Abstract:A History of the Literature of the U.S. South provides scholars with a dynamic and heterogeneous examination of southern writing from John Smith to Natasha Trethewey. Eschewing a master narrative limited to predictable authors and titles, the anthology adopts a variegated approach that emphasizes the cultural and political tensions crucial to the making of this regional literature. Certain chapters focus on major white writers (e.g., Thomas Jefferson, William Faulkner, the Agrarians, Cormac McCarthy), but a substantial portion of the work foregrounds the achievements of African American writers like Frederick Douglass, Zora Neale Hurston, and Sarah Wright to address the multiracial and transnational dimensions of this literary formation. Theoretically informed and historically aware, the volume's contributors collectively demonstrate how southern literature constitutes an aesthetic, cultural and political field that richly repays examination from a variety of critical perspectives.

Abstract:Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern,Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties are known as the middle ancient ages in the history of Chinese literature.The newly unearthed documents will contribute to a reexamination of literary background,literary evolution,literary ontology and stylistic form of these dynasties to correct the traditional heavy reliance in literary history on longitudinal combing.First,unearthed documents play an important role for the research on regional literary history to regain the initiative.Second,the research on unearthed documents is helpful to probe into the literary phenomena buried by history.Third,unearthed documents are significant for the research of essay,especially for the further study on stylistic forms dominated by practical writing.Because unearthed documents are excavated in odds and ends by accident,they should be compared with historical recordation in study.A comprehensive perspective of social-cultural science,based on the restoration of unearthed texts,will thus shed light on the natural process of birth and growth of literature.

Abstract:Chapter 3 considers the myriad nature of southern memoir, with particular focus on the anti-racist work of Lillian Smith. Published in a decade replete with southerners writing about the South, including W. J. Cash’s The Mind of the South , William Percy’s Lanterns on the Levee , and Richard Wright’s Black Boy , Lillian Smith’s Killers of the Dream confronts southern paternalism in a stark, direct manner. Specifically, Smith responds to many of her contemporaries by presenting the South not as a romantic site of gentility, but rather as a psychologically traumatizing hellscape, one replete with specters of violence perpetrated against blacks as well as paternalistic control levied against women and poor whites. This chapter contextualizes Smith alongside these other writers, with primary focus on Percy's nostalgia and romanticization of southern gentility, as well as his disdain for poor whites, whom he derides as scoundrels and markedly inferior versions of whiteness.

Abstract:Literature and History are two branches closely related to each other. Literature has always been the tool of bringing out the outcry of the oppressed class of people whose histories were little known of. History was never real. It is just the manipulation of facts and events by those holding thresholds of power in the society, in order to maintain their unquestionable power over those people subjugated by them. But still the manipulation of histories can be understood by a parallel study of a non-historical text published during the same period, which is brought out in the theory of New Historicism. In a similar way the historical texts written during the period of the American Civil war will bring out the pain and suffering of the oppressed, the blacks in the hands of the subjugators, the whites in a more sophisticated way. But the exact pain of not only the blacks but also the mulattoes can be studied in the light of another text. In this research, the literary text employed is Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Thus the exact history of a period can be learned, not only by means of a history text, but also by means of a literary novel and even be visualized in the form of a movie.

Abstract:Study of left-wing literature in the 1930s so far has been divided into three stages:1929-1948,1949-1978,and 1979-2011.Influenced by then cultural climate,the researchers of each stage have both accomplishments and limitations.The future study should focus on the collection,exploration and use of the left-wing literature sources;not regarding them as historical materials with new ideas;avoiding such research method as using theory to replace history so as to restore the original situation and grasp the history of left-wing literature in multiple historical relations.

Abstract:I wrote my dissertation in the late 1990s. it compared harriet beecher stowe and other antebellum sentimental women writers with professional male orators and rhetoricians. I argued that these women authors hadn't been writing in a rhetorical room of their own. Instead, they were solving problems that the professionals could not. While writing the dissertation, I asked a friend who was in my program to read my chapter on the most popular book in the nineteenth-century United States, Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Abstract:The Soviet Union produced a large amount of literature with a historical sweep.This essay examines three main types of history constructed in literature of the Soviet Union,namely mainstream history,authorial history,and textual history.Mainstream history constructs a particular version of reality from the dominant perspective and reflects the interest of the ruling class.Authorial history goes beyond the mainstream history by offering alternative interpretations that challenge the existing ideology.However,in those works,too much authorial involvement restricts the reader's evaluation and sets limits on what a literary text provokes.The third type emphasizes the importance of language in the construction and apprehension of the past.Seeing literary texts as an aesthetic and metaphorical expression of individual experiences,those writers critically interrogate history and weave that interrogation into the texture of the historical writing.

Abstract:This article explores two related subjects in antebellum southern history. First, it examines the public image of the merchant class as depicted in antebellum southern literature, mainly novels and newspaper sketches. Influenced by but distinguished from conventions found in British and broader American literature, southern writers portrayed the merchant class as outsiders who threatened their unique society. Only the occasional newspaper editor, seeing his own community’s interests as tied to that of its businessmen, highlighted the virtues of the mercantile trade. Second, the article compares the stereotypical merchant to the profile and actual experience of the merchant class in the Old South. The dichotomy between the fictional and historical lives of these commercial men suggests how southern writers distinguished their romanticized cultural ideals from the commercial values they associated with the northern United States.

