Abstract:Bird migration is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles, producing massive global changes in the distributions of birds twice each year. To understand the evolution of this phenomenon, it is important to know the costs of these journeys in terms of the mortality they impose. The use of mark/re‐sighting and tracking studies has now made it possible, for some bird species, to separate mortality during migration from mortality during stationary periods. This paper aims to assess this information, based mainly on 31 published studies, most of which concern long‐distance migrations of passerines, large waterfowl and raptors. Most of these studies revealed that mortality rates were greater during migration than at other times – in some species more than 20 times greater. Overall, on the basis of median values, mortality per unit time during autumn journeys was about 3.0 times greater than mortality during stationary periods, during spring journeys about 6.3 times greater, and during autumn and spring journeys combined 4.4 times greater. The greater overall mortality on spring journeys was largely associated with more adverse wind conditions in spring than in autumn. High mortality rates were especially evident in birds crossing large ecological barriers, such as the Sahara Desert or the Gulf of Mexico, and were higher in that part of their journey than when crossing more benign terrain. There was no increase in mortality during migration in the adults of some long‐lived species with high annual survival and predominantly overland journeys; for these birds, much larger samples of year‐round tracked individuals will be needed to reveal any seasonal variations in mortality. Within certain species, birds that travelled long distances experienced greater mortality over the journey than those that travelled short distances, but in other species no such relationship was found. In species in which adults and juveniles were followed over the same journey, juveniles showed greater mortality. To judge from other studies, this difference could be attributed to the inexperience of juveniles, their lower feeding rates and flight efficiency, greater vulnerability to hazards such as weather and predation, or more frequent navigational errors. Broadly speaking, the risks of migration vary with features of the birds themselves, with the terrain to be crossed and with weather at the time. It may be assumed that migration persists in the long term because the costs (in terms of associated mortality) are more than offset by the benefits of breeding and wintering in different areas (in terms of improved overall survival and breeding success). To provide further understanding of migration mortality, suggestions are made on the types of studies required and on how they could best be conducted.

Liver and Let Die? A Retrospective Analysis of Secretarybird Mortality in European Zoos

Abstract:A secretarybird and a life table for the ESB secretarybird population. The secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a threatened African raptor species, and as such requires conservation attention. While the species is managed under a European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) Ex‐situ Programme (EEP), no studies of mortality are currently available. A retrospective mortality project was therefore conducted to identify the most common causes of death in captive secretarybirds, with a view to informing management decisions. Data were collected by requesting the postmortem reports from zoos where secretarybirds had died and combining this with the existing data recorded in the Zoological Information Management System. Overall, 167 birds were recorded as having died within the EEP population, of which post‐mortem information was available for 51 (30.54%) individuals. Trauma was the most common cause of death identified (22 birds, 13.17%), with infection appearing as the second most prevalent cause (15 birds, 8.98%). One incidental finding at postmortem was that many (9) birds showed evidence of liver damage, with reports of bacterial hepatitis, staphylococcal infection, lesions, and dark coloration. Further research into liver complications and diet composition for secretarybirds may therefore have value in reducing mortality. Similarly, investigating strategies to reduce trauma caused by other enclosure occupants or conspecifics may have value in lengthening lifespans for this endangered species.

