Abstract:For a flat morphism $\pi \colon X \to T$ between smooth quasi-projective varieties and its fiber $X_0$, we prove that spherical objects on $D^b(X)$ pushed-forward from $D^b(X_0)$ induce autoequivalences of $D^b(X_0)$ itself. Our construction provides new derived symmetries for some singular varieties, which include singular fibers of elliptic surfaces (commonly referred to as Kodaira fibers) and type $III$ degenerations of K3 surfaces. In the case of Kodaira fibers of type $I_n$, we also show the induced autoequivalences of $D^b(X_0)$ correspond to the half twists on the $n$-punctured $2$-torus via homological mirror symmetry. As an application, we describe the autoequivalence groups of elliptic surfaces in terms of mapping class groups of punctured tori.
Algebraic Geometry
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is in algebraic geometry: for a flat morphism \(\pi: X \to T\) between smooth quasi - projective varieties and its fiber \(X_0\), how to induce an automorphism of \(D^b(X_0)\) itself through spherical objects generalized from \(D^b(X_0)\) to \(D^b(X)\). Specifically, the author proves that when \(X\) is a flat but not necessarily smooth family of varieties and the base \(T\) is smooth, a new kind of automorphism, called half - spherical twists, can be introduced. These twists can provide new derived symmetries for some singular varieties, such as the singular fibers of elliptic surfaces (usually called Kodaira fibers) and K3 surfaces of type III degeneration. The main contribution of the paper lies in verifying that the twist of spherical objects from \(X_0\) to \(X\) is indeed a relative integral functor, and using this to construct a new automorphism group element. In addition, the paper also explores the applications of these half - spherical twists on the singular fibers of elliptic surfaces. In particular, through homological mirror symmetry, these twists are corresponded to half - twists on punctured tori, thereby further describing the automorphism group of elliptic surfaces. In short, this paper aims to expand the application range of spherical twists by introducing the concept of half - spherical twists, especially when dealing with families of varieties with singular fibers, providing a new method to study the automorphism groups of the derived categories of these varieties.
