Abstract:In this expository note, we discuss some results of the author on the structure of derived categories of equivariant coherent sheaves and the derived categories of geometric invariant theory quotients. We take a recent perspective, emphasizing the theory of restricted local cohomology. We also discuss several applications and concrete examples: studying the effects of birational modification on derived categories, constructing categorical completions of equivariant derived categories, and constructing actions of generalized braid groups on derived categories of GIT quotients. This is a contribution to the proceedings of the International Congress of Basic Science, held in July 2024.

Equivariant Moduli Theory on $ K3 $ Surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we study equivariant moduli spaces of sheaves on a $ K3 $ surface $ X $ under a symplectic action of a finite group. We prove that under some mild conditions, equivariant moduli spaces of sheaves on $ X $ are irreducible symplectic manifolds deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on $ X $ via a connection between Gieseker and Bridgeland moduli spaces, as well as the derived McKay correspondence.

Abstract:We unify problems about the equivariant geometry of symmetric quiver representation varieties, in the finite type setting, with the corresponding problems for symmetric varieties $GL(n)/K$ where $K$ is an orthogonal or symplectic group. In particular, we translate results about singularities of orbit closures; combinatorics of orbit closure containment; and torus equivariant cohomology and K-theory between these classes of varieties. We obtain these results by constructing explicit embeddings with nice properties of homogeneous fiber bundles over type $A$ symmetric quiver representation varieties into symmetric varieties.

Three approaches to a categorical Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds of non-Eckardt type via the equivariant Kuznetsov components

Abstract:Let $Y$ be a cubic threefold with a non-Eckardt type involution $\tau$. Our first main result is that the $\tau$-equivariant category of the Kuznetsov component $\mathcal{K}u_{\mathbb{Z}_2}(Y)$ determines the isomorphism class of $Y$ for general $(Y,\tau)$. We shall prove this categorical Torelli theorem via three approaches: a noncommutative Hodge theoretical one (using a generalization of the intermediate Jacobian construction due to Alexander Perry), a Bridgeland moduli theoretical one (using equivariant stability conditions), and a Chow theoretical one (using some techniques in [kuznetsovnonclodedfield2021]).The remaining part of the paper is devoted to proving an equivariant infinitesimal categorical Torelli for non-Eckardt cubic threefolds $(Y,\tau)$. To accomplish it, we prove a compatibility theorem on the algebra structures of the Hochschild cohomology of the bounded derived category $D^b(X)$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ and on the Hochschild cohomology of a semi-orthogonal component of $D^b(X)$. Another key ingredient is a generalization of a result in [macri2009infinitesima] which shows that the twisted Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg isomorphism is compatible with the actions on the Hochschild cohomology and on the singular cohomology induced by an automorphism of $X$. In appendix, we prove an equivariant categorical Torelli theorem for arbitrary cubic threefold with a geometric involution under a natural assumption.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of noncommutative ruled surfaces over orbifold curves to find equivariant deformations of moduli spaces of framed sheaves on equivariant elliptic surfaces. These derived categories are a common generalization of the category of modules of the preprojective algebra and of the category of twisted D-modules over a curve. We show that the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on an equivariant elliptic surface is controlled by an elliptic root system, and conjecture in general and prove in special cases that moduli spaces of objects in these derived categories provides a deformation of birational models for the Hilbert scheme. We also study the applications of this deformation to the geometric representation theory of the central fiber, specifically to produce geometric correspondences giving rise to Lie algebra actions on the equivariant cohomology of the central fiber and give formulas for the action of the Namikawa-Markman Weyl group of monodromy reflections in terms of this Lie algebra.

