Abstract:The spin Hall effect creates a spin current in response to a charge current in a material that has strong spin-orbit coupling. The size of the spin Hall effect in many materials is disputed, requiring independent measurements of the effect. We develop a novel mechanical method to measure the size of the spin Hall effect, relying on the equivalence between spin and angular momentum. The spin current carries angular momentum, so the flow of angular momentum will result in a mechanical torque on the material. We determine the size and geometry of this torque and demonstrate that it can be measured using a nanomechanical device. Our results show that measurement of the spin Hall effect in this manner is possible and also opens possibilities for actuating nanomechanical systems with spin currents.

Abstract:The spin-dependent transport properties of paramagnetic metals are roughly invariant under rotation. By contrast, in ferromagnetic materials the magnetization breaks the rotational symmetry, and thus the spin Hall effect is expected to become anisotropic. Here, using a specific design of lateral spin valves, we measure electrically the spin Hall Effect anisotropy in NiCu and NiPd, both in their ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. We show that the appearance of the ferromagnetic order does not lead to a sizeable anisotropy of the spin charge interconversion in these materials.

Abstract:Since the prediction of the spin Hall effect more than 40 years ago, significant progress was made in theoretical description as well as in experimental observation, especially in the last decade. In this article, we present three different concepts and measurement geometries for all-electrical detection of the direct and the inverse spin Hall effect in semiconductors. Based on experiments with n-and p-doped GaAs microstructures, we describe our experimental approaches and methods to experimentally identify the spin Hall effect and compare our results to previous experiments and theoretical considerations. Direct Electrical Detection of Spin Chemical Potential Due to Spin Hall Effect in $β$-Tungsten and Platinum Using a Pair of Ferromagnetic and Normal Metal Voltage probes

Abstract:The phenomenon of Spin Hall Effect (SHE) generates a pure spin current transverse to an applied current in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, although not detectable through conventional electrical measurement. An intuitive Hall effect like measurement configuration is implemented to directly measure pure spin chemical potential of the accumulated spins at the edges of heavy metal (HM) channels that generates large SHE. A pair of transverse linearly aligned voltage probes in placed in ohmic contact with the top surface of HM , one being a ferromagnetic metal (FM) with non-zero spin polarization and other is the reference metal (RM) with zero polarization of carriers. This combination of FM/RM electrodes is shown to induce an additional voltage proportional to a spin accumulation potential, which is anti symmetric with respect to opposite orientations of FM controlled by a 2D vector magnet. Proof of concept of the measurement scheme is verified by comparing the signs of voltages for HM channels of Tungsten (W) and Platinum (Pt) which are known to generate opposite spin accumulation under similar conditions of applied current. The same devices are also able to detect the reciprocal effect, inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) by swapping the current and voltage leads and the results are consistent with reciprocity principle. Further, exploiting a characteristic feature of W thin film deposition, a series of devices were fabricated with W resistivity varying over a wide range of 10 - 750 $\mu \Omega$-cm and the calculated spin Hall resistivity exhibits a pronounced power law dependence on resistivity. Our measurement scheme combined with almost two decades of HM resistivity variation provides the ideal platform required to test the underlying microscopic mechanism responsible for SHE/ISHE.

Abstract:The understanding of spin dynamics in laterally confined structures on sub-micron length scales has become a significant aspect of the development of novel magnetic storage technologies. Numerous ferromagnetic resonance measurements, optical characterization by Kerr microscopy and Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and x-ray studies were carried out to detect the dynamics in patterned magnetic antidot lattices. Here, we investigate Oersted-field driven spin dynamics in rectangular Ni80Fe20/Pt antidot lattices with different lattice parameters by electrical means and compare them to micromagnetic simulations. When the system is driven to resonance, a dc voltage across the length of the sample is detected that changes its sign upon field reversal, which is in agreement with a rectification mechanism based on the inverse spin Hall effect. Furthermore, we show that the voltage output scales linearly with the applied microwave drive in the investigated range of powers. Our findings have direct implications on the development of engineered magnonics applications and devices.

Abstract:We report on measurements of direct spin Hall effect in a lightly n-doped GaAs channel. As spin detecting contacts we employed highly efficient ferromagnetic Fe/(Ga,Mn)As/GaAs Esaki diode structures. We investigate bias and temperature dependence of the measured spin Hall signal and evaluate the value of total spin Hall conductivity and its dependence on channel conductivity and temperature. From the results we determine skew scattering and side jump contribution to the total spin hall conductivity and compare it with the results of experiments on higher conductive n-GaAs channels[Phys. Rev. Lett. 105,156602(2010)]. As a result we conclude that both skewness and side jump contribution cannot be fully independent on the conductivity of the channel.