Abstract:A mortality event at the Christiansø colony in the Baltic proper killed 115 common eiders (Somateria mollissima) in mid-May 2016. To complement previous studies of incubating females, 39 males were necropsied and from a subsample of these a biochemical and haematological profile was obtained. The birds were emaciated and cachexic having a 50% reduction in body mass. Twenty-nine eiders were diagnosed with hydropericardium, 15 had hunger edema, three birds had enteritis and a single air sac infection. All birds were infested with intestinal Polymorphus minutus and 32 of these with the intestinal Trematoda spp. Microscopic parasitic investigations identified endoparasitic trematodes of the families Bucephhalidae, Echinostomidae, Notocotyluridae and Levinsiniella. White blood cell count showed slight heterophilia and lymphopenia while the albumin:globulin ratio (0.28) indicated stress, immune supression and inflammatory reactions supported by a high heterophil:lymphocyte index (13). Declined plasma concentration of glucose, fructosamine, amylase, albumin and protein likewise indicated long-term starvation prior to mortality indicating phase III starvation (catabolism of protein). The dramatic increase in aspartate transaminase, glutamate-dehydrogenase, lactate-dehydrogenase and bile acids indicate liver disorders while dehydration, renal, heart and bone disorders was reflected in the increased uric acid, urea, phosphor and potassium values. These findings show that male eiders undergo long-term starvation and multi organ failure similar to that of incubating females previously reported from the same colony. It increases our knowledge of the physiology of starving eiders and add to our understanding of the recurrent mortality events in the colony that seems to be linked to changes in food availability being an important factor together with a warmer climate in a declining Baltic eider population. We recommend future studies to focus on food composition, migration patterns and environmental changes including parasitic infections and global warming.
Survival rates and causes of death in Tengmalm's owl offspring during the post-fledging dependence period in Central and North Europe

Abstract:Offspring survival rates in altricial birds during the post-fledging period are an essential factor in determining the fitness of parents and have a significant impact on general population dynamics. However, our current knowledge of post-fledging mortality and its causes remains fragmentary in most bird species, and even less information is available on the mortality of individuals of the same species in different environments. In order to address this gap in our knowledge, we studied fledgling mortality and its causes in Tengmalm's owls ( Aegolius funereus ) during six breeding seasons in Central and North Europe using radio-telemetry. A total of 80 nestlings from 18 nests in Czechia (2010–2012, 2015) and 60 nestlings from 24 nests in Finland (2019, 2021) were radio-tracked during the post-fledging dependence period. The overall survival rate was much higher in Czechia (83%) than in Finland (53%), with predation identified as the primary cause of mortality in both areas. Avian predation was far higher in Finland, but mammalian predation was equivalent at both study sites. Pine martens ( Martes martes ) and goshawks ( Accipiter gentilis ) were the most common predators in Czechia and Finland, respectively. Starvation and disease, or mostly a combination of both, formed the second most common cause of death in both areas but were much more frequent in Finland than in Czechia. Offspring survival in both study sites was considerably higher in years of food abundance than in those of food scarcity. We suggest that the interactive effects of infections and poor body condition due to scarcity of main prey species induced higher mortality rates in offspring, particularly in the more challenging environment of North Europe. In contrast, fledgling owls were found to be able to fight off infections more successfully during rich food seasons. Finally, we encourage researchers to pay greater attention to the mutual influences of parasites and their definitive hosts and stress the importance of using radio or satellite tracking for mortality studies to identify causes of death more accurately.

Abstract:Sex-biased mortality can occur in birds during development, for example due to sexual differences in energy requirement and/or environmental sensitivity, or the effects of sex hormones or sex differences in the expression of mutations linked to sex chromosomes. The extent of sex-bias in mortality may also be related to environmental conditions that influence offspring development and survival. Urban areas often provide poorer conditions for nestling development resulting in higher offspring mortality compared to natural areas, which may accelerate sex differences in offspring mortality in cities. To test this hypothesis, we examined the sex ratio of dead offspring in Great Tits ( Parus major ), using 427 samples of unhatched eggs and dead nestlings collected in two urban and two forest sites between 2013 and 2019. The ratio of males in the whole sample of dead offspring (56.9%) was significantly higher than expected by an 1:1 ratio, and the strongest sex biases were detected in urban areas (57.6% males) and in young nestlings (<14 days old, 59.0% males). However, the sex ratios of dead offspring did not differ significantly among study sites and between offspring developmental stages. 29.3% of unhatched eggs contained a visible embryo, and the proportion of embryo-containing unhatched eggs did not differ significantly between urban and forest study sites. These results suggest male-biased offspring mortality in Great Tits, and highlight the need of large datasets to detect subtle differences between habitats and developmental stages.

