Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Carbon materials show their importance in electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices as key components of electrodes, such as active materials, conductive additives and buffering frameworks. To meet the requirements of vastly developing markets related to EES, especially for electric vehicles and large scale energy storage, the rational design of functional carbon materials with the basis of a deep understanding of the structure-property relationships is demanded, in which dimensionality variations and hybridizations of the carbon materials play critical roles in improving electrochemical performances of EES devices. This review focuses on the dimensionality manipulation in functional carbon materials, including transition, matching and integration, to optimize the reaction space, interface and framework in electrodes, respectively. This review gives a comprehensive review on how the dimensionality manipulation improves performance of the carbon-based electrodes in kinetics optimization, electron transfer acceleration, mechanical stabilization and thermal dissipation upon charging/discharging. The report ends with a critical perspective on the future challenges facing carbon-based electrodes with dimensionality dependence. The progress highlighted here is expected to provide a guidance for the precise design and targeted synthesis of dimensionality varied carbon-based electrode materials towards safe and high performance EES devices and the resulting optimized energy deployments.

Tailor-made Overstable 3D Carbon Superstructures Towards Efficient Zinc-Ion Storage

Abstract:Designing carbon materials with ideal stable hierarchical porous structures and flexible functional properties for efficient and sustainable Zn2+ ion storage still faces great challenges. Herein, the three-dimensional carbon superstructures with spherical nanoflower-like structures were tailor-made by the self-assembly strategy. Specifically, organic polymer units (i.e. organic motifs) form by tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone (TBQ) and 2,6-diamino anthraquinone (DAQ) via a noble-metal-free catalyzed coupling reaction. Subsequently, the organic motifs assemble into spherical nanoflower-like superstructures induced by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and aromatic π-π stacking interactions. Well-designed carbon superstructures can provide a stable backbone that effectively blocks structural stacking and collapse. Meanwhile, the hierarchical porous structures in 3D carbon superstructures provide continuous charge transport pathways to greatly shorten the ion diffusion distance, and as a result, the carbon superstructures-based zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) provide a capacity of 245 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g, a high energy density of 152 Wh/kg and an ultra-long life of 300,000 cycles at 20 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance is also attributed to the corresponding charge storage mechanism, i.e., the alternate binding of Zn2+/CF3SO3− ions. Besides, the high-level N/O motifs improve the surface properties of the carbon superstructures and reduce the ion migration barriers for more efficient charge storage. This paper provides insights into the design of advanced carbon-based cathodes and presents a fundamental understanding of their charge storage mechanisms.

Abstract:The advancement of clean electrochemical technologies is highly related to the development of novel active materials. Especially, new carbon materials are playing great roles in the electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, we discuss the recent progress on new carbon materials from several important aspects including new mold carbon sources, novel high-efficiency puffing method, tailored carbon arrays morphologies (vertical graphene and carbon nanotubes branch), and modified heteroatom (N and S)-doped carbon materials. Our perspective may shed a light on further study on new carbon materials for applications in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage (EES) plays a critical role in tackling climate change and the energy crisis, unfortunately it faces several challenges. Unlike conventional electrode materials which are gradually approaching their capacity limit, the emerging atomically thin 2D materials can potentially open up various new possibilities for design and fabrication of novel EES devices. The studies in this area to date have laid the groundwork in understanding fundamental physics and chemistry of 2D materials, enabling a toolbox of engineering strategies to be used to improve the EES performance. This report reviews recent progress in engineering 2D materials for EES applications. Both theoretical and experimental investigations in this area are summarized, and pathways toward improved EES performance and their novel applications are highlighted based on appropriate integration of promising strategies such as the surface activation, chemical doping, phase engineering, and hybrid structures.

