Abstract:Bipedal ornithischian dinosaurs from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation are rare, forming only about 15% of the dinosaur specimens. Nevertheless, one of them was among the first dinosaurs named from what was then the ‘’Atlantosaurus Beds’’ of Colorado. Collecting and restudy for 140 years has increased the diversity from the initial 1877 discovery to the currently valid four genera and six species, viz., Fruitadens haagaroum, Nanosaurus agilis, Camptosaurus dispar, C. aphanoecetes, Dryosaurus altus, and D. elderae, which we briefly review. We demonstrate that the enigmatic Nanosaurus agilis is the senior name for Drinker nisti, Othnielosaurus consors, and Othnielia rex. In addition, a new species, Dryosaurus elderae is proposed for the Dryosaurus specimens from Dinosaur National Monument that are characterized by elongate cervical verebrae and a long, low ilium among other features.

Abstract:Pachystropheus rhaeticus is a primarily marine diapsid reptile found in Upper Triassic (Rhaetian) deposits in Britain and continental Europe. Although known for a long time, Pachystropheus remains an enigma. It was identified as the oldest choristodere based on similarities between postcranial bones and a sole cranial element. Here, we re-study all available Pachystropheus material, including new specimens, identifying all skeletal elements that are plausibly referrable to the genus. We reject some previous dubious identifications and show that reports of an ectopterygoid, the only cranial element of Pachystropheus described, were incorrect and that supposed skull elements belong to coelacanth fishes. Furthermore, we present CT data for the first time and new palynological data from Pachystropheus -bearing strata, providing a clearer picture of its stratigraphic distribution and the paleoecology of the Penarth Group. The reassessment of its phylogeny using new character informative data, places Pachystropheus as the last of the thalattosaurs, a lineage of marine reptiles abundant throughout the Triassic. We demonstrate that a specimen of Pachystropheus previously reported from the Lower Jurassic is more likely from the Late Rhaetian, and therefore the taxon does not extend across the end-Triassic Extinction. Moreover, this extends the known geological range of thalattosaurs from the Norian–Rhaetian boundary to the latest Rhaetian. Similarities in the postcranial skeleton between Pachystropheus and other askeptosauroid thalattosaurs, particularly Endennasaurus acutirostris , suggest it was able to move on land, but was most likely a primarily marine predator with an ecological niche distinct from coeval marine reptiles (placodonts, ichthyosaurs) and carnivorous fishes (hybodont sharks, actinopterygians).

Abstract:Ankylosaurines are the iconic armoured dinosaurs that characterize terrestrial vertebrate faunas in the Late Cretaceous of Asia and Laramidia (western North America). The earliest members of this clade are known from the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Santonian) times of Asia, but little consensus has emerged as to how they are related to the anatomically derived and chronologically younger forms. In southeastern China, the Cretaceous red sand beds crop out across basins from Zhejiang to Guandong provinces. However, the horizons corresponding to the early Late Cretaceous stages remain poorly sampled. Here, we report the first definitive vertebrate skeleton 3⁄4 let alone that of an armoured dinosaur 3⁄4 from the Coniacian/Turonian Ganzhou Formation, Datai yinliangis gen. et sp. nov. Despite the immature ontogenetic status of the type materials, D. yingliangis can be diagnosed with autapomorphic traits in the cranial caputegulae (such as double horns on the quadratojugal) and extensive gular osteoderms. Morphologically, it is intermediate between the chronologically older ankylosaurids from Asia (e.g., Crichtonpelta and Jinyunpelta) and derived post-Cenomanian ankylosaurines (e.g., Pinacosaurus). Phylogenetic analyses broadly corroborate this assessment. The new taxon either falls in the grade of Asian ankylosaurines proximal to the lineages of derived forms or forms a sister lineage to Pinacosaurus. Based on these insights, Datai makes a significant addition to the early Late Cretaceous vertebrate fauna from southeastern China and highlights the future potential in this region for improved understanding of the origin and early evolution of ankylosaurines.

Abstract:The nearly complete, disarticulated skull of AMNH FARB 6810, a specimen of the basal sauropodomorph Plateosaurus collected in 1925 from the Norian (Late Triassic) strata of the Knollenmergel beds of Trossingen (Germany), is redescribed. This study supports referral of AMNH FARB 6810 to P. erlenbergiensis on the basis of the following characters: occipital condyle above level of parasphenoid; basisphenoid with transverse, subvertical lamina extending between basipterygoid processes, with ventrally projecting median process; and peglike process projecting medially from the middle of the palatine. Furthermore, P. longiceps is regarded a junior synonym of P. erlenbergiensis because the type specimen of the latter is diagnostic (displaying the above-noted apomorphies of the braincase and palatine) and, chronologically, P. erlenbergiensis has priority over P. longiceps.

