Abstract:The telling of stories in moral education has a long and universal tradition. In the study of moral development, however, the uses and power of narrative in both forming and conveying a moral sense have been largely ignored. Mark Tappan and Lyn Brown argue that narrative is central to the study as well as to the teaching of morality, and that acknowledgment of authorship of moral choices, actions, and feelings marks the endpoint of the development of moral sensibility. Children's storytelling, they believe, creates authorship when the audience is responsive and the story told represents real experience. By presenting thoughtful and challenging evidence for the role of storytelling, these authors represent a perspective much needed in the field of moral development.

Abstract:Life stories play a crucial role in migration discourses: they serve as testimony in journalistic work, form the core of ambassadorial storytelling by NGOs (non-governmental organizations), and inspire collaborative projects initiated by writers seeking to express their solidarity. However, this article argues, drawing on migrants’ experiences for such purposes also creates an ethical dilemma: speaking about –or even for –rather than with migrants assigns them a passive role and tends to recycle existing narrative patterns and templates. Starting with a generic distinction between what we call stories of migration (various forms of self-expression granting migrants full authority and control over their narrative) and narratives on migration (external perspectives, e.g. academic, economic, political, and legal approaches, where lived experience doesn’t matter), we explore the extensive middle ground of hybrid forms between these two extremes– i.e. different kinds of vicarious storytelling–before discussing their ethical implications. We further show how the idea of the level playing field, a key concept in economics, can be used in transdisciplinary research projects to establish level telling fields (LTFs), i.e. , communicative spaces characterized by a fair dialogue on an equal footing for all participants.

Abstract:When executives need to persuade an audience, most try to build a case with facts, statistics, and some quotes from authorities. In other words, they resort to "companyspeak," the tools of rhetoric they have been trained to use. In this conversation with HBR, Robert McKee, the world's best-known screenwriting lecturer, argues that executives can engage people in a much deeper--and ultimately more convincing--way if they toss out their Power-Point slides and memos and learn to tell good stories. As human beings, we make sense of our experiences through stories. But becoming a good storyteller is hard. It requires imagination and an understanding of what makes a story worth telling. All great stories deal with the conflict between subjective expectations and an uncooperative objective reality. They show a protagonist wrestling with antagonizing forces, not a rosy picture of results meeting expectations--which no one ends up believing. Consider the CEO of a biotech start-up that has discovered a chemical compound to prevent heart attacks. He could make a pitch to investors by offering up market projections, the business plan, and upbeat, hypothetical scenarios. Or he could captivate them by telling the story of his father, who died of a heart attack, and of the CEO's subsequent struggle against various antagonists--nature, the FDA, potential rivals--to bring to market the effective, low-cost test that might have prevented his father's death. Good storytellers are not necessarily good leaders, but they do share certain traits. Both are self-aware, and both are skeptics who realize that all people--and institutions--wear masks. Compelling stories can be found behind those masks.

Abstract:Drawing on concepts from narratology and stylistics, this article examines narrativity and creativity in an interactive oral storytelling context where the teller engages the audience directly in the storytelling process by calling for their outward responses and then incorporating these responses into her representations of events and characters. I analyse one storytelling performance of a contemporary professional storyteller as an example of interactive storytelling and discuss how she established narrativity and displayed creativity in the process of co-constructing an oral story with an adult audience. Challenges an oral storyteller may face in this process are also discussed.

Abstract:Narrative forms are a tool for organizing lived experience, reflecting both the structure of the experience in the world, and the individual’s reactions to that experience; Labov (1972) termed these as referential and evaluative dimensions. We investigated how four individuals narratively structure their stories across these formal narrative components in their high- and low-point narratives in relation to stability of life story event selection. Two participants showed a consistent, referentially elaborated and/or evaluatively dramatic narrative style, and also narrated the same culturally canonically scripted events over time. In contrast, two participants displayed less referentially elaborate, evaluative narrative styles which were specifically less consistent in the low-point narratives, and each narrated different high and low points over time. We posit that individual and cultural differences in the stability of the content of life stories might be related to the consistency of narrative style used for the life story. We discuss the possible roles of conventionality of life courses, canonicity of life stories, individualistic versus communal outlook, and rehearsal of a stock of life story anecdotes.

Abstract:In this study, nine Canadian competitive youth sport coaches' challenges and successes in creating safer and more inclusive sport spaces were explored through individual pre- and postseason interviews and an in-season reflective portfolio of their coaching experiences. From a story analyst approach, the central narrative theme of "it's my responsibility to enact change" was identified. A storyteller approach was then used to communicate the meanings of the central theme as accessible creative nonfiction composite stories: When is it okay to intervene?; burning out . . . it's consuming me; and breaking through . . . it's necessary work. Building on previous research, the findings demonstrate how coaches' critical praxes shift on a continuum of awareness and advocacy. The creative nonfictions may be used by coach educators and mental performance consultants to help coaches and leaders in sport assess their critical praxes toward challenging social issues in sport and acting in ways that support advocacy and empowerment.

This paper proposes that the nature of stories and the art of storytelling can inspire the innovation of news forms.However,journalistic actors must also clarify the boundaries between journalism and storytelling and be cautious of the potential negative effects of excessive "storytelling" in journalism. Using the perspective of form theory,this paper presents four propositions that illustrate the relationship between news and stories. It also explores the possibilities of limited innovation in journalism by examining five storytelling elements of "structure," "interpretation," "immersion," "emotion," and "art and creativity."

