Abstract:Colloidal nanocrystals are solution-grown, nanometre-sized, inorganic particles that are stabilized by a layer of surfactants attached to their surface. The inorganic cores possess useful properties that are controlled by their composition, size and shape, and the surfactant coating ensures that these structures are easy to fabricate and process further into more complex structures. This combination of features makes colloidal nanocrystals attractive and promising building blocks for advanced materials and devices. Chemists are achieving ever more exquisite control over the composition, size, shape, crystal structure and surface properties of nanocrystals, thus setting the stage for fully exploiting the potential of these remarkable materials.

Abstract:All nanostructures share a common feature of large surface-to-volume ratio, which makes surface engineering a vital tool for exploring their new and important applications in many different areas. Particularly, inorganic nanostructures represent a class of intriguing catalysts that can find wide uses in energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. Here, a number of surface engineering strategies, including morphology control, defect incorporation, and interface manipulation for tailoring the shape, facet, defect, interfacial property, and composition of nanostructures, aiming at controlling the chemical and physical properties such as energy bandgap and surface energy toward great enhancement in catalytic performance, are discussed.

Abstract:The conjugation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with biomolecules could create many outstanding biofunctions for the surface-functionalized nanoparticles and extend their biomedical applications. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the surface bioengineering of AuNPs with biomolecules, such as DNA, proteins, peptides, and biopolymers, in which the details on the structure, functions, and properties of surface-bioengineered AuNPs are discussed. In addition, the surface-biofunctionalization of AuNPs for biomedical applications like biosensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, and tissue engineering are introduced. It is expected that this work will be very helpful for readers to understand the surface functionalization and engineering techniques for various metallic nanoparticles and design novel biomaterials for biomedical applications.

Abstract:In recent years, nanomaterials have attracted the research intervention of experts in the fields of catalysis, energy, biomedical testing, and biomedicine with their unrivaled optical, chemical, and biological properties. From basic metal and oxide nanoparticles to complex quantum dots and MOFs, the stable preparation of various nanomaterials has always been a struggle for researchers. Microfluidics, as a paradigm of microscale control, is a remarkable platform for online stable synthesis of nanomaterials with efficient mass and heat transfer in microreactors, flexible blending of reactants, and precise control of reaction conditions. We describe the process of microfluidic preparation of nanoparticles in the last 5 years in terms of microfluidic techniques and the methods of microfluidic manipulation of fluids. Then, the ability of microfluidics to prepare different nanomaterials, such as metals, oxides, quantum dots, and biopolymer nanoparticles, is presented. The effective synthesis of some nanomaterials with complex structures and the cases of nanomaterials prepared by microfluidics under extreme conditions (high temperature and pressure), the compatibility of microfluidics as a superior platform for the preparation of nanoparticles is demonstrated. Microfluidics has a potent integration capability to combine nanoparticle synthesis with real-time monitoring and online detection, which significantly improves the quality and production efficiency of nanoparticles, and also provides a high-quality ultra-clean platform for some bioassays.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis and surface engineering of inorganic nanomaterials hold great promise for the design of functional nanoparticles for a variety of applications, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, and catalysis. However, owing to the inadequate and unstable mass/heat transfer, conventional bulk synthesis methods often result in the poor uniformity of nanoparticles, in terms of microstructure, morphology, and physicochemical properties. Microfluidic technologies with advantageous features, such as precise fluid control and rapid microscale mixing, have gathered the widespread attention of the research community for the fabrication and engineering of nanomaterials, which effectively overcome the aforementioned shortcomings of conventional bench methods. This review summarizes the latest research progress in the microfluidic fabrication of different types of inorganic nanomaterials, including silica, metal, metal oxides, metal organic frameworks, and quantum dots. In addition, the surface modification strategies of nonporous and porous inorganic nanoparticles based on microfluidic method are also introduced. We also provide the readers with an insight on the red blocks and prospects of microfluidic approaches, for designing the next generation of inorganic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Janus colloids are functional particles consisting of two surfaces (or internal materials) with distinct physical or chemical properties in the same particle. Owing to their amphiphilic nature, Janus colloids composed of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic faces provide a powerful tool to generate functional surfaces and to manipulate the properties of interfaces. Amphiphilic Janus colloids have shown promising applications as particulate surfactants in oil/water separation, as interfacial compatibilizers in polymer blends, and as assembly blocks in robust coatings with unique wettability. In this Feature Article, we summarize recent advances in engineering interfaces by using Janus colloids.

Abstract:Functional core-shell mesoporous microspheres with integrated functions, controlled structure, and surface properties and morphologies have received increasing attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties. Herein, core-shell magnetic mesoporous materials with cauliflower-like morphology and tunable surface roughness have been synthesized through a kinetics-controlled interface co-assembly and deposition of mesostructured nanocomposites on Fe3O4@RF microspheres (RF refers to resorcinol formaldehyde resin). The obtained microspheres, synthesized via this interface nanoengineering method, possess well-defined sandwich structure with a tunable rough morphology, uniform size (560-1000 nm), perpendicularly aligned mesopores (∼5.7 nm) in the outer shell, RF-protected magnetic responsive core, high surface area up to 382 m2/g, and large pore volume of 0.66 cm3/g. As a result of the unique surface features and magnetic properties, these microspheres exhibit excellent performance in stabilizing and oxygen-free manipulating aqueous solutions in petroleum ether by a magnetic field. They also exhibit superior cell uptake properties compared with traditional smooth core-shell magnetic mesoporous silica microspheres, opening up the possible applications in fast drug delivery in cancer therapy.

