Abstract:Legislation and public sentiment throughout the world have promoted fairness metrics, explainability, and interpretability as prescriptions for the responsible development of ethical artificial intelligence systems. Despite the importance of these three pillars in the foundation of the field, they can be challenging to operationalize and attempts to solve the problems in production environments often feel Sisyphean. This difficulty stems from a number of factors: fairness metrics are computationally difficult to incorporate into training and rarely alleviate all of the harms perpetrated by these systems. Interpretability and explainability can be gamed to appear fair, may inadvertently reduce the privacy of personal information contained in training data, and increase user confidence in predictions -- even when the explanations are wrong. In this work, we propose a framework for responsibly developing artificial intelligence systems by incorporating lessons from the field of information security and the secure development lifecycle to overcome challenges associated with protecting users in adversarial settings. In particular, we propose leveraging the concepts of threat modeling, design review, penetration testing, and incident response in the context of developing AI systems as ways to resolve shortcomings in the aforementioned methods.

Abstract:The emergence of AI tools in cybersecurity creates many opportunities and uncertainties. A focus group with advanced graduate students in cybersecurity revealed the potential depth and breadth of the challenges and opportunities. The salient issues are access to open source or free tools, documentation, curricular diversity, and clear articulation of ethical principles for AI cybersecurity education. Confronting the "black box" mentality in AI cybersecurity work is also of the greatest importance, doubled by deeper and prior education in foundational AI work. Systems thinking and effective communication were considered relevant areas of educational improvement. Future AI educators and practitioners need to address these issues by implementing rigorous technical training curricula, clear documentation, and frameworks for ethically monitoring AI combined with critical and system's thinking and communication skills.

Abstract:This article attempts to bridge the gap between widely discussed ethical principles of Human-centered AI (HCAI) and practical steps for effective governance. Since HCAI systems are developed and implemented in multiple organizational structures, I propose 15 recommendations at three levels of governance: team, organization, and industry. The recommendations are intended to increase the reliability, safety, and trustworthiness of HCAI systems: (1) reliable systems based on sound software engineering practices, (2) safety culture through business management strategies, and (3) trustworthy certification by independent oversight. Software engineering practices within teams include audit trails to enable analysis of failures, software engineering workflows, verification and validation testing, bias testing to enhance fairness, and explainable user interfaces. The safety culture within organizations comes from management strategies that include leadership commitment to safety, hiring and training oriented to safety, extensive reporting of failures and near misses, internal review boards for problems and future plans, and alignment with industry standard practices. The trustworthiness certification comes from industry-wide efforts that include government interventions and regulation, accounting firms conducting external audits, insurance companies compensating for failures, non-governmental and civil society organizations advancing design principles, and professional organizations and research institutes developing standards, policies, and novel ideas. The larger goal of effective governance is to limit the dangers and increase the benefits of HCAI to individuals, organizations, and society.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great promise to empower us with knowledge and augment our effectiveness. We can -- and must -- ensure that we keep humans safe and in control, particularly with regard to government and public sector applications that affect broad populations. How can AI development teams harness the power of AI systems and design them to be valuable to humans? Diverse teams are needed to build trustworthy artificial intelligent systems, and those teams need to coalesce around a shared set of ethics. There are many discussions in the AI field about ethics and trust, but there are few frameworks available for people to use as guidance when creating these systems. The Human-Machine Teaming (HMT) Framework for Designing Ethical AI Experiences described in this paper, when used with a set of technical ethics, will guide AI development teams to create AI systems that are accountable, de-risked, respectful, secure, honest, and usable. To support the team's efforts, activities to understand people's needs and concerns will be introduced along with the themes to support the team's efforts. For example, usability testing can help determine if the audience understands how the AI system works and complies with the HMT Framework. The HMT Framework is based on reviews of existing ethical codes and best practices in human-computer interaction and software development. Human-machine teams are strongest when human users can trust AI systems to behave as expected, safely, securely, and understandably. Using the HMT Framework to design trustworthy AI systems will provide support to teams in identifying potential issues ahead of time and making great experiences for humans.
AI for the Common Good?! Pitfalls, challenges, and Ethics Pen-Testing