Abstract:Hall effects have been employed as sensitive detectors of magnetic fields and magnetizations. In spintronics, exotic phenomena often emerge from a non-equilibrium spin polarization or magnetization, that is very difficult to measure directly. The challenge is due to the tiny total moment, which is out of reach of superconducting quantum interference devices and vibrating sample magnetometers or spectroscopic methods such as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Kerr effect is sufficiently sensitive only in direct gap semiconductors, in which the Kerr angle can be resonantly enhanced. Here we demonstrate that even one excess spin in a million can be detected by a Hall effect at room temperature. The novel Hall effect is not governed by the spin Hall conductivity but by its energy derivative thereby related to the spin Nernst effect.

Abstract:The electrical injection of spin polarized electrons in a semiconductor can be achieved in principle by driving a current from a ferromagnetic metal, where current is known to be significantly spin polarized, into the semiconductor via ohmic conduction. For detection a second ferromagnet can be used as drain. We studied submicron lateral spin valve junctions, based on high mobility InAs/AlSb two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), with Ni, Co and Permalloy as ferromagnetic electrodes. In the standard geometry it is very difficult to separate true spin injection from other effects, including local Hall effect, anomalous magnetoresistance (AMR) contribution from the ferromagnetic electrodes and weak localization/anti-localization corrections, which can closely mimic the signal expected from spin valve effect. The reduction in size, and the use of a multiterminal non-local geometry allowed us to reduce the unwanted effects to a minimum. Despite all our efforts, we have not been able to observe spin injection. However, we find that this 'negative' result in these systems is actually consistent with theoretical predictions for spin transport in diffusive systems.
Comprehensive Demonstration of Spin-Hall Hanle Effects in Epitaxial Pt Thin Films

Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinear Hall effect due to the boundary spin accumulation in Pt films grown on Al2O3 substrates. This Hall effect and the previously demonstrated Hanle magnetoresistance provide a complete picture of the spin-precession control of the spin and charge transport at the boundary of a spin-orbit coupled material, which we refer to as spin-Hall Hanle effects (SHHE). We also show that the SHHE can be employed to measure the spin diffusion length, the spin-Hall angle, and the spin relaxation time of heavy metal without the need of magnetic interface or the input from other measurements. The comprehensive demonstration of SHHE in such a simple system suggests they may be ubiquitous and needs to be considered for unravelling the spin and charge transport in more complex thin film structures of spin-orbit coupled materials.

Direct Observation of Spin Current Oscillation in a Ferromagnet

Abstract:Spin current is a crucial element in spintronics, and its diffusion in materials is typically characterized by monotonic decay. However, when the material hosting the spin current is also a magnet, the spin current is expected to exhibit spatial oscillations, the observation of which remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate the spatial oscillation of a spin current in a nickel film by measuring the thickness-dependent inverse spin Hall effect in Ni/YIG bilayers. The inverse spin Hall current in nickel is found to oscillate with its film thickness, in contrast to nonmagnetic materials, and that the oscillation period quantitatively agrees with theoretical predictions based on differences in the Fermi wave vector between majority and minority carriers. Abstract:Efficient detection of spin-charge conversion is crucial for advancing our understanding of emergent phenomena in spin-orbit-coupled nanostructures. Here, we provide proof of principle of an electrical detection scheme of spin-charge conversion that enables full disentanglement of competing spin-orbit coupling transport phenomena in diffusive lateral channels i.e. the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) and the spin galvanic effect (SGE). A suitable detection geometry in an applied oblique magnetic field is shown to provide direct access to spin-charge transport coefficients through a simple symmetry analysis of the output non-local resistance. The scheme is robust against tilting of the spin-injector magnetization, disorder and spurious non-spin related contributions to the non-local signal, and can be used to probe spin-charge conversion effects in both spin-valve and hybrid optospintronic devices.

Abstract:Spin Hall effects interconvert spin- and charge currents due to spin-orbit interaction, which enables convenient electrical generation and detection of diffusive spin currents and even collective spin excitations in magnetic solids. Here, we review recent experimental efforts exploring efficient spin Hall detector materials as well as new approaches to drive collective magnetization dynamics and to manipulate spin textures by spin Hall effects. These studies are also expected to impact practical spintronics applications beyond their significance in fundamental research.

Abstract:Spin Hall effects intermix spin and charge currents even in nonmagnetic materials and, therefore, ultimately may allow the use of spin transport without the need for ferromagnets. We show how spin Hall effects can be quantified by integrating permalloy/normal metal (N) bilayers into a coplanar waveguide. A dc spin current in N can be generated by spin pumping in a controllable way by ferromagnetic resonance. The transverse dc voltage detected along the permalloy/N has contributions from both the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and the spin Hall effect, which can be distinguished by their symmetries. We developed a theory that accounts for both. In this way, we determine the spin Hall angle quantitatively for Pt, Au and Mo. This approach can readily be adapted to any conducting material with even very small spin Hall angles.

