Abstract:In this paper, we compute the conjugacy classes and the list of irreducible characters of GSp(4,q), where q is odd. We also determine precisely which irreducible characters are non-cuspidal and which are generic. These characters are then used to compute dimensions of certain subspaces of fixed vectors of smooth admissible non-supercuspidal representations of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero with residue field of order q.

Abstract:Let $q$ be a prime power, and $d$ a positive integer. We study the proportion of irreducible characters of $\mathrm{GL}(n,q)$ whose values evaluated on a fixed matrix $g$ are divisible by $d$. As $n$ approaches infinity, this proportion tends to $1$ when $q$ is coprime to $d$. When $q$ and $d$ are not coprime, and $g=1$, this proportion is bounded above by $\frac{1}{q}$.

Abstract:In this article, by studying the Bernstein degrees and Goldie rank polynomials, we establish a comparison between the irreducible representations of G = GL n （C） possessing the minimal Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and those induced from finite-dimensional representations of the maximal parabolic subgroup of G of type（n-1, 1）. We give the transition matrix between the two bases for the corresponding coherent families.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a vertex operator approach to construct and compute all complex irreducible characters of the general linear group $\GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$. Green's theory of $\GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$ is recovered and enhanced under the realization of the Grothendieck ring of representations $R_G=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}R(\GL_n(\mathbb F_q))$ as two isomorphic Fock spaces associated to two infinite-dimensional $F$-equivariant Heisenberg Lie algebras $\widehat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\hat{\overline{\mathbb F}}_q}$ and $\widehat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\overline{\mathbb F}_q}$, where $F$ is the Frobenius automorphism of the algebraically closed field $\overline{\mathbb F}_q$. Under this picture, the irreducible characters are realized by the Bernstein vertex operators for Schur functions, the characteristic functions of the conjugacy classes are realized by the vertex operators for the Hall-Littlewood functions, and the character table is completely given by matrix coefficients of vertex operators of these two types. One of the features of the current approach is a simpler identification of the Fock space $R_G$ as the Hall algebra of symmetric functions via vertex operator calculus, and another is that we are able to compute in general the character table, where Green's degree formula is demonstrated as an example.

Abstract:In this note, we determine the irreducible characters for the simple algebraic groups of type $A_5$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic 3, by using a theorem of Xi Nanhua and the Matlab software. In order to obtain higher speed than in Jiachen et al we modify the algorithm to compute the irreducible characters.

Abstract:A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obtain an analogous formula for $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ in the case where $q$ is an odd prime. These results are also given as probabilistic statements.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with absolutely irreducible quasisimple subgroups $G$ of a finite general linear group $GL_d(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for which some element $g\in G$ of prime order $r$, in its action on the natural module $V=(\mathbb{F}_q)^d$, is irreducible on a subspace of the form $V(1-g)$ of dimension $d/2$. We classify $G,d,r$, the characteristic $p$ of the field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and we identify those examples where the element $g$ has a fixed point subspace of dimension $d/2$. Our proof relies on representation theory, in particular, the multiplicities of eigenvalues of $g$, and builds on earlier results of DiMuro.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

Abstract:Let G be a finite subgroup of GL4(Q). The group G induces an action on Q(x1,x2,x3,x4), the rational function field of four variables over Q. Theorem. The fixed subfield Q(x1,x2,x3,x4)G:={f∈Q(x1,x2,x3,x4):σ⋅f=ffor anyσ∈G} is rational (i.e. purely transcendental) over Q, except for two groups which are images of faithful representations of C8 and C3⋊C8 into GL4(Q) (both fixed fields for these two exceptional cases are not rational over Q). There are precisely 227 such groups in GL4(Q) up to conjugation; the answers to the rationality problem for most of them were proved by Kitayama and Yamasaki (2009) [KY] except for four cases. We solve these four cases left unsettled by Kitayama and Yamasaki; thus the whole problem is solved completely.