Abstract:For long‐lived species, adult survival is the parameter that theoretically has the strongest impact on population dynamics; this makes its estimate crucial for conservation management. The use of non‐invasive genetic approaches coupled with capture–recapture methods is being used increasingly to estimate adult survival. Despite being regularly employed in mammals, it has been little‐used in birds and notably in long‐lived territorial species. This study aimed to determine if feathers obtained from eagle nests could be used to estimate the adult apparent survival rate and the costs associated with such an approach. Feather samples (n = 180) were collected in nests (n = 78) and directly from individual Golden Eagles (n = 36) Aquila chrysaetos in France and were genotyped using 17 microsatellite markers. The genotyping error rates obtained were low, with 3% amplification failures, 3.1% dropouts and 1.7% false alleles. The genetic variability of the markers was high, with a probability of identity between siblings of 6.8 × 10−6, allowing reliable individual identification. Of the feathers collected in nests, 90% were from breeding females; this allowed apparent survival to be estimated for adult females at a reasonable cost. The genotyping of three feathers collected from a nest ensured individual identification of the breeding female with near certainty. Our simulations showed that monitoring of at least 20 pairs over 5 years, or 10 pairs over 10 years is necessary to detect a 10% absolute decrease in adult apparent survival. Estimating the adult survival rate of long‐lived birds using feathers collected in nests is possible. A substantial budget, albeit one that is likely to be lower than that for a common capture–recapture survey, would be needed to obtain precise survival estimates.

Natural Regulation of the Baltic Population of the Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis: The Interplay between Winter Severity and Density Dependence

Abstract:After a period of continuous increase and range expansion, the Baltic Great Cormorant population has stabilised in large parts of its range in recent years. Ringing recoveries reveal that considerable proportions of the population winter in areas that can be affected by prolonged frost periods. There is evidence that winter severity is an important density-dependent regulation factor: if the population is large, ice cover of coastal and inland water surfaces during harsh winters affects the population by reducing the availability of food resources. As long as the population remained small, however, it was not affected even by very cold winters, since the remaining accessible food resources were presumably still sufficient. The analysis presented here uses the average winter temperature in Germany as a proxy for winter severity in the frost-affected parts of the wintering areas of Baltic Cormorants. The Baltic Cormorant population in 19802016 is estimated from annual counts in Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Estonia, Finland and Gotland, which account for about 50% of the total population. The interplay between winter severity and density dependence is analysed using a linear and a non-linear regression model approach. The non-linear model gives a better description of the relationship between the size of the Baltic breeding population during the year (n), the winter temperature Tn, and the population size during the previous year (n1). According to the model, a population of less than 41,400 breeding pairs would not suffer declines during even the coldest winters recorded since 1882. In 1989, the Baltic Cormorant population exceeded for the first time the threshold value for density-dependent regulation caused by severe winters. The winter 1995/96 was then the first one cold enough to cause a population decline. According to the model, during the years 2002/2003, 2005/06, 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11 the winters have been cold enough to reduce population numbers. Furthermore, the model shows that the regulative winter effect is restricted to the low temperature range.

