Abstract:Caldera-forming eruptions of silicic volcanic systems are among the most devastating events on Earth. By contrast, post-collapse volcanic activity initiating new caldera cycles is generally considered less hazardous. Formed after Santorini's latest caldera-forming eruption of ~1600 bce , the Kameni Volcano in the southern Aegean Sea enables the eruptive evolution of a recharging multi-cyclic caldera to be reconstructed. Kameni's eruptive record has been documented by onshore products and historical descriptions of mainly effusive eruptions dating back to 197 bce . Here we combine high-resolution seismic reflection data with cored lithologies from International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 398 at four sites to determine the submarine architecture and volcanic history of intra-caldera deposits from Kameni. Our shore-crossing analysis reveals the deposits of a submarine explosive eruption that produced up to 3.1 km 3 of pumice and ash, which we relate to a historical eruption in 726 ce . The estimated volcanic explosivity index of magnitude 5 exceeds previously considered worst-case eruptive scenarios for Santorini. Our finding that the Santorini caldera is capable of producing large explosive eruptions at an early stage in the caldera cycle implies an elevated hazard potential for the eastern Mediterranean region, and potentially for other recharging silicic calderas.

Abstract:Santorini Island (Greece) is an active volcano which has alternated between dormant and active periods over the last 650,000 years with the latest volcanic unrest occurring in 2011–2012. Here we report a geochemical survey of fumarolic gases collected at Nea Kameni islet located in the center of the caldera over the period 2015–2022 in order to study the activity of the volcano and changes in hydrothermal conditions. This period is marked by the absence of significant geochemical anomalies compared to the unrest of 2011–2012, implying that no new magma upwelling has occurred. This is evident from the low CO 2 /CH 4 ratio and H 2 concentration of fumaroles. An increase of the atmospheric contribution in gases after the 2011–2012 unrest suggests a decrease of the deep gas flow and the chemical and C-He-isotope compositions are compatible with a model of Rayleigh fractionation in which CO 2 dissolves in water at decreasing temperatures over time. These results are consistent with temperature estimates obtained using the H 2 /N 2 geothermometer, seismic and geodetic evidences. This implies a slowing of the degassing of the hydrothermal/volcanic system and a cooling of the magma injected at shallow depth in 2011–2012. All these conclusions support a quiescent state of the Santorini volcano over the period 2015–2022.

Abstract:Santorini's caldera being unrest during 2011-2012, led several studies to raise the important question of whether seismicity is associated with an impending and potential volcanic eruption or it solely relieves the accumulated tectonic energy. In the present work we study seismic coda waves generated by local earthquake events prior, during and after the seismic crisis that occurred within the caldera area. Coda waves are interpreted as scattered seismic waves generated by heterogeneities within the Earth, i.e. by faults, fractures, velocity and/or density boundaries and anomalies, etc. In particular, we utilize the three components of the seismograms recorded by three seismological stations on the island of Santorini and estimate the duration of the coda waves by implementing a three step procedure that includes the signal-to-noise ratio, the STA/LTA method and the short time Fourier transform. The final estimation was verified or reestimated manually due to the existent ambient seismic noise. Due to the nature and the path complexity of the coda waves and towards achieving a unified framework for the study of the immerse geo-structural seismotectonic complexity of the Santorini volcanic complex, we use Non-Extensive Statistical Physics (NESP) to study the probability distribution functions (pdfs) of the increments of seismic coda waves. NESP forms a generalization of the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics, that has been extensively used for the analysis of semi-chaotic systems that exhibit long-range interactions, memory effects and multi-fractality. The analysis and results demonstrate that the seismic coda waves increments deviate from the Gaussian shape and their respective pdfs could adequately be described and processed by the q-Gaussian distribution. High magma decompression rates at the peak of a violent caldera-forming eruption (Lower Pumice 1 eruption, Santorini, Greece)

