a dorsal eminence. Abstract:Early archosaurs included a range of ecological types—from predators to herbivores and from terrestrial to semi-aquatic forms. Members of the family Ornithosuchidae, traditionally considered active predators, occupy a special position. Their characteristic jaw apparatus structure and the morphology of their postcranial skeleton suggest the development of a unique ecological type among archosaurs, namely, a medium-sized hyperanisodont macrophagous predator. At the same time, some analogs can be noted between ornithosuchids, saber-toothed therapsids, and mammals.
