THE EXISTENCE AND VISIBILITY EFFECTS OF DIRT ON ROAD MARKINGS

Abstract:The study consisted of 3 parts: dirt accumulation in real traffic; dirt analysis, the visibility of road markings. The results show that the retroreflective power is reduced by unfavourable road and weather conditions by as much as 75 percent in a week. Analysis of dirt collected from the road surface at 2 different road and weather conditions revealed that most of the dirt came from the road surface and a minor part from car tires. Dry and wet road markings with different retroreflective power, both single and in rows of ten were compared at various lighting conditions. The effect of dirt was small in daylight; it was moderate at night at low beam/low beam and severe at high beam. The visibility distances to the rows were much larger than to the single road markings. The effect of water on the road was inconsistent.
