Abstract:The “unknown heritage” is the name usually given to a problem type in whose archetype a father leaves to his first son 1 monetary unit and \({\frac{1}{n}}\) (n usually being 7 or 10) of what remains, to the second 2 units and \({\frac{1}{n}}\) of what remains, and so on. In the end, all sons get the same, and nothing remains. The earliest known occurrence is in Fibonacci’s Liber abbaci, which also contains a number of much more sophisticated versions, together with a partial algebraic solution for one of these and rules for all which do not follow from his algebraic calculation. The next time the problem turns up is in Planudes’s late thirteenth century Calculus according to the Indians, Called the Great. After that the simple problem type turns up regularly in Provençal, Italian and Byzantine sources. It seems never to appear in Arabic or Indian writings, although two Arabic texts (one from c. 1190) contain more regular problems where the number of shares is given; they are clearly derived from the type known from European and Byzantine works, not its source. The sophisticated versions turn up again in Barthélemy de Romans’ Compendy de la praticque des nombres (c. 1467) and, apparently inspired from there, in the appendix to Nicolas Chuquet’s Triparty (1484). Apart from a single trace in Cardano’s Practica arithmetice et mensurandi singularis, the sophisticated versions never surface again, but the simple version spreads for a while to German practical arithmetic and, more persistently, to French polite recreational mathematics. Close examination of the texts shows that Barthélemy cannot have drawn his familiarity with the sophisticated rules from Fibonacci. It also suggests that the simple version is originally either a classical, strictly Greek or Hellenistic, or a medieval Byzantine invention; and that the sophisticated versions must have been developed before Fibonacci within an environment (located in Byzantium, Provence, or possibly in Sicily?) of which all direct traces has been lost, but whose mathematical level must have been quite advanced.

Abstract:We examined the development of numerical magnitude representations of fractions and decimals from fourth to 12th grade. In Experiment 1, we assessed the rational number magnitude knowledge of 200 Chinese fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, and 12th graders (92 girls and 108 boys) by presenting fraction and decimal magnitude comparison tasks as well as fraction and decimal 0-1 and 0-5 number line estimation tasks. Magnitude representations of decimals became accurate earlier, improved more rapidly, and reached a higher asymptotic accuracy than magnitude representations of fractions. Analyses of individual differences revealed positive relations between the accuracy of decimal and fraction magnitude representations at all ages. In Experiment 2, we presented an additional set of 24 fourth graders (14 girls and 10 boys) with the same tasks but with the decimals that were being compared varying in the number of decimal digits. The decimal advantage continued to be present for both magnitude comparison and estimation tasks, indicating that the greater accuracy with decimals was not limited to decimals with equal numbers of decimal digits, though unequal numbers of decimal digits did impact performance with decimals on both magnitude comparison and number line estimation tasks. Abstract:Throughout more than two millennia many formulas have been obtained, some of them beautiful, to calculate the number pi. Among them, we can find series, infinite products, expansions as continued fractions and expansions using radicals. Some expressions which are (amazingly) related to pi have been evaluated. In addition, a continual battle has been waged just to break the records computing digits of this number; records have been set using rapidly converging series, ultra fast algorithms and really surprising ones, calculating isolated digits. The development of powerful computers has played a fundamental role in these achievements of calculus.

Abstract:The Fibonacci numbers are familiar to all of us. They appear unexpectedly often in mathematics, so much there is an entire journal and a sequence of conferences dedicated to their study. However, there is also another sequence of numbers associated with Fibonacci. In The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, a sequence of numbers which is an approximation to the real root of the cubic polynomial. Fibonacci gave the first few numbers in the sequence in the manuscript Flos from around 1215. Fibonacci stated an error in the last number and based on this error we try, in this paper to reconstruct the method used by Fibonacci. Fibonacci gave no indication on how he determined the numbers and the problem of identifying possible methods was raised already the year after the first transcribed version of the manuscript was published in 1854. There are three possible methods available to Fibonacci to solve the cubic equation; two of the methods have been shown to give Fibonacci's result. In this paper we show that also the third method gives the same result, and we argue that this is the most likely method.

