Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:Tetraphenylpyrazine-triphenylamine (TPP-TPA) was used to detect water traces in organic solvents by monitoring the shift of the fluorescence peak wavelength. This wavelength based method avoids the intrinsic problems of fluorescence intensity change based methods. The use of optical fibres for the detection provides a remote and field-deployable sensing ability.

Abstract:Effective response to potentially dangerous environmental situations that can arise requires accurate and real time data on the environment that is being monitored. The ability to respond in an appropriate time frame is determined by the sensitivity and response time of the method used for monitoring. Fiber optic sensors have been used and are capable of detecting chemical compounds within an environment; however the sensitivity and response time of this detection method needs to be improved for many sensing applications. Improving these characteristics can be accomplished by designing the structure of the optical fiber sensor to allow increased response time and sensitivity. Through the introduction of new structures and control of these structures, the sensitivity and response time can be designed for a specific application. We have developed a novel porous optical fiber that has potential applications in chemical and biological agent sensing systems. Sensing capabilities of the optical fiber are a result of the structure that is designed into the fiber. The structure of the fiber developed, results of characterization of the fiber and the methods of analysis employed are presented. Methods used to analyze this new fiber optic sensor include nitrogen absorption porosity data, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, and optical characterizations. The structure of the optical fiber is produced by controlling the processing parameters during the fiber draw as well as post processing stages. Fabrication methods and the processing steps that are used during the fiber optic production are also presented. Effect of altering processing conditions on the sensor structure is detailed and how this affects the performance of the fiber.
An Analytic and Experimental Treatment of Fiber Optic Chemical Sensing: Results on Evanescent Wave Spectrometry

Abstract:Standoff chemical sensing of chemicals and toxic compounds is very desirable for actively monitoring residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. Analytes such as toxic industrial compounds (TICs), chemical warfare agents (CWAs), and environmental pollutants (EPs) can pose serious threats to civilians, warfighters, and the environment. We report on highly sensitive, robust, and inexpensive distributed standoff fiber optic chemical sensors (FOCSs). FOCSs are activated by analytes reaching a sensing region and inducing a change in its optical properties. The information of a spectral response is transmitted by a shift in transmission spectra probed by evanescent waves, corresponding to the detection of an analyte. However, there are many factors that play a role in the implementation and optimization of such fiber sensors. We find it beneficial to construct the theory of general optochemical waveguide sensors to guide the analysis. We apply it to a specific fiber platfom that is robust, broadband, multi-target, scalable, and compatible to texitle fibers and fabrics - a focus of this work. The good agreement between the predicted and measured spectra of FOCSs exposed to Ammonia (NH$_3$) lends support to the analysis. The experiment yields a 1ppm sensitivity, representing the current best in class. The use of NH$_3$ in the test serves as a representative for a larger set of amine-based TICs, CWAs, EPs, and other chemical species, targeted for wide-area distributed coverage and textile-compatible sensors.

Abstract:Environmental monitoring has become essential in order to deal with environmental resources efficiently and safely in the realm of green technology. Environmental monitoring sensors are required for detection of environmental changes in industrial facilities under harsh conditions, (e.g. underground or subsea pipelines) in both the temporal and spatial domains. The utilization of optical fiber sensors is a promising scheme for environmental monitoring of this kind, owing to advantages including resistance to electromagnetic interference, durability under extreme temperatures and pressures, high transmission rate, light weight, small size, and flexibility. In this paper, the optical fiber sensors employed in environmental monitoring are summarized for understanding of their sensing principles and fabrication processes. Numerous specific applications in petroleum engineering, civil engineering, and agricultural engineering are explored, followed by discussion on the potentials of OFS in manufacturing.

Abstract:Abstract Heavy metal contaminations such as mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and zinc are becoming more serious and have become a hazard to human health. Due to their non-biodegradable nature, they can easily accumulate in the environment and cause toxicity even at low concentrations. Therefore, detecting the presence of these metal ions requires a highly sensitive sensing method. Traditional detection methods, such as electrochemical analysis, require complicated sample preparation, are costly, and typically require a lengthy measurement period. These days, optical fiber sensors have been acknowledged due to their unique characteristics such as compact size, high sensitivity, low cost, high flexibility, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. An overview of an optical fiber sensor technology for heavy chemical measurement is discussed in this paper. The sensing mechanisms are summarized, as well as the chemical water quality parameters and sensitivities.

