Metabolic responses to controlled frequency breathing in competitive swimmers

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to compare the blood lactate accumulation and other metabolic responses by trained swimmers with varying degrees of controlled frequency breathing (CFB). Fourteen (eight males, six females) trained collegiate swimmers performed peak and submaximal tethered swim tests during which breathing was restricted to one breath every two (BR2), four (BR4), six (BR6) (N = 13), and eight (BR8) (N = 9) strokes. All submaximal swim tests were of 4-min duration, with tethered swim resistance at a constant 80% of peak resistance. Measures included oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), tidal volume (TV), ventilation (VE), estimated alveolar partial pressure of O2 (PAO2) and CO2 (PACO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), stroke rate (SR), heart rate (HR), and change in blood lactates (delta LA). Significant differences were associated with increases in CFB for all variables except HR and delta LA. Although CFB was associated with reduced VE, compensatory adaptations resulted in increases in TV, PACO2, and SR and decreases in PAO2 and RER. VCO2 was greater for BR2 than all others, and VO2 for BR2 was greater than BR8. The results indicate that CFB does not affect blood lactate accumulation but does enhance oxygen extraction. CFB may impede proper stroke mechanics.
The Effect of Breathing Patterns Common to Competitive Swimming on Gas Exchange and Muscle Deoxygenation During Heavy-Intensity Fartlek Exercise

Abstract:During competitive freestyle swimming, the change of direction requires a turn followed by ∼15 m of underwater kicking at various intensities that require a ∼5 s breath-hold (BH). Upon surfacing, breathing must be regulated, as head rotation is necessary to facilitate the breath while completing the length of the pool (∼25 s). This study compared the respiratory and muscle deoxygenation responses of regulated breathing vs. free breathing, during these 25-5 s cycles. It was hypothesized that with the addition of a BH and sprint during heavy-intensity (HVY) exercise, oxygen uptake (VO2) and oxygen saturation (SatO2) would decrease, and muscle deoxygenation ([HHb]) and total hemoglobin ([Hbtot]) would increase. Ten healthy male participants (24 ± 3 years) performed 4-6 min trials of HVY cycling in the following conditions: (1) continuous free breathing (CONLD); (2) continuous with 5 s BH every 25 s (CONLD-BH); (3) Fartlek (FLK), a 5 s sprint followed by 25 s of HVY; and (4) a combined Fartlek and BH (FLK-BH). Continuous collection of VO2 and SatO2, [Hbtot], and [HHb] via breath-by-breath gas analysis and near-infrared spectroscopy (normalized to baseline) was performed. Breathing frequency and tidal volumes were matched between CONLD and CONLD-BH and between FLK and FLK-BH. As a result, VO2 was unchanged between CONLD (2.12 ± 0.35 L/min) and CONLD-BH (2.15 ± 0.42 L/min; p = 0.116) and between FLK (2.24 ± 0.40 L/min) and FLK-BH (2.20 ± 0.45 L/min; p = 0.861). SatO2 was higher in CONLD (63 ± 1.9%) than CONLD-BH (59 ± 3.3%; p < 0.001), but was unchanged between FLK (61 ± 2.2%) and FLK-BH (62 ± 3.1%; p = 0.462). Δ[Hbtot] is higher in CONLD (3.3 ± 1.6 μM) than CONLD-BH (-2.5 ± 1.2 μM; Δ177%; p < 0.001), but was unchanged between FLK (2.0 ± 1.6 μM) and FLK-BH (0.82 ± 1.4 μM; p = 0.979). Δ[HHb] was higher in CONLD (7.3 ± 1.8μM) than CONLD-BH (7.0 ± 2.0μM; Δ4%; p = 0.011) and lower in FLK (6.7 ± 1.8μM) compared to FLK-BH (8.7 ± 2.4 μM; p < 0.001). It is suggested that the unchanged VO2 between CONLD and CONLD-BH was supported by increased deoxygenation as reflected by decreased Δ[Hbtot] and blunted Δ[HHb], via apneic-driven redistribution of blood flow away from working muscles, which was reflected by the decreased SatO2. However, the preserved VO2 during FLK-BH vs. FLK has been underpinned by an increase in [HHb].

