Abstract:Physical sensors have been widely used in the biomedical field. The commonly used sensors include resistance sensors, inductive sensors, capacitive sensors, piezoelectric sensors, electromagnetic sensors, photoelectric sensors, and thermoelectric sensors. Abstract:The purpose of this work is the authors’ attempt to identify the main phases of information transformation in measurement channels on the example of an optical measurement channel with microprocessor control. The authors include such phases: hardware implementation and analytical representation of an optical sensor’s converting functions and a current-to-voltage converter; based on the methods of experimental computer science, the converting functions and sensitivity are deduced, analytical dependences for estimation of a range of measurement are obtained. It is shown that the choice of information transmission type in the microprocessor measuring channel significantly affects the speed of the measuring channel. Based on the uncertainty in the form of entropy before and after measurements, the amount of information for measuring channels with optoelectronic sensors is estimated. The application of the results obtained in the work allows even at the design stage of physical and mathematical modeling to assess the basic static metrological characteristics of measuring channels, aimed at reducing the stage of development and debugging of hardware and software and standardization of their metrological characteristics.

Abstract:Recent advances in fiber optics (FOs) and the numerous advantages of light over electronic systems have boosted the utility and demand for optical sensors in various military, industry and social fields. Environmental and atmospheric monitoring, earth and space sciences, industrial chemical processing and biotechnology, law enforcement, digital imaging, scanning, and printing are exemplars of them. The ubiquity of photonic technologies could drive down prices which reduced the cost of optical fibers and lasers. Fiber optic sensors (FOSs) offer a wide spectrum of advantages over traditional sensing systems, such as small size and longer lifetime. Immunity to electromagnetic interference, amenability to multiplexing, and high sensitivity make FOs the sensor technology of choice in several fields, including the healthcare and aerospace sectors. FOSs show reliable and rigid sensing tasks over conventional electrical and electronic sensors. This paper presents an executive review of optical fiber sensors and the most beneficial applications.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity temperature sensor based on an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The shift of the oscillation frequency in the OEO is inversely proportional to the variation of temperature. An injection-locking method is employed to set up the initial oscillation frequency of the sensor to overcome the uncertainty of the initial oscillation frequency. The experiment results show that high sensitivity of 43.91 kHz/°C with an accuracy of ±0.12°C is achieved between 20°C and 240°C. The system features high temperature sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and high reliability.

Abstract:ABSTRACTAn optoelectronic oscillator (OEO)‐based strain sensor with extended measurement range is proposed and demonstrated. The OEO is embedded with an electrical phase shifter (EPS) to cancel out the strain‐induced phase shift real‐timely via a phase‐locked loop scheme. Theoretically, the control voltage of the EPS is linear to the strain applied on the sensing fiber, leading to a simple and straightforward frequency demodulation. Thanks to the real‐time close‐loop interrogation, the mode‐hopping‐free frequency shift range can exceed one free spectrum range, thus, the measurement range of the sensor is extended. The obtained strain measurement range is up to 2762 με. The achieved strain resolution is 0.86 με. The root‐mean‐square deviation of more than 2‐h test for a fixed strain is 1.1 με. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:2336–2339, 2015

Abstract:The term optomechanical sensors describes devices based on coupling the optical and mechanical sensing principles. The presence of a target analyte leads to a mechanical change, which, in turn, determines an alteration in the light propagation. Having higher sensitivity in comparison with the individual technologies upon which they are based, the optomechanical devices are used in biosensing, humidity, temperature, and gases detection. This perspective focuses on a particular class, namely on devices based on diffractive optical structures (DOS). Many configurations have been developed, including cantilever- and MEMS-type devices, fiber Bragg grating sensors, and cavity optomechanical sensing devices. These state-of-the-art sensors operate on the principle of a mechanical transducer coupled with a diffractive element resulting in a variation in the intensity or wavelength of the diffracted light in the presence of the target analyte. Therefore, as DOS can further enhance the sensitivity and selectivity, we present the individual mechanical and optical transducing methods and demonstrate how the DOS introduction can lead to an enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. Their (low-) cost manufacturing and their integration in new sensing platforms with great adaptability across many sensing areas are discussed, being foreseen that their implementation on wider application areas will further increase.