Detection of spin pumping free of rectification and thermal artefacts in molecular-based ferromagnetic insulator V[TCNE]x~2

Abstract:The molecular-based ferrimagnetic insulator V(TCNE)x has gained recent interest for efficient spin-wave excitation due to its low Gilbert damping ratio a=4E-5, and narrow ferromagnetic resonance linewidth f=1Oe. Here we report a clean spin pumping signal detected on V(TCNE)x/metal bilayer structures, free from spin rectification or thermal artifacts. On-chip coupling of microwave power is achieved via a coplanar waveguide to measure the in-plane angle-dependence of the inverse spin-Hall effect under ferromagnetic resonance conditions with respect to a constant external magnetic field. A signature of pure spin current from V(TCNE)x is observed in both platinum and permalloy metal layers, demonstrating the utility of V(TCNE)x for magnon spintronics studies in molecule/solid-state heterostructures.

Abstract:The inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) has been observed only in nonmagnetic metals, such as Pt and Au, with a strong spin-orbit coupling. We report the observation of ISHE in a ferromagnetic permalloy (Py) on ferromagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG). Through controlling the spin current injection by altering the Py-YIG interface, we have isolated the spin current contribution and demonstrated the ISHE in a ferromagnetic metal, the reciprocal phenomenon of the anomalous Hall effect. A large spin Hall angle in Py, determined from Py thin films of different thicknesses, indicates many other ferromagnetic metals may be exploited as superior pure spin current detectors and for applications in spin current.
Spin Hall Effect Induced Spin Transfer Through an Insulator

Abstract:When charge current passes through a normal metal that exhibits spin Hall effect, spin accumulates at the edge of the sample in the transverse direction. We predict that this spin accumulation, or spin voltage, enables quantum tunneling of spin through an insulator or vacuum to reach a ferromagnet without transferring charge. In a normal metal/insulator/ferromagnetic insulator trilayer (such as Pt/oxide/YIG), the quantum tunneling explains the spin-transfer torque and spin pumping that exponentially decay with the thickness of the insulator. In a normal metal/insulator/ferromagnetic metal trilayer (such as Pt/oxide/Co), the spin transfer in general does not decay monotonically with the thickness of the insulator. Combining with the spin Hall magnetoresistance, this tunneling mechanism points to the possibility of a new type of tunneling spectroscopy that can probe the magnon density of states of a ferromagnetic insulator in an all-electrical and noninvasive manner.

Abstract:We investigate angular dependent spin-orbit torques from the spin Hall effect in a metallic antiferromagnet using the spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance technique. The large spin Hall effect exists in PtMn, a prototypical CuAu-I-type metallic antiferromagnet. By applying epitaxial growth, we previously reported an appreciable difference in spin-orbit torques for c- and a-axis orientated samples, implying anisotropic effects in magnetically ordered materials. In this work we demonstrate through bipolar-magnetic-field experiments a small but noticeable asymmetric behavior in the spin-transfer-torque that appears as a hysteresis effect. We also suggest that metallic antiferromagnets may be good candidates for the investigation of various unidirectional effects related to novel spin-orbitronics phenomena.
The spin Hall effect in a quantum gas

Abstract:Electronic properties like current flow are generally independent of the electron's spin angular momentum, an internal degree of freedom present in quantum particles. The spin Hall effects (SHEs), first proposed 40 years ago, are an unusual class of phenomena where flowing particles experience orthogonally directed spin-dependent Lorentz-like forces, analogous to the conventional Lorentz force for the Hall effect, but opposite in sign for two spin states. Such spin Hall effects have been observed for electrons flowing in spin-orbit coupled materials such as GaAs or InGaAs and for laser light traversing dielectric junctions. Here we observe the spin Hall effect in a quantum-degenerate Bose gas, and use the resulting spin-dependent Lorentz forces to realize a cold-atom spin transistor. By engineering a spatially inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling field for our quantum gas, we explicitly introduce and measure the requisite spin-dependent Lorentz forces, in excellent agreement with our calculations. This atomtronic circuit element behaves as a new type of velocity-insensitive adiabatic spin-selector, with potential application in devices such as magnetic or inertial sensors. In addition, such techniques --- for both creating and measuring the SHE --- are clear prerequisites for engineering topological insulators and detecting their associated quantized spin Hall effects in quantum gases. As implemented, our system realized a laser-actuated analog to the Datta-Das spin transistor.