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine whether the breathing action in front crawl (FC) sprint swimming affects the ipsilateral upper limb kinematics relative to a non-breathing stroke cycle (SC). Ten male competitive swimmers performed two 25m FC sprints: one breathing to their preferred side (Br) and one not breathing (NBr). Both swim trials were performed through a 6.75m(3) calibrated space and recorded by six gen-locked JVC KY32 CCD cameras. A paired t-test was used to assess statistical differences between the trials, with a confidence level of p<0.05 accepted as significant. Swimmers were slower (3%) when breathing. Within the entry phase, swimmers had a slower COM horizontal velocity (3.3%), less shoulder flexion (8%), abduction (33%) and roll (4%) when breathing. The pull phase was longer in duration (14%) swimmers had a shallower hand path (11%), less shoulder abduction (11%), a slower hand vertical acceleration (30%) and slower centre of mass (COM) horizontal velocity (3%) when breathing. In the push phase, swimmers had a smaller elbow range of motion (ROM) (38%), faster backwards hand speed (25%) and faster hand vertical acceleration (33%) when breathing. Swimmers rolled their shoulders more (12%) in the recovery phase when breathing. This study confirms that swim performance is compromised by the inclusion of taking a breath in sprint FC swimming. It was proposed that swimmers aim to orient their ipsilateral shoulder into a stronger position by stretching and rolling the shoulders more in the entry phase whilst preparing to take a breath. Swimmers should focus on lengthening the push phase by extending the elbow more and not accelerating the hand too quickly upwards when preparing to inhale.

Abstract:Low-temperature oxygenation of {Cu[P(imiPr2)3]CH3CN}CF3SO3 affords a μ-η2:η2-peroxo adduct. Upon warming a dilute solution (<10-3 M) of the peroxide complex, intramolecular hydroxylation occurs at the tertiary carbon atom of one of the isopropyl groups of the ligand, reminiscent of the one catalyzed by the copper enzyme dopamine β-monooxygenase.
Maximal oxygen uptake and cardiorespiratory response to maximal 400-m free swimming, running and cycling tests in competitive swimmers

Abstract:Background: This study compared the cardiorespiratory response of trained swimmers to 400-m unimpeded front crawl swimming (SW), treadmill running (TR) and ergometer cycling (EC) maximal exercise tests, and evaluated the validity and specificity of a method to measure maximal aerobic power in swimming. Methods: Two series of experiments were conducted. In series A (n=15), comparisons were made between VO2peak and other cardiorespiratory variables in three maximal tests: after 400-m SW, and during incremental TR and EC. In series B, VO2 peak and related variables were measured after SW and during EC (n=33). Results: No significant differences were observed between VO2peak and VE in the three modes of exercise, although SW values tended to be higher. After SW, maximal ventilatory response was characterized by higher tidal volumes (VT) and lower respiratory rates (fR) as compared with TR and EC. The highest heart rate values (fH) were also observed in TR, followed by EC and SW. In series B, no significant differences were observed either in peak VO2 or VE, but fH was also lower in SW. Conclusions: A maximal 400-m unimpeded freestyle SW test yields essentially equal or nonsignificantly higher peak VO2 and VE values than during maximal TR or EC tests in trained swimmers. The specific maximal cardiorespiratory response to the SW test is characterized by higher VT, lower fR, and lower fH. Breath-by-breath measurements during the immediate recovery after a 400-m voluntary maximal swim is proposed as a valid and specific test for directly measuring maximal metabolic parameters and evaluating specific maximal aerobic power in swimming.
Body Composition Relationship to Performance, Cardiorespiratory Profile, and Tether Force in Youth Trained Swimmers

