Abstract:Employing molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and solid-state density functional theory (DFT), we carried out thorough studies to understand the interaction-structure-property interrelationship of the co-crystal explosive 1:1 CL-20:TNT. Our results revealed that the co-crystallization of CL-20 and TNT molecules enhances the intermolecular binding forces, where the main driving force for the formation of the co-crystal CL-20/TNT comes from HO and CO interactions, while OO contributes to the co-crystal stabilization. Furthermore, we also used the concept of atoms in molecule (AIM) and the reduced density gradient (RDG) to describe the spatial arrangements and interactions of co-crystal compositions, which showed that although the adjoining TNT molecules possess two symmetry groups and the adjoining CL-20 molecules possess the same symmetry group, their interactions are not identical. These spatial arrangements provide a good reference to the formation of other co-crystals. When the obtained structural and detonation properties of the three crystals were compared, it was observed that the CL-20/TNT co-crystal achieved the desirable properties of explosives, i.e., low-sensitivity and high-energy, possessing the advantages of both CL-20 and TNT explosives.

Abstract:Co-crystal of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20)/2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a low-sensitivity and high-energy explosive obtained recently by combining 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) molecules by the co-crystallization technique. However, the underlying properties and decay mechanism remain unclear. In this work, we performed quantum-based multiscale shock simulation under shock loading by self-consistent charge density-functional tight binding method to study the initial chemical mechanism of CL-20/TNT. The results demonstrate that the temperature and pressure increase with decrease in volume when the shock strength increases constantly. The initial decomposition steps CL-20 and TNT molecules in co-crystal are consistent with the decomposition steps when they are pure crystal, N-NO2 bond cleavage at low velocity is observed while is inhibited at high velocity for CL-20 molecule, H transfer and C-NO2 bond break of TNT molecule are main initial decay step. Meanwhile, CL-20 decomposes faster than TNT and the releasing heat of CL-20 decomposition is transferred to TNT to increase the decomposition rate of TNT during the shock decomposition. Moreover, the evolution of the main stable products strongly depends on the shock strength. NO2 is the dominant primary intermediate resulting from a weak bond barrier, and CO, N-2, NO, among others are the main products determined by the shock strength. This study provides new insights into the initial decomposition mechanism of CL-20/TNT upon shock loading at the atomic level and has important implications for understanding and development of energetic materials.
Anisotropic Responses and Initial Decomposition of Condensed-Phase Β-Hmx under Shock Loadings Via Molecular Dynamics Simulations in Conjunction with Multiscale Shock Technique.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with multiscale shock technique (MSST) are performed to study the initial chemical processes and the anisotropy of shock sensitivity of the condensed-phase HMX under shock loadings applied along the a, b, and c lattice vectors. A self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method was employed. Our results show that there is a difference between lattice vector a (or c) and lattice vector b in the response to a shock wave velocity of 11 km/s, which is investigated through reaction temperature and relative sliding rate between adjacent slipping planes. The response along lattice vectors a and c are similar to each other, whose reaction temperature is up to 7000 K, but quite different along lattice vector b, whose reaction temperature is only up to 4000 K. When compared with shock wave propagation along the lattice vectors a (18 Å/ps) and c (21 Å/ps), the relative sliding rate between adjacent slipping planes along lattice vector b is only 0.2 Å/ps. Thus, the small relative sliding rate between adjacent slipping planes results in the temperature and energy under shock loading increasing at a slower rate, which is the main reason leading to less sensitivity under shock wave compression along lattice vector b. In addition, the C-H bond dissociation is the primary pathway for HMX decomposition in early stages under high shock loading from various directions. Compared with the observation for shock velocities V(imp) = 10 and 11 km/s, the homolytic cleavage of N-NO2 bond was obviously suppressed with increasing pressure.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of void defects on the shock response of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) co-crystals, shock responses of CL-20 co-crystals with energetic materials ligands trinitrotoluene (TNT), 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB), solvents ligands dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) with void were simulated, using molecular dynamics method and reactive force field. It is found that the CL-20 co-crystals with void defects will form hot spots when impacted, significantly affecting the decomposition of molecules around the void. The degree of molecular fragmentation is relatively low under the reflection velocity of 2 km/s, and the main reactions are the formation of dimer and the shedding of nitro groups. The existence of voids reduces the safety of CL-20 co-crystals, which induced the sensitivity of energetic co-crystals CL-20/TNT and CL-20/DNB to increase more significantly. Detonation has occurred under the reflection velocity of 4 km/s, energetic co-crystals are easier to polymerize than solvent co-crystals, and are not obviously affected by voids. The results show that the energy of the wave decreases after sweeping over the void, which reduces the chemical reaction frequency downstream of the void and affects the detonation performance, especially the solvent co-crystals.