Abstract:Alkali-metal-based batteries and supercapacitors with high energy or power performance are two promising candidates to satisfy the need of electric consuming devices in the modern society. However, classical 2D planar materials with few electron-transfer paths and low active area are unable to support such systems. With the merits of high electrochemical/physical/mechanical properties, the 3D carbon frameworks are achieving booming interest as current collectors and support structures to fabricate the electrodes with ideal properties. Herein, this Spotlight publication focuses on the recent advances in the development of 3D carbon current collectors (CCCs), the performance improvements of the corresponding electrode, and the energy storage devices. In addition, discussions about the relationship between the electrochemical properties and the special structure of the scaffold are also given in this paper. Furthermore, we concluded the disadvantages of the currently proposed 3D CCCs and provide some expectations of future rational design current collectors with better properties.

Abstract:Carbon‐based nanomaterials have significantly pushed the boundary of electrochemical performance of lithium‐based batteries (LBs) thanks to their excellent conductivity, high specific surface area, controllable morphology, and intrinsic stability. Complementary to these inherent properties, various synthetic techniques have been adopted to prepare carbon‐based nanomaterials with diverse structures and different dimensionalities including 1D nanotubes and nanorods, 2D nanosheets and films, and 3D hierarchical architectures, which have been extensively applied as high‐performance electrode materials for energy storage and conversion. The present review aims to outline the structural design and composition engineering of carbon‐based nanomaterials as high‐performance electrodes of LBs including lithium‐ion batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, and lithium–oxygen batteries. This review mainly focuses on the boosting of electrochemical performance of LBs by rational dimensional design and porous tailoring of advanced carbon‐based nanomaterials. Particular attention is also paid to integrating active materials into the carbon‐based nanomaterials, and the structure–performance relationship is also systematically discussed. The developmental trends and critical challenges in related fields are summarized, which may inspire more ideas for the design of advanced carbon‐based nanostructures with superior properties.

Abstract:Carbon materials are key components in energy storage and conversion devices and most directly impact device performance. The need for advanced carbon materials has become more pressing with the increasing demand for high-performance energy conversion and storage facilities. Nonetheless, realizing significant performance improvements across devices remains challenging because of the difficulties in controlling irregularly organized microstructures and the specific carbon structures concerned. With the aim of realizing devisable structures, adjustable functions, and performance breakthroughs, this review proposes the concept of superstructured carbons. In fact, superstructured carbons are a category of carbon-based materials characterized by precisely built pores, networks, and interfaces. This unique category meets the particular functional demands of high-performance devices and exceeds the rigid structure of traditional carbons. In the context of these superstructured carbons, we present methods for realizing both custom-built structures and target-oriented functionalities. For specific energy-related reactions, we emphasize the targeted property-structure relationships in these well-defined superstructured carbons. Finally, future developments and practicability challenges of superstructured carbons are also proposed.

Abstract:Biomass-derived carbon materials (B-d-CMs) are considered as a group of very promising electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage (EES) by virtue of their naturally diverse and intricate microarchitectures, extensive and low-cost source, environmental friendliness, and feasibility to be produced in a large scale. However, the practical application of raw B-d-CMs in EES is limited by their relatively rare storage sites and low diffusion kinetics. In recent years, various strategies from structural design to material composite manipulation have been explored to overcome these problems. In this review, a controllable design of B-d-CM structures boosting their storage sites and diffusion kinetics for EES devices including SIBs, Li-S batteries, and supercapacitors is systematically summarized from the aspects of effects of pseudographic structure, hierarchical pore structure, surface functional groups, and heteroatom doping of B-d-CMs, as well as the composite structure of B-d-CMs, aiming to provide guidance for further rational design of the B-d-CMs for high-performance EES devices. Besides, the contemporary challenges and perspectives on B-d-CMs and their composites are also proposed for further practical application of B-d-CMs for EES devices.