Abstract:This study sought to analyze the relationship between regional body composition, swimming performance, and aerobic and force profile determined through tethered swimming in well-trained swimmers. Eleven male and five female swimmers were involved in the study and underwent the following evaluations: (1) body composition, assessed by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry method (DXA); (2) swimming performance, determined for 200, 400, 800, and 1.500 m front-crawl swimming; (3) a tethered swimming force test to determine maximum and mean force (Fmax and Fmean); and (4) an incremental tethered swimming test for the aerobic profile determination of the swimmers. Oxygen uptake (VO2) was directly measured by an automatic and portable system (K4b2 Cosmed, Italy). The fat-free mass (lean mass + bone mineral content, LM+BMC) in lower and upper limbs (UL_LM+BMC: 6.74 ± 1.57 kg and LL_LM+BMC: 20.15 ± 3.84 kg) positively correlated with all indexes of aerobic conditioning level, showing higher coefficients to the indexes representing the ability to perform at high aerobic intensities (VO2max: 49.2 ± 5.9 mL·kg-1·min-1 and respiratory compensation point (RCP): 43.8 ± 6.0 mL·kg-1·min-1), which attained 0.82 and 0.81 (with VO2max), 0.81 and 0.80 (with RCP). The S200 (1.48 ± 0.13 m·s-1) was significantly correlated to Trunk_LM+BMC (r = 0.74), UL_LM+BMC (r = 0.72), Total_LM+BMC (r = 0.71), and LL_LM+BMC (r = 0.64). This study highlights that regional body composition plays an important role in swimming, and body segment analysis should be considered instead of the total body. Tethered swimming may represent a useful method for force and aerobic assessment, aiming at training control and performance enhancement.
Acute Effects of a Practical Blood Flow Restriction Device During Swimming Exercise

Abstract:Purpose: The present study aimed to analyze: 1) the reliability of the tissue saturation index (TSI) and ratings of perceived discomfort (RPD) responses wearing a neoprene practical cuff (PrC), comparing with the responses from traditional (TrC) pneumatic cuffs (study I); 2) the effects of PrC on metabolic (blood lactate concentration, BLC), perceptual (rate of perceived effort, RPE) and kinematic responses at sub-maximal swimming velocities (study II). Methods: Study I; 1) PrC test-retest at rest and during swimming ergometer exercise; 2) BFR at rest with TrC inflated to different percentages of the minimum arterial occlusion pressure (MAOP; 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140%). Test-retest reliability of TSI and RPD was assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and comparisons among conditions were analyzed by one-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Study II; 1) 50, 200 and 400 m swimming performances; 2) sub-maximal incremental swimming protocol with and without PrC. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare all variables during sub-maximal velocities. Results: TSI (ICC = 0.81; 95%CI 0.62-0.91) and RPD (ICC = 0.97; 95%CI 0.94-0.99) were reliable under restricted exercise using PrC. TSI during restricted exercise was lower (p <.001) compared to unrestricted exercise (6.8 ± 6.1% vs. 21.6 ± 8.2% of physiological normalization). PrC showed higher BLC only at or above 91% of critical velocity (p < .03), while stroke rate and RPE were higher (p < .005), and stroke length was lower (p < .03) during all swimming velocities. Conclusion: This easy-to-handle and affordable practical BFR device increased physiological stress at sub-maximal efforts which could be an additional training tool for swimmers.
Does Cold-Water Endurance Swimming Affect Pulmonary Function in Healthy Adults?

