Abstract:The novel Everything I Never Told You by contemporary Chinese-American author Celeste Ng portrays the challenges faced by a cross-cultural family consisting of James Lee, a Chinese-American university professor, and his white wife Marilyn, in 1970s America. She explores the intergenerational trauma caused by cultural conflicts. Centered around the death of their daughter Lydia, the novel delves into the intergenerational trauma experienced by the members of this cross-cultural family due to familial and societal conflicts. It also depicts how the family members rebuild trust, reconcile with each other, and heal from their trauma. Through this portrayal, the novel highlights the pressing need, amidst cultural clashes and social transformations, to embrace an inclusive and forward-looking perspective to embrace and adapt to the transformative changes.

Abstract:Celeste Ng’s novel Everything I Never Told You (2014) has been said to combine some stock ingredients of literary thrillers with other less customary features that complicate its classification in that genre. Although we learn from page one that the protagonist of the novel, sixteen-year-old Lydia Lee, is dead, discovering who is behind the possible murder of this Chinese American girl proves to be one of the lesser mysteries in the story. While the reader remains intrigued by the forces/people that may have driven Lydia to her demise, other enigmas—related to the other members of the Lee family—keep cropping up and turn out to be closely linked to the protagonist’s fate. This article explores the secret-saturated structure of the novel, which moves back and forth between the Lees’ speculations about Lydia’s death, the impact that the event has on their lives and the protagonist’s own version of the story. Ng delves deep into the issues of gender, race and other types of otherness that spawn most of the secrets driving the story. Assisted by theories expounded by Frank Kermode, Derek Attridge and other scholars, the article highlights the centrality of family secrets as a structuring principle in Ng’s novel.
What Silence Says: Family, Race, Identity, and the American Dream in Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You

Abstract:This research paper attempts to legitimize contemporary fiction author, Celeste Ng, and her writing as worthy of inquiry in the field of literature. This paper explores Ng’s debut novel Everything I Never Told You and the use of silence in the text in conjunction with the theme of identity. Everything I Never Told You complicates and frustrates the conventional boundaries of ethnic literature and family drama by interverting stereotypes. Ng utilizes silence throughout the novel, highlighting how damaging silence can be to a family through the death of the Lee’s middle daughter, Lydia. However, Ng also deploys the use of healing silence as the remaining family members come back together to reconcile. Further complications with silence arise when readers begin to examine the racialization of the American Dream. Celeste Ng reveals that silence ensnares identity through the relationships of the Lee family and their individual failures with the American Dream. Demonstrating destructive qualities before Lydia’s death and healing components after, Ng utilizes silence not only as a coping mechanism against the racialized American Dream, but also as an act of resistance.

Abstract:Celeste Ng’s debut novel Everything I Never Told You describes the depressive situation of an interracial family in America. Surrounding a sixteen-year-old girl Lydia’s death, the novel portrays the family’s secrets and suffering on racial and gender issues. As every family member in the novel attempts to run away, this thesis aims to clear the theme of escape in the novel. Through analyzing the essence of their escape and exploring the hidden reasons for the escape, the paper reveals the fatal blow of racial discrimination and gender prejudice on ethnic and gender minorities in America.

The researcher investigates moral values through novels because today the moral crisis among youths tends to increase. The data analysis technique in this study is a qualitative data analysis technique. The result of the study is the researcher found seven moral values in the novel namely honesty, loyalty, obedience, love and affection, independence, responsibility, and persistence.

Abstract:This paper delves into the representation of intergenerational trauma within Asian American literature, focusing on Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You, Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior, and the critiques by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Ng’s work is analyzed for its nuanced portrayal of trauma as an intrinsic part of the Asian American experience, distinguishing it from earlier works that, as Nguyen argues, tend to conform to the “model minority” stereotype. The paper examines Ng’s sensitive unpacking of trauma, particularly its non-punctual, systemic nature, and its intergenerational transmission, especially in parent-child relationships. Additionally, it contrasts Ng’s approach with Kingston’s, exploring how trauma in The Woman Warrior is masked by cultural reinterpretation and the desire to please dominant Western narratives. By employing the theories of Cathy Caruth, Naomi Mandel, and Greg Forter, the essay argues that Ng repositions trauma as a core theme in Asian American literature, filling a significant gap left by previous works and redefining the narrative of Asian American identity and heritage.

