Abstract:We count the asymptotic number of triangles in uniform random graphs where the degree distribution follows a power law with degree exponent $\tau\in(2,3)$. We also analyze the local clustering coefficient $c(k)$, the probability that two random neighbors of a vertex of degree $k$ are connected. We find that the number of triangles, as well as the local clustering coefficient, scale similarly as in the erased configuration model, where all self-loops and multiple edges of the configuration model are removed. Interestingly, uniform random graphs contain more triangles than erased configuration models with the same degree sequence. The number of triangles in uniform random graphs is closely related to that in a version of the rank-1 inhomogeneous random graph, where all vertices are equipped with weights, and the probabilities that edges are present are moderated by asymptotically linear functions of the products of these vertex weights.

Abstract:Let N be the number of triangles in an Erdős–Rényi graph on n vertices with edge density where is a fixed constant. It is well known that N weakly converges to the Poisson distribution with mean as . We address the upper tail problem for N , namely, we investigate how fast k must grow, so that is not well approximated anymore by the tail of the corresponding Poisson variable. Proving that the tail exhibits a sharp phase transition, we essentially show that the upper tail is governed by Poisson behavior only when (sub-critical regime) as well as pin down the tail behavior when (super-critical regime). We further prove a structure theorem, showing that the sub-critical upper tail behavior is dictated by the appearance of almost k vertex-disjoint triangles whereas in the supercritical regime, the excess triangles arise from a clique like structure of size approximately . This settles the long-standing upper-tail problem in this case, answering a question of Aldous, complementing a long sequence of works, spanning multiple decades and culminating in Harel et al. (Duke Math J 171(10):2089–2192, 2022), which analyzed the problem only in the regime The proofs rely on several novel graph theoretical results which could have other applications.

Moderate deviations of triangle counts in sparse Erdős-Rényi random graphs $G(n,m)$ and $G(n,p)$

Abstract:We consider the question of determining the probability of triangle count deviations in the Erdős-Rényi random graphs $G(n,m)$ and $G(n,p)$ with densities larger than $n^{-1/2}(\log{n})^{1/2}$. In particular, we determine the log probability $\log\mathbb{P}(N_{\triangle}(G)\, >\, (1+\delta)p^3n^3)$ up to a constant factor across essentially the entire range of possible deviations, in both the $G(n,m)$ and $G(n,p)$ model. For the $G(n,p)$ model we also prove a stronger result, up to a $(1+o(1))$ factor, in the non-localised regime. We also obtain some results for the lower tail and for counts of cherries (paths of length $2$).

Local central limit theorem for triangle counts in sparse random graphs

Abstract:Let $X_H$ be the number of copies of a fixed graph $H$ in $G(n,p)$. In 2016, Gilmer and Kopparty conjectured that a local central limit theorem should hold for $X_H$ as long as $H$ is connected, $p \gg n^{-1/m(H)}$ and $n^2(1-p)\gg 1$. Recently, Sah and Sahwney showed that the Gilmer--Kopparty conjecture holds for constant $p$. In this paper, we show that the Gilmer--Kopparty conjecture holds for triangle counts in the sparse range. More precisely, if $p \in (4n^{-1/2}, 1/2)$, then \[\sup_{x\in \mathcal{L}}\left| \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}}e^{-x^2/2}-\sigma\cdot \mathbb{P}(X^* = x)\right|=n^{-1/2+o(1)}p^{1/2},\] where $\sigma^2 = \mathbb{V}\text{ar}(X_{K_3})$, $X^{*}=(X_{K_3}-\mathbb{E}(X_{K_3}))/\sigma$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is the support of $X^*$. By combining our result with the results of Röllin--Ross and Gilmer--Kopparty, this establishes the Gilmer--Kopparty conjecture for triangle counts for $n^{-1}\ll p < c$, for any constant $c\in (0,1)$. Our quantitative result is enough to prove that the triangle counts converge to an associated normal distribution also in the $\ell_1$-distance. This is the first local central limit theorem for subgraph counts above the $m_2$-density.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a fixed graph and $\mathcal{G}$ a subcritical graph class. In this paper we show that the number of occurrences of $H$ (as a subgraph) in a uniformly at random graph of size $n$ in $\mathcal{G}$ follows a normal limiting distribution with linear expectation and variance. The main ingredient in our proof is the analytic framework developed by Drmota, Gittenberger and Morgenbesser to deal with infinite systems of functional equations. As a case study, we get explicit expressions for the number of triangles and cycles of length four for the family of series-parallel graphs.

