Abstract:We classify isomorphism and chain homotopy equivalence classes of finitely generated $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}$ graded free chain complexes over $\frac{\mathbb{F}[U,V]}{(UV)}$. As a corollary, we establish that every link Floer complex $CFL(Y, L)$ over the ring $\frac{\mathbb{F}[U,V]}{(UV)}$ splits uniquely as a direct sum of snake complexes and local systems. This generalizes and extends the results of Petkova and Dai, Hom, Stoffregen, and Truong. We give the first example of an essentially infinite knot Floer-like complex, i.e., a complex satisfying all formal properties of link Floer complexes of knots in $S^3$ and whose chain homotopy equivalence class does not admit a representative of the form $C \otimes_{\mathbb{F}} \mathbb{F}[U,V]$. Finally, we also describe the first example of a knot Floer-like complex that does not admit a simultaneously vertically and horizontally simplified basis.

Abstract:We apply sutured Floer homology techniques to study the knot and link Floer homologies of various links with annuli embedded in their exteriors. Our main results include, for large $m$, characterizations of links with the same link Floer homology as $(n,nm)$-cables of $L$-space knots or the same knot Floer homology as $(2,2m)$-cables of $L$-space knots. Note that Knot Floer homology carries less grading data than Link Floer homology, so the latter characterizations are stronger than former. These characterizations yield some new link detection results.

Abstract:Martin showed that link Floer homology detects braid axes. In this paper we extend this result to give a topological characterisation of links which are almost braided from the point of view of link Floer homology. The result is inspired by work of Baldwin-Sivek and Li-Ye on nearly fibered knots. Applications include that Khovanov homology detects the Whitehead link and $L7n2$, as well as infinite families of detection results for link Floer homology and annular Khovanov homology.

Abstract:There is a generalization of Heegaard-Floer theory from ${\mathfrak{gl}}_{1|1}$ to other Lie (super)algebras $^L{\mathfrak{g}}$. The corresponding category of A-branes is solvable explicitly and categorifies quantum $U_q(^L{\mathfrak{g}})$ link invariants. The theory was discovered in \cite{A1,A2}, using homological mirror symmetry. It has novel features, including equivariance and, if $^L{\mathfrak{g}} \neq {\mathfrak{gl}}_{1|1}$, coefficients in categories. In this paper, we describe the theory and how it is solved in detail in the two simplest cases: the ${\mathfrak{gl}}_{1|1}$ theory itself, categorifying the Alexander polynomial, and the ${\mathfrak{su}}_{2}$ theory, categorifying the Jones polynomial. Our approach to solving the theory is new, even in the familiar ${\mathfrak{gl}}_{1|1}$ case.

Abstract:This article is a standalone introduction to sutured Floer homology for graduate students in geometry and topology. It is divided into three parts. The first part is an introductory level exposition of Lagrangian Floer homology. The second part is a construction of Heegaard Floer homology as a special, and slightly modified, case of Lagrangian Floer homology. The third part covers the background on sutured manifolds, the definition of sutured Floer homology, as well as a discussion of its most basic properties and implications (it detects the product, behaves nicely under surface decompositions, defines an asymmetric polytope, its Euler characteristic is computable using Fox calculus).

Abstract:In this paper, we study the skein exact sequence for links via the exact surgery triangle of link Floer homology and compare it with other skein exact sequences given by Ozsváth and Szabó. As an application, we use the skein exact sequence to study the splitting number and splitting maps for links. In particular, we associate the splitting maps for the torus link $T(n, n)$ to integer points in the $(n-1)$-dimensional permutahedron, and obtain the link Floer homology of an $n$-component homology nontrivial unlink in $S^{1}\times S^{2}$.

The cosmetic crossing conjecture for split links

Abstract:Given a band sum of a split two-component link along a nontrivial band, we obtain a family of knots indexed by the integers by adding any number of full twists to the band. We show that the knots in this family have the same Heegaard knot Floer homology and the same instanton knot Floer homology. In contrast, a generalization of the cosmetic crossing conjecture predicts that the knots in this family are all distinct. We verify this prediction by showing that any two knots in this family have distinct Khovanov homology. Along the way, we prove that each of the three knot homologies detects the trivial band.