Abstract:We use the deposit sequence resulting from the first catastrophic caldera collapse event recorded at Santorini (associated with 184 ka Lower Pumice 1 eruption), to study the shallow conduit dynamics at the peak of caldera collapse. The main phase of the Lower Pumice 1 eruption commenced with the development of a sustained buoyant eruption column, producing a clast-supported framework of rhyodacitic white pumice (LP1-A). The clasts have densities of 310–740 kg m−3, large coalesced vesicles that define unimodal size distributions and moderate to high vesicle number densities (1.2 × 109–1.7 × 109 cm−3). Eruption column collapse, possibly associated with incipient caldera collapse, resulted in the development of pyroclastic flows (LP1-B). The resulting ignimbrite is characterised by rhyodacitic white pumice with a narrow density range (250–620 kg m−3) and moderate to high vesicle number densities (1.3 × 109–2.1 × 109 cm−3), comparable to clasts from LP1-A. An absence of deep, basement-derived lithic clast assemblages, together with the occurrence of large vesicles and relatively high vesicle number densities in pumice from the fallout and pyroclastic flow phases, suggests shallow fragmentation depths, a prolonged period of bubble nucleation and growth, and moderate rates of decompression prior to fragmentation (7–11 MPa s−1). Evacuation of magma during the pyroclastic flow phase led to under-pressurisation of the magma reservoir, the propagation of faults (associated with the main phase of caldera collapse) and the formation of 20 m thick lithic lag breccias (LP1-C). Rhyodacitic pumices from the base of the proximal lithic lag breccias show a broader range of density (330–990 kg m−3), higher vesicle number densities (4.5 × 109–1.1 × 1010 cm−3) and higher calculated magma decompression rates of 15–28 MPa s−1 than pyroclasts from the pre-collapse eruptive phases. In addition, the abundance of lithic clasts, including deeper, basement-derived lithic assemblages, records the opening of new vents and a deepening of the fragmentation surface. These data support numerical simulations which predict rapid increases in magma decompression and mass discharge rates at the onset of caldera collapse.

Abstract:The recent 2014 eruption of the Ontake volcano in Japan recalled that hydrothermal fields of moderately active volcanoes have an unpredictable and hazardous behavior that may endanger human beings. Steam blasts can expel devastating ejecta and create craters of several tens of meters. The management of such hydrothermal events in populated areas is problematic because of their very short time of occurrence. At present no precursory signal is clearly identified as a potential warning of imminent danger. Here we show how the combination of seismic noise monitoring and muon density tomography allows to detect, with an unprecedented space and time resolution, the increase of activity (at timescales of few hours to few days) of a hydrothermal spot located 50 to 100 m below the summit of an active volcano, the La Soufrière of Guadeloupe, in the Lesser Antilles. We show how the combination of those two methods improves the risk evaluation of short-term hazards and the localization of the involved volumes in the volcano. We anticipate that the deployment of networks of various sensors including temperature probes, seismic antennas and cosmic muon telescopes around such volcanoes could valuably contribute to early warning decisions.

Abstract:Driven to collapse Volcanic eruptions occur frequently, but only rarely are they large enough to cause the top of the mountain to collapse and form a caldera. Gudmundsson et al. used a variety of geophysical tools to monitor the caldera formation that accompanied the 2014 Bárdarbunga volcanic eruption in Iceland. The volcanic edifice became unstable as magma from beneath Bárdarbunga spilled out into the nearby Holuhraun lava field. The timing of the gradual collapse revealed that it is the eruption that drives caldera formation and not the other way around. Science , this issue p. 262

Abstract:Abstract Volcano sector collapse and pyroclastic density currents are common phenomena on active volcanoes and potentially a fatal source of tsunami waves which constitute a serious hazard for local as well as distant coastal population. Several examples in recent history, warn us on the urgent need to improve our mitigation counter-actions when tsunamis have volcanic origin. However, instrumental record of tsunami generated by mass movement along a volcano flank are still rare and not well understood yet. Small tsunamis (≤1 m) induced by pyroclastic density currents associated to violent explosions of Stromboli volcano were recorded in near-source conditions (<1.6 km). We show how tsunami waveform remains unaltered regardless of the two orders of variability in the landslide volume and dynamics. This unprecedented record is also providing the lesson to develop unconventional warning strategies necessary when the tsunamigenic source is expected to be very close (<10 minutes) to densely populated coasts and with a limited time to issue an alert based on simulation of wave propagation and inundation.