Finding irregular subgraphs via local adjustments

Abstract:For a graph $H$, let $m(H,k)$ denote the number of vertices of degree $k$ in $H$. A conjecture of Alon and Wei states that for any $d\geq 3$, every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph contains a spanning subgraph $H$ satisfying $|m(H,k)-\frac{n}{d+1}|\leq 2$ for every $0\leq k \leq d$. This holds easily when $d\leq 2$. An asymptotic version of this conjecture was initially established by Frieze, Gould, Karoński and Pfender, subsequently improved by Alon and Wei, and most recently enhanced by Fox, Luo and Pham, approaching its complete range. All of these approaches relied on probabilistic methods. In this paper, we provide a novel framework to study this conjecture, based on localized deterministic techniques which we call local adjustments. We prove two main results. Firstly, we show that every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph contains a spanning subgraph $H$ satisfying $|m(H,k)-\frac{n}{d+1}|\leq 2d^2$ for all $0\leq k \leq d$, which provides the first bound independent of the value of $n$. Secondly, we confirm the case $d=3$ of the Alon-Wei Conjecture in a strong form. Both results can be generalized to multigraphs and yield efficient algorithms for finding the desired subgraphs $H$. Furthermore, we explore a generalization of the Alon-Wei Conjecture for multigraphs and its connection to the Faudree-Lehel Conjecture concerning irregularity strength.

Lower tails for triangles inside the critical window

Abstract:We study the probability that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is triangle-free. When $p =o(n^{-1/2})$ or $p = \omega(n^{-1/2})$ the asymptotics of the logarithm of this probability are known via Janson's inequality in the former case and via regularity or hypergraph container methods in the latter case. We prove for the first time an asymptotic formula for the logarithm of this probability when $p = c n^{-1/2}$ for $c$ a sufficiently small constant. More generally, we study lower-tail large deviations for triangles in random graphs: the probability that $G(n,p)$ has at most $\eta$ times its expected number of triangles, when $p = c n^{-1/2}$ for $c$ and $\eta \in [0,1)$ constant. Our results apply for all $c$ if $\eta \ge .4993$ and for $c$ small enough otherwise. For $\eta$ small (including the case of triangle-freeness), we prove that a phase transition occurs as $c$ varies, in the sense of a non-analyticity of the rate function, while for $\eta \ge .4993$ we prove that no phase transition occurs. On the other hand for the random graph $G(n,m)$, with $m = b n^{3/2}$, we show that a phase transition occurs in the lower-tail problem for triangles as $b$ varies for \emph{every} $\eta \in [0,1)$. Our method involves ingredients from algorithms and statistical physics including the cluster expansion and concentration inequalities for contractive Markov chains.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a precise estimate of the probability that the sparse binomial random graph contains a large number of vertices in a triangle. The estimate of log of this probability is correct up to second order, and enables us to propose an exponential random graph model based on the number of vertices in a triangle. Specifically, by tuning a single parameter, we can with high probability induce any given fraction of vertices in a triangle. Moreover, in the proposed exponential random graph model we derive the large deviation principle for the number of edges. As a byproduct, we propose a consistent estimator of the tuning parameter.

