Abstract:Spray cooling has a wide application prospect in the heat dissipation of high-power devices due to its excellent heat transfer performance and low demand for working medium. In this work, an experimental setup was built to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the deionized water spray cooling in the non-boiling zone. Copper surfaces with different roughness conditions, as well as superhydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces, were introduced to study the influence of surface property on cooling performance. Results show that no prominent change in heat transfer coefficient occurs due to the variation of roughness in the working conditions discussed. Furthermore, the superhydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces experience a maximum reduction of 9.6% and 9.2% in heat transfer coefficient, respectively, compared with that of a smooth surface.

Abstract:Audible noise from transmission lines is mainly generated by corona discharge from defects and water droplets on the conductors' surface. Applying a superhydrophobic coating to the conductors can reduce corona discharge, thereby reducing the level of audible noise produced. In this paper, corona discharge and noise measurements from an untreated conductor and a conductor coated with superhydrophobic coatings were carried out in AC electric fields and continuous water spray. The coated conductors show higher partial discharge inception voltages (PDIV) than uncoated ones. PD magnitude and PD per cycle of the coated conductors are lower compared with uncoated conductors, especially at electric fields above 14 kV/cm. A linear correlation between overall sound pressure and total PD magnitude is established. The behavior of corona discharges from single droplets with various sizes and positions and associated droplet vibration were investigated and the local electric field enhancement was analyzed by finite element analysis to examine the influence of droplet size and position on electric field distribution. Superhydrophobic coatings result in reduced PD magnitude and number and therefore reduce audible noise generated. This is attributed to small sessile droplets forming rather than large pendant droplets.

Abstract:It has been shown that noise emissions from HV overhead line conductors can be reduced under rain conditions by making their surfaces superhydrophobic. The working environment makes ensuring the longevity of any treatment a major challenge. The degradation of various superhydrophobic surfaces generated by applying a superhydrophobic coating and patterning microscale channels is assessed under an AC electric field (18 kV/cm) with continuous water spray. By examining the droplet distribution on the surfaces during the degradation and the surface roughness before and after degradation, the authors demonstrate that no water droplets were found on the microscale patterned surface, but droplets were formed on the coated surface after degradation. The surface roughness reduction of the coated surface and microscale patterned surface was 29.8% and 11.3%, respectively, indicating that the microscale patterned surface has better durability than the superhydrophobic coating under the AC electric stress.

Abstract:Superhydrophobicity has received significant attention over the past three decades owing to its significant potential in self-cleaning, anti-icing and drag reduction surfaces, energy-harvesting devices, antibacterial coatings, and enhanced heat transfer applications. Superhydrophobicity can be obtained via the roughening of an intrinsically hydrophobic surface, the creation of a re-entrant geometry, or by the roughening of a hydrophilic surface followed by a conformal coating of a hydrophobic material. Intrinsically hydrophobic surfaces have poor thermophysical properties, such as thermal conductivity, and thus are not suitable for heat transfer applications. Re-entrant geometries, although versatile in applications where droplets are deposited, break down during spatially random nucleation and flood the surface. Chemical functionalization of rough metallic substrates, although promising, is not utilized because of the poor durability of conformal hydrophobic coatings. Here we develop a radically different approach to achieve stable superhydrophobicity. By utilizing laser processing and thermal oxidation of copper (Cu) to create a high surface energy hierarchical copper oxide (CuO), followed by repeatable and passive atmospheric adsorption of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), we show that stable superhydrophobicity with apparent advancing contact angles ≈160° and contact angle hysteresis as low as ≈20° can be achieved. We exploit the structure length scale and structure geometry-dependent VOC adsorption dynamics to rationally design CuO nanowires with enhanced superhydrophobicity. To gain an understanding of the VOC adsorption physics, we utilized X-ray photoelectron and ion mass spectroscopy to identify the chemical species deposited on our surfaces in two distinct locations: Urbana, IL, United States and Beijing, China. To test the stability of the atmosphere-mediated superhydrophobic surfaces during heterogeneous nucleation, we used high-speed optical microscopy to demonstrate the occurrence of dropwise condensation and stable coalescence-induced droplet jumping. Our work not only provides rational design guidelines for developing passively durable superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent flooding-resistance and self-healing capability but also sheds light on the key role played by the atmosphere in governing wetting.