Abstract:Recently, human industrial practices and certain activities have caused the widespread spread of emerging contaminants throughout the environmental matrix, even in trace amounts, which constitute a serious threat to human health and environmental ecology, and have therefore attracted the attention of research scholars. Different traditional techniques are used to monitor water pollutants, However, they still have some disadvantages such as high costs, ecological problems and treatment times, and require technicians and researchers to operate them effectively. There is therefore an urgent need to develop simple, inexpensive and highly sensitive methods to sense and detect these toxic environmental contaminants. Optical fiber microfluidic coupled sensors offer different advantages over other detection technologies, allowing manipulation of light through controlled microfluidics, precise detection results and good stability, and have therefore become a logical device for screening and identifying environmental contaminants. This paper reviews the application of fiber optic microfluidic sensors in emerging environmental contaminant detection, focusing on the characteristics of different emerging contaminant types, different types of fiber optic microfluidic sensors, methodological principles of detection, and specific emerging contaminant detection applications. The optical detection methods in fiber optic microfluidic chips and their respective advantages and disadvantages are analyzed in the discussion. The applications of fiber optic biochemical sensors in microfluidic chips, especially for the detection of emerging contaminants in the aqueous environment, such as personal care products, endocrine disruptors, and perfluorinated compounds, are reviewed. Finally, the prospects of fiber optic microfluidic coupled sensors in environmental detection and related fields are foreseen.

Abstract:The feasibility of a compact, modular sensing system able to quantify the presence of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) in nutrient-containing fertilizer water was investigated. Direct UV-Vis spectroscopy combined with optical fibers were employed to design modular compact sensing systems able to record absorption spectra of nutrient solutions resulting from local producer samples. N, P, and K spectral interference was studied by mixtures of commercial fertilizer solutions to simulate real conditions in hydroponic productions. This study demonstrates that the use of bands for the quantification of nitrogen with linear or logarithmic regression models does not produce analytical grade calibrations. Furthermore, multivariate regression models, i.e., Partial Least Squares (PLS), which consider specimens interference, perform poorly for low absorbance nutrients. The high interference present in the spectra has proven to be solved by an innovative self-learning artificial intelligence algorithm that is able to find interference modes among a spectral database to produce consistent predictions. By correctly modeling the existing interferences, analytical grade quantification of N, P, and K has proven feasible. The results of this work open the possibility of real-time NPK monitoring in Micro-Irrigation Systems.

Abstract:Optical fibre sensors are an essential subset of optical fibre technology, designed specifically for sensing and measuring several physical parameters. These sensors offer unique advantages over traditional sensors, making them gradually more valuable in a wide range of applications. They can detect extremely small variations in the physical parameters they are designed to measure, such as analytes in the case of biosensing. This high sensitivity allows them to detect subtle variations in temperature, pressure, strain, the refractive index of analytes, vibration, and other environmental factors with exceptional accuracy. Moreover, these sensors enable remote sensing capabilities. Since light signals are used to carry information, the sensing elements can be placed at distant or inaccessible sites and still communicate the data back to the central monitoring system without signal degradation. In recent times, different attractive configurations and approaches have been proposed to enhance the sensitivity of the optical fibre-based sensor and are briefly explained in this review. However, we believe that the choice of optical fibre sensor configuration should be designated based on the specific application. As these sensors continue to evolve and improve, they will play an increasingly vital role in critical monitoring and control applications across various industries.