Abstract:We study the square root computation by Leonardo Fibonacci (or Leonardo of Pisa) in his MSS Liber Abaci from c1202 and c1228 and De Practica Geometrie from c1220. In this MSS, Fibonacci systematically describes finding the integer part of the square root of an integer in numerous examples with three to seven decimal digits. The results of these examples are summarized in a table in the paper. Liber Abaci also describes in detail finding an approximation to the fractional part of the square root. However, in other examples in Liber Abaci and De Practica Geometrie, only the approximate values of the fractional part of the square roots are stated. This paper further explores these approximate values using techniques like reverse engineering. Contrary to many claims that Fibonacci also used other methods or approximations, we show that all examples can be explained using one digit-by-digit method to compute the integer part of the square root and one approximation scheme for the fractional part. Further, it is shown that the approximation scheme is tied to the method to compute the integer part of the square root.

Abstract:We study the square root computation by Leonardo Fibonacci (or Leonardo of Pisa) in his MSS Liber Abaci from c1202 and c1228 and De Practica Geometrie from c1220. We annotate a translation of Liber Abaci based on transcripts from 1857 and 2020 and a translation from 2002 and a transcription of De Practica Geometrie from 1862 and a translation from 2008. We show that Fibonacci is demonstrating the same method for all examples in the MSS and that this method deviates from the traditional description of the digit--by--digit method. The description of the method used by Fibonacci is all verbal and summarized in tables for each square root example. The manuscripts and transcription of the Latin texts are incomplete for some of the examples and the transcription and translation contains minor discrepancies and some of the tables are incomplete and the missing digits are inserted.

Abstract:The origin of the numerals that we inherited from the arabo-Islamic civilization remained one enigma. The hypothesis of the Indian origin remained, with controversies, without serious rival. It was the dominant hypothesis since more of one century. Its partisans found to it and constructed a lot of arguments. The testimonies of the medieval authors have been interpreted to its advantage. The opposite opinions have been dismissed and ignored. An amalgam between the history of our modern numerals and the Indian mathematics history is made. Rational contradictions often passed under silence. A meticulous observation of the numerals permits to affirm that our numerals are in fact more or less modified Arabic letters. The "Ghubari" shape of the numerals shows that the symbol of a numeral corresponds to the Arabic letter whose numerical value is equal to this numeral. The numerals don't have a simple resemblance with some Arabic letters, but every number looks like the Arabic letter whose numerical value is equal to this numeral. The elements of the ''Abjadi'' calculation gives us a theoretical support, independent of the letters and numerals, witch explains our observation. Besides a re-lecture of the testimonies of the medieval authors, particularly the testimony of Al-Biruni, that is probably at the origin of all others testimonies speaking of the Indian origin of the numerals, is in agreement with the fact that our numerals are Arabic letters. We have there a second way concerning the origin of our modern numerals that is only to its beginnings. The deepened researches are necessary to understand the history of our numerals better. A rigorous re-lecture of the medieval testimonies with a new mind imposes itself.

Abstract:In the first article in the series examining mathematics on coins, we discuss two great scientists who are not only featured on many coins, but also contributed to both theory and practice of coinage. The first one is Nicolaus Copernicus, author of the treaty \emph{Monetae cudendae ratio} in which he proposed the law governing competition between money and proposed reform of coinage in the Royal Prussia. The second one is Sir Isaac Newton, warden and Master of the Royal Mint, and overseer of the Great Recoinage of 1696.
Emergence of Mathematics in Ancient India: A Reassessment

Abstract:This work explores a possible course of evolution of mathematics in ancient times in India when there was no script, no place-value system, and no zero. Reviewing examples of time-reckoning, large numbers, sacrificial altar-making, and astronomy, it investigates the role of concrete objects, natural events, rituals and names in context-dependent arithmetic, revealing its limited scope confined to counting, addition and subtraction. Higher operations, namely, multiplication, division and fractional calculations had to wait until the advent of symbolic numerals and procedures for computation. It is argued that the impression of these higher operations in a period usually known as the Vedic times is caused by inadvertent interpolation of present knowledge of mathematics in modern readings of the ancient texts.