Abstract:The circum-Pacific convergent margin is known as "the Ring of Fire", with abundant volcano eruptions. Large eruptions are rare but very disastrous. It remains obscure how are large explosive volcanos formed and where are the danger zones. Three largest eruptions since 1900, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, the Mt. Pinatubo, and the Novarupta were found to be associated with subductions of volatile-rich sediments and located close to slab windows. Among them, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai is close to subducting seamount chains; the Mt. Pinatubo is right next to subducting fossil ridges. Both seamount chains and fossil ridges have water depths much shallower than the carbonate compensation depths (CCD) in the Pacific Ocean. Seismic image shows that a seamount is subducting towards the Novarupta volcano. Subduction of volatile-rich sediments and a slab window nearby are the two most important favorable conditions for catastrophic eruptions. Slab windows expose the mantle wedge to the hot asthenosphere, which increases the temperature and dramatically promotes the partial melting of the carbonate-fluxed domains, forming volatile-rich magmas that powered explosive eruptions.
A new view of seismicity under Mt. Etna volcano, Italy, 2014-2023 from multi-scale high-precision earthquake relocations

Abstract:Mt. Etna volcano in southern Italy, with a high rate of eruptive events and flank instability, poses a high hazard to surrounding, densely populated areas. Monitoring, hazard assessment and comprehension of Mt. Etna requires detailed knowledge of the structure and dynamics of the volcanic system across space-time scales. Here we relocate volcano-tectonic earthquakes from 2014 to 2023 at Mt. Etna with an enhanced location procedure which generates travel-time corrections to improve multi-scale precision and uses waveform similarity to improve fine-scale precision. Relative to previous studies, the relocated seismicity shows improved resolution of distinct patterns of organization and clustering at different space-time scales, and images novel features. Shallower than about 10 km depth, dense clusters dominate in the central part of the volcano, some concentrated within volumes of 0.5 km or less in extent, and mainly active for limited periods around the December 2018 and 2021-2022 eruptive episodes. These clusters likely indicate brittle fracturing due to stress changes from intrusive dykes adjacent to the clusters or from replenishment of a shallow, central magmatic reservoir preceding volcanic activity. Shallower seismicity surrounding the central clusters is composed of multi-scale, hierarchical clusters, bands and lineations of seismicity, some showing far-field response to intrusions over limited time periods and others active throughout the study periods and showing response to faulting and flank collapse in the volcanic edifice and to regional stress. Focal mechanism P- and T-axes for the shallower seismicity show clearly a previously identified radial symmetry, indicating pressurization strain sources concentrated under the summit area of the volcano. From about 10 to 25 km depth, diffuse and localized clusters of seismicity define an ~5 km or thinner, tabular surface plunging ~20° towards N30°W and characterized by NNW-SSE striking P-axes. This NNW plunging surface likely reflects thrusting below the volcanic cover due to NW oriented crustal convergence. Dense, elongated clusters of seismicity occur around 1-20 km depth, including two preceding an eruptive episode in 2021-2022 which may indicate magma movement and re-pressurization in the intermediate and deep crust.

Abstract:How the Earth's crust accommodates magma emplacement influences the signals that can be detected by monitoring volcano seismicity and surface deformation, which are routinely used to forecast volcanic eruptions. However, we lack direct observational links between deformation caused by magma emplacement and monitoring signals. Here we use field mapping and photogrammetry to quantify deformation caused by the emplacement of at least 2.5 km 3 of silicic magma in the Reyðarártindur pluton, Southeast Iceland. Our results show that magma emplacement triggered minor and local roof uplift, and that magma reservoir growth was largely aseismic by piecemeal floor subsidence. The occurrence and arrangement of fractures and faults in the reservoir roof can be explained by magmatic overpressure, suggesting that magma influx was not fully accommodated by floor subsidence. The tensile and shear fracturing would have caused detectable seismicity. Overpressure eventually culminated in eruption, as evidenced by exposed conduits that are associated with pronounced local subsidence of the roof rocks, corresponding to the formation of an asymmetric graben at the volcano surface. Hence, the field observations highlight processes that may take place within silicic volcanoes, not accounted for in widely used models to interpret volcanic unrest.

