Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.

Abstract:Boesch’s theorem says that “Suppose that a connected graph G has two non-adjacent 2-degree vertices u1 and u2. Then t(G)≤t(G/{u1,u2}), where t(G) is the number of spanning trees of G.” In this paper, we generalize this theorem as follows: “Suppose that G is a connected graph of order at least 3, and that u1 and u2 are two vertices of degree m and n, respectively, in G. Then t(G)≤mn−m02m+n−2m0t(G/{u1,u2}), where m0(≥0) is the number of multiple edges between u1 and u2.”
A Proof of the Tree Packing Conjecture

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Gyárfás (1976), which asserts that any family of trees $T_1, \dots, T_{n}$ where each $T_k$ has $k$ vertices packs into $K_n$. We do so by translating the decomposition problem into a labeling problem, namely complete labeling. Our proof employs the polynomial method using a functional reformulation of the conjecture.

Abstract:We present a very simple bijective proof of Cayley's formula due to Foata and Fuchs (1970). This bijection turns out to be very useful when seen through a probabilistic lens; we explain some of the ways in which it can be used to derive probabilistic identities, bounds, and growth procedures for random trees with given degrees, including random d-ary trees. We also introduce a partial order on the degree sequences of rooted trees, and conjecture that it induces a stochastic partial order on heights of random rooted trees with given degrees.

Abstract:A proper vertex of a rooted tree with totally ordered vertices is a vertex that is less than all its proper descendants. We count several kinds of labeled rooted trees and forests by the number of proper vertices. Our results are all expressed in terms of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c)= c(a+(n-1)b+c)(2a+(n-2)b+c)...((n-1)a+b+c) which reduce to (n+1)^{n-1} for a=b=c=1. Our study of proper vertices was motivated by A. Postnikov's hook length formula for binary trees (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.CO/0507163" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.CO/0507163">arXiv:math.CO/0507163</a>), which was also proved by W. Y. C. Chen and L. L. M. Yang (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.CO/0507163" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.CO/0507163">arXiv:math.CO/0507163</a>) and generalized by R. R. X. Du and F. Liu (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.CO/0501147" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.CO/0501147">arXiv:math.CO/0501147</a>). Our approach gives a new proof of Du and Liu's results and gives new hook length formulas. We also find an interpretation of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c) in terms of parking functions: we count parking functions according to the number of cars that park in their preferred parking spaces.

Abstract:We prove that every tree on $n$ edges decomposes $K_{nx,nx}$ and $K_{2nx + 1}$ for all positive integers $x$. The said decompositions are obtained by proving that every tree admits a $\vec{\beta}$-labeling (oriented beta-labeling). Our proof employs the polynomial method by identifying trees as functions in the transformation monoid $\mathbb{Z}_n^{\mathbb{Z}_n}$. A proof of the graceful tree conjecture (1967) follows as an immediate consequence of the current result. Finally, we introduce additional algebraic properties derived from the decomposition results.

Abstract:A cubelike graph is a Cayley graph on the product $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\cdots\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ of the integers modulo $2$ with itself finitely many times. In 1992, Payan proved that no cubelike graph can have chromatic number $3$. The authors of the present paper previously developed a general matrix method for studying chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. In this note, we apply this method of Heuberger matrices to give an alternate proof of Payan's theorem.

Abstract:Thomassen in 1994 published a famous proof of the fact that the choosability of a planar graph is at most 5. Zhu in 2019 generalized this result by showing that the same bound holds for Alon-Tarsi numbers of planar graphs. We present an alternative proof of that fact, derived from the results on decompositions of planar graphs into trees known as Schnyder woods. It turns out that Thomassen’s technique and our proof based on Schnyder woods have a lot in common. We discuss and explain the prominent role that counterclockwise 3-orientations play in proofs based on both these approaches.

On the independence number of sparser random Cayley graphs

Abstract:The Cayley sum graph $\Gamma_A$ of a set $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n$ is defined to have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and an edge between two distinct vertices $x, y \in \mathbb{Z}_n$ if $x + y \in A$. Green and Morris proved that if the set $A$ is a $p$-random subset of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ with $p = 1/2$, then the independence number of $\Gamma_A$ is asymptotically equal to $\alpha(G(n, 1/2))$ with high probability. Our main theorem is the first extension of their result to $p = o(1)$: we show that, with high probability, $$\alpha(\Gamma_A) = (1 + o(1)) \alpha(G(n, p))$$ as long as $p \ge (\log n)^{-1/80}$. One of the tools in our proof is a geometric-flavoured theorem that generalises Freĭman's lemma, the classical lower bound on the size of high dimensional sumsets. We also give a short proof of this result up to a constant factor; this version yields a much simpler proof of our main theorem at the expense of a worse constant.

Abstract:Cayley's formula states that there are $n^{n-2}$ spanning trees in the complete graph on $n$ vertices; it has been proved in more than a dozen different ways over its 150 year history. The complete graphs are a special case of threshold graphs, and using Merris' Theorem and the Matrix Tree Theorem, there is a strikingly simple formula for counting the number of spanning trees in a threshold graph on $n$ vertices; it is simply the product, over $i=2,3, ...,n-1$, of the number of vertices of degree at least $i$. In this manuscript, we provide a direct combinatorial proof for this formula which does not use the Matrix Tree Theorem; the proof is an extension of Joyal's proof for Cayley's formula. Then we apply this methodology to give a formula for the number of spanning trees in any difference graph.