Abstract:In the mid-fifteenth century, Venice inherited Cardinal Bessarione's collection of ancient manuscripts, an exceptional legacy that contributed to the renewal of mathematical studies. This essay outlines the spread of mathematics in Venice in the early Renaissance, when scholars actively discussed Euclid and universal proportions. Based on this cultural context, the author briefly analyzes the role of polyhedra and an example of the application of proportions to architecture: the church of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice. This church is an interesting and rare case of 'declared' application of proportions to architecture, since we have specific indications in Francesco Zorzi's memorandum written in 1535.

Abstract:Precision in building was pursued and achieved well before the rise of modern science and technology. This fact applies to the classical tradition as well as to medieval architecture, and is particularly evident in architectural drawings and design from the Italian Renaissance onward. In this essay, I trace the shift from geometry-the primary tool for quantification in classical architecture- to numeracy that characterizes Renaissance architectural theory and practice. I also address some more general aspects of the relation between technologies of quantification and the making of architectural forms.

Abstract:Since the 1950s, “Babylonian mathematics” has often served to open expositions of the general history of mathematics. Since it is written in a language and a script which only specialists understand, it has always been dealt with differently by the “insiders”, the Assyriologists who approached the texts where it manifests itself as philologists and historians of Mesopotamian culture, and by “outsiders”, historians of mathematics who had to rely on second-hand understanding of the material (actually, of as much of this material as they wanted to take into account), but who saw it as a constituent of the history of mathematics. The article deals with how these different approaches have looked in various periods: pre-decipherment speculations; the early period of deciphering, 1847–1929; the “golden decade”, 1929–1938, where workers with double competence (primarily Neugebauer and Thureau-Dangin ) attacked the corpus and demonstrated the Babylonians to have possessed unexpectedly sophisticated mathematical knowledge; and the ensuing four decades, where some mopping-up without change of perspective was all that was done by a handful of Assyriologists and Assyriologically competent historians of mathematics, while most Assyriologists lost interest completely, and historians of mathematics believed to possess the definitive truth about the topic in Neugebauer ’s popularizations.

Abstract:The present article continues an earlier analysis of occurrences of two algebraic unknowns in the writings of Fibonacci, Antonio de’ Mazzinghi, an anonymous Florentine abbacus writer from around 1400, Benedetto da Firenze and another anonymous Florentine writing some five years before Benedetto, and Luca Pacioli. The following article investigates how Benedetto da Firenze explores in 1463 the use of four or five algebraic unknowns in symbolic calculations, describing it afterwards in rhetorical algebra; in this way he thus provides a complete parallel to what was so far only known from Johannes Buteo’s Logistica from 1559. It also discusses why Benedetto may have seen his innovation as a merely marginal improvement compared to techniques known from Fibonacci’s Liber abbaci, therefore omitting to make explicit that he has created something new.

Abstract:Sophisticated computation methods were developed 4000 years ago in Mesopotamia in the context of scribal schools. The basics of the computation can be detected in clay tablets written by young students educated in these scribal schools. At first glance, the mathematical exercises contained in school tablets seem to be very simple and quite familiar, and therefore, they have little attracted the attention of historians of mathematics. Yet if we look more closely at these modest writings, their simplicity proves deceptive. The feeling of familiarity primarily results from a projection on to the past of thought patterns ingrained from our own early learning. Careful observation of school tablets reveals subtle differences between ancient and modern notions of number, quantity, measurement unit, order, divisibility, algorithm, etc. In fact, we find a completely original mathematical world with rules of its own. This article explores the computation practices developed in scholarly milieus in the light of the mathematical basics that was taught in elementary education.

Abstract:We reconsider Archimedes' evaluations of several square roots in 'Measurement of a Circle'. We show that several methods proposed over the last century or so for his evaluations fail one or more criteria of plausibility. We also provide internal evidence that he probably used an interpolation technique. The conclusions are relevant to the precise calculations by which he obtained upper and lower bounds on pi.

