Abstract:In this work we consider parabolic equations of the form \[ (u_{\varepsilon})_t +A_{\varepsilon}(t)u_{\varepsilon} = F_{\varepsilon} (t,u_{{\varepsilon} }), \] where $\varepsilon$ is a parameter in $[0,\varepsilon_0)$ and $\{A_{\varepsilon}(t), \ t\in \mathbb{R}\}$ is a family of uniformly sectorial operators. As $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0^{+}$, we assume that the equation converges to \[ u_t +A_{0}(t)u_{} = F_{0} (t,u_{}). \] The time-dependence found on the linear operators $A_{\varepsilon}(t)$ implies that linear process is the central object to obtain solutions via variation of constants formula. Under suitable conditions on the family $A_{\varepsilon}(t)$ and on its convergence to $A_0(t)$ when $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0^{+}$, we obtain a Trotter-Kato type Approximation Theorem for the linear process $U_{\varepsilon}(t,\tau)$ associated to $A_{\varepsilon}(t)$, estimating its convergence to the linear process $U_0(t,\tau)$ associated to $A_0(t)$. Through the variation of constants formula and assuming that $F_{\varepsilon}$ converges to $F_0$, we analyze how this linear process convergence is transferred to the solution of the semilinear equation. We illustrate the ideas in two examples. First a reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded smooth domain, obtaining convergence of the linear process and solution. As a consequence, we also obtain upper-semicontinuity of the family of pullback attractors associated to each problem. The second example is a nonautonomous strongly damped wave equation and we analyze convergence of solution as we perturb the fractional powers of the associated linear operator.

Abstract:The classical Dirichlet problem for a second-order strongly elliptic system with constant coefficients in a Jordan domain is considered. We show that the solution of the problem can be represented as a functional series in powers of the parameter, which determines the deviation of the system operator from the Laplacian. This series converges uniformly in the closure of the region under the assumption that the boundary of the region and the boundary function satisfy the sufficient regularity conditions: the trace of a conformal mapping of the domain onto a circle composed with the boundary function belongs to the Holder class with exponent greater than 1/2.

Abstract:We consider parabolic Schrödinger type equations associated to fractional powers of uniformly elliptic 2m-order operators with constant coefficients. Potentials and initial data are considered in suitable Morrey spaces. By means of perturbation techniques we prove that several properties of the problem with no potential are preserved. We also prove continuous dependence of solutions with respect to perturbations. To carry out the analysis a general abstract perturbation approach is developed, which broadens the results known in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain the continuity of attractors for nonlinear parabolic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions when the boundary of the domain varies very rapidly as a parameter $\epsilon$ goes to zero. We consider the case where the boundary of the domain presents a highly oscillatory behavior as the parameter $\epsilon$ goes to zero. For the case where we have a Lipschitz deformation of the boundary with the Lipschitz constant uniformly bounded in $\epsilon$ but the boundaries do not approach in a Lipschitz sense, the solutions of these equations converge in certain sense to the solution of a limit parabolic equation of the same type but where the boundary condition has a factor that captures the oscillations of the boundary. To address this problem, it is necessary to consider the notion of convergence of functions defined in varying domains and the convergence of a family of operators defined in different Banach spaces. Moreover, since we consider problems with nonlinear boundary conditions, it is necessary to extend these concepts to the case of spaces with negative exponents and to operators defined between these spaces.

Abstract:The convergence problem of the family of the deformed Euler–Halley iterations with parameters for solving nonlinear operator equations in Banach spaces is studied. Under the assumption that the second derivative of the operator satisfies the Hölder condition, a convergence criterion of the order 2+p of the iteration family is established. An application to a nonlinear Hammerstein integral equation of the second kind is provided.

Abstract:We study a class of quasi-linear parabolic equations defined on a separable Hilbert space, depending on a small parameter in front of the second order term. Through the nonlinear semigroup associated with such equation, we introduce the corresponding SPDE and we study the asymptotic behavior of its solutions, depending on the small parameter. We show that a large deviations principle holds and we give an explicit description of the action functional.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a quasi-linear Dirichlet system with possible competing $(p,q)$-Laplacians and convections. Due to the lack of ellipticity, monotonicity, and variational structure, the standard approaches to the existence of weak solutions cannot be adopted. Nevertheless, through an approximation procedure and a corollary of Brouwer's fixed point theorem we show that the problem admits a solution in a suitable sense.

Abstract:This is a continuation, and conclusion, of our study of bounded solutions u of the semilinear parabolic equation on the real line whose initial data have finite limits as . We assume that f is a locally Lipschitz function on satisfying minor nondegeneracy conditions. Our goal is to describe the asymptotic behavior of u ( x , t ) as . In the first two parts of this series we mainly considered the cases where either ; or and ; or else , , and is a stable equilibrium of the equation . In all these cases we proved that the corresponding solution u is quasiconvergent—if bounded—which is to say that all limit profiles of as are steady states. The limit profiles, or accumulation points, are taken in . In the present paper, we take on the case that , , and is an unstable equilibrium of the equation . Our earlier quasiconvergence theorem in this case involved some restrictive technical conditions on the solution, which we now remove. Our sole condition on is that it is nonoscillatory (has only finitely many critical points) at some . Since it is known that oscillatory bounded solutions are not always quasiconvergent, our result is nearly optimal.