Abstract:The acute effects of cold-water endurance swimming on the respiratory system have received little attention. We investigated pulmonary responses to cold-water endurance swimming in healthy recreational triathletes. Pulmonary function, alveolar diffusing capacity (DLCO), fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) and arterial oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2) were assessed in 19 healthy adults one hour before and 2.5 h after a cold-water (mean ± SD, 10 ± 0.9 °C) swim trial (62 ± 27 min). In addition, 12 out of the 19 participants measured pulmonary function, forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) 3, 10, 20 and 45 min post-swim by maximal expiratory flow volume loops and DLCO by the single breath technique. FVC and FEV1 were significantly reduced 3 min post-swim (p = 0.02) (p = 0.04), respectively, and five of 12 participants (42%) experienced exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), defined as a ≥ 10% drop in FEV1. No significant changes were observed in pulmonary function 2.5 h post-swim. However, mean FENO and DLCO were significantly reduced by 7.1% and 8.1% (p = 0.01) and (p < 0.001), respectively, 2.5 h post-swim, accompanied by a 2.5% drop (p < 0.001) in SpO2. The absolute change in DLCO correlated significantly with the absolute decline in core temperature (r = 0.52; p = 0.02). Conclusion: Cold-water endurance swimming may affect the lungs in healthy recreational triathletes lasting up to 2.5 h post-swim. Some individuals appear to be more susceptible to pulmonary impairments than others, although these mechanisms need to be studied further.
Effect of high-intensity hypoxic training on sea-level swimming performances

Abstract:The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that high-intensity hypoxic training improves sea-level performances more than equivalent training in normoxia. Sixteen well-trained collegiate and Masters swimmers (10 women, 6 men) completed a 5-wk training program, consisting of three high-intensity training sessions in a flume and supplemental low- or moderate-intensity sessions in a pool each week. Subjects were matched for gender, performance level, and training history, and they were assigned to either hypoxic [Hypo; inspired O2 fraction (Fi(O(2))) = 15.3%, equivalent to a simulated altitude of 2,500 m] or normoxic (Norm; Fi(O(2)) = 20.9%) interval training in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. All pool training occurred under Norm conditions. The primary performance measures were 100- and 400-m freestyle time trials. Laboratory outcomes included maximal O(2) uptake (Vo(2 max)), anaerobic capacity (accumulated O(2) deficit), and swimming economy. Significant (P = 0.02 and <0.001 for 100- and 400-m trials, respectively) improvements were found in performance on both the 100- [Norm: -0.7 s (95% confidence limits: +0.2 to -1.7 s), -1.2%; Hypo: -0.8 s (95% confidence limits: -0.1 to -1.5 s), -1.1%] and 400-m freestyle [Norm: -3.6 s (-1.8 to -5.5 s), -1.2%; Hypo: -5.3 s (-2.3 to -8.3 s), -1.7%]. There was no significant difference between groups for either distance (ANOVA interaction, P = 0.91 and 0.36 for 100- and 400-m trials, respectively). Vo(2 max) was improved significantly (Norm: 0.16 +/- 0.23 l/min, 6.4 +/-8.1%; Hypo: 0.11 +/- 0.18 l/min, 4.2 +/- 7.0%). There was no significant difference between groups (P = 0.58). We conclude that 5 wk of high-intensity training in a flume improves sea-level swimming performances and Vo(2 max) in well-trained swimmers, with no additive effect of hypoxic training.
Effect of Tethered Swimming as Postactivation Potentiation on Swimming Performance and Technical, Hemophysiological, and Psychophysiological Variables in Adolescent Swimmers