Abstract:Extending a previous result of the first two authors, we prove a local limit theorem for the joint distribution of subgraph counts in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$. This limit can be described as a nonlinear transformation of a multivariate normal distribution, where the components of the multivariate normal correspond to the graph factors of Janson. As an application, we show a number of results concerning the existence and enumeration of proportional graphs and related concepts, answering various questions of Janson and collaborators in the affirmative.

Abstract:We conjecture that the distribution of the edge-disjoint union of two random regular graphs on the same vertex set is asymptotically equivalent to a random regular graph of the combined degree, provided it grows as the number of vertices tends to infinity. We verify this conjecture for the cases when the graphs are sufficiently dense or sparse. We also prove an asymptotic formula for the expected number of spanning regular subgraphs in a random regular graph.

Abstract:What is the probability that a random triangle is acute? We explore this old question from a modern viewpoint, taking into account linear algebra, shape theory, numerical analysis, random matrix theory, the Hopf fibration, and much much more. One of the best distributions of random triangles takes all six vertex coordinates as independent standard Gaussians. Six can be reduced to four by translation of the center to $(0,0)$ or reformulation as a 2x2 matrix problem. In this note, we develop shape theory in its historical context for a wide audience. We hope to encourage other to look again (and differently) at triangles. We provide a new constructive proof, using the geometry of parallelians, of a central result of shape theory: Triangle shapes naturally fall on a hemisphere. We give several proofs of the key random result: that triangles are uniformly distributed when the normal distribution is transferred to the hemisphere. A new proof connects to the distribution of random condition numbers. Generalizing to higher dimensions, we obtain the "square root ellipticity statistic" of random matrix theory. Another proof connects the Hopf map to the SVD of 2 by 2 matrices. A new theorem describes three similar triangles hidden in the hemisphere. Many triangle properties are reformulated as matrix theorems, providing insight to both. This paper argues for a shift of viewpoint to the modern approaches of random matrix theory. As one example, we propose that the smallest singular value is an effective test for uniformity. New software is developed and applications are proposed.

Large deviations for triangles in scale-free random graphs

Abstract:We provide large deviations estimates for the upper tail of the number of triangles in scale-free inhomogeneous random graphs where the degrees have power law tails with index $-\alpha, \alpha \in (1,2)$. We show that upper tail probabilities for triangles undergo a phase transition. For $\alpha<4/3$, the upper tail is caused by many vertices of degree of order $n$, and this probability is semi-exponential. In this regime, additional triangles consist of two hubs. For $\alpha>4/3$ on the other hand, the upper tail is caused by one hub of a specific degree, and this probability decays polynomially in $n$, leading to additional triangles with one hub. In the intermediate case $\alpha=4/3$, we show polynomial decay of the tail probability caused by multiple but finitely many hubs. In this case, the additional triangles contain either a single hub or two hubs. Our proofs are partly based on various concentration inequalities. In particular, we tailor concentration bounds for empirical processes to make them well-suited for analyzing heavy-tailed phenomena in nonlinear settings.

Abstract:In a previous paper we showed that a random 4-regular graph asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) has chromatic number 3. Here we extend the method to show that a random 6-regular graph asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) has chromatic number 4 and that the chromatic number of a random d-regular graph for other d between 5 and 10 inclusive is a.a.s. restricted to a range of two integer values: {3, 4} for d = 5, {4, 5} for d = 7, 8, 9, and {5, 6} for d = 10. The proof uses efficient algorithms which a.a.s. colour these random graphs using the number of colours specified by the upper bound. These algorithms are analysed using the differential equation method, including an analysis of certain systems of differential equations with discontinuous right-hand sides.
Counting triangles in regular graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the minimum number of triangles, denoted by $t(n,k)$, in $n$-vertex $k$-regular graphs, where $n$ is an odd integer and $k$ is an even integer. The well-known Andrásfai-Erdős-Sós Theorem has established that $t(n,k)>0$ if $k>\frac{2n}{5}$. In a striking work, Lo has provided the exact value of $t(n,k)$ for sufficiently large $n$, given that $\frac{2n}{5}+\frac{12\sqrt{n}}{5}<k<\frac{n}{2}$. Here, we bridge the gap between the aforementioned results by determining the precise value of $t(n,k)$ in the entire range $\frac{2n}{5}<k<\frac{n}{2}$. This confirms a conjecture of Cambie, de Joannis de Verclos, and Kang for sufficiently large $n$.