Abstract:Let u be a solution of a second order semilinear parabolic equation which satisfies either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Let v be a stationary solution of this problem. Then by substituting $u = v + \varepsilon w$, and omitting terms of higher order in $\varepsilon $ than $O( \varepsilon )$, we may formally derive a linear problem. In this paper we discuss the asymptotic behavior of solutions u of the nonlinear problem in relation to such behavior of solutions w of the linear problem. We show that if, for some $\lambda _0 > 0$, $w = O( {e^{ - \lambda _0 t} } )$ as $t \to \infty $ (in the supremum norm), then $u - v = O( {e^{ - \lambda _0 t} } )$ as $t \to \infty $ for suitably restricted initial data, provided the nonlinear term in the original problem is sufficiently smooth in a neighborhood of v. An example is given which demonstrates that without this smoothness condition, the convergence of u towards v may take place at a slower rate than is the case for the linear problem.

Abstract:For linear-quadratic optimal control problems (OCPs) governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), we investigate the impact of perturbations on optimal solutions. Local perturbations may occur, e.g., due to discretization of the optimality system or {disturbed} problem data. Whereas these perturbations may exhibit global effects in the uncontrolled case, we prove that the ramifications are exponentially damped in space under stabilizability and detectability conditions. To this end, we prove a bound on the optimality condition's solution operator that is uniform in the domain size. Then, this uniformity is used in a scaling argument to show the exponential decay of perturbations in space. We numerically validate and illustrate our results by solving OCPs involving Helmholtz, Poisson, and advection-diffusion-reaction equations.

Abstract:This is the final part of a series of papers where we study perturbations of divergence form second order elliptic operators by first and zero order terms, whose complex coefficients lie in critical spaces, via the method of layer potentials. In particular, we show that the well-posedness (with natural non-tangential maximal function estimates) of the Dirichlet, Neumann and regularity problems for complex Hermitian, block form, or constant-coefficient divergence form elliptic operators in the upper half-space are all stable under such perturbations. Due to the lack of the classical De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theory in our setting, our method to prove the non-tangential maximal function estimates relies on a completely new argument: We obtain a certain weak- " $N<s$ " estimate, which we eventually couple with square function bounds, weighted extrapolation theory, and a bootstrapping argument to recover the full bound. Finally, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions in a relatively broad class. As a corollary, we claim the first results in an unbounded domain concerning the -solvability of boundary value problems for the magnetic Schrödinger operator when the magnetic potential and the electric potential V are accordingly small in the norm of a scale-invariant Lebesgue space.</s\)<>

Abstract:This survey revolves around the question how the roots of a monic polynomial (resp. the spectral decomposition of a linear operator), whose coefficients depend in a smooth way on parameters, depend on those parameters. The parameter dependence of the polynomials (resp. operators) ranges from real analytic over $C^\infty$ to differentiable of finite order with often drastically different regularity results for the roots (resp. eigenvalues and eigenvectors). Another interesting point is the difference between the perturbation theory of hyperbolic polynomials (where, by definition, all roots are real) and that of general complex polynomials. The subject, which started with Rellich's work in the 1930s, enjoyed sustained interest through time that intensified in the last two decades, bringing some definitive optimal results. Throughout we try to explain the main proof ideas; Rellich's theorem and Bronshtein's theorem on hyperbolic polynomials are presented with full proofs. The survey is written for readers interested in singularity theory but also for those who intend to apply the results in other fields.

Abstract:We study diffusion processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that leave invariant a finite collection of manifolds (surfaces or points) in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and small perturbations of such processes. Assuming certain ergodic properties at and near the invariant surfaces, we describe the rate at which the process gets attracted to or repelled from the surface, based on the local behavior of the coefficients. For processes that include, additionally, a small non-degenerate perturbation, we describe the metastable behavior. Namely, by allowing the time scale to depend on the size of the perturbation, we observe different asymptotic distributions of the process at different time scales.

Abstract:We develope a perturbation theory for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) by which we mean both stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) and stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). In particular, we estimate the $ L^p $-distance between the solution process of an SDE and an arbitrary Itô process, which we view as a perturbation of the solution process of the SDE, by the $ L^q $-distances of the differences of the local characteristics for suitable $ p, q > 0 $. As application of our perturbation theory, we establish strong convergence rates for numerical approximations of a class of SODEs with non-globally monotone coefficients. As another application of our perturbation theory, we prove strong convergence rates for spectral Galerkin approximations of solutions of semilinear SPDEs with non-globally monotone nonlinearities including Cahn-Hilliard-Cook type equations and stochastic Burgers equations. Further applications of the perturbation theory include the regularity of solutions of SDEs with respect to the initial values and small-noise analysis for ordinary and partial differential equations.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to a linear dynamics for non-autonomous perturbation of the Gibbs semigroup on a separable Hilbert space. It is shown that evolution family {U(t, s)} 0$\le$s$\le$t solving the non-autonomous Cauchy problem can be approximated in the trace-norm topology by product formulae. The rate of convergence of product formulae approximants {U n (t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t,n$\ge$1} to the solution operator {U(t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t} is also established.