Abstract:Risniani Ganarsih. 152301773. 2019. The Flouting Maxims of Cooperative Principle in The Novel “Everything I Never Told You” (Discourse Analysis of The Novel). This study deals with Flouting Maxims of Cooperative Principle in Everything I Never Told You novel written by Celeste Ng. The data is from the characters’ utterances within conversation which flouting maxims occurred. Grice’s theory is used to conduct this study. The focuses of this study are to find out the types of flouting maxim and to find out the type of maxim is mostly flouted in Everything I Never Told You novel. This study used content analysis as a method and qualitative research as an approach. After analyzing the data, the researcher found 56 types of flouting maxims from 42 data. There are 7 flouting maxims of quality, 21 flouting maxims of quantity, 25 flouting maxims of relation, and 3 flouting maxims of manner. Maxim of relation is selected by the researcher as the maxim is mostly flouted from the charcacters’ utterances in this novel. Abstract:This study purposed in revealing : (1) the reflection of dysfunctional family in Celeste Ng’s “Everything I Never Told You” and (2) the psychological state of Lydia as the child of dysfunctional family in Celeste Ng’s “Everything I Never Told You”. Descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the novel entitled “Everything I Never Told You” written by Celeste Ng as the object of research. The method of collecting data in this research includes reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The method of analysing the data are done by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. Dysfunctional family concept and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis are used in analyzing the data. The finding shows that : (1) there are some reflections indicate the dysfunctional family in Celeste Ng’s “Everything I Never Told You”, such as, the cause of dysfunctional family shown by authoritarian parents, the characteristics of dysfunctional family shown by prolonged conflict and perfectionist expectation toward children, and the type of dysfunctional family in form of chronic conflict family; (2) the psychological state of Lydia as the child of dysfunctional family is illustrated by isolated and empty feeling, dependent due to fear of being abandoned, super responsibility by adopting the enabler type, feel guilty when looking for satisfaction for herself, and the ego defense mechanism in the form of regression. The psychological state of Lydia is described through the apparatus in her unconscious mind, there are, the id, the superego, and the ego.

Abstract:This study aims to analyze Lydia's alienation in Ng's everything I never told you through a Marxist perspective, focusing on societal factors contributing to her isolation. The significance of this study lies in uncovering the cultural determinants of alienation, offering insights into the broader implications of these themes in contemporary society. Using a Marxist framework, the study examines how class structures, racial discrimination, and capitalist ideologies shape Lydia's psychological state and her interactions with her family and society. Findings suggest that Lydia's alienation is deeply influenced by the oppressive societal expectations and racial prejudices that stem from capitalist and classist structures, leading to her sense of estrangement and eventual tragic fate. This research highlights the need to critically examine societal pressures and their impact on individual well-being, particularly within marginalized communities.

Abstract:In Celeste Ng’s debut novel Everything I Never Told You, both the two generations’ mother-daughter relationships witness the maternal use of the daughter as “obscure maternal double”, as the daughter unwittingly suffers from the mother’s narcissistic deprivation in the name of maternal love. This thesis attempts to illustrate that the profound shaping motivation of the daughter’s tragedy lies in the mother’s desire and practice of power-participation in a patriarchal society. Under the phallocentric culture that strangles female voice, the mother-figure establishes identity and gains authority by materializing her daughter as a receptive vase, strangling her development of an autonomous sense of self through the operation of doll complex and symbiotic illusion. This traps her into a dualistic power paradigm, which makes her voluntarily or subconsciously play the role of a maintainer and a conspirator to patriarchy, and this power-operation mode bears great generational continuity from mothers to daughters.

Abstract:Ishguruo's most recent work, Never Let Me Go, is a science fiction about clones. A large amount of criticism on this novel concentrates on the plot design in which the protagonists and other clones have no sense of "defection". It is possible to see, however, Ishguruo is utilizing the eye of the clone to explore modern human existence, unclosing the inescapability of the tragic individual life, the relativity of freedom, and the courage to seek freedom and value of existence. This paper draws on existentialism to read Never Let Me Go so as to open up a new level of dialogue.

Abstract:This chapter offers an enlightening 5E lesson plan that guides ELA teachers through a novel study using excerpts from All the Light We Cannot See, while also directing science teachers through a series of simulations and exercises designed to teach students about the basic properties of waves, including the electromagnetic spectrum. Focusing on science and literacy integration, this chapter also draws attention to the fact that the unit is designed to be taught simultaneously by each content-area teacher or, alternatively, at separate times during the year. The unit provides students with opportunities to explore all components of 5E (engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation) in both disciples. Lessons are directly aligned with CCSS and NGSS standards, respectively. Additionally, the unit provides all necessary resources, including handouts and appendices, for teachers to successfully teach the unit for student mastery.
