Abstract:Water-tolerant solid acid catalysts play an important role in the development of environmentally friendly new chemical reactions.The present situation and advances in development of inorganic and organic water-tolerant solid acid catalysts are reviewed.Based on the structural analysis of solid acid catalysts,factors influencing the water-tolerant property of solid acids are compared.It can be concluded that metal oxides and its composites,metal phosphates,heteropoly compounds are perspective water-tolerant solid acid catalysts on which further researches should be focused.
Enhanced H2O2 Utilization Efficiency in Fenton-like System for Degradation of Emerging Contaminants: Oxygen Vacancy-Mediated Activation of O2.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the most commonly used oxidant in advanced oxidation processes for emerging organic contaminant degradation. However, the activation of H2O2 to generate reactive oxygen species is always accompanied by O2 generation resulting in H2O2 waste. Here, we prepare a Ti doped Mn3O4/Fe3O4 ternary catalyst (Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4) to create abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), which yields electron delocalization impacts on enhancing the electrical conductivity, accelerating the activation of O2 to produce H2O2. In Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4/H2O2 system, OVs-mediated O2/O2 center dot-/H2O2 redox cycles trigger the activation of locally generated O2, boost the regeneration of O2 center dot-and on site produce H2O2 for replenishment. This leads to a 100% removal of tiamulin in 30 min at an unprecedented H2O2 utilization efficiency of 96.0%, which is 24 folds higher than that with Fe3O4/H2O2. Importantly, further integration of Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4 catalysts into membrane filtration ach-ieved high rejections of tiamulin (> 83.9%) from real surface water during a continuous 12-h operation, demonstrating broad pH adaptability, excellent catalytic stability and leaching resistance. This work demon-strates a feasible strategy for developing OVs-rich catalysts for improving H2O2 utilization efficiency via acti-vation of locally generated oxygen during the Haber-Weiss reaction.

Abstract:Nonradical oxidation in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has been extensively applied in contaminants elimination from aqueous solutions. Since nonradical oxidation was first proposed in the Gif system in 2001, high-valent ferric ions (FeⅤ+) were identified as active species. Therefore, researchers extensively exploited nonradical oxidation and have made great progress in persulfate-based nonradical activation process and nonradical mechanisms. At the same time, various catalysts are updated successively, but the summary of kinds of catalysts involved in nonradical oxidation is limited. Hence, we systematically summarized five nonradical oxidation mechanisms, and provided an elaboration on the recent development of sundry catalysts involved in nonradical oxidation in this review. The intrinsic impacts of carbon-based, metal-based materials are clarified, with emphasis on reactive oxygen species, pivotal functional groups and specific mechanism. For carbon-based catalysts, novel raw materials and special synthesis means are displayed. For latest metal-based catalysts like high-valent metal species (e.g., Fe(Ⅳ) and Mn(Ⅴ)), single-atom catalysts (SACs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we endeavored to present a critical understanding of the relationship between their structure and nonradical activation performance. Not only that, the particular mechanism of inorganics anions and organics were also illustrated in this paper. Lastly, we proposed the applications, opportunities and challenges of nonradical oxidation. Generally, this review provided a theoretical and applied research progress on nonradical oxidation and offered a comprehensive introduction for various catalysts involved in nonradical oxidation for better future research and environmental application.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy carrier for powering future transportation and other applications. Water electrolysis is a promising option for hydrogen production from renewable resources such as wind and solar energy. To date, tremendous efforts have been devoted to the development of electrocatalysts and membranes for water electrolysis technology. In principle, water electrolysis in acidic media has several advantages over that in alkaline media, including favorable reaction kinetics, easy product separation, and low operating pressure. However, acidic water electrolysis poses higher requirements for the catalysts, especially the ones for the oxygen evolution reaction. It is a grand challenge to develop highly active, durable, and cost‐effective catalysts to replace precious metal catalysts for acidic water oxidation. In this article, an overview is presented of the latest developments in design and synthesis of electrocatalysts for acidic water oxidation, emphasizing new strategies for achieving high electrocatalytic activity while maintaining excellent durability at low cost. In particular, the reaction pathways and intermediates are discussed in detail to gain deeper insight into the oxygen evolution reaction mechanism, which is vital to rational design of more efficient electrocatalysts. Further, the remaining scientific challenges and possible strategies to overcome them are outlined, together with perspectives for future‐generation electrocatalysts that exploit nanoscale materials for water electrolysis.