Abstract:Survival data on Asian and other tropical landbirds is scant and most often derived from studies of birds in forest habitats. Open-country and human-modified habitats are less well studied, even though they may support bird species of conservation concern. We estimated apparent survival probability using open population capturerecapture (Cormack-Jolly-Seber) models for 9 relatively common species of birds over a 20 year period in a managed wetland at His Majesty the King's Royally Initiated Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project, Phetchaburi, Thailand. These included 1 kingfisher and 8 passeriforms, 3 of which are long-distance migrants. Recapture probabilities for the studied species were low (0.030.20) and mean annual survival probabilities for all lay within the range 0.300.73. The longest recorded interval between initial capture and recapture was 11 years for 2 resident species, Malaysian Pied Fantail (Rhipidura javanica) and Common Tailorbird (Orthotomus sutorius). Banding data should be used more widely to study the life-history and population parameters of a wider range of species, particularly those for which human-modified landscapes constitute a major proportion of their available habitat, and which may suffer stress from intensification of land use. Abstract:Adult mortality can be a major driver of population decline in species whose productivity is relatively low. Yet, little is known about the factors influencing adult survival rates in migratory bird species, nor do we know much about the longer-term effects of habitat disturbance on the fitness of individuals. The Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) is one of the vertebrate species most sensitive to forest management, yet it is still common and widespread. We monitored the fate of 330 colour-banded Ovenbird males in four pairs of 25-ha plots during 9 successive breeding seasons. One plot of each pair was treated through selection harvesting (30-40% basal area removed) during the first winter. We tested the following hypotheses: (1) higher physiological costs in harvested plots as a result of lower food abundance will reduce apparent survival rate (ASR) relative to controls; (2) lower ASR following years with low nest survival and higher probability of renesting; (3) fluctuations in ASR reflecting El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO); and (4) higher ASR in returning males than in recruits (unbanded immigrants) owing to greater site familiarity in the former. We tested the relative importance of these hypotheses, or combinations thereof, by generating 23 models explaining variation in ASR. The year-dependent model received the most support, showing a 41% decrease in ASR from 2007 to 2014. The important year-to-year variation we observed in ASR (Σw(i) = 0.99) was not explained by variation in nest predation risk nor by ENSO. There was also little evidence for an effect of selection harvesting on ASR of Ovenbird males, despite a slight reduction in lifespan relative to males from control plots (2.7 vs 2.9 years). An avenue worth exploring to explain this intriguing pattern would be to determine whether conditions at migratory stopover sites or in the wintering area of our focal population have gradually worsened over the past decade.

Danish hunting in the light of unique citizen science bag statistics spanning 80 years

Abstract:Hunting occupies a strong position in Denmark, and Danish hunters have delivered high quality data on their individual tally of bagged birds and mammals ever since it became mandatory to do so in 1941. The annual data on hunting yields of most species for more than 80 years serves to qualify the advice given by Danish wildlife biologists on hunting and wildlife management to the responsible authorities and other stakeholders. Due to overharvest or persecution many wildlife populations were heavily reduced or even driven to extinction during the last part of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Since then, improved legislation and management have resulted in many populations becoming re-established or increasing, and the total take by hunters increased to culminate in almost 4 million bagged mammals and birds per year around 1970. After 1970, the most distinctive pattern has been that total numbers of bagged animals has decreased, while yield in weight of the take has almost doubled over the 80-year span of data. This is because the take of smaller game has decreased due to protective measures, reduced farmland wildlife populations, and declining interest among hunters, while the take of larger species such as deer and geese has increased considerably following increasing populations resulting from improved management of hunting together with green fields in winter. The question remains as to what extent hunting and its associated disturbances and heightened shyness of wildlife keep quarry populations below the carrying capacity of the environment. This issue is particularly problematic in relation to the entire West Palearctic flyway populations of waterbirds, where lack of reliable annual bag statistics from most of the countries along the flyway prevents effective management. This challenge is further discussed in relation to societal changes in attitudes towards hunting and the future of such changes.

Abstract:Researchers conduct post-construction fatality monitoring (PCFM) to determine a wind energy facility's direct impacts on wildlife. Results of PCFM can be used to evaluate compliance with permitted take, potentially triggering adaptive management measures or offsetting mitigation; reducing uncertainty in fatality rates benefits wind companies, wildlife agencies, and other stakeholders. As part of PCFM, investigators conduct carcass persistence trials to account for imperfect detection during carcass surveys. In most PCFM studies, pen-raised game birds and other non-raptor surrogates have been used to estimate persistence of all large birds, including raptors. However, there is a growing body of evidence showing carcass persistence varies by bird type; raptor fatality estimates based on game bird carcass persistence may therefore be biased high. We conducted raptor and game bird carcass persistence field trials for 1 year at 6 wind energy facilities. Raptor carcass persistence varied by habitat and season, whereas the best-supported game bird model only included habitat. Raptor persistence probabilities were higher than corresponding game bird persistence probabilities for 13 of the 16 habitat and season combinations. Analysis of a curated large bird persistence meta-dataset showed that raptor carcass persistence varied by season, habitat, and region. The probability of persisting through a 30-day search interval ranged from 0.44 to 0.99 for raptors and from 0.16 to 0.79 for game birds. Raptor persistence was significantly higher than game bird persistence for 95% of the sampled strata. We used these carcass persistence estimates to develop linear mixed-effects models that predict raptor persistence probabilities based on estimated game bird persistence probabilities. Our scaling model provides an important statistical method to address gaps in raptor persistence data at sites in a broad range of landscape contexts in the continental United States and should be used to inform fatality estimation when site-specific raptor persistence data are limited or absent.

