Reading Young Goodman Brown from the Perspective of Schema Theory

Abstract:Schema Theory is first put forward by psychologist Bartlett on the basis of gestalt psychology in 1932. Many domestic people have widely applied schema theory to foreign language teaching,including English reading,listening,translation,writing and other fields,however there are few related research which the schema theory is used to interpretate literary works. This paper will read Hawthorne’s famous novel Young Goodman Brown ( hereinafter referred to as Brown) from the three classification of modern schema theory ——linguistic schema,content schema,formal schema,to explore its theme in a new aspect. It is significant both theoretically and practically. Theoretically it extends the application scope schema theory applying modern schema theory to the interpretation of literature work; pratically,it provides a new way literary works’interpretation.
