Abstract:The terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, often referred to as the bridge between electronics and photonics, has emerged as a highly active area of research, owing to its immense potential in both fundamental scientific exploration and practical applications. Over the past three decades, significant strides have been made in THz science and technology, driven by rapid advancements in THz sources, detectors, and systems. Notably, THz spectrometers have played a pivotal role in various fields, facilitating source spectral characterization, detector spectral response evaluation, and material spectroscopic analysis. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current research status and recent developments in THz spectrometers. The systems are categorized into four main types based on their mechanisms: Fourier transform spectrometers, THz time-domain spectrometers, frequency-tunable spectrometers, and wavefront-division spectrometers. Each category is explored in detail, encompassing discussions on the underlying physical principles, exemplary demonstrations, and technological advancements aimed at enhancing system performance. Furthermore, the review delves into the future prospects of THz spectrometers, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for further advancement in the field. By offering detailed insights into the spectroscopic methods and techniques that bridge the THz gap, this review aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners alike.