Abstract:The development of new energy storage technology has played a crucial role in advancing the green and low-carbon energy revolution. This has led to significant progress, spanning from fundamental research to its practical application in industry over the past decade. Nevertheless, the constrained performance of crucial materials poses a significant challenge, as current electrochemical energy storage systems may struggle to meet the growing market demand. In recent years, carbon derived from biomass has garnered significant attention because of its customizable physicochemical properties, environmentally friendly nature, and considerable economic value. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the production-application chain for biomass-derived carbon. It provides a comprehensive analysis of morphology design, structural regulation, and heteroatom-doping modification, and explores the operational mechanisms in different energy storage devices. Moreover, considering recent research progress, the potential uses of biomass-derived carbon biomass-derived carbon in alkali metal-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and supercapacitors are thoroughly assessed, offering a broader outlook on the emerging energy sector. Finally, based on the technical challenges that need to be addressed, potential research directions and development objectives are suggested for achieving large-scale production of biomass-derived carbon in the field of energy storage.

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials exhibit promising application in electrochemical energy storage especially for hollow or porous structure due to the fascinating and outstanding properties. Although there has been achieved good progress, controllable synthesis of hollow or porous carbons with uniform morphology by a green and easy way is still a challenge. Herein, a new artful and green approach is designed to controllably prepare hollow porous carbon materials with the assistance of boron oxide vitreum under a relatively low temperature of 500 °C. The vitreous B2O3 provides a flowing carbonization environment and acts as etching agent accompanying with boron doping. By this general strategy, hollow and porous carbon architectures with various morphology of spheres and hollow polyhedrons are successfully fabricated by metal organic framework (MOF) precursors. Furthermore, such hollow carbon materials exhibit considerably excellent Na+/K+ storage properties through enhanced capacitive behavior due to due to the highly porous structure and large surface area. It is notable that hollow carbon spheres display nearly 90% initial Coulombic efficiency, outstanding rate capability with 130 mAh g-1 at 30 A g-1 and long cycling life for sodium ion storage.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of interpenetrating carbon nanotubes and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanowires networks are synthesized via a simple in situ hydrothermal process. These fibrous nanocomposites are hierarchically porous with high surface area and good electric conductivity, which makes them excellent material candidates for supercapacitors with high energy density and power density. Nanocomposites; with a capacitance up to 440 and 200 F g(-1) are achieved at current densities of 0.25 and 10 A g(-1), respectively. devices based on these nanocomposites and aqueous electrolyte exhibit an excellent charge/discharge capability, and high energy densities of 16 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 75 W kg(-1) and 5.5 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 3 750 W kg(-1). This performance is a significant improvement over current electrochemical capacitors and is highly competetive with Ni-MH batteries. This work provides a new platform for high-density electrical-energy storage for electric vehicles and other applications.

Toward Ultrahigh‐Rate Energy Storage of 3000 mV s −1 in Hollow Carbon: From Methodology to Surface‐to‐Bulk Synergy Insights

Abstract:Abstract Despite great efforts on economical and functionalized carbon materials, their scalable applications are still restricted by the unsatisfying energy storage capability under high‐rate conditions. Herein, theoretical and methodological insights for surface‐to‐bulk engineering of multi‐heteroatom‐doped hollow porous carbon (HDPC), with subtly designed Zn(OH)F nanoarrays as the template are presented. This fine‐tuned HDPC delivers an ultrahigh‐rate energy storage capability even at a scan rate of 3000 mV s −1 (fully charged within 0.34 s). It preserves a superior capacitance of 234 F g −1 at a super‐large current density of 100 A g −1 and showcases an ultralong cycling life without capacitance decay after 50 000 cycles. Through dynamic and theoretical analysis, the key role of in situ surface‐modified heteroatoms and defects in decreasing the K + ‐adsorption/diffusion energy barrier is clarified, which cooperates with the porous conductive highways toward enhanced surface‐to‐bulk activity and kinetics. In situ Raman aids in visualizing the reversibly dynamic adsorption/releasing of the electrolyte ions on the tailored carbon structure during the charge/discharge process. The potential of the design concept is further evidenced by the enhanced performances in water‐in‐salt electrolytes. This surface‐to‐bulk nanotechnology opens the path for developing high‐performance energy materials to better meet the practical requirements in the future.

