Abstract:In the mid-fifteenth century, Venice inherited Cardinal Bessarione's collection of ancient manuscripts, an exceptional legacy that contributed to the renewal of mathematical studies. This essay outlines the spread of mathematics in Venice in the early Renaissance, when scholars actively discussed Euclid and universal proportions. Based on this cultural context, the author briefly analyzes the role of polyhedra and an example of the application of proportions to architecture: the church of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice. This church is an interesting and rare case of 'declared' application of proportions to architecture, since we have specific indications in Francesco Zorzi's memorandum written in 1535.

Abstract:Precision in building was pursued and achieved well before the rise of modern science and technology. This fact applies to the classical tradition as well as to medieval architecture, and is particularly evident in architectural drawings and design from the Italian Renaissance onward. In this essay, I trace the shift from geometry-the primary tool for quantification in classical architecture- to numeracy that characterizes Renaissance architectural theory and practice. I also address some more general aspects of the relation between technologies of quantification and the making of architectural forms.

Abstract:During the Renaissance, the language of proportion became a unified theory capable of encompassing the understanding of the world within a coherent theological, philosophical and artistic framework. Music, with its harmonic paradigm, plays a key role in this construction. From the fifteenth century through to the end of the sixteenth century, architects and architectural theorists made reference, both in new treatises and commentaries to Vitruvius, to musical matters, transforming architecture into the summa of knowledge. The affinity to music was grounded on both a common mathematical and rhetoric gnosiology. Formerly conceived of as ideal, numbers became eloquent, reinforcing the quantitative paradigm of proportion with its qualitative one. The language of proportion as a compositional tool reveals the shift between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: while the Medieval tèchne based on modular thinking provides beauty and universal truth using the technique of repetition, the Humanist paradigm of variety produces pleasure and individual truth – a condition typical of the premodern.

Abstract:In classical culture, architecture and mathematics were strongly connected by a parallel sense of beauty. The conceptual beauty of mathematical rules was echoed in the search for canons of beauty in art. Scientists and artists both pursued divine perfection. In his treatise titled De Architectura Libri Decem, the Roman architect-engineer, Marco Vitruvius Pollio, conveyed to the Renaissance the cultural background inherited from Classical culture, whose substance and values were in turn conveyed to posterity by the Renaissance humanists. For Vitruvius, beauty in architecture will originate from the numbers that the designer will carefully and knowingly choose while sizing the geometric shapes of the designed object: the numbers, their ratios, their proportion, their modularity, and their commensurability. Renaissance humanists also included in the many mathematically beautiful items the peculiar proportion that Euclid used to name the “extreme and mean ratio.” The mathematician Luca Pacioli named it “the divine proportion.” A further geometric form became essential to Renaissance architecture when, toward the end of the fifteenth century, a new diagram appeared in Italian religious architecture: the central plan. In centrally planned churches, the dome rises over the heads (and souls) of the worshippers, thus creating a different spatial relationship between the single individual and the house of God. The central space and its dome represent the Earth under the Heavens, with Man at the center of the universe. While these geometric forms and systems were embedded in architectural plans, the Renaissance is also the time in which the geometric rules for perspective representation were reinvented, thus providing designers with a new work tool.

Abstract:We show how the birth of perspective painting in the Italian Renaissance led to a new way of interpreting space that resulted in the creation of projective geometry. Unlike other works on this subject, we explicitly show how the craft of the painters implied the introduction of new points and lines (points and lines at infinity) and their projective coordinates to complete the Euclidean space to what is now called projective space. We demonstrate this idea by looking at original paintings from the Renaissance, and by carrying out the explicit analytic calculations that underpin those masterpieces.

Abstract:Renaissance magic was an attempt to supply Platonism with a philosophy of nature that could compete with Aristotelian physics. It was expected to heal the increasing breach between science and faith. However, the basic presupposition of every magic worldview, the notion of a living universe, favors immanentism and arguably hastened the rise of secularism. Secularism, it should be noted, was not an identifiable set of theories but a process towards modernity with its correspondent philosophical theology. Three different stages in that development can be shown in the philosophical systems of three famous Renaissance magicians: Henry Cornelius Agrippa, Giordano Bruno, and Tommaso Campanella.

