Abstract:The suboptimal photocatalytic efficacy of Titanium (IV) oxide (TiO 2 ) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) has prompted an exploration into innovative materials for enhanced pollutant degradation in both water and air. This review rigorously examines novel photocatalytic materials designed to address a spectrum of pollutants, which includes, heavy metals, persistent organic compounds, pharmaceutical residues, and emerging contaminants. The investigation commences with a thorough exploration of the photocatalytic mechanism underlying these materials, unraveling the intricate processes that govern their pollutant-degrading capabilities. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis investigates the impact of various parameters—such as catalyst morphology, light sources, and reaction conditions—on the overall photocatalytic efficiency. This scrutiny provides valuable insights into optimizing the performance of photocatalysts under diverse environmental conditions. A pivotal component of this review involves an in-depth examination of the four most promising photocatalysts emerging from this research. Their unique attributes, coupled with a nuanced understanding of their challenges, are meticulously elucidated. Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis has long been considered to be one of the most promising approaches to tackling the myriad environmental issues. However, there are still many challenges for designing efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts and photocatalytic degradation systems for application in practical environmental remediation. In this review, we first systematically introduced the fundamental principles on the photocatalytic pollutant degradation. Then, the important considerations in the design of photocatalytic degradation systems are carefully addressed, including charge carrier dynamics, catalytic selectivity, photocatalyst stability, pollutant adsorption and photodegradation kinetics. Especially, the underlying mechanisms are thoroughly reviewed, including investigation of oxygen reduction properties and identification of reactive oxygen species and key intermediates. This review in environmental photocatalysis may inspire exciting new directions and methods for designing, fabricating and evaluating photocatalytic degradation systems for better environmental remediation and possibly other relevant fields, such as photocatalytic disinfection, water oxidation, and selective organic transformations.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is critically important for environmental remediation and renewable energy technologies. The ability to objectively characterize photocatalyst properties and photocatalysis processes is paramount for meaningful performance evaluation and fundamental studies to guide the design and development of high-performance photocatalysts and photocatalysis systems. Photocatalysis is essentially an electron transfer process, and photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) principles can be used to directly quantify transferred electrons to determine the intrinsic properties of photocatalysts and photocatalysis processes in isolation, without interference from counter reactions due to physically separated oxidation and reduction half-reactions. In this review, we discuss emphatically the PEC-based principles for characterizing intrinsic properties of photocatalysts and important processes of photocatalysis, with a particular focus on their environmental applications in the degradation of pollutants, disinfection, and detection of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Abstract:It is well-documented that large-scale pollution generated by human activity has a dramatic impact on ecosystems. In this context, removing harmful chemicals via photocatalysis has tremendous potential as a depollution method, utilizing freely available solar light and catalytic materials with low or negligible ecotoxicity. The main drawbacks, which aren't often addressed in the available literature, are the formation of harmful intermediate products, low reaction rates, limited catalyst stability, and difficult catalyst recovery. In most cases, published works assess the efficiency of tested photocatalysts from pollutant degradation studies, whereas identifying and quantifying by-products is not often conducted. This review summarizes the recent advances reported for the photocatalytic removal of some organic (e.g., alcohols, carboxylic acids, volatile organic compounds, phenol) and inorganic (e.g., NO3−) contaminants. The efficiency of various UV- and visible-light active photocatalysts and the reaction degradation pathways were explained, emphasizing the main factors contributing to their mineralization. The reaction mechanisms, the identification and quantification of degradation intermediates, and the implication of reactive active species (ROS) were discussed and analyzed for each category of model target pollutant. Additionally, the actual challenges and future photocatalytic approaches to improve environmental remediation were presented.

Abstract:The literature shows that both in laboratory and in industrial conditions, the photocatalytic oxidation method copes quite well with degradation of most environmental toxins and pathogenic microorganisms. However, the effective utilization of photocatalytic processes for environmental decontamination and disinfection requires significant technological advancement in both the area of semiconductor material synthesis and its application. Here, we focused on the presence and "photocatalytic capability" of photocatalysts among soil minerals and their potential contributions to the environmental decontamination in vitro and in vivo. Reactions caused by sunlight on the soil surface are involved in its normal redox activity, taking part also in the soil decontamination. However, their importance for decontamination in vivo cannot be overstated, due to the diversity of soils on the Earth, which is caused by the environmental conditions, such as climate, parent material, relief, vegetation, etc. The sunlight-induced reactions are just a part of complicated soil chemistry processes dependent on a plethora of environmental determinates. The multiplicity of affecting factors, which we tried to sketch from the perspective of chemists and environmental scientists, makes us rather skeptical about the effectiveness of the photocatalytic decontamination in vivo. On the other hand, there is a huge potential of the soils as the alternative and probably cheaper source of useful photocatalytic materials of unique properties. In our opinion, establishing collaboration between experts from different disciplines is the most crucial opportunity, as well as a challenge, for the advancement of photocatalysis.