Abstract:Massospondylus carinatus is a basal sauropodomorph dinosaur from the early Jurassic Elliot Formation of South Africa. It is one of the best-represented fossil dinosaur taxa, known from hundreds of specimens including at least 13 complete or nearly complete skulls. Surprisingly, the internal cranial anatomy of M. carinatus has never been described using computed tomography (CT) methods. Using CT scans and 3D digital representations, we digitally reconstruct the bones of the facial skeleton, braincase, and palate of a complete, undistorted cranium of M. carinatus (BP/1/5241). We describe the anatomical features of the cranial bones, and compare them to other closely related sauropodomorph taxa such as Plateosaurus erlenbergiensis, Lufengosaurus huenei, Sarahsaurus aurifontanalis and Efraasia minor. We identify a suite of character states of the skull and braincase for M. carinatus that sets it apart from other taxa, but these remain tentative due to the lack of comparative sauropodomorph braincase descriptions in the literature. Furthermore, we hypothesize 27 new cranial characters useful for determining relationships in non-sauropodan Sauropodomorpha, delete five pre-existing characters and revise the scores of several existing cranial characters to make more explicit homology statements. All the characters that we hypothesized or revised are illustrated. Using parsimony as an optimality criterion, we then test the relationships of M. carinatus (using BP/1/5241 as a specimen-level exemplar) in our revised phylogenetic data matrix.

Abstract:Although the sauropod dinosaurs have been recognised for more than a hundred and sixty years, much remains to be discovered and understood about their functional anatomy and palaeobiology. Older taxa require revision and new taxa await description. The characteristic long necks of sauropods are mechanically perplexing and their evolution is obscure. All these issues are addressed herein. The genus Brachiosaurus is represented by the American type species B. altithorax and the better known African species B. brancai. However, examination of the overlapping material shows 26 differences between the species. B. brancai must be removed from Brachiosaurus and referred to the genus Giraffatitan, which has been previously proposed for it. Xenoposeidon proneneukos is a new neosauropod from the Lower Cretaceous Hastings Bed Group, known from a single partial dorsal vertebra. The excellent preservation of the Xenoposeidon holotype reveals six unique characters. The distinctive morphology suggests that Xenoposeidon may represent a new sauropod family, extending sauropod disparity as well as bringing to four the number of sauropod families known from the Wealden. A second new Early Cretaceous genus is also described, a titanosauriform from the Ruby Ranch Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation, in Utah. This taxon is known from at least two individuals, an adult and a juvenile, which together provide vertebrae, ribs, a scapula, sternal plates and an ilium. The ilium is particularly unusual, exhibiting five unique features. The longest sauropod necks were five times as long as those of the next longest terrestrial animals, and four separate lineages evolved necks exceeding 10 m. Elongation was enabled by sheer size, vertebral pneumaticity and the relative smallness of sauropod heads, despite aspects of cervical osteology that are difficult to understand on mechanical first principles.
Redescription of three basal anomodonts: a phylogenetic reassessment of the holotype of Eodicynodon oelofseni (NMQR 2913)

Abstract:The Dicynodontia (Therapsida: Anomodontia) is one of the most successful Permo-Triassic terrestrial tetrapod clades and the oldest specimens are recorded from the middle Permian Eodicynodon Assemblage Zone of South Africa. Their fossil record is abundant and species-rich across Pangea. By contrast, the fossil record of the basal-most anomodonts, which includes non-dicynodont anomodonts and early forms of dicynodonts, is patchy and their morphology and phylogeny are deduced from relatively few specimens. Discovered in 1982 and described in 1990, the holotype of Eodicynodon oelofseni (NMQR 2913) is one of the better-preserved early anomodont specimens. However, it has been suggested that E. oelofseni does not belong to the genus Eodicynodon . Here, using CT-scanning and 3D modeling, the skull of Eodicynodon oelofseni , Patranomodon nyaphulii and Eodicynodon oosthuizeni are redescribed. In the framework of this study, the application of 3D scanning technology to describe anatomical structures which were previously inaccessible in these fossils has enabled detailed redescription of the cranial morphology of the basal anomodonts Patranomodon , Eodicynodon oelofseni and E. oosthuizeni and led to a greater understanding of their cranial morphology and phylogenetic relationships. Based on an anatomical comparison and phylogenetic analyses (Bayesian and cladistics) the phylogenetic relationships of basal anomodonts are reassessed and it is suggested that NMQR 2913 does not belong to the genus Eodicynodon but likely represents a separate genus basal to other dicynodonts. A new genus is erected for NMQR 2913. This presents one of the first applications of Bayesian Inference of phylogeny on Therapsida.