Abstract:Growth and development rates may result from genetic programming of intrinsic processes that yield correlated rates between life stages. These intrinsic rates are thought to affect adult mortality probability and longevity. However, if proximate extrinsic factors (e.g., temperature, food) influence development rates differently between stages and yield low covariance between stages, then development rates may not explain adult mortality probability. We examined these issues based on study of 90 songbird species on four continents to capture the diverse life-history strategies observed across geographic space. The length of the embryonic period explained little variation (ca. 13%) in nestling periods and growth rates among species. This low covariance suggests that the relative importance of intrinsic and extrinsic influences on growth and development rates differs between stages. Consequently, nestling period durations and nestling growth rates were not related to annual adult mortality probability among diverse songbird species within or among sites. The absence of a clear effect of faster growth on adult mortality when examined in an evolutionary framework across species may indicate that species that evolve faster growth also evolve physiological mechanisms for ameliorating costs on adult mortality. Instead, adult mortality rates of species in the wild may be determined more strongly by extrinsic environmental causes.
Temporal and spatial variability in availability bias has consequences for marine bird abundance estimates during the non-breeding season

Abstract:1. To effectively monitor how marine ecosystems are being reshaped by anthropogenic pressures, we require understanding of species abundances and distributions. Due to their socio-economic and ecological value, predatory species are often at the forefront of survey efforts. However, survey data are only valuable if they can reliably be converted into estimates of underlying distributions. 2. We consider at-sea surveys of marine predators that often inform ecological impact assessments of offshore windfarms. These surveys are subject to a form of detection bias called "availability bias" whereby individuals which are submerged below the surface are consequently "unavailable" for detection. Although correction factors are commonly used in these surveys, they are currently based on limited data that may not be species-, time-, or area-specific. Here, we use time-depth-recorder data to investigate variation in marine bird availability bias. 3. We found that the proportion of diving marine birds submerged below the sea surface during daylight hours, and therefore unavailable to be counted during surveys, varied by species, month, and area. For three of our focal species wintering around northwest Europe (Atlantic puffin, common guillemot, razorbill) our results were different to comparable values previously used to correct for the availability bias, whereas no correction factors are regularly used for the fourth species (red-throated diver). We now present availability bias correction factors that are species- and month-specific to the areas the study populations use during their non-breeding seasons: the North Sea, the north and west coasts of the UK, the Baltic Sea, and Icelandic coastal waters. 4. Synthesis and applications: Variation in the proportion of daylight hours that marine birds spent submerged lead to differences in availability bias correction factors, thereby impacting estimations of their abundances. We encourage use of correction factors that use data from the species, marine area, and month during which surveys are conducted to provide more accurate abundance estimates. Using more relevant correction factors will result in increasingly accurate abundance and distribution estimates of diving marine birds, with relevance for a range of applications including planning for offshore windfarm developments, the designation and monitoring of protected areas, and understanding environmental change.