Abstract:This paper delves into the refractometric methodology for monitoring liquid media within the infrared spectrum, presenting a pioneering design of an optoelectronic system anchored on an attenuated total reflectance element. The proposed system exhibits heightened sensitivity, tailored for precise analysis of optical parameters of liquid media products. Utilizing key components such as light-emitting diodes, a cuvette, the attenuated total reflectance element, and an optical detector, this system epitomizes versatility and efficacy across diverse applications.Through the integration of attenuated total reflectance elements, researchers and engineers can develop highly sensitive instruments, facilitating non-destructive testing, chemical analysis, and environmental monitoring. The inherent flexibility in such systems enables customization to meet specific measurement requirements, ranging from industrial process monitoring to medical diagnostics, by adjusting parameters like angle of incidence, light wavelength, and optical material selection. This paper contributes to advancing optoelectronic control measurement systems, offering enhanced capabilities for accurate and reliable assessment of liquid media properties in various fields.

Abstract:Fiber‐optic sensors based on Bragg gratings, long‐period gratings, interferometry, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), fluorescence, and light diffusion are analyzed. The foundations of chemical and biosensing are addressed and the recent progress in numerous sensing fields, including environmental, industrial, and biomedical applications, are discussed. The review highlights the strategies and techniques used to overcome the sensing challenges. Fiber‐optic technology emerged originally for applications in data transmission and telecommunications. However, sensors based on fiber‐optics have been developed rapidly because of their excellent sensing performances and capability to function in remote and harsh environments. The usage of fiber‐optic sensors has flourished in many fields over the past 30 years due to the fiber‐optic's inherent advantages: cost‐effectiveness, miniaturized size, light weight, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. This work reviews the fiber‐optic sensors based on Bragg gratings, long period gratings, interferometers, surface plasmon resonance, fluorescence, and light diffusion. Brief theory of sensing principle, fabrication method, applications, advantages and disadvantages of the different fiber‐optic sensors, are addressed. Recent progress in numerous sensing fields, including environmental, industrial, and biomedical are discussed for each class of fiber‐optic sensors. The review highlights the methods and techniques used to overcome the sensing challenges. Finally, prospect of future developments of fiber‐optic sensors is summarized.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors present several advantages in relation to other types of sensors. These advantages are essentially related to the optical fiber properties, i.e., small, lightweight, resistant to high temperatures and pressure, electromagnetically passive, among others. Sensing is achieved by exploring the properties of light to obtain measurements of parameters, such as temperature, strain, or angular velocity. In addition, optical fiber sensors can be used to form an Optical Fiber Sensing Network (OFSN) allowing manufacturers to create versatile monitoring solutions with several applications, e.g., periodic monitoring along extensive distances (kilometers), in extreme or hazardous environments, inside structures and engines, in clothes, and for health monitoring and assistance. Most of the literature available on this subject focuses on a specific field of optical sensing applications and details their principles of operation. This paper presents a more broad overview, providing the reader with a literature review that describes the main principles of optical sensing and highlights the versatility, advantages, and different real-world applications of optical sensing. Moreover, it includes an overview and discussion of a less common architecture, where optical sensing and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are integrated to harness the benefits of both worlds.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor is a device capable of providing analytical information about a sample, transforming the information associated with an electrochemical reaction into a signal that can be quantified. An electrochemical sensor is generally made up of three electrodes: a reference electrode that keeps the potential stable; a counter electrode that establishes a connection with the electrolyte solution; and a working electrode that functions as a transduction element in the reaction. Regarding the working electrode, it is important to underline that surface modification can be carried out by immobilizing functional groups or biological recognition elements, such as antibodies or enzymes, so that the species of interest can be electrochemically detected. In recent decades, sensors have benefited from advances in microelectronics and microengineering, with the manufacture of smaller sensors, greater sensitivity and selectivity, larger dynamic range and lower production costs, and electrochemical sensors are not an exception. Thus, electrochemical sensors are being increasingly used in a large number of applications due to their ability to be easily integrated into automatic measurement systems that work in the laboratory or outdoors, which is the case when they are used for environmental parameters assessment.

