Abstract:Photocatalysis is one of the most important chemical methods to mitigate the energy and environmental crisis via converting inexhaustible solar energy into clean chemical potential. The general history of the development of photocatalysis based on porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is simply divided into three branches with a focus placed on the distinct structural role of the photocatalytic center: the inorganic cluster nodes, the organic linkers, and the guests in the pores of MOFs. In each branch, these photocatalytic centers are considered to be monodispersed within the crystal lattices with the other two structure roles regularly distributed to isolate the active centers and sometimes to provide more functions other than photoactivity. This distinctive nature has rendered MOFs as promising candidates for photocatalysis not only because they combine the benefits of heterogeneous catalysis and homogeneous catalysis but also because they facilitate the possibility of merging multifunctional catalytic sites for concerted or cascade photocatalysis. The design strategy and improvement approaches for MOF-based photocatalysts are also introduced with an emphasis on structure. Our intention is for this comprehensive view of MOFs-involved photocatalysts to inspire new ideas for designing heterogeneous photocatalysts toward the better utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an emerging class of platforms to assemble single site photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis. In this work, we report a new CO2 reduction photocatalyst (UiO-68-Fe-bpy) based on a robust Zr(iv)-MOF platform with incorporated Fe(bpy)Cl3 (bpy refers to the 4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridine] moiety) via amine-aldehyde condensation. We show that this hybrid catalyst can reduce CO2 to form CO under visible light illumination with excellent selectivity and enhanced activity with respect to its parent MOF and corresponding homogeneous counterpart. Using steady state and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, we show that the enhanced photocatalytic activity of UiO-68-Fe-bpy is attributed to the elongated excited state lifetime of Fe(bpy)Cl3 after being incorporated to the UiO-68-NH2 platform. This work demonstrates the great potential of MOFs as a next generation platform for solar fuel conversion.

Abstract:The design and construction of high-performance photocatalysts with both strong visible light harvesting and effective electron transfer are highly desired in the photocatalysis field. Herein, a multi-ligand strategy based on the MOF materials is proposed. A three-ligand Ti-MOF EY/NH2/H-MIL-125 (ENHM) was prepared via a facile hydrothermal method, in which 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-H2BDC), terephthalic acid (H2BDC) and Eosin Y (EY) were employed as three ligands. The push–pull effect induced by different substituent groups (–NH2 and –H) on the skeleton of NH2-H2BDC and H2BDC promotes the efficient transfer of photogenerated electrons from organic ligands to metal nodes; while the third ligand EY increases the number of photoexcited electrons by enhancing the visible light absorption ability. Among the three-ligand MOF photocatalytic materials, ENHM-2 performs the optimal H2 production activity of 2.15 mmol g−1 h−1, much higher than dual-ligand NH2/H-MIL-125 and EY/NH2-MIL-125 and single-ligand NH2-MIL-125. A probable mechanism was also proposed for the three-ligand MOFs. This multi-ligand strategy may open up a new direction toward the preparation of MOF-based photocatalytic materials with excellent photocatalytic performances.

Abstract:Heterojunctions combining two photocatalysts of staggered conduction and valence band energy levels can increase the photocatalytic efficiency compared to their individual components. This activity enhancement is due to the minimization of undesirable charge recombination by the occurrence of carrier migration through the heterojunction interface with separated electrons and holes on the reducing and oxidizing junction component, respectively. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently among the most researched photocatalysts due to their tunable light absorption, facile charge separation, large surface area and porosity. The present review summarizes the current state-of-the-art in MOF-based heterojunctions, providing critical comments on the construction of these heterostructures. Besides including examples showing the better performance of MOF heterojunctions for three important photocatalytic processes, such as hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 photoreduction and dye decolorization, the focus of this review is on describing synthetic procedures to form heterojunctions with MOFs and on discussing the experimental techniques that provide evidence for the operation of charge migration between the MOF and the other component. Special attention has been paid to the design of rational MOF heterojunctions with small particle size and controlled morphology for an appropriate interfacial contact. The final section summarizes the achievements of the field and provides our views on future developments.
Boosting Nitrogen Activation via Bimetallic Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis

