Abstract:Rationalizability and similar notions of consistency have proved to be highly problematic in the context of social choice, as witnessed by a range of impossibility results, among which Arrowʼs is the most prominent. We propose to rationalize choice functions by preference relations over sets of alternatives (set-rationalizability) and introduce two consistency conditions, αˆ and γˆ, which are defined in analogy to Senʼs α and γ. We find that a choice function satisfies αˆ if and only if it is set-rationalizable and that it satisfies αˆ and γˆ if and only if it is self-stable, a new concept based on earlier work by Dutta. The class of self-stable social choice functions contains a number of appealing Condorcet extensions.

On Locally Rationalizable Social Choice Functions

Abstract:We consider a notion of rationalizability, where the rationalizing relation may depend on the set of feasible alternatives. More precisely, we say that a choice function is locally rationalizable if it is rationalized by a family of rationalizing relations such that a strict preference between two alternatives in some feasible set is preserved when removing other alternatives. Tyson (2008) has shown that a choice function is locally rationalizable if and only if it satisfies Sen's $\gamma$. We expand the theory of local rationalizability by proposing a natural strengthening of $\gamma$ that precisely characterizes local rationalizability via PIP-transitive relations and by introducing the $\gamma$-hull of a choice function as its finest coarsening that satisfies $\gamma$. Local rationalizability permits a unified perspective on social choice functions that satisfy $\gamma$, including classic ones such as the top cycle and the uncovered set as well as new ones such as two-stage majoritarian choice and split cycle. We give simple axiomatic characterizations of some of these using local rationalizability and propose systematic procedures to define social choice functions that satisfy $\gamma$.

Abstract:This paper studies how violations of structural assumptions like expected utility and exponential discounting can be connected to basic rationality violations, even though these assumptions are typically regarded as independent building blocks in decision theory. A reference-dependent generalization of behavioral postulates captures preference shifts in various choice domains. When reference points are fixed, canonical models hold; otherwise, reference-dependent preference parameters (e.g., CARA coefficients, discount factors) give rise to "non-standard" behavior. The framework allows us to study risk, time, and social preferences collectively, where seemingly independent anomalies are interconnected through the lens of reference-dependent choice.

Abstract:The paper studies complementary choice functions, i.e. monotonic and consistent choice functions. Such choice functions were introduced and used in the work \cite{RY} for investigation of matchings with complementary contracts. Three (universal) ways of constructing such functions are given: through pre-topologies, as direct images of completely complementary (or pre-ordered) choice functions, and with the help of supermodular set-functions.

Abstract:The dominant theories of rational choice assume logical omniscience. That is, they assume that when facing a decision problem, an agent can perform all relevant computations and determine the truth value of all relevant logical/mathematical claims. This assumption is unrealistic when, for example, we offer bets on remote digits of pi or when an agent faces a computationally intractable planning problem. Furthermore, the assumption of logical omniscience creates contradictions in cases where the environment can contain descriptions of the agent itself. Importantly, strategic interactions as studied in game theory are decision problems in which a rational agent is predicted by its environment (the other players). In this paper, we develop a theory of rational decision making that does not assume logical omniscience. We consider agents who repeatedly face decision problems (including ones like betting on digits of pi or games against other agents). The main contribution of this paper is to provide a sensible theory of rationality for such agents. Roughly, we require that a boundedly rational inductive agent tests each efficiently computable hypothesis infinitely often and follows those hypotheses that keep their promises of high rewards. We then prove that agents that are rational in this sense have other desirable properties. For example, they learn to value random and pseudo-random lotteries at their expected reward. Finally, we consider strategic interactions between different agents and prove a folk theorem for what strategies bounded rational inductive agents can converge to.