Abstract:In recent years, the number of high-voltage transmission lines has sharply increased with the rapid development of modern industry. However, a corona discharge phenomenon often occurs on the exposed high-voltage transmission lines, leading to energy loss and noise pollution. Herein, we have proposed a facile spraying method to prepare a superhydrophobic and thermally conductive coating to restrain the corona discharge phenomenon of high-voltage transmission lines, with vinyl silicone oil and hydrogen silicone oil as the main materials and modified boron nitride (BN) as a thermal conductive filler. The obtained composite coating exhibited superhydrophobicity, with a high water contact angle of 162°. In addition, the coating also showed a good self-cleaning capability, non-adhesion capability, mechanical stability, and chemical stability. Owing to the construction of the thermally conductive pathways with BN, the thermal conductivity of the coating reached 1.05 W/m·K, which was beneficial to quickly dissipating the heat generated by the current heating effect. Moreover, the corona losses of the positive and negative electrodes under simulated rainy conditions were decreased by 7.43% and 8.05%, respectively. The findings of our work have provided a new strategy to effectively restrain the corona discharge phenomenon of transmission lines, showing great application potential in the field of high-voltage power networks.

Abstract:Overhead electric supply lines are subject to water and ice accumulation, causing noise and weight increase, and leading to faults or failures. In this research, micro-textures were laser-ablated on aluminium substrates representative of overhead line conductors to achieve superhydrophobic properties. Samples were then subjected to a range of tests to measure the resilience and durability of such surfaces to conditions experienced by overhead line conductors. Tests to examine thermal ageing, thermal cycling, UV exposure, long term ambient outdoor environment exposure, and corona exposure testing were conducted and the evolution of surface superhydrophobicity was quantified. A high degree of resilience was observed for most of the testing. The feasibility of manufacturing upscale is discussed in addition to optimising test methods.

Abstract:Audible noise (AN) has been the main concern in recent years when considering electromagnetic environmental impact in designing overhead lines (OHLs). Driven by the increased demand of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines, a novel corona cage experiment is built in association with an acoustic simulation using the finite element method (FEM). The characteristics of the acoustic wave propagation within the testing hall are analyzed using FEM, and the optimized locations for AN detection are determined. On the basis of complying with measurement standards, the location of the measurement is selected to be closer to the sound source and further away from the reflecting surface, to generate more accurate measurement results. In the designated test hall for this paper, the influence of refraction and reflection of sound waves is not obvious. The attenuation of sound waves below 4 kHz is negligible, while for higher frequencies such as 4 kHz and 8 kHz it is significant. Finally, FEM simulation is used to optimize the location for measurement microphones, and further experiments are carried out to verify its accuracy.

Abstract:The audible noise (AN) of DC transmission lines is a crucial factor affecting environmental assessment and electromagnetic design. In recent years, the public has paid increasing attention to the audible noise after the emergence of the HVDC technique. This paper emphatically reviewed the work investigating audible noise characteristics in both time and frequency domains, especially the correlation between sound and discharge. The proposed mechanisms of DC audible noise and the mitigating techniques are summarized, including the noise generation process, the physical models, the measurement method, and the mitigating technologies. It is found that the existing literature mainly focused on the prediction and characteristics of AN, the environmental factors which influence AN, and the methods to minimize AN emission. However, existing achievements still need to be improved to fully understand the mechanism of AN generation and solve the adaptability problem of AN prediction methods. The following aspects are valuable in future research: The correlation between audible noise and other corona effects will help solve the problem of difficulty in measuring audible noise in field condition; The corona discharge mechanism and weather resistance anti-corona coating when raindrops are attached to the surface of the transmission line, which will help guide the development and application of anti-corona coatings for the transmission line. Future research should also understand the mechanism of sound wave generation when considering the space charge effect.

Abstract:The water droplets on the surface of the overhead line (OHL) conductors are subject to an intensive electric field, which induces electric force on the charged liquid surface. Under the combined action of the surface tension as well as the electric force, movement and deformation can be observed on those water droplets. These result in a re-distribution of charge density on the liquid surface and therefore a re-distribution of electric force. In this paper, in order to strengthen the understanding of this complex multi-physics problem of interaction and mutual coupling, the vibration characteristics of water droplets under alternating electric fields is studied using the finite element method (FEM). Parameters such as the volume size of the water droplet, static/dynamic contact angle between the water droplet and conductor surface and voltage level are studied in relation to the vibration characteristics. The reproducible correlation between the phase and amplitude of the water droplet vibration on the surface of the conductor and the applied voltage is established. According to the calculated instantaneous electric field strength, it is explained that protrusions such as water droplets are the starting point of corona discharge.

