Abstract:We study conditions for the existence of stable and group-strategy-proof mechanisms in a many-to-one matching model with contracts if students' preferences are monotone in contract terms. We show that "equivalence", properly defined, to a choice profile under which contracts are substitutes and the law of aggregate holds is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a stable and group-strategy-proof mechanism. Our result can be interpreted as a (weak) embedding result for choice functions under which contracts are observable substitutes and the observable law of aggregate demand holds.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of how to design a mechanism that is both stable and (group -) strategy - proof in the student - school matching model with contract terms. Specifically, the author has studied the conditions for ensuring the existence of a stable and (group -) strategy - proof mechanism in the case where students have monotonic preferences for contract terms. These conditions are related to the "equivalence" of the choice function, that is, under a certain choice function, contracts are substitutable and satisfy the law of aggregate demand. By defining this "equivalence", the author provides a necessary and sufficient condition to ensure the stability and strategy - proofness of the mechanism. The core contribution of the paper lies in that it provides a method to relax the assumptions on contract substitutability and the law of aggregate demand, especially in the context where student preferences are monotonic. This not only helps to understand under which conditions an effective matching mechanism can be designed, but also provides theoretical support for market design in practical applications, such as college admission, labor market matching and other scenarios.