Hidden earthquakes unveil the dynamic evolution of a large-scale explosive eruption

Abstract:Volcanic eruptions progress by co-evolving the fluid and solid systems. The fluid mechanics can be observed through the evolution of plumes and ejecta. How does the solid evolve? When does the conduit open? When does it close? Seismology can potentially tell us about these processes by measuring the failure of the solid rock. However, such inferences require detection of earthquakes during an explosive eruption. Standard earthquake detection methods often fail during this time as the eruption itself produces seismic noise that obscures the earthquakes. In this work, we address this problem by applying both a supervised and unsupervised search techniques to the existing catalog of the 2008 Okmok Caldera eruption to find brittle failure signals during the continuous eruptive sequence. We were able to detect >4500 new earthquakes using the 419 events previously located by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). A spatiotemporal analysis of the occurrence of earthquakes during the eruption reveal interesting observations: Seismic bursts during the eruption are not synchronized with the exhalation of large ash and steam plumes, suggesting that the dynamics of the eruption are controlled by a clog-and-crack mechanism; most of the Caldera co-eruptive seismicity that is not located at the focus of the eruption occurs under the intra-Caldera cones, showing the activation of their hydrological system due to a system-wide pressurization; the end of the eruption is marked by a large burst of small, deep earthquakes trending SW-NE, possibly related to a propagating lateral dike similar to those observed in other basaltic calderas; the magnitude distribution of seismicity through time shows that the largest earthquakes in the bursts do not happen at the beginning of the sequence like in typical mainshock-aftershock sequences. Furthermore, high precision earthquake relocations highlight a ring-fault structure inside of Okmok Caldera which is thought to be acting as the pathway for fluids to the surface.
Large-scale mass wasting on small volcanic islands revealed by the study of Flores Island (Azores)

Abstract:Small intra-plate volcanic islands (total height above seafloor <2500 m) have been considered gravitationally stable. Topographic, stratigraphic, structural and new K/Ar data show that the small island of Flores (Azores) is strongly asymmetric and made up of nested volcanic successions. Along the northwestern coastline, ca. 1.2 Ma lava flows are in lateral contact with a younger volcanic unit (ca. 0.7 Ma), reflecting the existence of a steep lateral discontinuity. From the general dip of the lava flows, their age and the arcuate geometry of the contact, we infer a major landslide that removed the western flank of the older volcano. Further inland, E-dipping lava flows at the summit of the island are ca. 1.3 Ma, suggesting another landslide structure that displaced the whole western half of the former volcanic edifice. Available offshore data show a large hummocky field west of Flores, here interpreted as voluminous debris-avalanche deposits. Unlike the eastern and central Azores islands, Flores sits on a relatively stable tectonic setting. Therefore, we propose that small-size volcanic islands can be sufficiently gravitationally unstable to experience recurrent episodes of large-scale mass wasting triggered by mechanisms other than tectonic earthquakes and thus represent an under-evaluated potential source of hazard and, therefore, risk.

Abstract:Proximal to the source, tephra fall can cause severe disruption, and populations of small volcanically active islands can be particularly susceptible. Volcanic hazard assessments draw on data from past events generated from historical observations and the geological record. However, on small volcanic islands, many eruptive deposits are under-represented or missing due to the bulk of tephra being deposited offshore and high erosion rates from weather and landslides. Ascension Island is such an island located in the South Atlantic, with geological evidence of mafic and felsic explosive volcanism. Limited tephra preservation makes it difficult to correlate explosive eruption deposits and constrains the frequency or magnitude of past eruptions. We therefore combined knowledge from the geological record together with eruptions from the analogous São Miguel island, Azores, to probabilistically model a range of possible future explosive eruption scenarios. We simulated felsic events from a single vent in the east of the island, and, as mafic volcanism has largely occurred from monogenetic vents, we accounted for uncertainty in future vent location by using a grid of equally probable source locations within the areas of most recent eruptive activity. We investigated the hazards and some potential impacts of short-lived explosive events where tephra fall deposits could cause significant damage and our results provide probabilities of tephra fall loads from modelled events exceeding threshold values for potential damage. For basaltic events with 6–10 km plume heights, we found a 50% probability that tephra fallout across the west side of the island would impact roads and the airport during a single explosive event, and if roofs cannot be cleared, three modelled explosive phases produced tephra loads that may be sufficient to cause roof collapse (≥ 100 kg m −2 ). For trachytic events, our results show a 50% probability of loads of 2–12 kg m −2 for a plume height of 6 km increasing to 898–3167 kg m −2 for a plume height of 19 km. Our results can assist in raising awareness of the potential impacts of tephra fall from short-lived explosive events on small islands.