Abstract:In developed symbolic algebra, from Viète onward, the handling of several algebraic unknowns was routine. Before Luca Pacioli, on the other hand, the simultaneous manipulation of three algebraic unknowns was absent from European algebra and the use of two unknowns so rare that it has rarely been observed and never analyzed. The present paper analyzes the three occurrences of two algebraic unknowns in Fibonacci’s writings; the gradual unfolding of the idea in Antonio de’ Mazzinghi’s Fioretti; the distorted use in an anonymous Florentine algebra from ca 1400; and finally the regular appearance in the treatises of Benedetto da Firenze. It asks which of these appearances of the technique can be counted as independent rediscoveries of an idea present since long in Sanskrit and Arabic mathematics, and raises the question why the technique once it had been discovered was not cultivated – pointing to the line diagrams used by Fibonacci as a technique that was as efficient as rhetorical algebra handling two unknowns and much less cumbersome, at least until symbolic algebra developed, and as long as the most demanding problems with which algebra was confronted remained the traditional recreational challenges.

Abstract:Above is the title of the talk that Professor Ravindra Kulkarni asked me to give. It is a tall order as I am not a professionally trained historian, although I like to read history in my leisure. Naturally, I am more familiar with the mathematical achievements of China than of other countries. In reading through some of the writings by Western historians on mathematics, I am often surprised by the somewhat biased discussions towards the mathematical achievements of Asia. There is no question that the ancient Greeks made numerous fundamental contributions to mathematics, as we can see many of them in use in our present day. However, many of the Greek manuscripts were partially destroyed during the early centuries, and therefore, it takes great efforts to identify the form of the original manuscripts. The Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Moors all spent much efforts to translate and circulate the classic Greek manuscripts. Often, great ancient books incorporate a collection of many people’s works and were sometimes edited by a number of authors. Commenting on the Euclid’s Elements (believed to be written around 300 BC), the Greek mathematician Proclus of fifth century AD wrote: “Euclid, who put together the Elements, collecting many of Eudoxus’ theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetus’, and also bringing to irrefragable demonstration the things which were only somewhat loosely proved by his predecessors.” There are copies of Euclid’s Elements in Greek that are in the Vatican Library of the Holy See and the Bodleian Library of Oxford University. However, they are not complete and of variable quality. (See a fragment of the Elements from around 100 AD in Figure 1. Many hypotheses have been put forth on the contents of the original text based on translations and originals. Similarly, the origins of ancient Chinese books of mathematics such as the Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art are difficult to know for sure. Most likely, the Nine Chapters is an accumulation of works of many generations and was updated by many people. The recent discovery of an old book dated around 186 BC showed some form of the preliminary version of the Nine Chapters. There are several outstanding contributions in mathematics that appeared in different cultures. The most notable is the Pythagorean theorem. Pythagoras is believed to be born between 580 to 568 BC. This is not much later than the time when the Egyptian papyrus was introduced into Greece around 650 BC. It was said that he traveled to Egypt, Babylon and perhaps even India. Since there are ancient records of the Pythagorean triples in all these countries besides China, it is likely that Pythagoras learned the statement of his theorem from these countries. On the other hand, his great contribution is that he is the first one who proved the theorem. In fact, the concept of a proof based on formal logic found in Greek mathematics is rather unique as compared with other countries. It may be a mystery that countries far apart discovered the same theorem at different levels of depth.

Abstract:We examine prevailing philosophical and historical views about the origin of infinitesimal mathematics in light of modern infinitesimal theories, and show the works of Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, Cauchy and other giants of infinitesimal mathematics in a new light. We also detail several procedures of the historical infinitesimal calculus that were only clarified and formalized with the advent of modern infinitesimals. These procedures include Fermat's adequality; Leibniz's law of continuity and the transcendental law of homogeneity; Euler's principle of cancellation and infinite integers with the associated infinite products; Cauchy's infinitesimal-based definition of continuity and "Dirac" delta function. Such procedures were interpreted and formalized in Robinson's framework in terms of concepts like microcontinuity (S-continuity), the standard part principle, the transfer principle, and hyperfinite products. We evaluate the critiques of historical and modern infinitesimals by their foes from Berkeley and Cantor to Bishop and Connes. We analyze the issue of the consistency, as distinct from the issue of the rigor, of historical infinitesimals, and contrast the methodologies of Leibniz and Nieuwentijt in this connection.