Abstract:Photocatalytic ammonia synthesis from N2 is a carbon-neutral strategy, although its efficiency is impeded by the activation of inert N≡N triple bonds. In N2 activation, the electron acceptance process is often strongly coupled with the electron donation process, leading to a high potential activation energy barrier and low photocatalytic activity. Herein, we proposed a strategy to decouple these two processes by bimetallic organic frameworks (BMOFs) for boosting N2 activation. The rationally designed BMOFs are composed of two functional metal nodes, in which the hard acid metal node with a high ionization potential (In) accepts the electron from N2 and the soft acid metal node with a low In donates the electron to N2. Owing to the bimetal synergistic effect, the potential activation energy barrier of N2 is reduced, as confirmed by the in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Via testing six kinds of bimetal combinations, it is found that, as the ionization potential difference (ΔIn) between the two metals is ≥6 eV and the proportion of high In metal reaches ∼20%, the bimetal synergistic effect becomes dominant. In all the as-prepared BMOFs, the optimal BMOF(Sr)–0.2Fe photocatalyst exhibits an NH3 evolution rate up to 780 μmol g–1 h–1. Abstract:Metal sites play an essential role in both electrocatalytic and photocatalytic energy conversion. The highly ordered arrangements of the organic linkers and metal nodes as well as the well-defined pore structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) make them ideal substrates to support atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs) located in their metal nodes, linkers, and pores. Porous carbon materials doped with ADMSs can be derived from these ADMS-incorporating MOF precursors through controlled treatments. These ADMSs incorporated in pristine MOFs and MOF-derived carbon materials possess unique advantages over molecular or bulk metal-based catalysts and bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for energy-conversion applications. This Review presents recent progress in the design and incorporation of ADMSs in MOFs and MOF-derived materials for energy-conversion applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received extensive attention, relying on the characteristic of porosity, high specific surface area and modifiability. Its semiconductor characteristics make it focus in the field of photocatalysis. Based on the classification of modification methods, this article summarized the recent researches on MOFs in the field of photocatalysis, including inner confinement metal nanoparticles, semiconductor composites and MOFs derivatives. The first two modifications aim to reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes by transferring them. The latter removes the partial ligand by calcination and retain the porous structure framework of MOFs, which improve the chemical stability of MOFs. Such MOF-based photocatalysts have been used in the fields of environmental pollution control and energy sustainable development.

Design and Syntheses of MOF/COF Hybrid Materials Via Postsynthetic Covalent Modification: an Efficient Strategy to Boost the Visible-Light-driven Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:The search of novel visible-light-responsive porous materials is important because they hold great promise for applications in various fields. Herein, we report a novel strategy based on postsynthetic covalent modification for fabrication of hierarchical porous metal-organic frameworks/covalent organic frameworks (MOF/COF) hybrid materials. For the first time, benzoic acid-modified covalent triazine-based frameworks (B-CTF-1) are covalently bonded with MOFs (NH2-MIL-125(Ti) or NH2-UiO-66(Zr)) by using this strategy. Photocatalytic results show that the hydrogen production rate over 15 wt% NH2-MIL-125(Ti)/B-CTF-1 (15TBC) is 360 mu mol.h(-1).g(-1) under visible light irradiation, which is more than twice as much as that of the B-CTF-1. Meanwhile, the hybrid materials show higher stability as compared to the simple heterostructures of MOFs and COFs connected via Van der Waals force. Photoelectrochemical analyses and controlled experiments indicate that the superior photocatalytic performance of the MOF/COF hybrids can be attributed to the formation of amide bonds between B-CTF-1 and MOFs, which facilitate the charge separation efficiency and improve the stability of the photocatalyst. Finally, a possible mechanism to well explain the improved photocatalytic performance of the photocatalytic system was proposed. The present work provides a new idea to construct highly efficient and stable MOF/COF hybrid systems and broaden the applications of COF-based materials.