Abstract:The use of mathematical structures as a design tool by Luigi Moretti, the first theorist of Architettura Parametrica , is an unexplored theme even though he repeatedly stressed their importance in his writings. Moretti proposed that bringing design thinking closer to mathematical formalisations could profoundly renew the discipline of architecture. However, he also warns that these formalisations may overwhelm architecture's values to which a numerical dimension cannot be associated. The reconstruction and discussion of the mathematics behind his swimming stadiums featured in the 1960 Architettura Parametrica exhibition permits us to understand how Moretti intended a design process informed by formalised methods. This paper proposes a novel reading, based on unpublished archival sources and presented with both theoretical and practical approaches, of one the first applications that interweaves formal methods, mathematics, digital tools and scientific thought in architecture.

Some mathematical and geometrical interpretations of the Sator Square

Abstract:In 1738, the King of Naples and future King of Spain, Carlos III, commissioned the Spanish military engineer Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre to begin the excavations of the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii and its surroundings, buried by the terrible explosion of Vesuvius in AD 79. Since that time, archaeologists have brought to light wonderful treasures found in the among ruins. Among them, the Sator Square is one of the most peculiar, apparently simple but mysterious. Supernatural and medicinal powers have been attributed to this object and its use was widespread during the Middle Age. Studies to explain its origin and meaning have been varied. There are theories that relate it to religion, the occult, medicine and music. However, no explanation has been convincing beyond pseudo-scientific sensationalism. In this study, the author intends to eliminate the mystical character of the Sator Square and suggests considering it as a simple palindrome or a game of words with certain symmetrical properties. However, these properties are not exclusive to the Sator Suare but are present in various mathematical and geometric objects.

Abstract:Leonardo’s mathematical notes bear witness to a work in progress and allow us to look directly into the mind of the writer. In Leonardo we find two of the three fundamental classical geometric problems: the duplication of the cube and the quadrature of the circle. While Leonardo is extremely familiar with two-dimensional geometry problems, and proposes playful graphic exercises of adding and subtracting polygonal surfaces of all kinds, he is still unable to solve the problem of the duplication of the cube. Numerous pages testify of the attempt to rise above planar geometry and reach the realm of the third dimension, but Leonardo always bumps against the limits of quantity calculation possibilities of his age.

The relevant role of calculus in renaissance domes’ design, before differential geometry was born

Abstract:We take under consideration two masonry domes built during Italian Renaissance: the Santa Maria del Fiore dome in Florence by F. Brunelleschi and St. Peter's dome in Rome by Michelangelo. No original computation is known currently in reference to neither one nor the other. However present mathematical computations show that, even though probably unconsciously, the designs of both the domes were inspired by the use of catenary, a trascendent mathematical curve with excellent stability properties. It was defined and studied in details by Leibniz and Bernoulli brothers at the end of the 17<sup>th</sup> century (within the context of rising differential geometry) a long time later than both the domes were completely built. Therefore the two considered domes suggest that some practical applications of differential geometry in architecture design can be considered foregoing its theoretical formalization. Here we show some numerical computation which support this hypothesis. The aim of this work is to show that knowledge quite often is created in processes and not invented in a moment; in particular here we focus on the development of differential calculus related to its applications to equilibrium of masonry domes.

Abstract:As I have argued elsewhere, Fibonacci is an early exponent of a burgeoning abbacus culture, more likely to flourish in his time in other areas around the Mediterranean (including the Catalan-Provençal area) than in Italy. It is obvious, however, that the Liber abbaci is much more than a normal abbacus book as we know it from later Italy. Indeed, analysis of the appearances of the notions of ratio and proportion in the book shows how these, not present in "proto-abbacus" culture, are applied to abbacus material, in principle thus seeing abbacus mathematics in the perspective of "magisterial" mathematics but without changing it fundamentally. This conclusion can also be drawn regarding the modest integration of ratio and proportion in algebra. The only exception is chapter 15, section 1, whose main part explores the ancient theory of means (geometric, harmonic, their sub-contraries, etc. - without Fibonacci knowing so), showing how to find either the mean or one of the extremes from the other two numbers.

