Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery
Abstract:The development of the agricultural sector in Brunei contributes to an increasing quantity of solid biomass residues from agricultural products such as the husks from winnowing the harvested rice from the paddy plantations. The main products obtained from biomass's thermochemical and biochemical conversion are biochar, bio-oil, and non-condensable gases. By comparison, bio-oil is primarily used for heating, power generation, and transportation fuels, and as a base material for phenols and acetic acid in the pharmaceutical industry. Brunei's Vision 2035 main goal is to obtain 10% of energy from renewables, reducing dependency on fossil fuels. Currently, 0.05% of energy is from renewable sources; hence, the agricultural sector's bio-oil from rice husk waste is a suitable renewable substitute for fossil fuels. In this study, the rice husk fast pyrolysis plant has a bio-oil production capacity of 300,000 tons/year. The mass and energy balances were carried out using manual calculations and Aspen HYSYS software, which resulted in a bio-oil yield of 52% and 659,720 tons/year of required rice husk feed to achieve the targeted bio-oil production. In addition, the economic study shows that the plant's total investment cost is BND 19,291,711.40 with a payback period of 6.1 years and a return on investment (ROI) of 17% after 20 years for a normal case scenario. A best-case scenario results in a payback period of 1 year with an ROI of 36%, and a worst-case scenario results in a payback period of 16 years with an ROI of 1%. Hence, rice husk is a renewable energy for bio-oil production that is expected to create a breakthrough in Brunei Darussalam.