Abstract:We give some new link detection results for link Floer homology, Khovanov homology and annular Khovanov homology. The links we detect arise via different closure operations on $3$-braids. Examples of our results include that link Floer homology detects the Mazur link, that annular Khovanov homology detects the Mazur pattern, and that Khovanov homology detects L6a2 and L9n15. The Mazur pattern detection result depends on a new bound on the rank of the annular Khovanov homology of certain links.

Abstract:Let L be a link in an integral homology three-sphere. We give a description of the Heegaard Floer homology of integral surgeries on L in terms of some data associated to L, which we call a complete system of hyperboxes for L. Roughly, a complete systems of hyperboxes consists of chain complexes for (some versions of) the link Floer homology of L and all its sublinks, together with several chain maps between these complexes. Further, we introduce a way of presenting closed four-manifolds with b_2^+ > 1 by four-colored framed links in the three-sphere. Given a link presentation of this kind for a four-manifold X, we then describe the Ozsvath-Szabo mixed invariants of X in terms of a complete system of hyperboxes for the link. Finally, we explain how a grid diagram produces a particular complete system of hyperboxes for the corresponding link.

Abstract:For every $n \ge 3$, we construct 2-component links in $S^{n+1}$ that are a split by an integer homology $n$-sphere, but not by $S^n$. In the special case $n=3$, i.e. that of 2-links in $S^4$, we produce an infinite family of links $L_\ell$ and of integer homology spheres $Y_\ell$ such that the link $L_\ell$ is (topologically or smoothly) split by $Y_\ell$ and by no other integer homology sphere in the family.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the work of the second author and prove a grading shifting property, in sutured monopole and instanton Floer theories, for general balanced sutured manifolds. This result has a few consequences. First, we offer an algorithm that computes the Floer homologies of a family of sutured handle-bodies. Second, we obtain a canonical decomposition of sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies and build polytopes for these two theories, which was initially achieved by Juhász for sutured (Heegaard) Floer homology. Third, we establish a Thurston-norm detection result for monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, which were introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka. The same result was originally proved by Ozsváth and Szabó for link Floer homology. Last, we generalize the construction of minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homology, which was initially done for knots by the second author, to the case of links. Along with the construction of polytopes, we also proved that, for a balanced sutured manifold with vanishing second homology, the rank of the sutured monopole or instanton Floer homology bounds the depth of the balanced sutured manifold. As a corollary, we obtain an independent proof that monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, as mentioned above, both detect fibred knots in $S^3$. This result was originally achieved by Kronheimer and Mrowka.

Abstract:We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associated to the complement of a Seifert surface.

Abstract:We investigate symmetry properties of peculiar modules, a Heegaard Floer invariant of 4-ended tangles which the author introduced in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1712.05050" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1712.05050">arXiv:1712.05050</a>]. In particular, we give an almost complete answer to the geography problem for components of peculiar modules of tangles. As a main application, we show that Conway mutation preserves the hat flavour of the relatively $\delta$-graded Heegaard Floer theory of links.

Abstract:To a nullhomologous knot $K$ in a 3-manifold $Y$, knot Floer homology associates a bigraded chain complex over $\mathbb{F}[U,V]$ as well as a collection of flip maps; we show that this data can be interpretted as a collection of decorated immersed curves in the marked torus. This is inspired by earlier work of the author with Rasmussen and Watson, showing that bordered Heegaard Floer invariants $\widehat{\mathit{CFD}}$ of manifolds with torus boundary can be interpreted in a similar way. Indeed, if we restrict the construction in this paper to the $UV = 0$ truncation of the knot Floer complex for knots in $S^3$ with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients, which is equivalent to $\widehat{\mathit{CFD}}$ of the knot complement, we get precisely those curves; this paper then provides an entirely bordered-free treatment of those curves in the case of knot complements, which may appeal to readers unfamiliar with bordered Floer homology. On the other hand, the knot Floer complex is a stronger invariant than $\widehat{\mathit{CFD}}$ of the complement, capturing "minus" information while $\widehat{\mathit{CFD}}$ is only a "hat" flavor invariant. We show that this extra information is realized by adding an additional decoration, a bounding chain, to the immersed multicurves. We also give geometric surgery formulas, showing that $HF^-$ of rational surgeries on nullhomologous knots and the knot Floer complex of dual knots in integer surgeries can be computed by taking Floer homology of the appropriate decorated curves in the marked torus. A section of the paper is devoted to a giving a combinatorial construction of Floer homology of Lagrangians with bounding chains in marked surfaces, which may be of independent interest.