Abstract:Renewable and environmentally friendly biomass‐based carbon electrode materials naturally possess fast ion transport, high adsorption, and excellent chemical stability for high‐performance energy‐storage devices. However, intelligently building the effectively biomass‐transferred carbon materials for the requirement of high energy density is still a big challenge to date. Here, a hierarchically divacancy defect building platform is reported for effectively biomass‐transferred and highly interconnected 3D dual‐activated porous carbon fibers (DACFs) based on the internal−external dual‐activation function of the pre‐embedded KOH and CO2 molecular. This uniquely interconnected frameworks not only fully provide the abundant active sites for ion interaction, but also efficiently guarantee the substantial accommodation for ion storage. Based on this, the as‐prepared DACFs‐based supercapacitors deliver a high energy density of 61.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 875 W kg−1 in the EMIMBF4 ionic liquid. This work not only provides a simple and efficient technique to enhance the energy density of carbon materials, but also probably promotes its additional application in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The development of high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices is critical for addressing energy crises and environmental pollution. Hence, the design and preparation of next-generation electrode materials have been gaining increasing attention. Recent progress has demonstrated that three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanomaterials are extremely promising candidates for the electrodes of electrochemical energy storage devices due to their unique structural advantages of interlinked architecture. Herein, recent advances in the scalable fabrication of 3D carbon nanofiber (CNF)-based materials and their applications for electrochemical energy storage devices are summarized. Some representational 3D CNF architectures, such as CNF gels, 3D CNF films, 3D CNF arrays, and their nanocomposites, are highlighted with regard to various applications, including supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), lithium-sulfur (Li-S), lithium-selenium (Li-Se), and metal-O-2 batteries, as well as other new battery systems. Finally, contemporary challenges in the scalable fabrication of 3D CNF architectures are outlined and a brief outlook to future studies is given. This review illustrates significant opportunities for the macroscopic fabrication of 3D CNF architectures, and therefore inspires new discoveries to promote the practical applications of 3D CNF architectures in electrochemical energy storage fields.

Abstract:With the rise of flexible electronics, the demand for advanced power sources has grown. Developing high-performance energy storage devices requires comprehensive consideration of various factors such as electrodes, electrolytes, and service conditions. Herein, a data-driven research framework is proposed to optimize the electrode-electrolyte system in supercapacitors. With the help of machine learning, we reveal the key factors affecting the capacitance performance of carbon-based materials. According to the algorithm analysis, a kind of 3D carbon network is prepared with controlled composition and structure, which is incorporated with a high-safety ionic liquid to obtain a supercapacitor device. This device with high energy density and impressive flexibility can maintain operational stability under extreme conditions such as humidity, shock, and localized damage. Overall, this work presents a typical pipeline for accelerating the design of energy-related devices.

Abstract:Since the industrial revolution, the consumption of fossil fuels has increased year by year, which has resulted in increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon capture, utilization and storage technology has received extensive attention as a technology for converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into high value-added materials. Carbon materials, as ideal materials for various energy storage devices, have attracted extensive research. Therefore, the selective reduction of CO2 to carbon materials with high added value is a promising solution, which can not only effectively alleviate the greenhouse effect, but also promote the development of the energy storage field. This review introduces the research work of high-value conversion of carbon dioxide into carbon materials and its impact on the performance of energy storage devices in recent years. In particular, we emphasize the reaction processes during CO2 conversion, which can build an understanding of the science and technology involved in the control of interfacial properties, microstructure, and pore structure of CO2-converted carbon nanomaterials. We also summarized the basic design principles for the application of carbon nanomaterials in the field of energy storage. The effect of the microstructure and interface properties of carbon materials converted from CO2 on the energy storage performance are further analyzed. Finally, prospects and discussions are made on the challenges of future development.