Abstract:We prove that the number of perfect matchings in ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ is asymptotically normal when $n$ is even, $d\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$, and $d=O(n^{1/7}/\log^2 n)$. This is the first distributional result of spanning subgraphs of ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ when $d\to\infty$. Moreover, we prove that ${\mathcal G}(n,d-1)$ and ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ can be coupled so that ${\mathcal G}(n,d-1)$ is a subgraph of ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ with high probability when $d\to\infty$ and $d=o(n^{1/3})$. Further, if $d=\Omega(\log^7 n)$, $d=O(n^{1/7}/\log^2n)$, and $d\le d'\le n-1$ then ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ and ${\mathcal G}(n,d')$ can be coupled so that asymptotically almost surely ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ is a subgraph of ${\mathcal G}(n,d')$.

Abstract:We determine the asymptotics of the independence number of the random $d$-regular graph for all $d \ge d_0$. It is highly concentrated, with constant-order fluctuations around $n\alpha_* - c_*\log n$ for explicit constants $\alpha_*(d)$ and $c_*(d)$. Our proof rigorously confirms the one-step replica symmetry breaking heuristics for this problem, and we believe the techniques will be more broadly applicable to the study of other combinatorial properties of random graphs.

Abstract:We study the following combinatorial counting and sampling problems: can we efficiently sample from the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ conditioned on triangle-freeness? Can we efficiently approximate the probability that $G(n,p)$ is triangle-free? These are prototypical instances of forbidden substructure problems ubiquitous in combinatorics. The algorithmic questions are instances of approximate counting and sampling for a hypergraph hard-core model. Estimating the probability that $G(n,p)$ has no triangles is a fundamental question in probabilistic combinatorics and one that has led to the development of many important tools in the field. Through the work of several authors, the asymptotics of the logarithm of this probability are known if $p =o( n^{-1/2})$ or if $p =\omega( n^{-1/2})$. The regime $p = \Theta(n^{-1/2})$ is more mysterious, as this range witnesses a dramatic change in the the typical structural properties of $G(n,p)$ conditioned on triangle-freeness. As we show, this change in structure has a profound impact on the performance of sampling algorithms. We give two different efficient sampling algorithms for triangle-free graphs (and complementary algorithms to approximate the triangle-freeness large deviation probability), one that is efficient when $p < c/\sqrt{n}$ and one that is efficient when $p > C/\sqrt{n}$ for constants $c, C>0$. The latter algorithm involves a new approach for dealing with large defects in the setting of sampling from low-temperature spin models.

Abstract:Given a graph $G$ and $p\in [0,1]$, the random subgraph $G_p$ is obtained by retaining each edge of $G$ independently with probability $p$. We show that for every $\epsilon>0$, there exists a constant $C>0$ such that the following holds. Let $d\ge C$ be an integer, let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph and let $p\ge \frac{C}{d}$. Then, with probability tending to one as $|V(G)|$ tends to infinity, there exists a matching in $G_p$ covering at least $(1-\epsilon)|V(G)|$ vertices. Abstract:We study several basic problems about colouring the $p$-random subgraph $G_p$ of an arbitrary graph $G$, focusing primarily on the chromatic number and colouring number of $G_p$. In particular, we show that there exist infinitely many $k$-regular graphs $G$ for which the colouring number (i.e., degeneracy) of $G_{1/2}$ is at most $k/3 + o(k)$ with high probability, thus disproving the natural prediction that such random graphs must have colouring number at least $k/2 - o(k)$.