Domestic Cat Predation on Garden Birds: An Analysis from European Ringing Programmes

Abstract:Domestic Cat Felis silvestris catus populations have been increasing since the 1970s in Western Europe. This increase is particularly notable in human habitats, such as gardens and parks, where Cats have locally become the most abundant carnivore. In urban contexts, understanding Cat behaviour could be important for biodiversity management. In this study, we analysed Cat predation on garden birds, using existing data from ringing programmes in France and Belgium. These types of data permit us to (1) investigate the bird species killed by Cats, (2) analyse changes in the proportion of birds killed by Cats over the years 20002015, and (3) compare the causes of bird mortality as reported by observers. The most affected species were passerines, both granivorous and insectivorous (Europian Robin Erithacus rubecula, Dunnock Prunella modularis, Greenfinch Carduelis chloris), who can frequently be found feeding on the ground or visiting feeders in the winter. Perched birds (Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita, Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla) were less represented. Ground-dwelling habits were significantly correlated to predation rates. Between 2000 and 2015, Cat-related mortality in garden birds increased by at least 50%, depending on the ringing programme studied, which coincided with an increase in Cat populations. Cat-related mortality is one of the leading causes of death reported by observers (12.826.3% of total dead birds) and occurs at the same order of magnitude as deaths due to collisions with windows. These results underline the need to consider Cats and their potential impacts on urban biodiversity management at garden and urban levels.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in wild birds on Danish livestock farms

Abstract:Background: Reducing the occurrence of campylobacteriosis is a food safety issue of high priority, as in recent years it has been the most commonly reported zoonosis in the EU. Livestock farms are of particular interest, since cattle, swine and poultry are common reservoirs of Campylobacter spp. The farm environment provides attractive foraging and breeding habitats for some bird species reported to carry thermophilic Campylobacter spp. We investigated the Campylobacter spp. carriage rates in 52 wild bird species present on 12 Danish farms, sampled during a winter and a summer season, in order to study the factors influencing the prevalence in wild birds according to their ecological guild. In total, 1607 individual wild bird cloacal swab samples and 386 livestock manure samples were cultured for Campylobacter spp. according to the Nordic Committee on Food Analysis method NMKL 119. Results: The highest Campylobacter spp. prevalence was seen in 110 out of 178 thrushes (61.8 %), of which the majority were Common Blackbird (Turdus merula), and in 131 out of 616 sparrows (21.3 %), a guild made up of House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) and Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus). In general, birds feeding on a diet of animal or mixed animal and vegetable origin, foraging on the ground and vegetation in close proximity to livestock stables were more likely to carry Campylobacter spp. in both summer (P < 0.001) and winter (P < 0.001) than birds foraging further away from the farm or in the air. Age, fat score, gender, and migration range were not found to be associated with Campylobacter spp. carriage. A correlation was found between the prevalence (%) of C. jejuni in wild birds and the proportions (%) of C. jejuni in both manure on cattle farms (R(2) = 0.92) and poultry farms (R(2) = 0.54), and between the prevalence (%) of C. coli in wild birds and the proportions (%) of C. coli in manure on pig farms (R(2) = 0.62). Conclusions: The ecological guild of wild birds influences the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. through the behavioural patterns of the birds. More specifically, wild birds eating food of animal or mixed animal and vegetable origin and foraging on the ground close to livestock were more likely to carry Campylobacter spp. than those foraging further away or hunting in the air. These findings suggest that wild birds may play a role in sustaining the epidemiology of Campylobacter spp. on farms.

Abstract:One of the most common wildlife crimes involving birds worldwide is malicious poisoning. Post-mortem examination and toxicological analysis are essential for a proper diagnosis of the cause of the poisoning. However, investigators often require an estimate of the time of death, which is best determined by identifying the stage of carcass decomposition. The aim of this article is to propose a scoring method to classify the stages of carcass decomposition and thus provide an estimate of the time of death in small-size raptors. This protocol can be used by practitioners, forensic veterinarians, researchers, authorities and personnel collecting carcasses in order to standardize methods and minimize subjectivity. For this purpose, 12 carcasses of Common kestrel (<i>Falco tinnunculus</i>) were exposed to external weather conditions (in the period 4–19 July 2019) in Murcia, Southeastern Spain. The ambient temperature and relative humidity, body core temperatures and carcass weights were measured at intervals over the study period. Necropsies were performed (2 birds at each interval) at 1–2 h, 24 h, 72 h, 96 h, 7 days and 15 days after death. The necropsy of a previously frozen bird was performed to act as a comparison with non-frozen fresh individuals. Six stages of the post-mortem autolytic process were selected: fresh carcass, moderate decomposition, advanced decomposition, very advanced decomposition, initial skeletal reduction and complete skeletal reduction. To classify the carcasses according to these categories, a scoring method is proposed considering 5 parameters: state of the eyeballs, tongue/oral cavity, pectoral muscle, internal organs and other features. Several parameters affecting the process of the decomposition are discussed.

