Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS) has attracted increasing attention for studying complex solids. A number of recent studies have applied 2DTS either with long pulses or away from any material resonances, situations that yield unconventional 2DTS spectra that are often difficult to interpret. Here, we clarify the generic origins of observed spectral features by examining 2DTS spectra of ZnTe, a model system with a featureless optical susceptibility at low terahertz frequencies. These results also reveal possible artifacts that may arise from electro-optic sampling in collinear 2DTS experiments, including the observation of spurious rectified or second harmonic signals.

Multidimensional Terahertz Probes of Quantum Materials

Abstract:Multidimensional spectroscopy has a long history originating from nuclear magnetic resonance, and has now found widespread application at infrared and optical frequencies as well. However, the energy scales of traditional multidimensional probes have been ill-suited for studying quantum materials. Recent technological advancements have now enabled extension of these multidimensional techniques to the terahertz frequency range, in which collective excitations of quantum materials are typically found. This Perspective introduces the technique of two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS) and the unique physics of quantum materials revealed by 2DTS spectra, accompanied by a selection of the rapidly expanding experimental and theoretical literature. While 2DTS has so far been primarily applied to quantum materials at equilibrium, we provide an outlook for its application towards understanding their dynamical non-equilibrium states and beyond.

Abstract:Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was used to measure the absorption coefficient and the refractive index of the similarly structured aldohexoses D-glucose and D-mannose in their polycrystalline states at room temperature. A number of well-resolved absorption peaks were observed in the frequency range of 0.2-3.0 THz, which were interpreted as originating from inter- and intra-molecular vibrational modes. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to obtain the structure and vibrational frequencies of the isolated glucose molecule in terahertz region. Calculated results were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The comparison between the experimental and theoretical results shows that the far-infrared absorption features are highly sensitive to the structure and spatial arrangement of molecules. THz-TDS is a potentially important tool in understanding the collective vibrational modes and conformational structures of bio-molecules.

Abstract:Multidimensional spectroscopy in the visible and infrared spectral ranges has become a powerful technique to retrieve dynamic correlations and couplings in wide-ranging systems by utilizing multiple correlated light-matter interactions. Its extension to the terahertz (THz) regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, where rich material degrees of freedom reside, however, has been progressing slowly. This chapter reviews some of the THz-frequency two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy techniques and experimental results realized in recent years. Examples include gas molecule rotations, spin precessions in magnetic systems, and liquid molecular dynamics studied by 2D THz or hybrid 2D THz-Raman spectroscopy techniques. The methodology shows promising applications to different THz-frequency degrees of freedom in various chemical systems and processes.

Abstract:Nonlinear terahertz (THz) spectroscopy relies on the interaction of matter with few-cycle THz pulses of electric field amplitudes up to megavolts/centimeter (MV/cm). In condensed-phase molecular systems, both resonant interactions with elementary excitations at low frequency such as intra- and intermolecular vibrations and nonresonant field-driven processes are relevant. Two-dimensional THz (2D-THz) spectroscopy is a key method for following nonequilibrium processes and dynamics of excitations to decipher the underlying interactions and molecular couplings. This article addresses the state of the art in 2D-THz spectroscopy by discussing the main concepts and illustrating them with recent results. The latter include the response of vibrational excitations in molecular crystals up to the nonperturbative regime of light-matter interaction and field-driven ionization processes and electron transport in liquid water.

Principles of 2D terahertz spectroscopy of collective excitations: the case of Josephson plasmons in layered superconductors