Abstract:Multiscale shock technique (MSST) has been shown to accurately reproduce the thermodynamic and chemical reaction paths throughout the shock wave fronts and reaction zone of shock initiation of energetic materials. A 1:1 cocrystal of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane/trinitrotoluene (CL20/TNT) is shocked along the < 110 > orientations under the conditions of shock velocities lying in the range 6-10 km.s(-1) in ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Products recognition analysis leads to reactions occurring with shock velocities of 7 km.s(-1) or stronger, and the shock initiation pressure is 24.56 GPa obtained from the conservation of Rankine-Hugoniot relation. Comparisons of the relationships are carried out between shock velocity and particle velocity, shock velocities and elastic-plastic transition. During shock initiation with the shock velocities lying in the range 7-8 km.s(-1), the shocked systems correspond to an elastic-plastic deformation, primary chemical reactions, and secondary chemical reactions. And the elastic-plastic transition coincides with the chemical reaction at higher shock velocity (>= 9 km.s(-1)), the cocrystal material response is over-driven, and all the thermodynamic properties show steep gradients, the compressed material by the shock wave steps into the plastic region, and a large number of carbon atoms appear in the early stage of over-driven shock initiation.

Abstract:The slip and anisotropy of 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TATB) crystal under shock loading along various directions were investigated using molecular dynamics simulation combined with reactive force field (ReaxFF). The shock strength was approximately 10 GPa, and seven shock orientations normal to the (101), (111), (011), (110), (010), (100), and (001) crystal planes were considered. For these shock directions, the slip systems that are likely to be activated are predicted to be on the {001} plane, whereas others that could not be activated exhibit large shear stress barriers. These slip characteristics are consistent with the layered structure of TATB crystal along the c axis and the planar structure of TATB molecule. The most favorable slip systems are suggested to be (101)/{001}<100>, (111)/{001}<010>, (011)/{001}<010>, (110)/{001}<010>, (010)4001} <<(110)over bar>>, (100)/{001}<120>, and (001)/{001}<010>. TATB crystal exhibits anisotropic response to shock loading, that is, the shear stress, energy, temperature, and chemical reactivity during shear deformation depend on shock direction. For the (100) and (001) shock planes, the shear stress barrier is relatively high and lasts for a long time, leading to fast energy accumulation and temperature increment, which, in turn, increase the chemical reactivity. In contrast, for the (101) and (111) shock planes, the small shear stress barrier results in slow energy accumulation and temperature rise and, thus, low chemical reactivity. The (011), (110), and (010) shock planes exhibit intermediate responses. The sensitivity of the seven shock planes can be ranked as follows: (101), (111) < (011), (110), (010) < (100), (001). This study provides microscale insight into the response mechanisms and structure-property relationship of TATB crystal under dynamic loading and may facilitate designing explosives with high energy but low sensitivity.

Abstract:Abstract The thermal decomposition process of CL-20/TNT co-crystal in different compression states is simulated by ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamics method. Co-crystals models with different degrees of compression are obtained under four pressures of atmospheric pressure, 4.6GPa, 9.2GPa and 18.4GPa. The potential energy evolution, product formation and cluster evolution in the process are analyzed. We find that the formation of clusters is the key to the decomposition process. When the system is compressed, there will be more clusters which can bind the free atoms, resulting in the reaction to be inhibited. Other evolution information conforms this.

Abstract:High-energy low-sensitivity explosives are research objectives in the field of energetic materials, and the formation of cocrystals is an important method to improve the safety of explosives. However, the sensitivity reduction mechanism of cocrystal explosives is still unclear. In this study, CL-20/TNT, CL-20 and TNT crystals were taken as research objects. On the basis of the ReaxFF-lg reactive force field, the propagation process of the wave front in the crystals at different impact velocities was simulated. The molecular dynamics data were used to analyze the molecular structure changes and initial chemical reactions, and to explore the sensitivity reduction mechanism of the CL-20/TNT cocrystal. The results showed that the chemical reaction of the CL-20/TNT cocrystal, compared with the CL-20 single crystal, is different under different impact velocities. At an impact velocity of 2 km/s, polymerization and separation of the component molecules weakened the decomposition of CL-20. At an impact velocity of 3 km/s, the decay rates of CL-20 and TNT in the cocrystal decreased, and the intermediate products were enhanced, such as nitrogen oxides. At an impact velocity of 4 km/s, the cocrystal had little effect on the decay rates of the molecules and formation of CO2, but it enhanced formation of N2 and H2O. This may explain the reason for the impact-sensitivity reduction of the CL-20/TNT cocrystal.

Abstract:Study on the dynamic process of CL-20 crystal under impact is critical for the safe utilization of energetic materials under extreme conditions. Herein, the mechanical and structural evolution of CL-20 under the impact of a diamond ball is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulation. The considerations are given to the effect of different impact velocity, impact direction and impact angle. It is found that a high impact velocity results in a large indentation depth and force, as well as more significant energy transition and the formation of a large number of molecular fragments. Moreover, CL-20 exhibits weak anisotropy along different impact directions due to the crystalline distribution anisotropy. Furthermore, the mechanical response of CL-20 is angle-dependent, which is caused by the discrepancy in local molecular re-arrangement. These results may enhance the understanding of the mechanical behavior of CL-20 and promote its wide applications.