Abstract:In the reform era,American literature has got unprecedented attention in China.The very first literary history of a foreign country published after the "Cultural Revolution" was A Short History of American Literature(Volume I) which appeared in 1978.Since then we have seen the publication of many different histories of American literature.This paper starts with a review of the first edition of A Short History of American Literature(Volume I) to see its strong points and limitations.Then it discusses the changes in the revised edition of 1986 and the new edition in 2003.Chang Yao-xin's History of American Literature(Volume I) demonstrates his own unique understanding and interpretation of American literature.The paper ends with a survey of the four-volume New History of American Literature,showing its remarkable achievements in bringing together new materials and providing a comprehensive history of American literature.

Abstract:This unusual book explores the historical assumptions at work in the style of literary criticism that came to dominate English studies in the twentieth century. Stefan Collini shows how the work of critics renowned for their close attention to ‘the words on the page’ was in practice bound up with claims about the nature and direction of historical change, the interpretation of the national past, and the scholarship of earlier historians. Among the major figures examined in detail are T. S. Eliot, F. R. Leavis, William Empson, and Raymond Williams, while there are also original discussions of such figures as Basil Willey, L. C. Knights, Q. D. Leavis, and Richard Hoggart. In the period between Eliot’s The Sacred Wood and Williams’s The Long Revolution , the writings of such critics came to occupy the cultural space left by academic history’s retreat into specialized, archive-bound monographs. Their work challenged the assumptions of the Whig interpretation of English history and entailed a revision of the traditional relations between ‘literary history’ and ‘general history’. Combining close textual analysis with wide-ranging intellectual history, this book both revises the standard story of the history of literary criticism and illuminates a central feature of the cultural history of twentieth-century Britain.

Abstract:The nineteenth century was a period in which American people would have heard of the violence of slavery on a routine basis. Certain newspapers reported the transgressions of slaveowners and overseers, while other accounts and testimonials of former slaves, dissenting southerners and visitors to the region were published both in the North and in Britain. This chapter presents how close reading of the texts can help us dispel this political smokescreen and identify the traces and legacies of violence in even the most romanticized of texts. It shows is that the violence is never totally veiled and a careful study of southern romances reveals cultural and political complexities that white authors themselves may have been unable to anticipate. Southern literature of the antebellum period needs to be read with this close eye for detail if the full complexity of its response to slavery’s structural violence is to be understood.

Abstract:Modernist Literature and European Identity examines how European and non-European authors debated the idea of Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. It shifts the focus from European modernism to modernist Europe, and shows how the notion of Europe was constructed in a variety of modernist texts. Authors such as Ford Madox Ford, T. S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, Aimé Césaire, and Nancy Cunard each developed their own notion of Europe. They engaged in transnational networks and experimented with new forms of writing, supporting, or challenging a European ideal. Building on insights gained from global modernism and network theory, this book suggests that rather than defining Europe through a set of core principles, we may also regard it as an open or weak construct, a crossroads where different authors and views converge and collide.

Abstract:Despite growing attentiveness to cities in the global south, questions remain as to how to enact a more global urban studies. We analyze five contemporary textbooks as a lens into how southern cities ought to be incorporated in teaching as well as the field of urban geography. We find both separate chapters for southern cities (southern urbanism), and southern cities integrated into existing thematic chapters (a world of cities). We further show that i) the global south is 2–33% of the content; ii) information about the south is typically more general than the north, but never as universal trends iii) representations differ not just in content but in style and iv) the south is exemplar or exception rather than as a source of theory. We suggest that geographers must continue their efforts in thinking about how southern cities should be incorporated in urban geography in and outside the classroom.

Abstract:Tragic twenty-first century events linked to southern identity prompt reflection on regional identification in rhetoric's critical literature. Doing so reveals the same "imagined marginality" seen in the broader public discourse, of counterpublic rhetoric that circulates an identification of exclusion from dominant identity. Southern regional theory and critical regionalism together reveal that topoi of space, historical consciousness, and insider-outsider hierarchy create relational identity. From the Agrarians' victimization to the still pernicious redemption of early U.S. public address critics, up to accommodation by late twentieth century and contemporary critics, the record shows the complicity of the field in southern marginality discourses.

Abstract:Chapter 1 locates the treatment of poor whites in the new plantation tradition of post-Reconstruction southern literature, with especial focus on Thomas Dixon’s work, his respondent Sutton Griggs, and Charles Chesnutt, whose 1905 novel The Colonel’s Dream analyses the ascendance of poor whites into formerly bourgeois spaces. Focusing on Dixon, the chapter discusses how racial anxiety relates to the myths surrounding the protection of white womanhood during the Lost Cause era, while also revealing that, for all of Dixon’s pronouncements regarding white unity, a closer look at his work reveals a fundamental disdain for poor whites that, while lacking the outright violence against blacks we see in his works, nevertheless bears a resemblance to the racist language meted out against blacks. Analysis of Sutton Griggs, whose novel The Hindered Hand responds to Dixon directly, further challenges the latter's racist assumptions.

Abstract:This book reveals a synergy between postsecularity – as a critique of emergent liberal secular ideals and practices – and the modern literary sphere, in which conservative writers feature prominently. Corrinne Harol argues boldly yet compellingly that influential literary forms and practices including fiction, mental freedom, worlding, reading, narration, and historical fiction are in fact derived from these writers' responses to secularization. Interrogating a series of concepts – faith, indulgence, figuring, reading, passivity, revolution, and nostalgia – central to secular culture, this study also engages with works by Aphra Behn, John Dryden, Margaret Cavendish and Walter Scott, as well as attending to the philosophies of Thomas Hobbes, David Hume, and Edmund Burke. Countering eighteenth-century studies' current overreliance on the secularization narrative (as content and method, fact and norm), this book models how a postsecular approach can help us to understand this period, and secularization itself, more fully.