Abstract:Recently, many AI researchers and practitioners have embarked on research visions that involve doing AI for "Good". This is part of a general drive towards infusing AI research and practice with ethical thinking. One frequent theme in current ethical guidelines is the requirement that AI be good for all, or: contribute to the Common Good. But what is the Common Good, and is it enough to want to be good? Via four lead questions, I will illustrate challenges and pitfalls when determining, from an AI point of view, what the Common Good is and how it can be enhanced by AI. The questions are: What is the problem / What is a problem?, Who defines the problem?, What is the role of knowledge?, and What are important side effects and dynamics? The illustration will use an example from the domain of "AI for Social Good", more specifically "Data Science for Social Good". Even if the importance of these questions may be known at an abstract level, they do not get asked sufficiently in practice, as shown by an exploratory study of 99 contributions to recent conferences in the field. Turning these challenges and pitfalls into a positive recommendation, as a conclusion I will draw on another characteristic of computer-science thinking and practice to make these impediments visible and attenuate them: "attacks" as a method for improving design. This results in the proposal of ethics pen-testing as a method for helping AI designs to better contribute to the Common Good.

Abstract:Despite interest in communicating ethical problems and social contexts within the undergraduate curriculum to advance Public Interest Technology (PIT) goals, interventions at the graduate level remain largely unexplored. This may be due to the conflicting ways through which distinct Artificial Intelligence (AI) research tracks conceive of their interface with social contexts. In this paper we track the historical emergence of sociotechnical inquiry in three distinct subfields of AI research: AI Safety, Fair Machine Learning (Fair ML) and Human-in-the-Loop (HIL) Autonomy. We show that for each subfield, perceptions of PIT stem from the particular dangers faced by past integration of technical systems within a normative social order. We further interrogate how these histories dictate the response of each subfield to conceptual traps, as defined in the Science and Technology Studies literature. Finally, through a comparative analysis of these currently siloed fields, we present a roadmap for a unified approach to sociotechnical graduate pedagogy in AI.

Abstract:In 2020, GPT-3 defined itself as a thinking robot. The history of AI development is identified with machines becoming increasingly intelligent, but behind it lies the human factor, the soaring of the human mind. However, the question of machine ethics is also a question of cultural ethics. Based on in-depth interviews conducted in seven industries, the author reveals that ethical considerations are not yet taken into account in the development of AI systems. To support practical implementation, the author identifies two shortcomings based on a comparative analysis of the EU’s AI Act and Ethical Guidelines for Trustworthy AI: (1) missing ethical sensitisation and training of AI system developers and supervisors; (2) suggested approaches to handling harmful feedback loops and decision-making biases. The author uses the philosophical and ethical heritage of 21 philosophers as a compass to propose solutions for the identified gaps and deficiencies of organisational integration.

Conventional security measures, struggling against the complexity of contemporary cyber threats, fail to provide adequate protection. In response, AI, driven by machine learning algorithms and predictive analytics, becomes a dynamic and adaptive entity strengthening digital defenses. The investigation commences with a comprehensive analysis of the methods by which AI enhances danger detection. Behavioral analytics utilizes AI to assess user behaviors and network activity, creating a proactive baseline, while anomaly detection and predictive analysis harness machine learning to recognize deviations from the norm and forecast potential dangers. This comprehensive strategy enables organizations to remain proactive against emerging cyber threats. Moreover, the study explores the crucial function of AI in incident response. AI-driven automated incident analysis expedites reaction times by rapidly analyzing and prioritizing security warnings. The amalgamation of AI with threat intelligence streams guarantees a perpetually updated knowledge repository, enabling organizations to respond adeptly to emerging dangers. The dynamic flexibility of AI allows systems to evolve and learn from each incidence, hence enhancing their defensive capacities over time. The discourse recognizes the significant advantages of AI in cybersecurity while simultaneously addressing the obstacles associated with its application. False positives, a potential drawback, require a measured approach to prevent the perception of typical action as harmful. Ethical factors, including privacy concerns and responsible AI practices, highlight the necessity for a judicious and principled incorporation of AI in cybersecurity. The paper underscores the essential collaborative synergy between human expertise and AI technologies. The essay emphasizes the importance of continuous investment in AI training programs for cybersecurity professionals, acknowledging that AI is best successful when enhanced by human insights. Additionally, it advocates for routine security audits to assess and refine cybersecurity protocols, collaborative research efforts to tackle ethical issues, and user education activities to strengthen collective defenses. As the digital landscape evolves, the incorporation of AI in cybersecurity seems not as a cure-all but as a formidable ally. This partnership guarantees a robust protection against increasingly complex cyber-attacks, reinforcing the basis for a secure digital future.