Abstract:Corona Audible Noise is a major factor regarding the public acceptance of overhead lines. In this article, 2-conductor bundle is used to study the influence of rain on AC corona discharge. Rainfall is simulated by a large rain dispenser, which can be adjusted over a wide range. Using this experimental setup, the transient AC audible noise and corona current pulse characteristics under rainfall condition were studied. It was found that there are three different stages of audible noise level during rain, in which the audible noise level during the steady state stage is the highest. This transient characteristic could be explained by two different types of corona discharges for discharges above and below the conductor. Furthermore, the steady state audible noise level was studied under a wide range of rain rates and applied surface electric fields. It was found that the sensitivity of the audible noise level to the rain rate decreases with the applied electric field. This finding is of vital importance as the rain intensity is regarded as one of the most important factors influencing the HVAC audible noise, and a higher rain rate is usually considered to cause a higher audible noise level. A possible explanation of this phenomenon is attributed to the effect of a "critical number of corona sources", which is well known from DC corona and possible evidence is provided based on long-exposure photos.

Abstract:For the connection of remote energy sources, HVDC offers higher efficiency and flexibility compared to conventional HVAC. As the acceptance for overhead lines in Europe is often low, the detailed understanding of its environmental effects, such as audible noise is of crucial importance. Still, only few experimental studies have investigated HVDC corona. Recent publications have demonstrated, that existing prediction models for DC audible noise show strong deviations when extrapolated for higher surface gradients. While audible noise is considered negligible in rain, research has shown that the discharge amplitudes increase significantly during transitions from dry to wet weather and vice-versa. In this study, the corona current and audible noise are investigated for a large range of surface gradients and rain rates. A special focus is set on the behavior during rain onset and dry-off. While the corona current increased during rain, the measured audible noise was significantly higher during the transitions before and after the steady state. The duration of these transition periods varied with rain rate and surface gradient. The observed effects are explained using corona pulse patterns and UV data. Compared to these measurements, existing audible noise prediction models were found to overestimate the sensitivity regarding the electric field.

Abstract:In this paper, a thermal method for anti-icing the suspension overhead insulators which could limit the power loss are proposed and tested. A certain kind of semiconducting room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber was used to configure the surface resistivity of the insulator. By applying this material to the bottom side of the insulator, the surface discharge at the upper surface was increased when there is water and ice on the upper surface. And the power loss is limited when the upper surface is dry. The anti-icing effect of this method on insulator strings for 110 kV transmission line was tested in a climate chamber, and the results showed that the formation of ice on the coating was completely prevented.

Abstract:Condensation heat transfer at superhydrophobic surfaces has raised a lot of interest due to their potential application in atmospheric water harvesting and air-conditioning. In moist air, the condensation heat transfer using a superhydrophobic surface can be negatively affected by the existence of a large amount of non-condensable gas, namely, the dry air. Besides, the air flow pattern would substantially affect the surface condensation rate due to the convective mass transfer of water vapor. In this study, the condensation regime of a superhydrophobic aluminum surface vertically positioned in quiescent moist air was visualized and the condensation rate was experimentally investigated. Condensation experiments were also performed by using hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and superhydrophilic surfaces for comparison. The condensation rate of the superhydrophobic surface was consistent with that of other surfaces, though the condensation regimes of the four surfaces were quite different. The average deviation between the experimental condensation rate and the empirical correlation of natural convection heat and mass transfer was within 12%. The result indicates that vapor transfer induced by diffusion and convection in the boundary layer rather than the heat transfer resistance associated with condensate dominates the condensation heat and mass transfer between the moist air and the superhydrophobic surface.

Abstract:Corona phenomenon and the corresponding electromagnetic environment have been the bottle-neck and the biggest obstacle for the design of Ultra HVDC transmission line in high altitude area.The audible noise(NA) generated by the corona is one of the main restrict factor.In high altitude area it is always company with the strong wind weather,the influence of the which on the NA cannot be ignored.Based on the 800 m length bipolar test line which is build by National Engineering Laboratory for UHV Technology(Kunming) in the altitude 2100 m,measurement of the NA was carried out for a long term.Combining the measuring results and theory analyzing,this paper studied the characteristics of NA generated by the test line,and analyzed the influence of wind velocity and wind direction on the lateral profile.