Abstract:The application of the photocatalysis process in pollution control has attracted a lot of interest due to the growing seriousness of environmental water problems. Photocatalysis technology has quickly risen to the forefront of sustainable wastewater treatments thanks to rapid advances in the development of innovative photocatalysts, in which solar energy can be stored, transported, and converted into chemical form. This comprehensive report summarizes the latest progress in the design and application of semiconductor photocatalysis systems for boosted removal of environmental pollutants and enhanced photoreaction mechanisms. The current work introduces deep concepts about the electron transfer mechanism that were not discussed in previous works, supported by experimental characterizations and DFT theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the recent advances in the detoxification of wastewater pollutants and the generation of reactive species have been highlighted and reinforced by a huge amount of impactful literature. Beyond that, the degradation pathways, structure optimization, and toxicity assessment of organic pollutants have been argued using LC-MS, DFT calculation, and the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool. Intensively, the latest developments in the design and construction of heterojunction systems, like Z-scheme heterojunction, Schottky heterojunction, Type I/Type II heterojunctions, and p-n heterojunction, were described in detail. The experimental and DFT theoretical technologies confirmed that the creation of the heterojunction plays a crucial role in accelerating electron migration and upgrading the photocatalytic mechanism. On the other hand, our review discusses some common types of composite photocatalysts, like metal oxide-based photocatalysts, bismuth-based photocatalysts, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based photocatalysts. Moreover, several environmental factors that impact the photocatalytic reaction, including pH, pollutant concentration, photocatalyst loading, the effect of scavengers, and light power, are explained in detail. This summary may be helpful for readers in providing comprehensive information about photocatalysis systems and their sustainable advantages.

Abstract:Contamination of the environment has been a growing problem in recent years. Due to the rapid growth in human population, the expansion of cities, along with the development of industry, more and more dangerous chemicals end up in the environment, especially in soil and water. For the most part, it is not possible to effectively remove chemicals through traditional remediation techniques, because those used in treatment plants are not specifically designed for this purpose. Therefore, new approaches for water remediation are in great demand. Many efforts have been focused on applications of photocatalysis for the remediation of chemical pollutants including drugs. Titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles have particularly been considered as potential photocatalysts due to their favorable properties. In this article, we present the problem of emerging contaminants including drugs and discuss the use of photocatalysts based on titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles for their degradation. A wide selection of materials, starting from bare TiO2, via its hybrid and composite materials, are discussed including those based on carbonaceous materials or connections with macrocyclic structures. Examples of photodegradation experiments on TiO2-based materials including those performed with various active pharmaceutical ingredients are also included.

Abstract:<p>Photoinduced reduction and oxidation, the important processes in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation, have generated increasing interest to address the energy and environmental issues. In this review, the recent developments in bandgap and interfacial engineering for enhanced light absorption, efficient charge separation and interfacial reaction are focused toward the applications in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation. In photoinduced reduction for hydrogen evolution, three major strategies are discussed: cocatalysts, sacrificial agents and heterojunctions. In photoinduced oxidation for organic degradation, three types of emerging pollutants of current concerns are highlighted: organic dyes, pharmaceuticals and volatile organic compounds. The key challenges of promising photocatalysts are discussed for future development and practical application.</p>

The focus of this study is on understanding the fundamental principles and mechanisms that govern the collaborative action of piezoelectric and photocatalytic materials. The efficient degradation of organic pollutants in diverse environmental matrices can be achieved through the synergistic application of piezo‐catalysis and photocatalysis. The focus of this study is on understanding the fundamental principles and mechanisms that govern the collaborative action of piezoelectric and photocatalytic materials. Piezoelectric nanomaterials, under mechanical stress, generate piezo‐potential, which, when coupled with photocatalysts, enhances the generation and separation of charge carriers. The resulting cascade of redox reactions promotes the degradation of a wide spectrum of organic pollutants. The comprehensive investigation involves a variety of experimental techniques, including advanced spectroscopy and microscopy, to elucidate the intricate interplay between mechanical and photoinduced processes. The influence of key parameters, such as material composition, morphology, and external stimuli on the catalytic performance, is systematically explored. This study contributes to the increasing knowledge of environmental remediation and lays the foundation for the development of advanced technologies using piezo and photocatalysis for sustainable pollutant removal.

Abstract:This study comprehensively assesses the key photocatalytic characteristics such as reaction rate, quantum yield, space yield, energy consumption, and figure of merit of 169 nanocomposites based on 2D materials and metal oxide semiconductors. The major obstacles for creating efficient 2D‐metal oxide semiconductors are discussed using available literature data, and potential future directions are suggested. Photocatalysis plays a crucial role in tackling environmental challenges by efficiently breaking down organic pollutants in water. This study highlights the significant contribution of 2D materials in advancing photocatalytic technology for sustainable environmental remediation. It explores various aspects of photocatalytic processes, including important performance metrics such as reaction rate, quantum yield, space yield, energy consumption, and figure of merit. The main focus is on 2D materials‐based structures, such as metal oxide supported on graphene and graphene oxides, MXene, or MoS2 (referred as 2D‐MO NPs), as well as more complex nanocomposite configurations (referred as 2D‐MO NCs). Furthermore, the research examines the complex interaction between compositional and operational factors that influence photocatalytic activity, as well as different photocatalytic mechanisms and active species. Finally, it addresses the current limitations of photocatalytic organic pollutants degradation for field applications and discusses the prospects of this technology.

Abstract:As a type of emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) are widely detected in aquatic environments and attract increasing ecological concern worldwide. The mitigation strategy of MPs pollution in aquatic environments has thus become a research priority. Photocatalysis has recently received wide attention largely due to its high potential for MPs degradation. However, to gain an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of photocatalysis in MPs mitigation, we reviewed the up-to-date advancements regarding the key parameters for evaluating the photodegradation, promising photocatalysts, and key mechanisms; possible synergistic reactions were also illustrated. Especially, the modification of photocatalyst was analyzed and interpreted for improving the performance including doping metal, decorating functional group, etc. The relationship between the reactive oxygen species generation and the material structure was elucidated. Moreover, the ecological risks induced by photocatalysis were discussed. To take it a step further of today's photocatalysis in MPs degradation, future research should focus on (1) designing realistic photocatalytic materials to improve the efficiency of MPs degradation; (2) detailing the degradation mechanisms and synergistic reactions to better utilize the advantages of photocatalysis; and (3) quantitatively evaluating the ecological risks posed by the degradation intermediates and further developing recycling approaches.