Abstract:Abstract Ethical considerations are the fabric of society, and they foster cooperation, help, and sacrifice for the greater good. Advances in AI create a greater need to examine ethical considerations involving the development and implementation of such systems. Integrating ethics into artificial intelligence-based programs is crucial for preventing negative outcomes, such as privacy breaches and biased decision making. Human–AI teaming (HAIT) presents additional challenges, as the ethical principles and moral theories that provide justification for them are not yet computable by machines. To that effect, models of human judgments and decision making, such as the agent-deed-consequence (ADC) model, will be crucial to inform the ethical guidance functions in AI team mates and to clarify how and why humans (dis)trust machines. The current paper will examine the ADC model as it is applied to the context of HAIT, and the challenges associated with the use of human-centric ethical considerations when applied to an AI context.

Abstract:It is an age of artificial intelligence (AI), and the article seeks to explore how one might integrate ethical considerations into AI design and use. It asks how ethics can be integrated into the curriculum of AI, what ethical structures could exist in the design of an algorithm or intelligent machine, and whether big data can help solve these issues. The study uses an interdisciplinary approach, looking at case studies, and the discussion of ethical dilemmas. The study uses the analysis of practical applications in such fields as healthcare or communication to explore AI ethics. This kindles a torch that illuminates a fact: It is necessary to build up one's capacities both technically and morally for AI specialists need an educational curriculum, that stresses the need for all principles (including fairness, transparency, and accountability) to be built into AI design as well as decision-making processes. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach. The paper stresses the significance of ethical dimensions in an increasingly fast-moving AI environment. It seeks to cultivate moral reflection about AI, holding out for technology that is not only advanced but also ethical and more responsible.

Abstract:The range of application of artificial intelligence (AI) is vast, as is the potential for harm. Growing awareness of potential risks from AI systems has spurred action to address those risks, while eroding confidence in AI systems and the organizations that develop them. A 2019 study found over 80 organizations that published and adopted "AI ethics principles'', and more have joined since. But the principles often leave a gap between the "what" and the "how" of trustworthy AI development. Such gaps have enabled questionable or ethically dubious behavior, which casts doubts on the trustworthiness of specific organizations, and the field more broadly. There is thus an urgent need for concrete methods that both enable AI developers to prevent harm and allow them to demonstrate their trustworthiness through verifiable behavior. Below, we explore mechanisms (drawn from arXiv:2004.07213) for creating an ecosystem where AI developers can earn trust - if they are trustworthy. Better assessment of developer trustworthiness could inform user choice, employee actions, investment decisions, legal recourse, and emerging governance regimes.
Shaping AI's Impact on Billions of Lives

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI), like any transformative technology, has the potential to be a double-edged sword, leading either toward significant advancements or detrimental outcomes for society as a whole. As is often the case when it comes to widely-used technologies in market economies (e.g., cars and semiconductor chips), commercial interest tends to be the predominant guiding factor. The AI community is at risk of becoming polarized to either take a laissez-faire attitude toward AI development, or to call for government overregulation. Between these two poles we argue for the community of AI practitioners to consciously and proactively work for the common good. This paper offers a blueprint for a new type of innovation infrastructure including 18 concrete milestones to guide AI research in that direction. Our view is that we are still in the early days of practical AI, and focused efforts by practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders can still maximize the upsides of AI and minimize its downsides. We talked to luminaries such as recent Nobelist John Jumper on science, President Barack Obama on governance, former UN Ambassador and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice on security, philanthropist Eric Schmidt on several topics, and science fiction novelist Neal Stephenson on entertainment. This ongoing dialogue and collaborative effort has produced a comprehensive, realistic view of what the actual impact of AI could be, from a diverse assembly of thinkers with deep understanding of this technology and these domains. From these exchanges, five recurring guidelines emerged, which form the cornerstone of a framework for beginning to harness AI in service of the public good. They not only guide our efforts in discovery but also shape our approach to deploying this transformative technology responsibly and ethically.