Abstract:Optical fibre sensors are an essential subset of optical fibre technology, designed specifically for sensing and measuring several physical parameters. These sensors offer unique advantages over traditional sensors, making them gradually more valuable in a wide range of applications. They can detect extremely small variations in the physical parameters they are designed to measure, such as analytes in the case of biosensing. This high sensitivity allows them to detect subtle variations in temperature, pressure, strain, the refractive index of analytes, vibration, and other environmental factors with exceptional accuracy. Moreover, these sensors enable remote sensing capabilities. Since light signals are used to carry information, the sensing elements can be placed at distant or inaccessible sites and still communicate the data back to the central monitoring system without signal degradation. In recent times, different attractive configurations and approaches have been proposed to enhance the sensitivity of the optical fibre-based sensor and are briefly explained in this review. However, we believe that the choice of optical fibre sensor configuration should be designated based on the specific application. As these sensors continue to evolve and improve, they will play an increasingly vital role in critical monitoring and control applications across various industries.

Abstract:For the safe operation of equipment and personal safety protection in high-voltage environments, the precise measurement of the high-frequency electric field is of paramount importance. Optical electric field sensor (OES) is a current research trend for high-frequency electric field measurement but is generally limited by low sensitivity and the need for high-speed acquisition modules. Here, we propose a high-frequency electric field intensity measurement approach based on frequency shift with a high gain and a wide frequency range. We used two different frequency shift methods, i.e., stimulated Brillouin scattering and down-conversion. Based on the former method, an amplification module is designed to enhance the OES signal with a frequency range from 11 GHz to 20 GHz and a noise-suppressed gain of up to 63 dB, and based on the latter one, the high-frequency OES signal is down-converted to a sub-MHz intermediate frequency signal. The frequency shift approach shows the potential to detect and analyze high-frequency electric fields with low cost and a small footprint, which is valuable for their applications in electronic warfare, high-voltage engineering, space exploration, etc.

Abstract:Nowadays, the electronic nose (e-nose) has gained a huge amount of attention due to its ability to detect and differentiate mixtures of various gases and odors using a limited number of sensors. Its applications in the environmental fields include analysis of the parameters for environmental control, process control, and confirming the efficiency of the odor-control systems. The e-nose has been developed by mimicking the olfactory system of mammals. This paper investigates e-noses and their sensors for the detection of environmental contaminants. Among different types of gas chemical sensors, metal oxide semiconductor sensors (MOXs) can be used for the detection of volatile compounds in air at ppm and sub-ppm levels. In this regard, the advantages and disadvantages of MOX sensors and the solutions to solve the problems arising upon these sensors' applications are addressed, and the research works in the field of environmental contamination monitoring are overviewed. These studies have revealed the suitability of e-noses for most of the reported applications, especially when the tools were specifically developed for that application, e.g., in the facilities of water and wastewater management systems. As a general rule, the literature review discusses the aspects related to various applications as well as the development of effective solutions. However, the main limitation in the expansion of the use of e-noses as an environmental monitoring tool is their complexity and lack of specific standards, which can be corrected through appropriate data processing methods applications.

Abstract:The optical fiber sensor system and its applications are described in this paper. This sensor system includes two parts: data acquisition part and data transportation part. The data acquisition part is used for measuring the parameters of oil tanks: level, temperature, pressure, flowrate, etc. The specifications of the system are given in this paper. The advantages of the sensor heads are with high stability, because the output signals from it are digital and can be propagated for long distance and long term use with high stability. The sensor system worked continually in laboratory for one year and three systems are installed in the field for field test more than two years in South China and North China now. The constructs and experiment results of the system in the field are described in detail.