Half-spherical twists on derived categories of coherent sheaves

Abstract:For a flat morphism $\pi \colon X \to T$ between smooth quasi-projective varieties and its fiber $X_0$, we prove that spherical objects on $D^b(X)$ pushed-forward from $D^b(X_0)$ induce autoequivalences of $D^b(X_0)$ itself. Our construction provides new derived symmetries for some singular varieties, which include singular fibers of elliptic surfaces (commonly referred to as Kodaira fibers) and type $III$ degenerations of K3 surfaces. In the case of Kodaira fibers of type $I_n$, we also show the induced autoequivalences of $D^b(X_0)$ correspond to the half twists on the $n$-punctured $2$-torus via homological mirror symmetry. As an application, we describe the autoequivalence groups of elliptic surfaces in terms of mapping class groups of punctured tori.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the equivariant covering type of a space X on which a finite group G acts and study its properties. The equivariant covering type measures the size of G-equivariant good covers of X and is thus an extension of the covering type of a space, introduced by Karoubi and Weibel. We show that the equivariant covering type is a G-homotopy invariant and describe its relation with other G-invariants, like the equivariant LS-category, G-genus, and the multiplicative structures of equivariant cohomology theories. We also compute the G-covering type of regular G-graphs, give estimates for orientation-preserving actions on surfaces and for the projectivizations of complex representations of G and cohomology spheres. As an application, we derive estimates of sizes of minimal G-triangulations for various G-spaces.

Abstract:We formulate an equivariant conservation of number, which proves that a generalized Euler number of a complex equivariant vector bundle can be computed as a sum of local indices of an arbitrary section. This involves an expansion of the Pontryagin--Thom transfer in the equivariant setting. We leverage this result to commence a study of enumerative geometry in the presence of a group action. As an illustration of the power of this machinery, we prove that any smooth complex cubic surface defined by a symmetric polynomial has 27 lines whose orbit types under the $S_4$-action on $\mathbb{C}P^3$ are given by $[S_4/C_2]+[S_4/C_2'] + [S_4/D_8]$, where $C_2$ and $C_2'$ denote two non-conjugate cyclic subgroups of order two. As a consequence we demonstrate that a real symmetric cubic surface can only contain 3 or 27 real lines.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:A classical set of birational invariants of a variety are its spaces of pluricanonical forms and some of their canonically defined subspaces. Each of these vector spaces admits a typical metric structure which is also birationally invariant. These vector spaces so metrized will be referred to as the pseudonormed spaces of the original varieties. A fundamental question is the following: Given two mildly singular projective varieties with some of the first variety's pseudonormed spaces being isometric to the corresponding ones of the second variety's, can one construct a birational map between them that induces these isometries? In this work, a positive answer to this question is given for varieties of general type. This can be thought of as a theorem of Torelli type for birational equivalence.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that there are exactly two $G$-minimal surfaces which are $G$-birational to the quintic del Pezzo surface, where $G \cong C_5 \rtimes C_4$. These surfaces are the quintic del Pezzo surface itself and the surface $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.

Abstract:We prove that the adjoint equivariant derived category of a reductive group $G$ is equivalent to the appropriately defined monoidal center of the torus-equivariant version of the Hecke category. We use this to give new proofs, independent of sheaf-theoretic set up, of the fact that the Drinfeld center of the abelian Hecke category is equivalent to the abelian category of unipotent character sheaves; and of a characterization of strongly-central sheaves on the torus.

Abstract:We define a categorical action of the shifted quantum loop group of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ on the derived categories of Quot schemes of finite length quotient sheaves on a smooth projective curve. As an application, we obtain a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived categories of Quot schemes, of representation theoretic origin. We use this decomposition to calculate the cohomology of interesting tautological vector bundles over the Quot scheme.

Abstract:We prove an extension of a celebrated equivariant bifurcation result of J. Smoller and A. Wasserman, in an abstract framework for geometric variational problems. With this purpose, we prove a slice theorem for continuous affine actions of a (finite-dimensional) Lie group on Banach manifolds. As an application, we discuss equivariant bifurcation of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, providing a few concrete examples and counter-examples.

Abstract:This is a considerably expanded version of the "pure" part of our 2002 preprint. We define a category of pure birational motives over a field, depending on the choice of an adequate equivalence relation on algebraic cycles. It is obtained by "killing" the Lefschetz motive in the corresponding category of effective motives. For rational equivalence, it encompasses Bloch's decomposition of the diagonal. We study the induced Chow-Künneth decompositions in this category, and establish relationships with Rost's cycle modules and the Albanese functor for smooth projective varieties.