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate whether tethered swimming (TS) performed 8 minutes before a 50-m freestyle swimming sprint could be an effective postactivation potentiation method to improve performance in young swimmers. Methods: Fourteen regional-level male adolescent swimmers (age 13.0 [2.0] y; height 161.1 [12.4] cm; body mass 52.5 [9.5] kg) underwent 2 trial conditions in a randomized and counterbalanced order (1 experimental [TS], 1 control) on different days. During the experimental session, the participants performed a standard warm-up of 1200 m followed by a TS exercise, which consisted of 3 × 10-second maximal efforts of TS with 1-minute rests between bouts. In the control condition, the warm-up phase was immediately followed by 200 m at a moderate pace (same duration as the TS in the experimental session). Performance (time trial); biomechanical (stroke length), physiological (blood lactate concentrations), and psychophysiological (ratings of perceived exertion) variables; and countermovement-jump (CMJ) flight time were collected. Results: TS warm-up had no significant effect on 50-m swimming performance (P = .27), postexercise ratings of perceived exertion, stroke length, or CMJ flight time (P ≥ .05). Blood lactate concentrations significantly increased at the end of the warm-up in the TS condition only (interaction effect: F1.91,29.91 = 4.91, P = .01, η2 = .27) and after the 50-m trial in both conditions (F1.57,20.41 = 62.39, P = .001, η2 = .82). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that 3 × 10-second TS exercises performed 8 minutes prior to the event did not affect ratings of perceived exertion, stroke length, or CMJ flight time. In addition, tethered swimming did not affect 50-m freestyle sprint performance in young swimmers.
Physiological resolution of periodic breath holding during heavy-intensity Fartlek exercise

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose was to compare the singular and combined effects of 5 s breath holds (BH) and 5 s sprints, every 30 s, during continuous high-intensity exercise, on ventilation ([Formula: see text]), oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]O2) and associated kinetics (τ), carbon dioxide production ([Formula: see text]CO2), and arterialized-capillary lactate concentration ([La-]). Methods: Ten men (24 ± 3 years) performed 4-6 min ergometer protocols that included a step-transition from 20 W to a power output of 50% of the difference between lactate threshold and [Formula: see text]O2 peak (Δ50%) including: (1) a continuous protocol (CONT) with free breathing, (2) an intermittent BH protocol (CONT-BH); repeated cycles of 5 s BH: 25 s free breathing, (3) a Fartlek protocol (Fartlek); repeated 5 s at peak aerobic power output: 25 s at Δ50%; (4) combining the 5 s Fartlek and CONT-BH protocol (Fartlek-BH). Breath-by-breath gas exchange, measured by mass spectrometry and turbine, was recorded. Results: [Formula: see text] E (L min-1) was greater (p < 0.05) than CONT (90 ± 7) in all conditions CONT-BH (98 ± 16), Fartlek (105 ± 10), and Fartlek-BH (101 ± 19). [Formula: see text]O2 and [Formula: see text]CO2 (L min-1) were unchanged in CONT-BH (2.73 ± 0.14 and 3.16 ± 0.38) and greater in Fartlek (2.85 ± 0.12 and 3.43 ± 0.16), compared to CONT (2.71 ± 0.12 and 3.12 ± 0.13). Whereas, [Formula: see text]CO2 during Fartlek-BH was higher (3.28 ± 0.35) and [Formula: see text]O2 was unchanged (2.73 ± 0.14). Fartlek-BH resulted in slower [Formula: see text]O2 kinetics (62.2 ± 19 s) and greater blood lactate concentrations (11.5 ± 2.7 mM), compared to CONT (48.8 ± 12 s; 9.0 ± 2.3 mM, respectively). Conclusions: It was demonstrated that the CONT-BH resulted in increased ventilation that sustained [Formula: see text]O2. However, [Formula: see text]O2 was restricted when an additional work was combined with the BH condition.

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of normal breath and apnea swimming on acid-base balance, physiological responses and performance during high-intensity interval training in swimming. Methods: Sixteen swimmers completed 6×50 m intervals of freestyle swimming with normal breath and apnea at maximum intensity, with 1 minute rest. Capillary blood gases (pH, PCO<inf>2</inf>, PO<inf>2</inf>, HCO<inf>3</inf>, Hct, Hb) were collected at four (4) measurement time points: 1) at rest once; 2) at rest just after the 3rd repetition; 3) at finish; and 4) at 10 min of recovery. Heart rate (HR) during swimming, lactate acid (La) concentration and swimming time (t<inf>50</inf>) were measured. Results: Our study showed uncompensated metabolic acidosis due to increased lactic acidosis in both breathing conditions, more pronounced in apnea, and faster swimming times in apnea without different heart rate responses. Conclusions: Apnea during repetitive high intensity long distance interval 50 m freestyle swimming causes uncompensated metabolic acidosis but improves sprint performance.
Comparison of cardiopulmonary responses to two types of dry-land upper-body exercise testing modes in competitive swimmers