The book has been designed to be accessible to readers from diverse backgrounds. You do not need to have studied AI, philosophy, or other such topics. The content is skimmable and somewhat modular, so that you can choose which chapters to read. We introduce mathematical formulas in a few places to specify claims more precisely, but readers should be able to understand the main points without these.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has prompted significant societal, ethical, and legal concerns regarding their deployment in information technology (IT) systems. Addressing these concerns necessitates the establishment of a robust ethical framework to guide AI development and integration into IT systems. This paper presents a comprehensive conceptual framework aimed at fostering ethical AI development within IT systems. The proposed framework incorporates multidisciplinary perspectives, drawing upon principles from ethics, computer science, law, and philosophy. It emphasizes the integration of ethical considerations at every stage of the AI development lifecycle, including design, implementation, deployment, and maintenance. Central to this framework is the recognition of AI systems as socio-technical artifacts with profound impacts on individuals, communities, and societies at large. Key components of the framework include transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy, and security. Transparency entails ensuring that AI algorithms and decision-making processes are comprehensible and explainable to stakeholders, thereby fostering trust and enabling scrutiny. Accountability mechanisms are essential for attributing responsibility for AI-driven outcomes and facilitating recourse in cases of harm or injustice. Beyond Bias and Compliance: Towards Individual Agency and Plurality of Ethics in AI

Abstract:AI ethics is an emerging field with multiple, competing narratives about how to best solve the problem of building human values into machines. Two major approaches are focused on bias and compliance, respectively. But neither of these ideas fully encompasses ethics: using moral principles to decide how to act in a particular situation. Our method posits that the way data is labeled plays an essential role in the way AI behaves, and therefore in the ethics of machines themselves. The argument combines a fundamental insight from ethics (i.e. that ethics is about values) with our practical experience building and scaling machine learning systems. We want to build AI that is actually ethical by first addressing foundational concerns: how to build good systems, how to define what is good in relation to system architecture, and who should provide that definition. Building ethical AI creates a foundation of trust between a company and the users of that platform. But this trust is unjustified unless users experience the direct value of ethical AI. Until users have real control over how algorithms behave, something is missing in current AI solutions. This causes massive distrust in AI, and apathy towards AI ethics solutions. The scope of this paper is to propose an alternative path that allows for the plurality of values and the freedom of individual expression. Both are essential for realizing true moral character.

Big data ethics, machine ethics or information ethics? Navigating the maze of applied ethics in IT

Abstract:Digitalization efforts are rapidly spreading across societies, challenging new and important ethical issues that arise from technological development. Software developers, designers and managerial decision-makers are ever more expected to consider ethical values and conduct normative evaluations when building digital products. Yet, when one looks for guidance in the academic literature one encounters a plethora of branches of applied ethics. Depending on the context of the system that is to be developed, interesting subfields like big data ethics, machine ethics, information ethics, AI ethics or computer ethics (to only name a few) may present themselves. In this paper we want to offer assistance to any member of a development team by giving a clear and brief introduction into two fields of ethical endeavor (normative ethics and applied ethics), describing how they are related to each other and, finally, provide an ordering of the different branches of applied ethics (big data ethics, machine ethics, information ethics, AI ethics or computer ethics etc.) which have gained traction over the last years. Finally, we discuss an example in the domain of facial recognition software in the domain of medicine to illustrate how this process of normative analysis might be conducted.
Navigating the Grey Area: Students' Ethical Dilemmas in Using AI Tools for Coding Assignments

Abstract:Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, particularly in coding assignments for Information Technology (IT) students, represents a rapidly evolving research area with significant implications for academic practices and integrity. This study focuses on the ethical challenges faced by IT students when using AI tools like ChatGPT for coding assignments. Despite the growing use of AI in education, there is a notable gap in understanding how students perceive and navigate the ethical dilemmas associated with these technologies. To address this gap, this study employed a thematic analysis of qualitative data collected from interviews with IT students. The results reveal a complex landscape of ethical considerations, including issues of originality, academic integrity, and the potential for misuse of AI tools. Students reported challenges in balancing the benefits of AI assistance with the need to maintain independent learning and adhere to ethical standards. The implications of this research are significant for educators, institutions, and policymakers. Understanding the ethical challenges students face can inform the development of more effective teaching strategies, assessment methods, and institutional policies. This study contributes to the ongoing dialogue about AI ethics in academia, providing valuable insights for creating an educational environment that leverages the power of AI while upholding the principles of academic integrity and meaningful learning.