Hard diagrams of split links

Abstract:Deformations of knots and links in ambient space can be studied combinatorially on their diagrams via local modifications called Reidemeister moves. While it is well-known that, in order to move between equivalent diagrams with Reidemeister moves, one sometimes needs to insert excess crossings, there are significant gaps between the best known lower and upper bounds on the required number of these added crossings. In this article, we study the problem of turning a diagram of a split link into a split diagram, and we show that there exist split links with diagrams requiring an arbitrarily large number of such additional crossings. More precisely, we provide a family of diagrams of split links, so that any sequence of Reidemeister moves transforming a diagram with $c$ crossings into a split diagram requires going through a diagram with $\Omega(\sqrt{c})$ extra crossings. Our proof relies on the framework of bubble tangles, as introduced by Lunel and de Mesmay, and a technique of Chambers and Liokumovitch to turn homotopies into isotopies in the context of Riemannian geometry.

Rank Bounds in Link Floer Homology and Detection Results

Abstract:Viewing the BRAID invariant as a generator of link Floer homology we generalise work of Baldwin-Vela-Vick to obtain rank bounds on the next to top grading of knot Floer homology. These allow us to classify links with knot Floer homology of rank at most eight, and prove a variant of a classification of links with Khovanov homology of low rank due to Xie-Zhang. In another direction we use a variant of Ozsváth-Szabó classification of $E_2$ collapsed $\mathbb{Z} \oplus\mathbb{Z}$ filtered chain complexes to show that knot Floer homology detects $T(2,8)$ and $T(2,10)$. Combining these techniques with the spectral sequences of Batson-Seed, Dowlin, and Lee we can show that Khovanov homology likewise detects $T(2,8)$ and $T(2,10)$.

Abstract:We prove for the first time that knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology can detect non-fibered knots, and that HOMFLY homology detects infinitely many such knots; these theories were previously known to detect a mere six knots, all fibered. These results rely on our main technical theorem, which gives a complete classification of genus-1 knots in the 3-sphere whose knot Floer homology in the top Alexander grading is 2-dimensional. We discuss applications of this classification to problems in Dehn surgery which are carried out in two sequels. These include a proof that $0$-surgery characterizes infinitely many knots, generalizing results of Gabai from his 1987 resolution of the Property R Conjecture.

Abstract: In this article, the authors review what the Floer homology is and what it does in symplectic geometry both in the closed string and in the open string context. In the first case, the authors will explain how the chain level Floer theory leads to the $C^0$ symplectic invariants of Hamiltonian flows and to the study of topological Hamiltonian dynamics. In the second case, the authors explain how Floer's original construction of Lagrangian intersection Floer homology is obstructed in general as soon as one leaves the category of exact Lagrangian submanifolds. They will survey construction, obstruction and promotion of the Floer complex to the $A_\infty$ category of symplectic manifolds. Some applications of this general machinery to the study of the topology of Lagrangian embeddings in relation to symplectic topology and to mirror symmetry are also reviewed.

Abstract:Using contact-geometric techniques and sutured Floer homology, we present an alternate formulation of the minus and plus version of knot Floer homology. We further show how natural constructions in the realm of contact geometry give rise to much of the formal structure relating the various versions of Heegaard Floer homology. In addition, to a Legendrian or transverse knot K in a contact manifold (Y,\xi), we associate distinguished classes EHL(K) in the minus-version of knot floer homology and EHIL(K) in the plus version, which are each invariant under Legendrian or transverse isotopies of K. The distinguished class EHL is shown to agree with the Legendrian/transverse invariant defined by Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz, and Szabo despite a strikingly dissimilar definition. While our definitions and constructions only involve sutured Floer homology and contact geometry, the identification of our invariants with known invariants uses bordered sutured Floer homology to make explicit computations of maps between sutured Floer homology groups.