Abstract:Discusses the development of fibre optic sensors for industrial, consumer, medical and military applications. The technology will continue to be applied to inspection, imaging and switching. For continuous measurements of the key physical quantities (temperature, pressure, flow, level and displacement) multimode technology and 'point source' sensors seem most appropriate at this stage using either intensity, wavelength or rate modulation. Devices for sensing magnetic, electric, nuclear radiation and chemical quantities are also of interest. Significant development of monomode hydrophones and gyroscopes has already taken place, and now multimode technology is being applied to multiplexing multi-sensor systems, optopneumatic and optohydraulic converters and 'control-by-light' schemes. Illustrative examples of practical developments are given and key reference sources cited.

Abstract:The electrochemical technique is commonly used to analyze and screen various environmental pathogens. When used in conjunction with other optical recognition methods, it can extend the sensing range, lower the detection limit, and offer mutual validation. Nowadays, electrochemical-optical dual-mode biosensors have ensured the accuracy of test results by incorporating two signals into one, indicating their potential use in primary food safety quantitative assays and screening tests. Particularly, visible optical signals from electrochemical/colorimetric dual-mode biosensors could meet the demand for real-time screening of microbial pathogens. While electrochemical-optical dual-mode probes have been receiving increasing attention, there is limited emphasis on the design approaches for sensors intended for microbial pathogens. Here, we review the recent progress in the merging of optical and electrochemical techniques, including fluorescence, colorimetry, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). This study particularly emphasizes the reporting of various sensing performances, including sensing principles, types, cutting-edge design approaches, and applications. Finally, some concerns and upcoming advancements in dual-mode probes are briefly outlined.

Abstract:Several fiber optic based chemical sensors have been developed for use in plant growth systems and enclosed life support systems. Optical chemical sensors offer several distinct advantages in terms of sensitivity, calibration stability, immunity to biofouling and electrical interference, and ease of multiplexing sensors for multipoint/multiparameter analysis. Also, the ability to locate fiber optic sensors in close proximity to plant roots or leaves should improve the measurement reliability by obviating the need for handling and transport which can compromise sample integrity. Polestar Technologies and GEO-CENTERS have developed and tested many types of optical chemical sensors which utilize novel glass and polymeric materials as the sensor substrate. Analytes are detected using immobilized colorimetric indication systems or molecular recognition elements. Typically transduction is via wavelength specific absorption changes with multiwavelength detection for drift compensation. Sensors have been developed for solution pH, NH3, ethylene, CO2, and dissolved metal ions. In addition, unique PC-compatible optoelectronic interfaces, as well as distributed measurement systems, so that integrated detection systems are now available. In this paper recent efforts to develop sensors for critical nutrient ions are presented.

Abstract:Optical based sensing systems that measure luminescence, fluorescence, reflectance and absorbance, etc., are some of the areas of applications of optical immunosensors. Immunological methods rely on specific binding of an antibody (monoclonal, polyclonal or engineered) to an antigen. Detection of specific microorganisms and microbial toxins requires immobilization of specific antibodies onto a given transducer that can produce signal upon attachment of typical microbe/microbial toxins. Inherent features of immunosensors such as specificity, sensitivity, speed, ease and on-site analysis can be made use for various applications. Safety of food and environment has been a major concern of food technologists and health scientists in recent years. There exists a strong need for rapid and sensitive detection of different components of foods and beverages along with the food borne and water borne pathogens, toxins and pesticide residues with high specificity. Biosensors present attractive, efficient alternative techniques by providing quick and reliable performances. There is a very good potential for application of biosensors for monitoring food quality and safety in food and bioprocessing industries in India.

Abstract:Globally, there is active development of photonic sensors incorporating multidisciplinary research. The ultimate objective is to develop small, low-cost, sensitive, selective, quick, durable, remote-controllable sensors that are resistant to electromagnetic interference. Different photonic sensor designs and advances in photonic frameworks have shown the possibility to realize these capabilities. In this review paper, the latest developments in the field of optical waveguide and fiber-based sensors which can serve for environmental monitoring are discussed. Several important topics such as toxic gas, water quality, indoor environment, and natural disaster monitoring are reviewed.