Cohort-specific differential vulnerability to capture of mallards and wood ducks in baited swim-in traps

Abstract:Abstract Attaching leg bands to birds directly before fall hunting seasons is a primary component of monitoring waterfowl in North America. While capture and recovery data are primarily used for estimating survival and harvest distribution, these data may be used to estimate age ratios and other demographic rates, especially if recapture data are available from subsequent trapping and release events. We estimated recapture rates of mallards Anas platyrhynchos and wood ducks Aix sponsa and used those rates to estimate differential capture vulnerability, which is vital to estimate true age ratios from banding data. Posterior estimates of mallard age and sex cohort and location-specific recapture rates varied among capture locations from a mean of 0.004 (0.002- 0.008 95% credible interval) to 0.547 (0.486-0.609). Ratios of recapture rates among cohorts also varied, meaning no single differential vulnerability estimate would be useable across the study area. Our estimates of differential capture vulnerability for mallards, using the ratio of recapture probabilities, averaged 2.64 for adult female to adult male and 5.42 for juvenile female to adult female, with significant variation. Wood duck cohort-specific recapture rates were similar across locations. Similar wood duck recapture rates resulted in similar estimates of differential vulnerability, 1.24 for the adult female to adult male ratio and 1.30 for juvenile female to adult female. The wide range of recapture rate estimates we found for mallards suggests location- specific characteristics may have a strong effect on capture probability. Differences in recapture rates and apparent survival likely resulting from emigration suggest if recapture data are to be used in population modeling, location-specific information is needed. The ability to monitor multiple demographic parameters using a single scheme improves continued assessment of population status. We recommend increased collection of in-season recapture data by biologists during active banding operations. Banders should be aware of the potential value of live, in- season, encounters in monitoring populations and modeling demographic rates.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Radiation has negative effects on survival of animals including humans, although the generality of this claim is poorly documented under low-dose field conditions. Because females may suffer disproportionately from the effects of radiation on survival due to differences in sex roles during reproduction, radiation-induced mortality may result in male-skewed adult sex ratios.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING: We estimated the effects of low-dose radiation on adult survival rates in birds by determining age ratios of adults captured in mist nets during the breeding season in relation to background radiation levels around Chernobyl and in nearby uncontaminated control areas. Age ratios were skewed towards yearlings, especially in the most contaminated areas, implying that adult survival rates were reduced in contaminated areas, and that populations in such areas could only be maintained through immigration from nearby uncontaminated areas. Differential mortality in females resulted in a strongly male-skewed sex ratio in the most contaminated areas. In addition, males sang disproportionately commonly in the most contaminated areas where the sex ratio was male skewed presumably because males had difficulty finding and acquiring mates when females were rare. The results were not caused by permanent emigration by females from the most contaminated areas because none of the recaptured birds had changed breeding site, and the proportion of individuals with morphological abnormalities did not differ significantly between the sexes for areas with normal and higher levels of contamination.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the adult survival rate of female birds is particularly susceptible to the effects of low-dose radiation, resulting in male skewed sex ratios at high levels of radiation. Such skewed age ratios towards yearlings in contaminated areas are consistent with the hypothesis that an area exceeding 30,000 km(2) in Chernobyl's surroundings constitutes an ecological trap that causes dramatic excess mortality.