Abstract:Donor-acceptor metal-organic frameworks (D-A MOFs) are promising platforms for photocatalytic organic transformation and energy conversion due to their controllable chemical structures and tunable energy band gaps. Herein, we report two imine-linked D-A MOFs, namely JNM-18 and JNM-19, containing both Cu(I) cyclic trinuclear units (CTUs) as electron acceptor (A) and triphenylbenzene (TPB) or hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) as electron donor (D) synthesized by Schiff base condensations. With precise spatial distribution of donor and acceptor moieties within the two-dimensional (2D) networks, the obtained D-A MOFs exhibited efficient photocatalytic activity for aerobic oxidation reaction of benzylamines upon irradiation of violet LED. Interestingly, JNM-18 with planar TPB moieties showed better photo-electrochemical properties, and thus better photocatalytic performance than JNM-19 containing nonplanar HPB units with propeller arrangement which was possibly reasoned by the stronger electron-donating abilities of the associated building units. This work illustrates a convenient approach to reticularly prepare D-A MOFs as photocatalysts by linkage of dynamic covalent chemistry.

Modulating Coordination Environment of Single-Atom Catalysts and Their Proximity to Photosensitive Units for Boosting MOF Photocatalysis

Abstract:Well-organized photosensitive units and catalytic sites in proximity are crucial for improving charge separation efficiency and boosting photocatalysis. Herein, a general and facile strategy for the construction of high-loading (>4 wt %) single-atom catalysts (SACs) with a tunable coordination microenvironment has been developed on the basis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The neighboring -O/OHx groups from a Zr-6-oxo cluster in the MOFs provide lone-pair electrons and charge balance to immobilize the extraneous single metal atoms. The well-accessible and atomically dispersed metal sites possess close proximity to the photosensitive units (i.e., linkers), which greatly accelerates charge transfer and thereby promotes the redox reaction. The coordination environment of the representative single-atom Ni sites significantly modulates the electronic state and the proton activation barrier toward hydrogen production. As a result, the optimized Ni-1-S/MOF with a unique Ni(I) microenvironment presents excellent photocatalytic H-2 production activity, up to 270 fold of the pristine MOF and far surpassing the other Ni-1-X/MOF counterparts. This work unambiguously demonstrates the great advantage of MOFs in the fabrication of high-content SACs with variable microenvironments that are in close proximity to photosensitive linkers, thereby facilitating the electron transfer and promoting photocatalysis.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a promising technology to resolve energy and environmental issues, where the design of high-efficiency photocatalysts is the central task. As an emerging family of photocatalysts, semiconducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with remarkable features have demonstrated great potential in various photocatalytic fields. Compared to MOF-based photocatalysts with a single component, construction of S-scheme heterojunctions can render MOFs with enhanced charge separation, redox capacity and solar energy utilization, and thus improved photocatalytic performance. Herein, an overview of the recent advances in the design of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications is provided. The basic principle of S-scheme heterojunctions is introduced. Then, three types of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions with different compositions are systematically summarized including MOF/non-MOF, MOF-on-MOF and MOF-derived heterojunctions. Afterwards, the enhanced performances of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions in hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, C-H functionalization, H2O2 production and wastewater treatment are highlighted. Lastly, the current challenges and future prospects regarding the design and applications of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions are discussed to inspire the further development of this emerging field.

Abstract:As an effective method to modulate the physicochemical properties of materials, crystal phase engineering, especially hetero-phase, plays an important role in developing high-performance photocatalysts. However, it is still a huge challenge but significant to construct porous hetero-phase nanostructures with adjustable band structures. As a kind of unique porous crystalline materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) might be the appropriate candidate, but the MOF-based hetero-phase is rarely reported. Herein, we developed a secondary building unit (SBU) regulating strategy to prepare two crystal phases of Ti-MOFs constructed by titanium and 1,4-dicarboxybenzene, i.e., COK and MIL-125. Besides, COK/MIL-125 hetero-phase was further constructed. In the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, COK/MIL-125 possessed the highest H2 yield compared to COK and MIL-125, ascribing to the Z-scheme homojunction at hetero-phase interface. Furthermore, by decorating with amino groups (i.e., NH2-COK/NH2-MIL-125), the light absorbing capacity was broadened to visible-light region, and the visible-light-driven H2 yield was greatly improved. Briefly, the MOF-based hetero-phase possesses periodic channel structures and molecularly adjustable band structures, which is scarce in traditional organic or inorganic materials. As a proof of concept, our work not only highlights the development of MOF-based hetero-phase nanostructures, but also paves a novel avenue for designing high-performance photocatalysts.