Abstract:Meeting the escalating demand for clean water resources is one of the key challenges to ensure a sustainable future. Catalysis plays an important role to advance the chemical reactions required for wastewater efficient remediation. How to exploit high‐performance catalysts to boost the pivotal reaction kinetics always attracts researchers' enthusiasm. Perovskite oxides as a novel class of functional materials can be tuned to confer compositional flexibilities and provide rich and unique structural properties. As the rising‐star material, it has been widely probed for electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and membrane‐catalysis for energy conversion, but received less attention in water treatment. In this review, the advances of perovskite oxides for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in water remediation are comprehensively elaborated. A fundamental understanding of the crystal structures and properties of perovskite oxides as well as the basic principles of AOPs is firstly provided. Then, emphasis is placed on how to tune the perovskite oxides to suit various AOPs. The strategies to design novel perovskite oxides to enhance the catalytic activities in AOPs have been highlighted. It is expected that after reading this review, readers will have a clearer vision of the background, the state of the art development, and general guidelines for future directions regarding research in this area.

Abstract:The rising debate on the dilemma of photocatalytic water treatment technologies has driven researchers to revisit its prospects in water decontamination. Nowadays, heterogeneous photocatalysis coupled oxidant activation techniques are intensively studied due to their dual advantages of high mineralization and high oxidation efficiency in pollutant degradation. This paved a new way for the development of solar-driven oxidation technologies. Previous reviews focused on the advances in one specific coupling technique, such as photocatalytic persulfate activation and photocatalytic ozonation, but lack a consolidated understanding of the synergy between photocatalytic oxidation and oxidant activation. The synergy involves the migration of photogenerated carriers, radical reaction, and the increase in oxidation rate and mineralization. This review systematically summarizes the fundamentals of activation mechanism, advanced characterization techniques and synergistic effects of coupling techniques for water decontamination. Besides, specific cases that lead researchers astray in revealing mechanisms and assessing synergy are critically discussed. Finally, the prospects and challenges are put forward to further deepen the research on heterogeneous photocatalytic activation of oxidants. This work provides a consolidated view of the existing heterogeneous photocatalysis coupled oxidant activation techniques and inspires researchers to develop more promising solar-driven technologies for water decontamination.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes(AOPs),as new technologies in water treatment fields,are very popular in recent years.Especially,AOPS have the advantage in the treatment of difficultly degraded organics.The research process and mechanism for water treatment by advanced oxidation processes,such as Fenton and technologies on Fenton,photochemical oxidation and photocatalysis oxidation,ozone oxidation,electrochemical oxidation,wet air oxidation and catalytic wet air oxidation,supercritical water oxidation and supercritical catalytic water oxidation,are summarized in this paper.How to produce more ·OH radicals is one of the most radical issues in AOPs.Comprehensive analysis manifests that researching the oxidants of higher cost-efficient as well as the catalysts of more catalytic activity and sustainable are the main development trend in AOPs.In addition,it is necessary that technologies which combine AOPs and sound,light,electricity,magnet and so on will further not only enhance wastewater removal but also expand its space for research in wastewater fields.