Abstract:The icing on overhead transmission lines is one of the largest threats to the safe operation of electric power systems. Compared with other security accidents in the electric industry, a sudden ice disaster could cause the most serious losses to electric power grids. Among the numerous de-icing and anti-icing techniques for application, direct current ice-melting and mechanical de-icing schemes require power cuts and other restrictive conditions. Superhydrophobic coating technology has been widely focused for good anti-icing properties, low cost and wide application range. However, the special structure of curved transmission lines, complicated service environments, and variated electric performance could significantly limit the application of superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings on overhead transmission lines. In particular, superhydrophobic surfaces can be achieved by combining the rough micro-nano structure and modification agents with low surface energy. Compared with superhydrophobic coatings, superhydrophobic surfaces will not increase the weight of the substrate and have good durability and stability in maintaining the robust structure to repeatedly resist aging, abrasion, corrosion and corona damages, etc. Therefore, this review summarizes the theoretical basis of anti-icing behavior and mechanisms, influencing factors of anti-icing properties, potential techniques of superhydrophobic surfaces on transmission lines, and, finally, presents future development challenges and prospects of superhydrophobic surfaces in the anti-icing protection of overhead transmission lines.

Study on the Reduction of Condensation Risks on the Radiant Cooling Ceiling with Superhydrophobic Treatment

Abstract:In this paper, the size of droplets departing from the superhydrophobic surface and conventional aluminum alloy surfaces was studied experimentally. It showed that the coalescence-induced jumping condensate droplets departing from the superhydrophobic surface has a radius of below 300 mu m, and the radii of the gravity-induced falling droplets from conventional aluminum alloy surfaces range from 2000 mu m to 7000 mu m. During droplets' dripping from radiant ceiling to human skin, numerical simulation also indicated that the change of the droplet size is rather small and can be neglected. Furthermore, the human sensory threshold size for fallen droplets was found to be a radius of 325 mu m via a psychological experiment conducted with 30 volunteers. Therefore, these results revealed that the superhydrophobic surface can significantly reduce condensation risks of radiant cooling ceiling systems. This is because the radii of coalescence-induced fallen condensate droplets from superhydrophobic surfaces are below this threshold, whereas gravity-induced falling droplets from conventional radiant ceiling surfaces can be perceived with a probability of over 95%. Abstract:The electromagnetic environment of Direct Current (DC) transmission lines has attracted the attention of many experts and scholars at home and abroad, but how to suppress the electromagnetic interference is a brand new topic. Relies on the bipolar DC test lines of Ultra high voltage Engineering (Kunming) National Engineering Laboratory, the electromagnetic interference suppression measures for the UHV DC transmission lines in high altitude has been studyed by erected the shielding wire under the line. First the tower design and suspension point of shield conductor were choosed through the simulation calculation, and then the shield wire was retrofited with different sizes and different layout under the positive wire to field test. From which, the shielding effectiveness of electromagnetic environmental parameters (radio interference (RI), resultant electric field (Es) and ion current density (Js)) was obtained.

Abstract:Audible noise of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines is a significant parameter for electromagnetic environment and has caused wide public concern. In order to offer a comprehensive statistical evaluation of audible noise for HVDC projects, a continuous test platform of audible noise considering various weather conditions has been built to record automatically. The long-term statistical measurements have been carried out based on the full scale HVDC operating transmission lines. The whole audible noise test platform has a low uncertainty, less than 1%. The data base is constructed using effective audible noise data. The prediction model of audible noise by using data fitting based on the linear mixed effect model (LME) which mainly involves data grouping, model fitting, parameters calibration and model validation. In addition, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm is introduced to select the variables which are the influence factors of audible noise. Lastly, the calibration of prediction model is proposed to enhance the prediction accuracy.

Abstract:The corona performance and the electromagnetic environment of the transmission system has become a crucial issue that has been taken into consideration in the line design, and among which audible noise (AN) is one of the most important factors. The wind in the high altitude area is mostly strong, and could greatly influence the AN. This paper, based on the high altitude HDVC test line, studied the characteristics of AN generated by the transmission line, and analyzed the influence of wind velocity and wind direction on the AN lateral profile.