Abstract:Harnessing solar energy through photocatalysis has excellent potential for powering sustainable chemical production, supporting the United Nations' environmental goals. Single-atoms (SAs) dispersed on catalyst surfaces are gaining attention for their highly active and durable nature. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can provide enough reactive sites to sustain selectivity and durability over time because of their tunable channels and functional groups. Owing to their organized structures, MOFs are ideal platforms for securing individual atoms and promoting solar-driven reactions. Few reviews have, however, reflected the possibility of combining MOFs and SAs to produce potent photocatalysts that may produce clean fuels and valuable chemicals. This review provides a general overview of methods for combining MOFs and SAs to generate photocatalysts. The challenges associated with these MOF-based single-atom systems are also critically examined. Their future development is discussed as continued refinement helps to more fully leverage their advantages for boosting photocatalytic performances - turning sunlight into chemicals in a manner that supports sustainable development. Insights gained here could illuminate pathways toward realizing the profound potential of MOF-based single-atom photocatalysts to empower production driven by renewable solar energy.

Abstract:Highly effective photocatalysts for the hydrogen-evolution reaction were developed by conferring the linkers of NH2 -MIL-125(Ti), a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from TiOx clusters and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (linkers), with active copper centers. This design enables effective transfer of electrons from the linkers to the transient Cu2+ /Cu+ centers, leading to 7000-fold and 27-fold increase of carrier density and lifetime of photogenerated charges, respectively, as well as high-rate production of H2 under visible-light irradiation. This work provides a novel design of a photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution using non-noble Cu2+ /Cu+ as co-catalysts.

Abstract:As inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit the combined advantages of inorganic semiconductor-type photocatalysts and organic/organometallic molecular photocatalysts in the field of solar energy conversion. The excited states, charge separations, and charge mobilities of MOFs remarkably influence the results of MOF-based photocatalytic systems, which reflect varying degrees of characteristics of inorganic semiconductors and organic/organometallic dyes. In this review, we aim to examine how the aforementioned photoelectronic performances affect each step of the photocatalytic processes based on the recent advances of energy catalysis and organic transformations by using MOFs, and attempt to find new clues for modulating the photoelectronic properties of MOF-based catalytic systems to achieve premium photocatalytic efficiencies and selectivities.

Unravelling the Multiple Synergies in MOF/CMP Supramolecular Heterojunction for Enhanced Artificial Photosynthesis

Abstract:MOF/CMP composite benefits from the high CO2 adsorption capacity of MOF and high visible light response of CMP. The covalent bonding forms a type II heterojunction that facilitates electron transfer from CMP to MOF, leading to improved catalytic activity in the electron rich MOF and enhanced CO2 adsorption in the electron depleted CMP; and hence, markedly improved CO2 photoreduction rate. Metal–organic framework (MOF) and conjugated microporous polymers (CMP) are two groups of supramolecular structures with potential applications for artificial photosynthesis though their catalytic activities are yet to be improved. A MOF/CMP hybrid photocatalyst NU@FNBZ with markedly higher catalytic activity for CO2 reduction to CO is hereby reported. The hybrid catalyst benefits from the high CO2 adsorption capacity of NU and the high visible light response of FNBZ. Moreover, the covalent bonding facilitates the formation of type II heterojunction that allows electron transfer from FNBZ to NU, leading to improved catalytic activity in the electron rich NU and enhanced CO2 adsorption in the electron depleted FNBZ. This work manifests that multiple synergy effects can be achieved by rational design of hybrid supramolecular photocatalysts.