Extending choice assessments to choice functions: An algorithm for computing the natural extension

Abstract:We study how to infer new choices from prior choices using the framework of choice functions, a unifying mathematical framework for decision-making based on sets of preference orders. In particular, we define the natural (most conservative) extension of a given choice assessment to a coherent choice function -- whenever possible -- and use this natural extension to make new choices. We provide a practical algorithm for computing this natural extension and various ways to improve scalability. Finally, we test these algorithms for different types of choice assessments.

It is argued that ties among rational choices can be resolved by refinements of the concept of rationality based on the utilities of other players. One such refinement is the concept of Tit-for-Tat.

Abstract:This paper aims to connect epistemic and behavioral game theory by examining the epistemic foundations of quantal response equilibrium (QRE) in static games. We focus on how much information agents possess about the probability distributions of idiosyncratic payoff shocks, in addition to the standard assumptions of rationality and common belief in rationality. When these distributions are transparent, we obtain a solution concept called $\Delta^p$-rationalizability, which includes action distributions derived from QRE; we also give a condition under which this relationship holds true in reverse. When agents only have common belief in the monotonicity of these distributions (for example, extreme value distributions), we obtain another solution concept called $\Delta^M$-rationalizability, which includes action distributions derived from rank-dependent choice equilibrium, a parameter-free variant of QRE. Our solution concepts also provide insights for interpreting experimental and empirical data.

Abstract:An extensive choice over X is a function assigning to any subset S of X a possibly empty subset of S . Klamler (Soc Choice Welf 30:419–425, 2008) shows that the operation of symmetric difference induces a metric on the family of extensive choices over X , and this metric is characterized by five axioms A1 – A5 . We provide counterexamples to Klamler's result, suggest a slight modification of axioms A4 and A5 to obtain a correct characterization, and finally observe that axiom A4 is redundant.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a normative approach to modeling apparently human irrational decision making (cognitive biases) that makes use of inherently rational computational mechanisms. We view preferential choice tasks as sequential decision making problems and formulate them as Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs). The resulting sequential decision model learns what information to gather about which options, whether to calculate option values or make comparisons between options and when to make a choice. We apply the model to choice problems where context is known to influence human choice, an effect that has been taken as evidence that human cognition is irrational. Our results show that the new model approximates a bounded optimal cognitive policy and makes quantitative predictions that correspond well to evidence about human choice. Furthermore, the model uses context to help infer which option has a maximum expected value while taking into account computational cost and cognitive limits. In addition, it predicts when, and explains why, people stop evidence accumulation and make a decision. We argue that the model provides evidence that apparent human irrationalities are emergent consequences of processes that prefer higher value (rational) policies.

Abstract:In "Extensional realizability for intuitionistic set theory", we introduced an extensional variant of generic realizability, where realizers act extensionally on realizers, and showed that this form of realizability provides "inner" models of $\sf CZF$ (constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory) and $\sf IZF$ (intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory), that further validate ${\sf AC}_{\sf FT}$ (the axiom of choice in all finite types). In this paper, we show that extensional generic realizability validates several choice principles for dependent types, all exceeding ${\sf AC}_{\sf FT}$. We then show that adding such choice principles does not change the arithmetic part of either $\sf CZF$ or $\sf IZF$.

Abstract:The theories of Nash noncooperative solutions and of rationalizability intend to describe the same target problem of ex ante individual decision making, but they are distinctively different. We consider what their essential difference is by giving a unified approach and parallel derivations of their resulting outcomes. Our results show that the only difference lies in the use of quantifiers for each player’s predictions about the other’s possible decisions; the universal quantifier for the former and the existential quantifier for the latter. Based on this unified approach, we discuss the statuses of those theories from the three points of views: Johansen’s postulates, the free-will postulate vs. complete determinism, and prediction/decision criteria. One conclusion we reach is that the Nash theory is coherent with the free-will postulate, but we would meet various difficulties with the rationalizability theory.