Abstract:The collaboration of mathematics in the two musical systems of Pythagorean sounds and of equal sounds is evident and opportune for generating the elements and managing their relationships. The only essential notion for a rational intervention in the two sound worlds is that of distance between sounds. The scale of natural sounds does not seem to dialogue directly with a purely mathematical module that articulates its definition and is generally presented as a manual adjustment of the ancient Pythagorean sounds. The model of proportions that formed and inspired the architecture of the sixteenth century, an era in which the natural scale emerges, provides a clear idea for systematically adjusting natural sounds; on the other hand, the generation of sounds based and started exclusively on the respect of the proportions proposes interesting natural sound systems. The object is not so much to illustrate the harmonic device of the already formed natural scale, as to implement the formation of sound elements that respond to the unitary principle of proportion and combine harmoniously.

Abstract:This paper looks at how ancient mathematicians (and especially the Pythagorean school) were faced by problems/paradoxes associated with the infinite which led them to juggle two systems of numbers: the discrete whole/rationals which were handled arithmetically and the continuous magnitude quantities which were handled geometrically. We look at how approximations and mixed numbers (whole numbers with fractions) helped develop the arithmetization of geometry and the development of mathematical analysis and real numbers.

Abstract:The stratified relationship and mutual influence between the representation of the project and the form of built architecture manifest above all in the facade design by virtue of its natural rhetorical vocation. This is the case of the Casa dei Filippini, designed by Francesco Borromini in the second quarter of the 17th century in Rome. The perspective niche in its façade appears to be a literal three-dimensional transcription of a graphic convention adopted in the presentation drawings. To understand the context and the reasons for this “translation”, this article historically frames the theme of the facade intended as a mask and its implicit representational qualities, which can configure it as an autonomous work from the building itself; it frames the interferences between architecture and its image in the era of the advent of pseudo-projective representation and the resistance it finds; it focuses on the facade of the Casa dei Filippini and its perspective niche, here surveyed and photo-modeled to determine the size and relationship between the actual and the perceived shape. Through these methodological and operational premises, the article reconstructs the original center of the façade deformation and analyzes the fictitious value of the facade, as testified by Borromini’s attempt to orient its perception through the drawings of his Opus Architectonicum and those derived from them, eventually confirming the two-way relationship between form and representation.

Abstract:Ancient astronomers faced the problem of dealing with arcs and angles in their observations and predictions without the help of modern trigonometry. The usual method to deal with such problems was the Menelaus Theorem, explicitly discussed and extensively used by Ptolemy. It is generally assumed that Hipparchus, who in his Exegesis explicitly states that he developed a method to calculate Simultaneous Risings and Settings, used either the Menelaus' Theorem, or stereographic projections, even if both methods are only attested for later periods and their availability to Hipparchus is debated. In this paper we argue that simultaneous risings and settings could be calculated using less advanced mathematical tools unquestionably available to Hipparchus: the theorem of Pythagoras, the theory of proportions, and the table of chords. Without claiming that this was indeed the method that Hipparchus used, we argue that there is no need to postulate the availability of more sophisticated tools to carry out the calculations which Hipparchus mentions in the Exegesis.

Abstract:The paper draws a parallel between the Italian domes of the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral by Brunelleschi, the Villa Barbaro temple by Palladio, and the Umiltà sanctuary by Vasari, which covers all structural aspects concerned with their whole life cycle; from the concept and design through to construction, performance, damage and safety assessment.The first dome promoted greater knowledge of the capabilities of materials and structural design: although Brunelleschi’s dome was Gothic, it started the Renaissance.The second and third domes referred to existing buildings; Palladio imitated the image whereas Vasari also imitated the structure; while Palladio’s dome was stable and is still safe, Vasari’s dome was unstable and needed retrofitting.This interdisciplinary study offers new insights into and knowledge about those historical buildings, which are relevant to researchers, teachers, and practitioners alike, because they show that structural design is crucial in every aspect of architecture and underpins the architectural design process. Moreover, the study proves that reading and interpreting a historical piece of architecture needs structural engineering.

Abstract:The characteristic structural forms of large Renaissance churches-domes, drums, pendentives, and barrel vaults-were the products of innovation in theory and practice during the later fifteenth century in Italy that culminated in Bramante's projects for the new Saint Peter's. Significant ideas were contributed by Leon Battista Alberti, Francesco di Giorgio, and Leonardo da Vinci. Francesco di Giorgio's geometrical methods of design for churches as described in his second treatise incorporate a procedure for calculating the thickness of walls bearing vaults. Francesco di Giorgio tested the procedure in his own churches, and it was later used by Bramante.