Abstract:The development of highly-sensitive and miniaturized sensors that capable of real-time analytes detection is highly desirable. Nowadays, toxic or colorless gas detection, air pollution monitoring, harmful chemical, pressure, strain, humidity, and temperature sensors based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) are increasing rapidly due to its compact structure, fast response and efficient light controlling capabilities. The propagating light through the PCF can be controlled by varying the structural parameters and core-cladding materials, as a result, evanescent field can be enhanced significantly which is the main component of the PCF based gas/chemical sensors. The aim of this chapter is to (1) describe the principle operation of PCF based gas/ chemical sensors, (2) discuss the important PCF properties for optical sensors, (3) extensively discuss the different types of microstructured optical fiber based gas/ chemical sensors, (4) study the effects of different core-cladding shapes, and fiber background materials on sensing performance, and (5) highlight the main challenges of PCF based gas/ chemical sensors and possible solutions.

Abstract:Fiber‐optic sensors based on Bragg gratings, long‐period gratings, interferometry, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), fluorescence, and light diffusion are analyzed. The foundations of chemical and biosensing are addressed and the recent progress in numerous sensing fields, including environmental, industrial, and biomedical applications, are discussed. The review highlights the strategies and techniques used to overcome the sensing challenges. Fiber‐optic technology emerged originally for applications in data transmission and telecommunications. However, sensors based on fiber‐optics have been developed rapidly because of their excellent sensing performances and capability to function in remote and harsh environments. The usage of fiber‐optic sensors has flourished in many fields over the past 30 years due to the fiber‐optic's inherent advantages: cost‐effectiveness, miniaturized size, light weight, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. This work reviews the fiber‐optic sensors based on Bragg gratings, long period gratings, interferometers, surface plasmon resonance, fluorescence, and light diffusion. Brief theory of sensing principle, fabrication method, applications, advantages and disadvantages of the different fiber‐optic sensors, are addressed. Paper-Based Multiplex Sensors for the Optical Detection of Plant Stress

Abstract:The rising population and the ongoing climate crisis call for improved means to monitor and optimise agriculture. A promising approach to tackle current challenges in food production is the early diagnosis of plant diseases through non-invasive methods, such as the detection of volatiles. However, current devices for detection of multiple volatiles are based on electronic noses, which are expensive, require complex circuit assembly, may involve metal oxides with heating elements, and cannot easily be adapted for some applications that require miniaturisation or limit front-end use of electronic components. To address these challenges, a low-cost optoelectronic nose using chemo-responsive colorimetric dyes drop-casted onto filter paper has been developed in the current work. The final sensors could be used for the quantitative detection of up to six plant volatiles through changes in colour intensities with a sub-ppm level limit of detection, one of the lowest limits of detection reported so far using colorimetric gas sensors. Sensor colouration could be analysed using a low-cost spectrometer and the results could be processed using a microcontroller. The measured volatiles could be used for the early detection of plant abiotic stress as early as two days after exposure to two different stresses: high salinity and starvation. This approach allowed a lowering of costs to GBP 1 per diagnostic sensing paper. Furthermore, the small size of the paper sensors allows for their use in confined settings, such as Petri dishes. This detection of abiotic stress could be easily achieved by exposing the devices to living plants for 1 h. This technology has the potential to be used for monitoring of plant development in field applications, early recognition of stress, implementation of preventative measures, and mitigation of harvest losses.

Abstract:The demand on sensors for detecting chemical and biological agents is greater than ever before, including medical, environmental, food safety, military, and security applications. At present, most detection or sensing techniques tend to be either non-molecular specific, bulky, expensive, relatively inaccurate, or unable to provide real time data. Clearly, alternative sensing technologies are urgently needed. Recently, we have been working to develop a compact fiber optic surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor system that integrates various novel ideas to achieve compactness, high sensitivity and consistency, molecular specificity, and automatic preliminary identification capabilities. The unique sensor architecture is expected to bring SERS sensors to practical applications due to a combination of 1) novel SERS substrates that provide the high sensitivity and consistency, molecular specificity, and applicability to a wide range of compounds; 2) a unique hollow core optical fiber probe with double SERS substrate structure that provides the compactness, reliability, low cost, and ease of sampling; and 3) an innovative matched spectral filter set that provides automatic preliminary molecule identification. In this paper, we will review the principle of operation and some of the important milestones of fiber SERS sensor development with emphasis on our recent work to integrate photonic crystal fiber SERS probes with a portable Raman spectrometer and to demonstrate a matched spectral filter for molecule identification.