Anatomy and systematics of the sauropodomorph Sarahsaurus aurifontanalis from the Early Jurassic Kayenta Formation

Abstract:Sarahsaurus aurifontanalis, from the Kayenta Formation of Arizona, is one of only three sauropodomorph dinosaurs known from the Early Jurassic of North America. It joins Anchisaurus polyzelus, from the older Portland Formation of the Hartford Basin, and Seitaad reussi, from the younger Navajo Sandstone of Utah, in representing the oldest North American sauropodomorphs. If it is true that sauropodomorphs were absent from North America during the Late Triassic, the relationship among these three dinosaurs offers a test of the mechanisms that drove recovery in North American biodiversity following the end-Triassic extinction event. Here we provide the first thorough description of Sarahsaurus aurifontanalis based on completed preparation and computed tomographic imaging of the holotype and referred specimens. With new anatomical data, our phylogenetic analysis supports the conclusion that Sarahsaurus aurifontanalis is nested within the primarily Gondwanan clade Massospondylidae, while agreeing with previous analyses that the three North American sauropodomorphs do not themselves form an exclusive clade. A revised diagnosis and more thorough understanding of the anatomy of Sarahsaurus aurifontanalis support the view that independent dispersal events were at least partly responsible for the recovery in North American vertebrate diversity following a major extinction event.

Abstract:Eosauropterygians rapidly diversified in the Anisian (Middle Triassic), a period by which the invertebrates had already completely recovered from the end-Permian mass extinction. The Pelsonian (Anisian) deposits of the small Panxian and Luoping intraplatform basins in southwestern China alone yielded seven or more eosauropterygian taxa. A new Middle Triassic sauropterygian, Panzhousaurus rotundirostris, gen. et sp. nov., is here described based on an almost complete skeleton from the middle Anisian (Middle Triassic) of Panzhou (Guizhou Province, southwestern China). The upper temporal fenestra smaller than the orbit, the broad and flat parietal table, the cervical ribs with two proximal articular heads, the pachyostotic proximal ends of the dorsal ribs, and the unexpanded sacral ribs indicate that the specimen is a pachypleurosaur-like eosauropterygian. The new species also shows some differences from all other eosauropterygians, such as a rounded and shortened snout, 24 cervical and 20 dorsal vertebrae, a straight ulna with a concave posterior margin, and four distal carpals. Phylogenetic analysis also reveals that Panzhousaurus is an eosauropterygian, closely related to pachypleurosaur-like forms. The discovery of Panzhousaurus enriches our knowledge of the diversity of the Panxian fauna and provides new information to test phylogenetic relationships among known eosauropterygians.

Abstract:The Middle Jurassic lower Shaximiao Formation in Sichuan Province of south-western China has yielded a diverse terrestrial vertebrate fauna dominated by sauropod dinosaurs. However, many of these sauropods lack detailed descriptions or explicit phylogenetic diagnoses. Here, we present a comprehensive redescription of Dashanpusaurus dongi , a species of sauropod found only in the lower Shaximiao Formation. We define the revised autapomorphies of the species as follows: neural canals are sub-square in anterior dorsal vertebrae; the presence of a thin accessory lamina that contacts the prezygodiapophyseal and paradiapophyseal laminae of the middle dorsals, forming an angle of 75° to the horizontal; and four ridges on the anterodistal edge of the humerus. Often considered part of the epipophyseal-prezygapophyseal lamina, a strut invades the spinodiapophyseal fossa in the cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae. Anatomical comparisons indicate that this feature was widespread among early-diverging Middle Jurassic eusauropod lineages. This comparative anatomical data provides an opportunity to revisit the phylogenetic position of Dashanpusaurus and the relationships of the neosauropod clade. Recovered as a macronarian, a better understanding of Dashanpusaurus dongi will allow for clarification of the origin, early evolution, and palaeogeographical distribution of neosauropods. This study also suggests that the diversity and dispersity of the neosauropod clade occurred much earlier than previously realized.