Abstract:In this study we compared cardiopulmonary responses to upper-body exercise in 12 swimmers, using simulation of the front-crawl arm-pulling action on a computer-interfaced isokinetic swim bench and arm cranking on a modified cycle ergometer. Subjects adopted a prone posture; exercise was initially set at 20 W and subsequently increased by 10 W. min(-1). The tests were performed in a randomised order at the same time of day, within 72 h. The highest (peak) oxygen consumption (VO(2peak)), heart rate (HR(peak)), blood lactate ([la(-)](peak)) and exercise intensity (EI(peak)) were recorded at exhaustion. Mean (SEM) peak responses to simulated swimming were higher than those to arm cranking for VO(2peak) [2.9 (0.2) vs 2.4 (0.1) l x min(-1); P = 0.01], HR(peak) [174 (2) vs 161 (2) beats x min(-1); P = 0.03], and EI(peak) [122 (6) vs 102 (5) W; P = 0.02]. However, there were no significant differences in [la(-)](peak) [9.6 (0.6) vs 8.2 (0.6) mmol x l(-1); P = 0.08]. Thus simulated swimming is the preferred form of dry-land ergometry for the assessment of swimmers.

Abstract:Purpose: Current evidence posits a strong correlation between respiratory muscle function and swimming performance. Despite this, few studies have explored the integration of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) into standard swimming training regimens, which remains an unexplored avenue for improving performance in swimmers. This study aims to evaluate the potential advantages of IMT for enhancing respiratory function and swimming performance and determine whether such training could induce beneficial physiological adaptations. Methods: We designed and conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 43 swimming specialization students aged 18-25 years. Participants were randomly allocated to two groups: a control group, which followed regular swimming training, and an experimental group, which complemented the standard training with IMT. The intervention lasted for six weeks. Key outcomes measured included swimming performance metrics (time of 50 m freestyle, number of breaths in 50 m freestyle, distance before first breath in freestyle, time of 100 m freestyle) and various inspiratory muscle function parameters such as vital capacity (VC), maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximum inspiratory flow (MIF), and maximum inspiratory capacity (MIC). We also assessed certain biochemical parameters, including hemoglobin, creatine kinase (CK), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), testosterone, and cortisol concentrations. Results: Following the training period, the experimental group exhibited significant improvements in swimming performance and respiratory function parameters. We also noted an increase in hemoglobin levels and a reduction in testosterone concentrations in this group, suggesting beneficial physiological adaptations in response to the combined IMT and swimming training. Conclusion: Our findings underline the potential of IMT as a supplementary training modality for enhancing respiratory function and improving swimming performance. The changes in biochemical parameters suggest physiological adaptations that might contribute to these observed improvements. This study opens the door for future research on the benefits of integrating IMT into training regimens for competitive swimmers. Further investigation is warranted to fully elucidate the mechanisms behind the observed benefits and to validate these findings in a larger cohort and other athlete populations.
Physiological Responses and Swimming Technique During Upper Limb Critical Stroke Rate Training in Competitive Swimmers