Abstract:Recent advances in fiber optics (FOs) and the numerous advantages of light over electronic systems have boosted the utility and demand for optical sensors in various military, industry and social fields. Environmental and atmospheric monitoring, earth and space sciences, industrial chemical processing and biotechnology, law enforcement, digital imaging, scanning, and printing are exemplars of them. The ubiquity of photonic technologies could drive down prices which reduced the cost of optical fibers and lasers. Fiber optic sensors (FOSs) offer a wide spectrum of advantages over traditional sensing systems, such as small size and longer lifetime. Immunity to electromagnetic interference, amenability to multiplexing, and high sensitivity make FOs the sensor technology of choice in several fields, including the healthcare and aerospace sectors. FOSs show reliable and rigid sensing tasks over conventional electrical and electronic sensors. This paper presents an executive review of optical fiber sensors and the most beneficial applications.
An optical path multiplexing fiber sensor for ultra-low COD levels measurement using UV-Vis spectrometry

Abstract:In this work, we have developed a novel fiber sensor based on optical path multiplexing (OPM) for measuring ultra-low chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. The cumulative effect brought by the novel OPM structure could amplify sensor’s sensitivity, which significantly improves the detectability in UV-Vis spectrometry method. Meanwhile, structural optimization method based on maximum coupling efficiency have been demonstrated. In the ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) absorption spectroscopy experiment, the absorbance of 215nm wavelength and the area under absorption spectrum were used to estimate the COD concentration, respectively. The results shown that they all increased linearly with the change of COD concentration, and kept the strictly linear relationship in the ranges of 0~6mg/L. Their linear correlation coefficients are above 0.9977. Surprisingly, the COD measurement curve represented by the area under absorption spectrum gave a better performance in this study, whose RMSE, LOD and LOQ were superior to 0.0165mg/L, 0.0362mg/L and 0.1207mg/L, respectively. The good performance indicators revealed accurate measuring ability of the OPM-based fiber sensor for ultra-low COD levels. More importantly, the open architecture in OPM-based fiber sensor has shown a good application prospect for in-situ water quality assessment.

Abstract:The continuous development of society has led to the flourishing of environmental chemistry and biomedical fields, as well as to the research and development of novel functional materials and sensors. Some novel materials have excellent optical and biological/chemical properties and can be coupled with the optical fiber grating. The coupling between the materials and optical fiber grating can improve the performance due to the advanced materials can amplify the changing signals generated during the reaction with analytes of organic compounds. Despite the great achievements in the development of bio- and chemical-optical fiber grating sensors, there is no publicly available systematic review of the recent advances in the use of materials combined with optical fiber grating in organic substances sensing available in the literature since January 2016. Thus, we summarized the sensing principles of the bio- and chemical-optical fiber grating with and without surface plasmon resonance. We discussed the performance parameters such as sensitivity, selectivity, detection range, and low limit of detection for detection of organic substances including organic pollutants, life organics (glucose, hemoglobin, cancer markers, antibody-antigen, biotin and streptavidin, DNA, enzymes), microorganisms, and other organic substances. We analyzed the advantages and limitations of optical fiber grating sensors and presented challenges in their practical applications and future research directions.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate determination of pH is essential, yet a single technology is relied upon for almost all pH measurements. Here, a new optical pH sensor is described. Two highly photostable fluorescent dyes with a polymerizable side chain are incorporated into a composite polymer that allows for fast transport of protons. A pH‐responsive dye and a reference dye with limited response to pH are used, thus allowing for determining pH using a ratiometric fluorescence intensity response. The sensor material—dyes covalently attached in the composite polymer—is deposited on a polycarbonate hemiwicking substrate, and immobilized on the inside of a shaker flask. In this manner, two robust pH optodes with p K a values of 5.30 and 6.11 are prepared. The pH‐responsive composite materials are addressed using fiber optics, and the response is recorded on a fiber spectrometer. The optodes are shown to have low drift, fast response time, no leachables, and the sensor is shown to work in heterogeneous media exemplified with coffee, beer, and cola.