Abstract:The purpose of this application, under Article 75.5 of the Code, is to conserve the usage of the name Plateosaurus Meyer, 1837 (Upper Triassic, Germany), known from numerous articulated skeletons, several with complete skulls, from the Norian Plateosaurus bonebeds of Western Europe and Greenland. This was the first non-English, non-avian dinosaur and the second sauropodomorph and Triassic dinosaur to be named. It is proposed to replace the fragmentary and non-diagnostic bones that constitute the type material of Plateosaurus engelhardti Meyer, 1837, the type species of Plateosaurus Meyer, 1837, with a diagnostic neotype, an almost complete skull and skeleton (SMNS 13200). This specimen has formed the basis for the concept of P. engelhardti (the best represented basal sauropodomorph) and ultimately of Plateosaurus Meyer, 1837. Plateosaurus is the basis for plateosauridae Marsh, 1895 and Plateosauria Tornier, 1913.
Nothosaurus yangjuanensis n.sp. (Reptilia, Sauropterygia, Nothosauridae) from the middle Anisian (Middle Triassic) of Guizhou, southwestern China

Abstract:A new nothosaurid species, Nothosaurus yangiuanensis n. sp., is described on the basis of a complete skull from the Upper Member of the Guanling Formation (Pelsonian, Middle Anisian) of Xinmin, Panxian County, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. Its diagnostic characters include: jugal extending posteriorly to contact the squamosal; parietal foramen broadly rounded and followed by a shallow groove; four premaxillary fangs followed by one small conical premaxillary tooth and five small maxillary conical teeth followed by paired maxillary fangs. It is the second oldest species of Nothosaurus with a suite of relatively plesiomorphic characters such as a relatively short, broad and rounded rostrum and broad kidney-shaped external nares. This morphology is in accordance with its early stratigraphic occurrence. A phylogenetic analysis shows that the interrelationship of the species of Nothosaurus remain largely unresolved, although it supports the status of the new taxon as a separate species.
Origin and evolution of turiasaur dinosaurs set by means of a new ‘rosetta’ specimen from Spain

Abstract:Abstract Turiasauria is a non-neosauropod eusauropod clade of dinosaurs known since 2006, when the description of Turiasaurus was published. This group, including Losillasaurus, was originally thought to have been restricted to the Late Jurassic of Spain. However, over the last decade, our knowledge of this group has improved with the discovery of new taxa such as Zby from the Portuguese Late Jurassic, Tendaguria from the Tanzanian Late Jurassic and Mierasaurus and Moabosaurus from the Early Cretaceous of the USA. Here, we describe a new specimen of Losillasaurus from Spain, which allows us to better understand the character variation in the cranial and postcranial skeleton. The review of some sauropod fauna of Madagascar, and inclusion of some specimens of Turiasauria, suggest that this clade might have arisen in the Middle Jurassic. According to our phylogenetic results, a specimen found in the early 19th century in Madagascar is shown to be the oldest and only member of Turiasauria represented in the Middle Jurassic thus far. This is named Narindasaurus thevenini gen. & sp. nov.. Turiasauria is thus known from the Middle Jurassic in Pangaea, diversified in the Late Jurassic in Gondwana and Laurasia, and dispersed during the Early Cretaceous to North America.

Abstract:Tarjadia ruthae is a quadrupedal terrestrial pseudosuchian from the Middle‐early Upper Triassic of the Chañares Formation, La Rioja Province, Argentina. Originally, this species was identified as an indeterminate archosaur and later as a doswelliid archosauriform based on very fragmentary specimens characterized by the ornamentation of the skull roof and osteoderms. Additional specimens (including skulls and postcrania) recovered in the last decade show that Tarjadia is an erpetosuchid, an enigmatic pseudosuchian group composed ofby six species registered in Middle‐Upper Triassic continental units of Tanzania, Germany, Scotland, North America, Brazil, and Argentina. Tarjadia ruthae from Argentina and Parringtonia gracilis from Tanzania are the best preserved and more abundant species. Although the monophyly of Erpetosuchidae is well supported, alternative high‐level positions within Archosauria have been suggested, such as sister taxon to Crocodylomorpha, Aetosauria, or Ornithosuchidae. In order to improve the knowledge about the erpetosuchids, we performed a detailed description and paleoneurological reconstruction of the skull of Tarjadia ruthae, based on two articulated partial skulls (CRILAR‐Pv 478 and CRILAR‐Pv 495) and other fragmentary specimens. We analyzed the stratigraphic and geographic occurrence of historical and new specimens of Tarjadia and provided a new emended diagnosis (the same for the genus as for the species, due to monotypy) along with a comparative description of the cranial endocast. The skull of Tarjadia is robust, with a thick and strongly ornamented skull roof, triangular in dorsal view, with concave lateral margins at mid‐length that form an abrupt widened posterior region. The external nares are the smallest openings of the skull. The antorbital fossa is deeply excavated and has a small heart‐shaped fenestra with both lobes pointing anteriorly. The supratemporal fenestrae are as large and rounded as the orbits, and the infratemporal fenestrae are L‐shaped with an extensive excavation along the jugal, quadratojugal and quadrate. The hemimandibles are low, slightly concave on the dentigerous region and strongly convex on the posterior region, conferring them a S‐shaped profile in dorsal view. The external mandibular fenestra is small and elliptic, being twice longer than high. The maxillary dentition is restricted to the anterior to mid region of the rostrum. Since the braincase of both specimens is partially damaged, the dorsal surface of the brain could not be entirely reconstructed. As a result, the endocast is anteroposteriorly elongated and seemingly flat, and the cephalic flexure seems to be lower than expected for a suchian. The labyrinth is twice wider than high, the semicircular canals are remarkably straight, and the anterior canal is longer than the posterior one.