Abstract:Given a set U of alternatives, a choice (correspondence) on U is a contractive map c defined on a family Omega of nonempty subsets of U. Semantically, a choice c associates to each menu A in Omega a nonempty subset c(A) of A comprising all elements of A that are deemed selectable by an agent. A choice on U is total if its domain is the powerset of U minus the empty set, and partial otherwise. According to the theory of revealed preferences, a choice is rationalizable if it can be retrieved from a binary relation on U by taking all maximal elements of each menu. It is well-known that rationalizable choices are characterized by the satisfaction of suitable axioms of consistency, which codify logical rules of selection within menus. For instance, WARP (Weak Axiom of Revealed Preference) characterizes choices rationalizable by a transitive relation. Here we study the satisfiability problem for unquantified formulae of an elementary fragment of set theory involving a choice function symbol c, the Boolean set operators and the singleton, the equality and inclusion predicates, and the propositional connectives. In particular, we consider the cases in which the interpretation of c satisfies any combination of two specific axioms of consistency, whose conjunction is equivalent to WARP. In two cases we prove that the related satisfiability problem is NP-complete, whereas in the remaining cases we obtain NP-completeness under the additional assumption that the number of choice terms is constant.

Abstract:We consider several notions of well-foundedness of cardinals in the absence of the Axiom of Choice. Some of these have been conflated by some authors, but we separate them carefully. We then consider implications among these, and also between these and other consequences of Choice. For instance, we show that the Partition Principle implies that all of our versions of well-foundedness are equivalent. We also show that one version, concerning surjections, implies the Dual Cantor-Schröder-Bernstein theorem. It has been conjectured that well-foundedness, in one form or another, actually implies the Axiom of Choice, but this conjecture remains unresolved.

Abstract:We examine the effect of item arrangement on choices using a novel decision-making model based on the Markovian exploration of choice sets. This model is inspired by experimental evidence suggesting that the decision-making process involves sequential search through rapid stochastic pairwise comparisons. Our findings show that decision-makers following a reversible process are unaffected by item rearrangements, and further demonstrate that this property can be inferred from their choice behavior. Additionally, we provide a characterization of the class of Markovian models in which the agent makes all possible pairwise comparisons with positive probability. The intersection of reversible models and those allowing all pairwise comparisons is observationally equivalent to the well-known Luce model. Finally, we characterize the class of Markovian models for which the initial fixation does not impact the final choice and show that choice data reveals the existence and composition of consideration sets.

Abstract:We study conditions for the existence of stable and group-strategy-proof mechanisms in a many-to-one matching model with contracts if students' preferences are monotone in contract terms. We show that "equivalence", properly defined, to a choice profile under which contracts are substitutes and the law of aggregate holds is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a stable and group-strategy-proof mechanism. Our result can be interpreted as a (weak) embedding result for choice functions under which contracts are observable substitutes and the observable law of aggregate demand holds.

Abstract:Understanding human behaviour involves "why"'s as well as "how"'s. Rational people have good reasons for acting, but it can be hard to find out what these were and how they worked. In this Note, we discuss a few ways in which actions, preferences, and expectations are intermingled. This mixture is especially clear with the well-known solution procedure for extensive games called 'Backward Induction'. In particular, we discuss three scenarios for analyzing behaviour in a game. One can rationalize given moves as revealing agents' preferences, one can also rationalize them as revealing agents' beliefs about others, but one can also change a predicted pattern of behaviour by making promises. All three scenarios transform given games to new ones, and we prove some results about their scope. A more general view of relevant game transformations would involve dynamic and epistemic game logics. Finally, our analysis describes and disentangles matters: but it will not tell you what to do!

Abstract:We compare the consequences of imposing upon collective choice functions the classical requirement of Condorcet consistency with those arising when requiring the functions to satisfy the principle of pairwise justifiability. We show that, despite the different logic underlying these two requirements, they are equivalent when applied to anonymous and neutral rules defined over a class of domains. The class contains the universal, the single‐peaked, and that of order restriction, among other preference domains.
