Abstract:Recently, due to the novel spin structures and unique magnetic states, the magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, especially monolayer or few-layer inorganic ultrathin nanosheets, exhibit great promise for the next-generation spintronics. As is known, practical application usually requires materials with magnetic properties which can be deliberately regulated by external control parameters, such as, applied electric fields, elastic stress or light. However, most of the 2D inorganic nanomaterials are intrinsically non-magnetic. To tackle this challenge, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to effectively tuning the magnetic properties of two-dimensional nanomaterials, such as, transitional metal atoms doping and point defects, which provide feasible ways of magnetic modulation to induce magnetism. Unfortunately, compared with the high demands of practical magnetic application, there is still way to inducing magnetism in two-dimensional nanomaterials in a precise and controlled manner. In this regard, how to effectively obtain magnetic two-nanomaterials remains a great but noteworthy challenge. Atomic-scale-thickness 2D nanomaterials possess extremely large specific surface area, making their surface phase as important as bulk counterparts. Compared to bulk counterparts, the ultrathin nanosheets with outmost atom layers exposed are more vulnerable to the surface modification, which has been theoretically and experimentally confirmed. Therefore, surface chemical modification of inorganic 2D nanomaterials offers a novel way to engineer intrinsic magnetic properties of 2D nanomaterials. Furthermore, the exposed high specific surface area and quantum confinement of electrons in the two-dimensional nanomaterials endow the surface chemical modification strategies to regulate the intrinsic magnetic properties in a controllable and precise manner. In this review, we focus on recent research about regulation strategies of magnetic behaviors, especially concerning surface chemical modification strategies, which bring about novel magnetic inorganic two-dimensional materials. For instance, introducing hydrogen dangling bonds into graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets successfully inducing ferromagnetism; surface adsorption of hydrazine molecules onto two-dimensional NbSe2 nanosheets triggering the distortion of Nb-Se covalent bond, which results in the spin polarization; surface molecules meditating synthesis of ultrathin VSe2 nanosheets which display ferromagnetism and charge density wave. Benefiting from regulated magnetic properties, inorganic two-dimensional nanomaterials deliver promising magnetic energy conversion and magnetic response applications, which ranges from the giant magnetoresistance, magnetocaloric effect to efficiently hydrogen evolution. Surface-chemical modification of two-dimensional nanomaterials has seen the advance for regulating their intrinsic magnetic properties.

Abstract:Low-dimensional heterostructured functional materials have been widely applied in new energy materials, catalysts, et al. However, to enhance photo-response in visible light and the biocompatibility improvement are still the great challenges faced. And the dendrimers act good roles in transferring the drug and gene, and has good biocompatibility. Self-assembly on the surface of low-dimensional heterostructured functional materials with dendrimers holding-COOH groups was carried out in this paper. The characterizations of the materials were examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and so on. The photoconductivity response to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate. The results indicated that ZnO/CuS modified with dendrimers showed good photo-response to visible light and 808 nm laser, the photo-response properties enhanced greatly by adding some small amount of grapheme oxide. Photocatalytic efficiency was examined by selecting typical organic pollutants, some good results were obtained. The external stimuli driven nanorobots for removal the organic pollutants or toxins in the living body have been developed.

Abstract:The advent of graphene opens up the research into two-dimensional (2D) materials, which are considered revolutionary materials. Due to its unique geometric structure, graphene exhibits a series of exotic physical and chemical properties. In addition, single-element-based 2D materials (Xenes) have garnered tremendous interest. At present, 16 kinds of Xenes (silicene, borophene, germanene, phosphorene, tellurene, etc.) have been explored, mainly distributed in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth main groups. The current methods to prepare monolayers or few-layer 2D materials include epitaxy growth, mechanical exfoliation, and liquid phase exfoliation. Although two Xenes (aluminene and indiene) have not been synthesized due to the limitations of synthetic methods and the stability of Xenes, other Xenes have been successfully created via elaborate artificial design and synthesis. Focusing on elemental 2D materials, this review mainly summarizes the recently reported work about tuning the electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties of Xenes via surface modifications, achieved using controllable approaches (doping, adsorption, strain, intercalation, phase transition, etc.) to broaden their applications in various fields, including spintronics, electronics, optoelectronics, superconducting, photovoltaics, sensors, catalysis, and biomedicines. These advances in the surface modification of Xenes have laid a theoretical and experimental foundation for the development of 2D materials and their practical applications in diverse fields.