In this article, he offers a method for effectively exercising that power. For a story to enrapture its listeners, says Guber, it must be true to the teller, embodying his or her deepest values and conveying them with candor; true to the audience, delivering on the promise that it will be worth people's time by acknowledging listeners' needs and involving them in the narrative; true to the moment, appropriately matching the context--whether it's an address to 2,000 customers or a chat with a colleague over drinks--yet flexible enough to allow for improvisation; and true to the mission, conveying the teller's passion for the worthy endeavor that the story illustrates and enlisting support for it. In this article, Guber's advice--distilled not only from his years in the entertainment industry but also from an intense discussion over dinner one evening with storytelling experts from various walks of life--is illustrated with numerous examples of effective storytelling from business and elsewhere. Abstract:Storytelling techniques serve as dynamic tools for enhancing language skills, encompassing both receptive (listening, reading) and productive (speaking, writing) proficiencies. In contrast to their non-narrative counterparts, these techniques offer a more potent array of teaching methodologies. This study aims to elucidate the current landscape of research concerning the efficacy of storytelling techniques. Initially, the investigation delves into the cognitive processing of narratives. Stories engage language processing centers, invigorate the visual cortex, evoke emotive responses, and facilitate comprehension of intricate information. Subsequently, the study explores linguistic processing theory and embodied cognition theory. Through an exhaustive literature review, this research applies a rigorous evidence synthesis method to assess selected studies, culminating in the amalgamation of findings when comparability permits. The study unveils that storytelling techniques foster reading and listening comprehension, bolster speaking and writing skills, and kindle creativity and imagination. Moreover, enhancements span vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Nonetheless, while generally efficacious, the uniformity of effectiveness across diverse learners remains a nuanced aspect.

Abstract:Storytelling is a focal part of any critical work. This article maps what kinds of narratives have been included in the often heated discussions about intersectionality during the past ten years. Scholarly discussions, including intersectionality, also create their own plot patterns, which then regulate what can be argued or should not be argued, what blind spots need to be illuminated, or which weaknesses must be revised. What can we know about intersectionality in the light of scholarly storytelling? How have narrative habits of feminist storytelling affected the development of intersectionality? As a fast-traveling theory, intersectionality has been examined and defined closely in academic discussions, rendering it a target of heated debates. Here, I would like to concentrate on enthusiasm about intersectionality and ask: do we risk losing ethical enthusiasm and compassion in suspicious, fault-finding feminist storytelling? I will first consider feminist storytelling along the lines provided by Rita Felski in The Limits of Critique, Robyn Wiegman in Object Lessons, and Clare Hemmings in Why Stories Matter. After that, I will analyze some recurrent story lines that emerge in debates about intersectionality, story lines concerning genealogy and originalism, intersectionality's relation to black feminism, narratives of revision and correction, and numerous others. In conclusion, I offer an alliance with Felski's postcritical reading to develop new enthusiasm about, and engagement with, intersectionality.

Abstract:Narratives play a very significant role in human social life. An ethnographic study within and ‘around’ a contemporary ‘real-ale’-based pubs organization shows narratives playing a part in the construction of reality at a societal level, in the negotiation of order at an organizational and family level and in the shaping of self identities at the level of the human individual. It is shown that narrative resources at these three levels of social reality come together in particular individual and social circumstances. In the process of doing this an ethnographic narrative about the ‘fall and rise’ of ‘real beer’ and ‘real pubs’ is produced. This offers significant anthropological insights into a culturally interesting aspect of recent and contemporary British life. In addition, insights are offered about processes of ethnographic enquiry and the potential for an ‘everyday ethnography’ style of research that ‘grounds’ theoretical work, without resorting to a notion of ‘grounded theory’.

Abstract:This essay lays out some of the many resources that a background in literary studies has to offer bioethics. After identifying four useful characteristics of stories, it briefly discusses some kinds of moral work that stories can be put to, including countering ethically undesirable stories and modeling ethically troubling situations. Stories can be invoked in our moral reasoning, compared and parsed, and used to teach moral lessons. They can help us discern which moral concepts are operative in a specific instance. Our personal identities consist of stories, which help us understand who we and other people are. Stories can also be parodied, for political or other effect. Stories can perform these moral functions only to the extent that the persons telling or invoking or parodying them are themselves morally competent. But given that competence, a scholarly grasp of literature and narrative can greatly enhance bioethical reflection.

Abstract:In this article, a model of transformation-through-writing will be introduced that helps to explain how a transformative and dialogical-learning process occurs when narratives or poetry are used for healing. We focus in particular on how a “boundary experience” is processed—or how a painful “first story” can be rewritten to become a more life-giving “second story.” We propose that this occurs stepwise in four cognitive stages: sensing; sifting; focusing; and understanding. These stages are explained and underpinned by research on neurobiology, neuropsychology, and on identity learning. The case study used to illustrate this process, focuses on expressive and reflective writing in emotional recovery from domestic violence. To be effective, therapeutic writing requires a safe and enriching learning environment; we discuss how such an environment supports the dialogical self and what considerations a facilitator might take into account when working with a student or client.