Abstract:Nisyros Island (Greece) is affected by widespread gas emissions from fumarolic fields located at the bottom of hydrothermal craters in the southern part of its caldera. This morphology and the current low gas fluxes make Nisyros an ideal site for testing the limits of physics-based gas dispersal models in confined and low-emission conditions. Here, we focused our attention on the local scale volcanic gas dispersion from the Stephanos hydrothermal crater. In April 2023, a 1-week survey was carried out to measure weather data, CO 2 and H 2 S gas fluxes, air concentrations from portable gas stations, and chemical composition of fumarolic gases and to acquire thermal images of the crater floor. These data were used as inputs and boundary conditions for numerical simulations using a DISGAS-2.6.0 model in order to quantify the present-day volcanic degassing and its associated uncertainties, accounting for the meteorological variability. Model results are provided in terms of H 2 S probabilistic exceedance and persistence maps, showing gas concentrations within the crater that fall below the thresholds indicated for the occurrence of serious respiratory problems. Since DISGAS-2.6.0 does not account for chemical reactions, this study represents a good opportunity to discuss the methodological limits of simulating the dispersion of H 2 S which is challenging due to its rapid degradation and dilution in the atmosphere. In this regard, we also provided an empirical law of the H 2 S depletion in low-emission conditions that takes into account the uncertainties related to the field measurements.

Abstract:Increase in seismicity, gas emission and ground uplift are symptoms of unrest in Quaternary calderas. Since the raising of the alert level in 2012, their continuous increase in the Campi Flegrei caldera is generating growing concerns for such a densely populated area. Until now, we never detected the injection of fresh magma in the shallow system, leaving uncertainties on the proximity of an eruption. Here, we show evidence for episodic refills of magma and magmatic fluids in shallow and deep reservoirs beneath the resurging area, revealed by a new fully non-linear 4D (in space and time) seismic tomography. Transient signatures in tomograms depict the ascent of magma batches at shallow depth, which could have started in 2019, perturbing the shallow circulation of hydrothermal fluids. The existence of a similar signature also during the 1982–84 episode, suggests that accumulation of magma batches may be a common way of caldera to grow. Anyway, the ability to fast track changes associated with magma ascent is crucial to forecasting and modeling how restless calderas evolve and may become prone to erupt.

Abstract:The powerful eruption of Hunga volcano (15‐January‐2022) excavated ∼6.3 km3 of pre‐existing material, leaving behind an 855 m deep crater. The scientific and humanitarian response to this event was challenging due to the remote location, safety concerns, and COVID‐19 pandemic restrictions. To investigate the status of ongoing eruptive/hydrothermal activity, this study used, for the first time, an un‐crewed surface vessel operated remotely from >16,000 km away to make direct water column measurements within the crater and map its structure in detail. Intense turbidity and oxidation‐reduction potential (ORP) anomalies located ongoing activity at sites on the steep inside crater slopes near both remaining islands. Mid‐water acoustic reflectors indicated ongoing degassing, and positive ORP anomalies suggested gas composition was dominated by CO2. At least 75% of the crater rim is shallower than 100 m, so any exchange with the surrounding ocean is limited by the depths of breaches in the rim (185 m between the islands and 290 m on the ENE side). This post‐eruption bathymetry results in accumulation of emission products within the deep crater. There were no indications of the ongoing activity visible at the ocean surface, which highlights the limitations and inherent biases associated with relying on discolored surface water and/or atmospheric disturbances to determine eruption start/end dates at submarine volcanoes. This study demonstrates the value and need to add repeat hydrothermal plume and bathymetric surveys to our toolbox for monitoring submarine volcanoes, and the potential for un‐crewed, remotely operated vessels to contribute significantly to these efforts.