Abstract:Two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS), a terahertz analogue of nuclear magnetic resonance, is a new technique poised to address many open questions in complex condensed matter systems. The conventional theoretical framework used ubiquitously for interpreting multidimensional spectra of discrete quantum level systems is, however, insufficient for the continua of collective excitations in strongly correlated materials. Here, we develop a theory for 2DTS of a model collective excitation, the Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors. Starting from a mean-field approach at temperatures well below the superconducting phase transition, we obtain expressions for the multidimensional nonlinear responses that are amenable to intuition derived from the conventional single-mode scenario. We then consider temperatures near the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$, where dynamics beyond mean-field become important and conventional intuition fails. As fluctuations proliferate near $T_c$, the dominant contribution to nonlinear response comes from an optical parametric drive of counter-propagating Josephson plasmons, which gives rise to 2D spectra that are qualitatively different from the mean-field predictions. As such, and in contrast to one-dimensional spectroscopy techniques, such as third harmonic generation, 2DTS can be used to directly probe thermally excited finite-momentum plasmons and their interactions. Our theory provides a clear interpretation of recent 2DTS measurements on cuprates, and we discuss implications beyond the present context of Josephson plasmons.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy (TES) has emerged as a highly effective and versatile technique for investigating the photoelectric properties of diverse materials and nonlinear physical processes in the past few decades. Concurrently, research on two-dimensional (2D) materials has experienced substantial growth due to their atomically thin structures, exceptional mechanical and optoelectronic properties, and the potential for applications in flexible electronics, sensing, and nanoelectronics. Specifically, these materials offer advantages such as tunable bandgap, high carrier mobility, wideband optical absorption, and relatively short carrier lifetime. By applying TES to investigate the 2D materials, their interfaces and heterostructures, rich information about the interplay among photons, charges, phonons and spins can be unfolded, which provides fundamental understanding for future applications. Thus it is timely to review the nonlinear processes underlying THz emission in 2D materials including optical rectification, photon-drag, high-order harmonic generation and spin-to-charge conversion, showcasing the rich diversity of the TES employed to unravel the complex nature of these materials. Typical applications based on THz emissions, such as THz lasers, ultrafast imaging and biosensors, are also discussed. Step further, we analyzed the unique advantages of spintronic terahertz emitters and the future technological advancements in the development of new THz generation mechanisms leading to advanced THz sources characterized by wide bandwidth, high power and integration, suitable for industrial and commercial applications. The continuous advancement and integration of TES with the study of 2D materials and heterostructures promise to revolutionize research in different areas, including basic materials physics, novel optoelectronic devices, and chips for post-Moore's era.

Abstract:Two-dimensional terahertz–infrared–visible (2D TIRV) spectroscopy directly measures the coupling between quantum high-frequency vibrations and classical low-frequency modes of molecular motion. In addition to coupling strength, the signal intensity in 2D TIRV spectroscopy can also depend on the selection rules of the excited transitions. Here, we explore the selection rules in 2D TIRV spectroscopy by studying the coupling between the high-frequency CH3 stretching and low-frequency vibrations of liquid dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Different excitation pathways are addressed using variations in laser pulse timing and different polarizations of exciting pulses and detected signals. The DMSO signals generated via different excitation pathways can be readily distinguished in the spectrum. The intensities of different excitation pathways vary unequally with changes in polarization. We explain how this difference stems from the intensities of polarized and depolarized Raman and hyper-Raman spectra of high-frequency modes. These results apply to various systems and will help design and interpret new 2D TIRV spectroscopy experiments.

Abstract:Ultrafast 2D spectroscopy uses correlated multiple light-matter interactions for retrieving dynamic features that may otherwise be hidden under the linear spectrum; its extension to the terahertz regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, where a rich variety of material degrees of freedom reside, remains an experimental challenge. We report a demonstration of ultrafast 2D terahertz spectroscopy of gas-phase molecular rotors at room temperature. Using time-delayed terahertz pulse pairs, we observe photon echoes and other nonlinear signals resulting from molecular dipole orientation induced by multiple terahertz field-dipole interactions. The nonlinear time domain orientation signals are mapped into the frequency domain in 2D rotational spectra that reveal J-state-resolved nonlinear rotational dynamics. The approach enables direct observation of correlated rotational transitions and may reveal rotational coupling and relaxation pathways in the ground electronic and vibrational state.
Sparse Optimization of Two-Dimensional Terahertz Spectroscopy

Abstract:Two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS) is a low-frequency analogue of two-dimensional optical spectroscopy that is rapidly maturing as a probe of a wide variety of condensed matter systems. However, a persistent problem of 2DTS is the long experimental acquisition times, preventing its broader adoption. A potential solution, requiring no increase in experimental complexity, is signal reconstruction via compressive sensing. In this work, we apply the sparse exponential mode analysis (SEMA) technique to 2DTS of a cuprate superconductor. We benchmark the performance of the algorithm in reconstructing the terahertz nonlinearities and find that SEMA reproduces the asymmetric photon echo lineshapes with as low as a 10% sampling rate and reaches the reconstruction noise floor with beyond 20-30% sampling rate. The success of SEMA in reproducing such subtle, asymmetric lineshapes confirms compressive sensing as a general method to accelerate 2DTS and multidimensional spectroscopies more broadly.

