Abstract:When the stress field in a reinforced concrete element remains homogeneous until cracking occurs, as for example in a tie-rod or a cylindrical vessel under pressure, cracking prediction related to the location of the cracks, remains an open problem. The numerical difficulties involved in arriving at an objective prediction remain problematic. In this paper, we propose a simplified approach to this problem, with the aim of predicting cracking indicators (spacing, opening) on average. The approach is based on a dialogue between a classical calculation leading to a situation of diffuse damage and that of localised cracking described on the basis of the concepts of limit analysis. Applied to the simple case of elements in tension or bending, the procedure works. But above all, it is shown that on the basis of adapted models, certain specific situations such as the gusset between the raft and containment of a nuclear power plant, which is subject to strong expansion-shrinkage effects as the concrete matures, the proposed procedure leads to relevant results.