Abstract:Uncertainties in modelling volcanic hazards are often amplified in geographically large systems which have a diverse eruption history that comprises variable eruption styles from many different vent locations. The ~700 km2 Okataina Volcanic Centre (OVC) is a caldera complex in New Zealand which has displayed a range of eruption styles and compositions over its current phase of activity (26 ka–present), including one basaltic maar-forming eruption, one basaltic Plinian eruption and nine rhyolitic Plinian eruptions. All three of these eruption styles occurred within the past 3.5 ky, and any of these styles could occur in the event of a future eruption. The location of a future eruption is also unknown. Future vents could potentially open in one of three different areas which have been activated in the past 26 ky at the OVC: the Tarawera linear vent zone (LVZ) (five eruptions), the Haroharo LVZ (five eruptions) or outside of these LVZs (one eruption). A future rhyolitic or basaltic Plinian eruption from the OVC is likely to generate widespread tephra fall in loads that will cause significant disruption and have severe socio-economic impacts. Past OVC tephra hazard studies have focused on evaluating hazard from a rhyolitic Plinian eruption at select vent locations in the OVC’s Tarawera LVZ. Here, we expand upon past studies by evaluating tephra hazard for all possible OVC eruption vent areas and for both rhyolitic and basaltic Plinian eruption styles, and explore how these parameters influence tephra hazard forecasts. Probabilistic volcanic hazard model BET_VH and advection–diffusion model TEPHRA2 were used to assess the hazard of accumulating ≥10 kg m−2 of tephra from both basaltic Plinian and rhyolitic Plinian eruption styles, occurring from within the Tarawera LVZ, the Haroharo LVZ or other potential vent areas within the caldera. Our results highlight the importance of considering all the potential vent locations of a volcanic system, in order to capture the full eruption catalogue in analyses (e.g. 11 eruptions over 26 ky for the OVC versus only five eruptions over 26 ky for the Tarawera LVZ), as well as the full spatial distribution of tephra hazard. Although the Tarawera LVZ has been prominently discussed in studies of OVC hazard because of its recent activity (1886 and ~1315 ad), we find that in the event of a future eruption, the estimated likelihood of a vent opening within the Haroharo LVZ (last eruption 5.6 ka) is equivalent (<1 % difference) to that for the Tarawera LVZ (31.8 compared to 32.5 %). Including both the Haroharo LVZ and the Tarawera LVZ as possible source areas in the hazard analysis allows us to assess the full spatial extent of OVC tephra fall hazard. By considering both basaltic Plinian and rhyolitic Plinian eruption styles, as well as multiple vent location areas, we present a hazard assessment which aims to reduce bias through incorporating a greater range of eruption variables.

Abstract:A detailed study of past eruptive activity is crucial to understanding volcanic systems and associated hazards. We present a meticulous stratigraphic analysis, a comprehensive chronological reconstruction, thorough tephra mapping, and a detailed analysis of the interplay between primary and secondary volcanic processes of the post-900 AD activity of La Fossa caldera, including the two main systems of La Fossa volcano and Vulcanello cones (Vulcano Island, Italy). Our analyses demonstrate how the recent volcanic activity of La Fossa caldera is primarily characterized by effusive and Strombolian activity and Vulcanian eruptions, combined with sporadic sub-Plinian events and both impulsive and long-lasting phreatic explosions, all of which have the capacity to severely impact the entire northern sector of Vulcano island. We document a total of 30 eruptions, 25 from the La Fossa volcano and 5 from Vulcanello cones, consisting of ash to lapilli deposits and fields of ballistic bombs and blocks. Volcanic activity alternated with significant erosional phases and volcaniclastic re-sedimentation. Large-scale secondary erosion processes occur in response to the widespread deposition of fine-grained ash blankets, both onto the active cone of La Fossa and the watersheds conveying their waters into the La Fossa caldera. The continuous increase in ground height above sea level, particularly in the western sector of the caldera depression where key infrastructure is situated, is primarily attributed to long-term alluvial processes. We demonstrate how a specific methodological approach is key to the characterization and hazard assessment of low-to-high intensity volcanic activity, where tephra is emitted over long time periods and is intercalated with phases of erosion and re-sedimentation.