Abstract:For a fixed prime power $q$, let $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$ denote the family of groups $\text{GL}_N(q)$ for $N \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra of "stable" class functions of $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$, and show it admits four different linear bases, each arising naturally in different settings. One such basis is that of stable irreducible characters, namely, the class functions spanned by the characters corresponding to finitely generated simple $\mathrm{VI}$-modules in the sense of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1408.3694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1408.3694">arXiv:1408.3694</a>,<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.00654" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.00654">arXiv:1602.00654</a>]. A second one comes from characters of parabolic representations. The final two, one originally defined in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1803.04155" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.04155">arXiv:1803.04155</a>] and the other in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.11099" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.11099">arXiv:2110.11099</a>], are more combinatorial in nature. As corollaries, we clarify many properties of these four bases and prove a conjecture from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.11587" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.11587">arXiv:2106.11587</a>].

Element orders and codegrees of characters in non-solvable groups

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as the integer ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:\ker\chi|/\chi(1)$. It was conjectured by G. Qian in [13] that, for every element $g$ of $G$, there exists an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ such that ${\rm cod}(\chi)$ is a multiple of the order of $g$; the conjecture has been verified under the assumption that $G$ is solvable ([13]) or almost-simple ([11]). In this paper, we prove that Qian's conjecture is true for every finite group whose Fitting subgroup is trivial, and we show that the analysis of the full conjecture can be reduced to groups having a solvable socle.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the finite solvable groups with non-complete character degree graphs by proving the following theorem, which generalizes a conjecture by Huppert. Suppose that G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime number dividing the degree of some irreducible character of G. If there is another such prime number q such that pq does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of G, then both p-length lp(G) and q-length lq(G) of G are at most two, and lp(G)+ lq(G)=4 if and only if pq=6 with QG/Zφ(QG)≅ 32:GL(2,3), where QG is generated by all Sylow 2-subgroups of G and Zφ(G) is a normal nilpotent subgroup of G. Moreover, the bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be an irreducible polynomial with rational coefficients and Galois group [Formula: see text]. We extend previous results to give an elementary classification of [Formula: see text], identified as a transitive subgroup of [Formula: see text] up to conjugacy. We show [Formula: see text] is one of 12 possibilities and can be determined by considering the squareness of at most 11 rational numbers; each number is an expression involving [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. We give several applications of our results.

Abstract:We introduce the definition of the typical irreducible modules of the generalized quantum groups, and prove the Weyl–Kac-type formulas of their characters. As a by-product, we obtain the Weyl–Kac-type character formulas of the typical irreducible modules of the quantum superalgebras associated with the basic classical Lie superalgebras, which is explained in Introduction.

Abstract:We prove the following theorem: Let $\bar\F_p$ be an algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $p$. Let $\rho$ be a continuous homomorphism from the absolute Galois group of $\Q$ to $\GL(3,\bar\F_p)$ which is isomorphic to a direct sum of a character and a two-dimensional odd irreducible representation. Under the condition that the conductor of $\rho$ is squarefree, we prove that $\rho$ is attached to a Hecke eigenclass in the homology of an arithmetic subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\GL(3,\Z)$. In addition, we prove that the coefficient module needed is, in fact, predicted by a conjecture of Ash, Doud, Pollack, and Sinnott.

Abstract:In 1919, Ramanujan proved red three congruences for the partition function p ( n ) which denotes the number of partitions of n . The partition function p ( n ) can be understood as the number of irreducible characters of the symmetric group S n . Recently, Nath and Sellers, and Xia established a number of congruences modulo 2, 3, and 5 for the numbers of spin characters of Ŝn and Ân , where Ŝn and Ân are the double covering group of S n and the double covering group of the alternating group A n , respectively. Motivated by their work, we establish infinite families of congruences modulo 5 for a ( n ), which denotes the number of irreducible characters of the alternating group A n . In particular, we prove some strange congruences modulo 5 for a ( n ). For example, we prove that for k≥0 , a(95×732k+124)≡−3k (mod5).