Abstract:With the ever-growing water pollution issues, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received growing attention due to their high efficiency in the removal of refractory organic pollutants. Transition metal sulfides (TMSs), with excellent optical, electrical, and catalytical performance, are of great interest as heterogeneous catalysts. These TMSs-based heterogeneous catalysts have been demonstrated to be capable and adaptable in water purification through advanced oxidation processes. The aim of this review is to conduct an exhaustive analysis and summary of recent progress in the application of TMSs-based AOPs for water decontamination. Firstly, the commonly used tuning strategies for TMSs-based catalysts are concisely introduced, including artificial size and shape control, composition control, doping, and heterostructure manufacturing. Then, a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art progress on TMSs-based AOPs (i.e., Fenton-like oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, and electrochemical oxidation processes) for wastewater treatment is discussed in detail, with an emphasis on their catalytic performance and involved mechanism. In addition, influencing factors of water chemistry, namely, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, inorganic species, and natural organic matter on the catalytic performance of established AOPs are analyzed. Furthermore, the reusability and stability of TMSs-based catalysts in these AOPs are also outlined. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives related to TMSs-based catalysts and their applications for AOPs wastewater treatment are proposed. It is expected that this review would shed some light on the future development of TMSs-based AOPs towards water purification.

Toward Selective Oxidation of Contaminants in Aqueous Systems

Abstract:The presence of diverse pollutants in water has been threating human health and aquatic ecosystems on a global scale. For more than a century, chemical oxidation using strongly oxidizing species was one of the most effective technologies to destruct pollutants and to ensure a safe and clean water supply. However, the removal of increasing amount of pollutants with higher structural complexity, especially the emerging micropollutants with trace concentrations in the complicated water matrix, requires excessive dosage of oxidant and/or energy input, resulting in a low cost-effectiveness and possible secondary pollution. Consequently, it is of practical significance but scientifically challenging to achieve selective oxidation of pollutants of interest for water decontamination. Currently, there are a variety of examples concerning selective oxidation of pollutants in aqueous systems. However, a systematic understanding of the relationship between the origin of selectivity and its applicable water treatment scenarios, as well as the rational design of catalyst for selective catalytic oxidation, is still lacking. In this critical review, we summarize the state-of-the-art selective oxidation strategies in water decontamination and probe the origins of selectivity, that is, the selectivity resulting from the reactivity of either oxidants or target pollutants, the selectivity arising from the accessibility of pollutants to oxidants via adsorption and size exclusion, as well as the selectivity due to the interfacial electron transfer process and enzymatic oxidation. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are briefly outlined to stimulate future discussion and interest on selective oxidation for water decontamination, particularly toward application in real scenarios.

Abstract:The many pollutants detected in water represent a global environmental issue. Emerging and persistent organic pollutants are particularly difficult to remove using traditional treatment methods. Electro-oxidation and sulfate-radical-based advanced oxidation processes are innovative removal methods for these contaminants. These approaches rely on the generation of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals during electro-oxidation and sulfate activation, respectively. In addition, hybrid activation, in which these methods are combined, is interesting because of the synergistic effect of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals. Hybrid activation effectiveness in pollutant removal can be influenced by various factors, particularly the materials used for the anode. This review focuses on various organic pollutants. However, it focuses more on pharmaceutical pollutants, particularly paracetamol, as this is the most frequently detected emerging pollutant. It then discusses electro-oxidation, photocatalysis and sulfate radicals, highlighting their unique advantages and their performance for water treatment. It focuses on perovskite oxides as an anode material, with a particular interest in calcium copper titanate (CCTO), due to its unique properties. The review describes different CCTO synthesis techniques, modifications, and applications for water remediation.