Here, a number of surface engineering strategies, including morphology control, defect incorporation, and interface manipulation for tailoring the shape, facet, defect, interfacial property, and composition of nanostructures, aiming at controlling the chemical and physical properties such as energy bandgap and surface energy toward great enhancement in catalytic performance, are discussed.

Abstract:The electron-electron correlation in low-dimensional inorganic solid materials leads to many novel phase transition behaviors, such as metal-insulator transition, superconductivity, charge density wave and giant magnetoresistance effect, etc. Adjusting parameters by external fields can change the equilibrium relationship between ordered phases, realize the phase transition between different competing phases, and induce new physical properties and even new quantum critical phenomena. These phase-transition materials have great potential to be used in advanced electronic components and smart response devices in the future. It is known that low-dimensional inorganic phase-transition solids have large specific surface area and electronic correlation effects. Surface chemical modification opens up a new research space for the regulation of their phase transitions and complex interactions, which is not only helpful to explore physical laws and new quantum orders of low-dimensional correlated electron systems, but also of great significance to understand the microscopic origin of these complex physical phenomena. In this review, we focus on a series of recent advances about the regulation of phase transitions of low-dimensional inorganic solids by surface chemical modification strategies, and investigate their smart response to external light and magnetism under the limited dimension.

Abstract:Research on 2D nanomaterials is rising to an unprecedented height and will continue to remain a very important topic in materials science. In parallel with the discovery of new candidate materials and exploration of their unique characteristics, there are intensive interests to rationally control and tune the properties of 2D nanomaterials in a predictable manner. Considerable attention is focused on modifying these materials structurally or engineering them into designed architectures to meet requirements for specific applications. Recent advances in such structural engineering strategies have demonstrated their ability to overcome current material limitations, showing great promise for promoting device performance to a new level in many energy-related applications. Existing in many forms, these strategies can be categorized based on how they intrinsically or extrinsically alter the pristine structure. Achieved through various synthetic routes and practiced in a range of different material systems, they usually share common descriptors that predestine them to be effective in certain circumstances. Therefore, understanding the underlying mechanism of these strategies to provide fundamental insights into structural design and property tailoring is of critical importance. Here, the most recent development of structural engineering of 2D nanomaterials and their significant effects in energy storage and catalysis technologies are addressed.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis and surface engineering of inorganic nanomaterials hold great promise for the design of functional nanoparticles for a variety of applications, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, and catalysis. However, owing to the inadequate and unstable mass/heat transfer, conventional bulk synthesis methods often result in the poor uniformity of nanoparticles, in terms of microstructure, morphology, and physicochemical properties. Microfluidic technologies with advantageous features, such as precise fluid control and rapid microscale mixing, have gathered the widespread attention of the research community for the fabrication and engineering of nanomaterials, which effectively overcome the aforementioned shortcomings of conventional bench methods. This review summarizes the latest research progress in the microfluidic fabrication of different types of inorganic nanomaterials, including silica, metal, metal oxides, metal organic frameworks, and quantum dots. In addition, the surface modification strategies of nonporous and porous inorganic nanoparticles based on microfluidic method are also introduced. We also provide the readers with an insight on the red blocks and prospects of microfluidic approaches, for designing the next generation of inorganic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Engineering the electronic structure of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials endows unique physical and chemical properties. Although developed modification strategies have significantly expanded the applications of 2D nanomaterials, exploring new strategies to regulate the electronic structure of 2D nanomaterials is also expected. Herein, we highlight a new strategy to engineer the electronic structure of 2D subnanoporous nanomaterials. As a proof of concept, based on controllable subnanopore engineering using molecular titanium-oxide incorporation, the electronic band structure of 2D graphitic carbon nitride (CN) nanosheets has been efficiently tuned with the enhancement of visible light absorption as well as separation and the migration rate of photo-excited charge carriers, exhibiting significantly improved photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Our work opens a new door to engineering the intrinsic properties of 2D subnanoporous nanomaterials.