Abstract:The recent convergence of nanomaterials and medicine has provided an expanding horizon for people to achieve encouraging advances in many biomedical applications such as cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, to realize desirable functions in the rather complex biological systems, a suitable surface coating is greatly in need for nanoparticles (NPs), regardless of the species. In this review, a recently developed surface modification strategy is highlighted-mixed-charge monolayers-with an emphasis on the nanointerfaces of inorganic NPs. Two typical mixed-charge gold NPs (AuNPs) prepared from surface modifications with different combinations of oppositely charged alkanethiols are shown as detailed examples to discuss how the mixed-charge monolayer can help NPs meet the criteria for in vitro and in vivo biomedical applications, including those critical issues like colloidal stability, nonfouling properties, and smart responses (pH-sensitivity) for tumor targeting.

Abstract:Significant advances in colloidal synthesis made in the past two decades have enabled the preparation of high quality nanoparticles with well-controlled sizes, shapes, and compositions. It has recently been realized that such nanoparticles can be utilized as 'artificial atoms' for building new materials which not only combine the size- and shape-dependent properties of individual nanoparticles but also create new collective properties by taking advantage of their electromagnetic interactions. The controlled clustering of nanoparticle building blocks into defined geometric arrangements opens a new research area in materials science and as a result much interest has been paid to the creation of secondary structures of nanoparticles, either by direct solution growth or self-assembly methods. In this tutorial review, we introduce recently developed strategies for the creation and surface modification of colloidal nanoparticle clusters, demonstrate the new collective properties resulting from their secondary structures, and highlight several of their many important technological applications ranging from photonics, separation, and detection, to multimodal imaging, energy storage and transformation, and catalysis.

Abstract:Nanotechnology makes it possible to intentionally modify the properties of surfaces and endow them with any desired function.Nanostructured surfaces, coatings, and films have represented important advances in control of wetting, adhesion, mechanical, thermal, magnetic, electrical, and optical properties and ability to direct cell behavior.A number of promising approaches to fabricate functional micro-and nanostructured surfaces, coatings, and films have been stimulated by opportunities to enhance the properties of surfaces and interfaces via the combination of surface structure, morphology, and physical and chemical properties.Such functional micro-and nanostructured surfaces, coatings, and films are playing an increasingly important part in a broad range of novel applications, such as energy, electronics, photonics, as well as sensor systems, advanced materials, and medical devices.This special issue features articles that cover a wide range of recent progress in design, fabrication, and characterization of innovative nanostructured surfaces with the aim of improving their surface properties and functional performance, as well as new insights on physical principles underlying their properties and enormous potential applications.Highlighted below are important contributions from this special issue.C. Abstract:Abstract Hybrid nanocrystals combining different properties together are important multifunctional materials that underpin further development in catalysis, energy storage, et al., and they are often constructed using heterogeneous seeded growth. Their spatial configuration (shape, composition, and dimension) is primarily determined by the heterogeneous deposition process which depends on the lattice mismatch between deposited material and seed. Precise control of nanocrystals spatial configuration is crucial to applications, but suffers from the limited tunability of lattice mismatch. Here, we demonstrate that surface lattice engineering can be used to break this bottleneck. Surface lattices of various Au nanocrystal seeds are fine-tuned using this strategy regardless of their shape, size, and crystalline structure, creating adjustable lattice mismatch for subsequent growth of other metals; hence, diverse hybrid nanocrystals with fine-tuned spatial configuration can be synthesized. This study may pave a general approach for rationally designing and constructing target nanocrystals including metal, semiconductor, and oxide.

Abstract:<p>Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), one of the important porous materials, have garnered interest owing to their highly attractive physicochemical features and advantageous morphological attributes. They are of particular importance for use in diverse fields including, but not limited to, adsorption, catalysis, and medicine. Despite their intrinsic stable siliceous frameworks, excellent mechanical strength, and optimal morphological attributes, pristine MSNs suffer from poor drug loading efficiency, as well as compatibility and degradability issues for therapeutic, diagnostic, and tissue engineering purposes. Collectively, the desirable and beneficial properties of MSNs have been harnessed by modifying the surface of the siliceous frameworks through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species, and through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species and their conjugates. Substantial advancements of these innovative colloidal inorganic nanocontainers drive researchers in promoting them toward innovative applications like stimuli (light/ultrasound/magnetic)‐responsive delivery‐associated therapies with exceptional performance in vivo. Here, a brief overview of the fabrication of siliceous frameworks, along with discussions on the significant advances in engineering of MSNs, is provided. The scope of the advancement in terms of structural and physicochemical attributes and their effects on biomedical applications with a particular focus on recent studies is emphasized. Finally, interesting perspectives are recapitulated, along with the scope toward clinical translation.</p>

Abstract:The ability to engineer surface properties of nanocrystals (NCs) is important for various applications, as many of the physical and chemical properties of nanoscale materials are strongly affected by the surface chemistry. Here, we report a facile ligand-exchange approach, which enables sequential surface functionalization and phase transfer of colloidal NCs while preserving the NC size and shape. Nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate (NOBF4) is used to replace the original organic ligands attached to the NC surface, stabilizing the NCs in various polar, hydrophilic media such as N,N-dimethylformamide for years, with no observed aggregation or precipitation. This approach is applicable to various NCs (metal oxides, metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics) of different sizes and shapes. The hydrophilic NCs obtained can subsequently be further functionalized using a variety of capping molecules, imparting different surface functionalization to NCs depending on the molecules employed. Our work provides a versatile ligand-exchange strategy for NC surface functionalization and represents an important step toward controllably engineering the surface properties of NCs.