Abstract:Sauropods are the largest terrestrial vertebrates ever known. During their evolution, they underwent numerous morphological changes, some of which occurred at the end of the Early Jurassic. However, current knowledge of Early Jurassic dinosaurs is scarce, especially cranial information. Here we describe the skull of the basal eusauropod Bagualia alba from the Cañadón Asfalto Formation (Toarcian; Early Jurassic) of Patagonia, Argentina, which represents the most complete eusauropod skull from the late Early Jurassic worldwide. The osteological description and phylogenetic relationships of Bagualia allowed us to determine the acquisition of the common cranial bauplan of eusauropods at the end of the Early Jurassic: a tall and robust rostrum with great retraction of the external nares; a deep narial fossa; a reduced antorbital fenestra; verticalization of the lacrimal; prefrontal without an anterior process; anteroposterior shortening of the frontal; a supratemporal fenestra visible laterally; a robust braincase; 'U'-shaped jaws in dorsal view; reduction in the number of teeth in the dentary; teeth with crown to crown occlusion; development of lateral plates in the premaxilla and maxilla; and a dorsoventral expansion of the dentary symphysis. These cranial characteristics were recently suggested to be related to a change in the diet of the sauropods toward mainly hard vegetation. In this context, Bagualia contributes to filling a gap in cranial evolution between the gracile skulls of Sauropodiformes and the highly robust skulls widely represented in Middle Jurassic taxa.

Abstract:Qijianglong guokr, gen. et sp. nov., represents a mamenchisaurid eusauropod from the Late Jurassic of southern China. The holotype consists of an incomplete skull, partly articulated axial skeleton, and fragmentary appendicular skeleton. A well-preserved braincase and skull roof provide rare insights into the poorly known neurocranial anatomy of mamenchisaurids and reveal a unique combination of characters such as an accessory tuber at the base of planar basipterygoid process and parietal excluding frontal from the anterior margin of the supratemporal fenestra. The cervical vertebrae have a distinct finger-like process extending from the postzygapophyseal process beside a zygapophyseal contact. Qijianglong is the first mamenchisaurid from the Late Jurassic of China that is definitively distinct from Mamenchisaurus, indicating greater morphological and taxonomic diversity of the poorly represented Late Jurassic mamenchisaurids. The occurrence of Qijianglong is consistent with a scenario in which mamenchisaurids formed an endemic sauropod fauna in the Late Jurassic of Asia. Phylogenetically, Qijianglong represents a relatively plesiomorphic mamenchisaurid lineage. The mamenchisaurids form an ancient clade of basal eusauropod dinosaurs that likely appeared in the Early Jurassic. A cladistic analysis highlights the interrelationships of mamenchisaurids and suggests guidelines for mamenchisaurid taxonomic revision. Abstract:A new genus and species of Pachypleurosauria, Dianopachysaurus dingi, gen. et sp. nov., from a recently discovered Middle Triassic Lagerstatte in the Anisian Guanling Formation of Yunnan Province is described. The monophyly of Pachypleurosauria, including all potential Chinese pachypleurosaurs in this study, is supported by the rigorous cladistic analysis conducted here. Phylogenetic relationships of Chinese pachypleurosaurs are clarified. Wumengosaurus occupies the most basal position within Pachypleurosauria. Keichousaurus and Dianopachysaurus form the monophyletic Keichousauridae that is the sister group of all European pachypleurosaurs. Our cladistic analysis also supports a previously proposed paleobiogeographic hypothesis of an eastern Tethyan origin of pachypleurosaurs and their migration into the western Tethyan faunal province. The existence of a long ghost lineage as required by the paleobiogeographic hypothesis is greatly shortened by the discovery of Dianopachysaurus.