Abstract:Electronic structure and dynamics are captured by optical 2D-Fourier-transform (2DFT) spectroscopy, which tracks the phase of the nonlinear signal during two time delays of a multi-pulse excitation sequence. These Fourier-transformed spectra separate and isolate overlapping and competing contributions to the coherent response. We have developed an ultra-stable platform consisting of nested interferometers with active phase control, allowing for exploration of single- and two-quantum coherences. Phase-resolved spectra are retrieved by all-optical determination of experimental phase ambiguities. GaAs quantum wells show suppression of many-body interactions in cross-linear polarized 2DFT spectra and many-body two-quantum coherences. Potassium vapor also shows unexpected two-quantum coherences.

Abstract:In order to deeply understand the spectroscopic characteristics of L-glutamic acid and L-tyrosine in the terahertz region, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was used to measure the absorption coefficient and refractive index of L-glutamic acid and L-tyrosine in their polycrystalline state at room temperature. A number of well-resolved absorption peaks were observed in the range of frequencies from 0.2 to 2.0 THz, which are interpreted as originating from inter- and intramolecular vibrational modes. The average refractive indices of L-glutamic acid and L-tyrosine are 1.56 and 1.47, respectively. In parallel with the experimental study, density functional theory was applied to obtain structure and vibrational frequencies of the isolated L-glutamic acid and L-tyrosine molecules in gas phase. The vibrational spectra were assigned according to the calculations. Results show that the theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data and the absorption peaks originate from inter- and intramolecular collective vibrational modes.
Time-dependent Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of Electron Devices with Two-Dimensional Dirac Materials: A Genuine Terahertz Signature for Graphene

Abstract:An intrinsic electron injection model for two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials, like graphene, is presented and its coupling to a recently developed quantum time-dependent Monte Carlo simulator for electron devices, based on the use of stochastic Bohmian conditional wave functions, is explained. The simulator is able to capture the full (dc,ac,transient, and noise) performance of 2D electron devices. In particular, we demonstrate that the injection of electrons with positive and negative kinetic energies is mandatory when investigating high-frequency performance of Dirac materials with Klein tunneling, while traditional models dealing with holes (defined as the lack of electrons) can lead to unphysical results. We show that the number of injected electrons is bias dependent, implying that an extra charge is required to get self-consistent results. Interestingly, we provide a successful comparison with experimental dc data. Finally, we predict that a genuine high-frequency signature due to a roughly constant electron injection rate in 2D linear band electron devices (which is missing in 2D parabolic band ones) can be used as a band structure tester.

Abstract:Optical 2-D Fourier transform spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying resonant light-matter interactions, determining the transition structure and monitoring dynamics of optically created excitations. The ability to separate homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening is one important capability. In this paper, we discuss the use of this technique to study excitonic transitions in semiconductor nanostructures. In quantum wells, the effects of structural disorder is observed as inhomogeneous broadening of the exciton resonances. In quantum dots, the temperature dependence of the homogeneous width gives insight into the nature of the dephasing processes.

Abstract:Significance The thermally populated motions of liquids, including hydrogen bonds, low-energy bending vibrations, conformational torsions, and hindered rotations, are resonant in the terahertz region of the spectrum. These motions regulate solvation, macromolecular structure, and vibrational energy flow in liquid-phase chemistry. By exciting terahertz motions nonlinearly with multiple pulses of terahertz light, we can measure their anharmonic coupling and distribution of chemical environments. We can also begin to control their quantum coherence and population, a critical step forward in the control of liquid-phase chemistry with light.