Abstract:Nowadays, an ever‐increasing variety of organic contaminants in water has caused hazards to the ecological environment and human health. Many of them are persistent and non‐biodegradable. Various techniques have been studied for sewage treatment, including biological, physical and chemical methods. Photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received increasing attention due to their fast reaction rates and strong oxidation capability, low cost compared with the non‐photolytic AOPs. This review is dedicated to summarizing up‐to‐date research progress in photocatalytic AOPs, such as Fenton or Fenton‐like reaction, ozonation and sulfate radical‐based advanced oxidation processes. Mechanisms and activation processes are discussed. Then, the paper summarizes photocatalytic materials and modification strategies, including defect chemistry, morphology control, heterostructure design, noble metal deposition. The future perspectives and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Sewage sludge as waste of the wastewater treatment process contains toxic substances, and its conversion into sludge biochar-based catalysts is a promising strategy that merges the merits of waste reutilization and environmental cleanup. This study aims to systematically recapitulate the published articles on the development of sludge biochar-based catalysts in different advanced oxidation processes of wastewater, including sulfate-based system, Fenton-like systems, photocatalysis, and ozonation systems. Due to abundant functional groups, metal phases and unique structures, sludge biochar-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic behavior for decontamination in advanced oxidation systems. In particular, the combination of sludge and pollutant dopants manifests a synergistic effect. The catalytic mechanisms of as-prepared catalysts in these systems are also investigated. Furthermore, initial solution pH, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and coexisting anions have a vital role in advanced oxidation processes, and these parameters are systematically summarized. In summary, this study could provide relatively comprehensive and up-to-date messages for the application of sludge biochar-based catalysts in the advanced oxidation processes of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:It has become necessary to develop effective strategies to prevent and reduce water pollution as a result of the increase in dangerous pollutants in water reservoirs. Consequently, there is a need to design new catalyst materials to promote the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the field of wastewater treatment plant to ensure the mineralization of trace organic contaminants. A notable approach gaining attention involves the coupling of sulfate radicals-based AOPs to photocatalysis or electrocatalysis processes, aiming to achieve the complete removal of refractory contaminants into water and carbon dioxide. Titanium dioxide as metal oxide has received great attention for its catalytic application in water purification. TiO2 catalysts offer a multitude of advantages in AOPs. They are characterized by their high photocatalytic activity under both ultraviolet and visible light, making them environmentally friendly due to the absence of toxic byproducts during oxidation. Their versatility is remarkable, finding utility in various AOPs, from photocatalysis to photo-Fenton processes. TiO2's durability ensures long-lasting catalytic activity, which is crucial for continuous treatment processes, and their cost-effectiveness is particularly advantageous. Furthermore, their chemical stability allows it to withstand varying pH conditions. However, the large band gap energy and low electrical conductivity hinder the catalytic reaction effectiveness. This review aims to examine various approaches to enhance the catalytic performance of titanium dioxide, with the objective of enabling more efficient water purification methods.

Abstract:This Special Issue includes manuscripts on mechanistic understanding, development, and implementation of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern in water and wastewater treatment. The main goal was successfully achieved under the joint effort of authors, anonymous reviewers, and editorial managers. Totally, one review and 15 research papers are included in the Special Issue. These are mainly focused on catalyst synthesis, reactor design, treatment performance, kinetic modeling, reaction mechanisms, and by-product formation during electrochemical, photocatalytic, plasma, persulfate, chlorine, ozone-based, and Fenton-related AOPs at different scales. This Special Issue received attention from researchers from different parts of the world such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Mexico, and the USA. The guest editors are happy to see that all papers presented are innovative and meaningful, and hope that this Special Issue can promote mechanistic understanding and engineering applications of AOPs for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern in water.

Abstract:Centralized water treatment has dominated in developed urban areas over the past century, although increasing challenges with this model demand a shift to a more decentralized approach wherein advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can be appealing treatment options. Efforts to overcome the fundamental obstacles that have thus far limited the practical use of traditional AOPs, such as reducing their chemical and energy input demands, target the utilization of heterogeneous catalysts. Specifically, recent advances in nanotechnology have stimulated extensive research investigating engineered nanomaterial (ENM) applications to AOPs. In this Perspective, we critically evaluate previously studied ENM catalysts and the next-generation treatment technologies they seek to enable. Opportunities for improvement exist at the intersection of materials science and treatment process engineering, as future research should aim to enhance catalyst properties while considering the unique roadblocks to practical ENM implementation in water treatment.

Abstract:The principles, characteristics, and application effectiveness of several unitized and industrialized advanced oxidation equipments, including advanced nanometal-catalyzed ozone oxidation machine, multidimensional electrolytic catalytic oxidation equipment, and ultraviolet-light catalyzed oxidation equipment, were introduced. The reason why domestic ultraviolet light-catalyzed oxidation technology lags behind Germany was analyzed. It is proposed that the domestic scientists should strengthen cooperation in various areas and make efforts to create worldwide leading advanced oxidation equipment to completely solve the environmental pollution problem.