Abstract:Precise control of the electronic surface states of two-dimensional (2D) materials could improve their versatility and widen their applicability in electronics and sensing. To this end, chemical surface functionalization has been used to adjust the electronic properties of 2D materials. So far, however, chemical functionalization has relied on lattice defects and physisorption methods that inevitably modify the topological characteristics of the atomic layers. Here we make use of the lone pair electrons found in most of 2D metal chalcogenides and report a functionalization method via a Lewis acid-base reaction that does not alter the host structure. Atomic layers of n-type InSe react with Ti(4+) to form planar p-type [Ti(4+)n(InSe)] coordination complexes. Using this strategy, we fabricate planar p-n junctions on 2D InSe with improved rectification and photovoltaic properties, without requiring heterostructure growth procedures or device fabrication processes. We also show that this functionalization approach works with other Lewis acids (such as B(3+), Al(3+) and Sn(4+)) and can be applied to other 2D materials (for example MoS2, MoSe2). Finally, we show that it is possible to use Lewis acid-base chemistry as a bridge to connect molecules to 2D atomic layers and fabricate a proof-of-principle dye-sensitized photosensing device.

Abstract:This feature article reviews some strategies and realizations for manipulating and tailoring the physical and chemical properties of zero dimensional (0-D) and one dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials as well as reveals the underlying mechanism. A series of high-resolution characterization techniques, such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM), conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM), and spatially resolved cathodoluminescence (CL), have been used in this study, which enable us to investigate the morphologies, structures and properties of individual nanomaterials experimentally. Some theoretical quantum chemistry methods such as tightbinding (TB) and density functional theory (DFT) are also applied for better understanding the experimental phenomena. Our results demonstrate that deliberate control at atomic and molecular scale, such as fabricating ordered and disordered metal nanoparticles, growing designed heterostructures, doping or grafting single molecules, and changing geometry (e. g., aspect ratio, tip sharpness, size, and surface ratio), can dramatically tailor the properties of the 0-D and 1-D nanomaterials. The results shown here can be extended to various nanomaterials and nanodevices, and therefore are useful for versatile applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are of great interest due to wide range applications, especially in nanomedicine. However, they face challenges preventing their further applications such as rapid agglomeration, oxidation, etc. Appropriate surface modification of IONPs can conquer these barriers with improved physicochemical properties. This review summarizes recent advances in the surface modification of IONPs with small organic molecules, polymers and inorganic materials. The preparation methods, mechanisms and applications of surface-modified IONPs with different materials are discussed. Finally, the technical barriers of IONPs and their limitations in practical applications are pointed out, and the development trends and prospects are discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and black phosphorus (BP) have beneficial electronic, optical, and physical properties at the few-layer limit. As atomically thin materials, 2D TMDCs and BP are highly sensitive to their environment and chemical modification, resulting in a strong dependence of their properties on substrate effects, intrinsic defects, and extrinsic adsorbates. Furthermore, the integration of 2D semiconductors into electronic and optoelectronic devices introduces unique challenges at metal-semiconductor and dielectric-semiconductor interfaces. Here, we review emerging efforts to understand and exploit chemical effects to influence the properties of 2D TMDCs and BP. In some cases, surface chemistry leads to significant degradation, thus necessitating the development of robust passivation schemes. On the other hand, appropriately designed chemical modification can be used to beneficially tailor electronic properties, such as controlling doping levels and charge carrier concentrations. Overall, chemical methods allow substantial tunability of the properties of 2D TMDCs and BP, thereby enabling significant future opportunities to optimize performance for device applications.

Abstract:Solution-based routes have been widely applied in the synthesis of nanostructures. It is desirable to choose or design precursors, ligands, and solvent molecules at the molecular level to allow the synthesis of low-dimensional nanocrystals with various shapes and sizes. The increasing requirements for the integration of the properties of nanocrystals have produced a high demand for the rational design and fine control of complex structures, in terms of both the composition and the structure. To meet this demand, researchers have developed new synthetic strategies to produce more complex and more functional nanocrystals. Typical procedures involve systematic engineering, which focuses on the whole synthetic procedure, instead of just the molecular details. This review focuses mainly on the work of Yadong Li's group over the last decade.

Abstract:Due to its unique electronic structure and special size effect, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have shown great potential far beyond bulk materials in the field of photocatalysis. How to deeply explore the photocatalytic mechanism of 2D nanomaterials and design more efficient 2D semiconductor photocatalysts are research hotspots. This review provides a comprehensive introduction to typical 2D nanomaterials and discusses their current application status in the field of photocatalysis. The effects of material properties such as band structure, morphology, crystal face structure, crystal structure and surface defects on the photocatalytic process are discussed. The main modification methods are highlighted, including doping, noble metal deposition, heterojunction, thickness adjustment, defect engineering, and dye sensitization in 2D material systems. Finally, the future development of 2D nanomaterials is prospected. It is hoped that this paper can provide systematic and useful information for researchers engaged in the field of photocatalysis.