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this study was to examine how arm stroke swimming with critical stroke rate (CSR) control would influence physiological responses and stroke variables in an effort to identify a new swimming training method. Seven well-trained male competitive swimmers (19.9 ± 1.4 years of age) performed maximal 200 and 400 m front crawl swims to determine the CSR and critical swimming velocity (CV), respectively. Thereafter, they were instructed to perform tests with 4 × 400 m swimming bouts at the CSR and CV. The swimming time (CSR test: 278.96 ± 2.70 to 280.87 ± 2.57 s, CV test: 276.17 ± 3.36 to 277.06 ± 3.64 s), heart rate, and rated perceived exertion did not differ significantly between tests for all bouts. Blood lactate concentration after the fourth bout was significantly lower in the CSR test than in the CV test (3.16 ± 1.43 vs. 3.77 ± 1.52 mmol/l, p < 0.05). The stroke rate and stroke length remained stable across bouts in the CSR test, whereas the stroke rate increased with decreased stroke length across bouts in the CV test (p < 0.05). There were significant differences in the stroke rate (39.27 ± 1.22 vs. 41.47 ± 1.22 cycles/min, p < 0.05) and stroke length (2.20 ± 0.07 vs. 2.10 ± 0.04 m/stroke, p < 0.05) between the CSR and CV tests in the fourth bout. These results indicate that the CSR could provide the optimal intensity for improving aerobic capacity during arm stroke swimming, and it may also help stabilize stroke technique.

Acute Effects of Breath-Hold Conditions on Aerobic Fitness in Elite Rugby Players

Abstract:The effects of face immersion and concurrent exercise on the diving reflex evoked by breath-hold (BH) differ, yet little is known about the combined effects of different BH conditions on aerobic fitness in elite athletes. This study aimed to assess the acute effects of various BH conditions on 18 male elite rugby players (age: 23.5 ± 1.8 years; height: 183.3 ± 3.4 cm; body mass: 84.8 ± 8.5 kg) and identify the BH condition eliciting the greatest aerobic fitness activation. Participants underwent five warm-up conditions: baseline regular breathing, dynamic dry BH (DD), static dry BH (SD), wet dynamic BH (WD), and wet static BH (WS). Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in red blood cells (RBCs), red blood cell volume (RGB), and hematocrit (HCT) pre- and post-warm-up. Peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and relative oxygen uptake (VO2/kgpeak) varied significantly across conditions, with BH groups showing notably higher values than the regular breathing group (p < 0.05). Interaction effects of facial immersion and movement conditions were significant for VO2peak, VO2/kgpeak, and the cardiopulmonary optimal point (p < 0.05). Specifically, VO2peak and peak stroke volume (SVpeak) were significantly higher in the DD group compared to that in other conditions. Increases in VO2peak were strongly correlated with changes in RBCs and HCT induced by DD warm-up (r∆RBC = 0.84, r∆HCT = 0.77, p < 0.01). In conclusion, DD BH warm-up appears to optimize subsequent aerobic performance in elite athletes.
Lactate and cardiopulmonary responses to simulated arm-pulling and leg-kicking in collegiate and recreational swimmers

Abstract:Investigations into the changes due to training in the metabolism of the arms or the legs in swimmers of different training status are limited. The purpose of this study was to compare the lactate and cardiopulmonary responses to simulated arm-pulling and leg-kicking in collegiate and recreational swimmers. Sixteen males (9 collegiate swimmers; SW, 7 recreational swimmers; RSW, mean+/-SD; age 22+/-3 years, body mass 81+/-9 kg, stature 1.84+/-0.06 m), gave written consent and performed continuous incremental exercise tests using either simulated front-crawl arm-pulling or leg-kicking. Lactate concentration (HLa) and oxygen consumption (VO2) were determined at 20 W intervals and at exhaustion (HLa(peak); VO2(peak)). The exercise intensity at a lactate concentration of 4 mM (EI4mM) and at exhaustion (EI(peak)) for arm-pulling and leg-kicking were also established. The arm:leg ratios for EI4mM, HLa(peak) and VO2(peak) were computed. The results showed that for arm-pulling, the SW had higher EI4mM (P=0.02), EI(peak) (P=0.006), but lower HLa(peak) (P=0.03) compared to the RSW. For leg-kicking, none of the responses differed significantly. These results suggest that it is rather the metabolism and local muscle endurance of the arms that are enhanced with competitive swimming endurance.