Abstract:A dynamic crystal plasticity model for a low-symmetric β-cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine single crystal with only limited operative slip systems has been developed, accounting for nonlinear elasticity, volumetric coupling with deviatoric behavior and thermo-dynamical consistence. Based on the decomposition of the stress tensor, a modified equation of state for anisotropic materials is employed. Simulations of the planar impact on the β-cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine single crystal show good agreement with existing particle velocity data in the case of (110) and (011). Pressure snapshots, the dislocation density, the shear stress and the strain localization for β-cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine single crystal under shocked loading are discussed. The present model provides more insights into a range of complex, orientation-dependent elastic and inelastic behaviors in shocked explosive crystals than isotropic elastic–plastic constitutive descriptions. The proposed formulation and algorithms can also be applied to study other low-symmetric crystals under high-pressure shocked loading that deform mainly by crystallographic slip.

Abstract:To understand the initial chemical reaction mechanism of the heterogeneous explosive hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), it is necessary to study the shock initiation mechanism of this nanovoid-containing crystal. In this paper, supercells of CL-20 with different void sizes were constructed. The chemical reactions induced by different impact velocities were calculated using molecular dynamics based on the ReaxFF-lg reactive force field. The effects of impact velocities and void sizes on the chemical reactions of the CL-20 crystal were discussed. The initial reaction of CL-20 molecules around the voids was analyzed, and the evolution of the formation and breakage of chemical bonds as well as the elementary reactions were also obtained. It is found that under an impact, the CL-20 molecules around the voids first undergo polymerization of the N–O bonds and then breakage of the C–N, N–N, and C–H bonds occurs. Increased void size and impact velocity lead to higher temperature "hot spots" and more intense chemical reactions, but have little effect on the breaking sequence of chemical bonds in the CL-20 molecules.
Compressive Shear Reactive Molecular Dynamics Studies Indicating That Cocrystals of TNT/CL-20 Decrease Sensitivity

Abstract:To gain an atomistic-level understanding of how compounding the TNT and CL-20 energetic materials into a TNT/CL-20 cocrystal might affect the sensitivity, we carried out the compressiveshear reactive molecular dynamics (CS-RMD) simulations. Comparing with the pure crystal of CL-20, we find that the cocrystal is much less sensitive. We find that the molecular origin of the energy barrier for anisotropic shear results from steric hindrance toward shearing of adjacent slip planes during shear deformation, which is decreased for the cocrystal. To compare the sensitivity for different crystals, we chose the shear slip system with lowest energy barrier as the most plausible one under external stresses for each crystal. Then we used the temperature rise and molecule decomposition as effective measures to distinguish sensitivities. Considering the criterion as number NO2 fragments produced, we find that the cocrystal has lower shear-induced initiation sensitivity by 70% under atmospheric pressure and 46% under high pressure (similar to 5 GPa) than CL-20. Based on the temperature increase rate, the cocrystal has initiation sensitivity lower by 22% under high pressure (similar to 5 GPa) than CL-20. These results are consistent with available experimental results, further validating the CS-RD model for distinguishing between sensitive and insensitive materials rapidly (within a few picoseconds of MD).
Directly Insight Into The Inter- And Intramolecular Interactions Of Cl-20/Tnt Energetic Cocrystal Through The Theoretical Simulations Of Thz Spectroscopy

Abstract:Compared with cocrystal coformers, an explosive cocrystal has distinctive packing arrangements and complex intermolecular interactions. Identifying the spectral signatures of an explosive cocrystal and understanding the molecular low-frequency modes by means of the spectrum in the terahertz range are of great worth to the explicit mechanism of cocrystal formation. In this work, on the basis of the joint molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and solid-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have investigated the terahertz (THz) absorption spectra of the CL-20/TNT cocrystal and its different directions as well as cocrystal coformers and determined the systematic and all-sided assignments of corresponding THz vibration modes. The THz spectral comparison of the cocrystal with different directions and the cocrystal coformers indicates that the CL-20/TNT cocrystal has five fresh low-frequency absorption features as unique and discernible peaks for identification, in which 0.25, 0.73, and 0.87 THz are attributed to intensive crystalline vibrations; 0.87 THz is also caused by C-H-O hydrogen-bonding bending vibrations; 1.60 and 1.85 THz features originate from C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond stretching vibrations. Additionally, the THz spectrum of the (001) direction of the CL-20/TNT cocrystal verifies that the molecular conformation of the CL-20 is the same as that in the beta-polymorph, other than the initial conformation of raw material epsilon-CL-20.
Comparative studies on structure, sensitivity and mechanical properties of CL-20/DNDAP cocrystal and composite by molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation was performed on 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), 2,4-dinitro-2,4-diazapentane (DNDAP), and CL-20/DNDAP cocrystal and composite under COMPASS force field at different temperatures. The binding energy (E-bind), radial distribution function (RDF), trigger bond length, cohesive energy density (CED) and mechanical properties were studied and compared. The results show that the binding energy of the cocrystal is evidently higher than that of the composite at the same temperature. RDF analysis reveals that hydrogen bonds and vdW forces between CL-20 and DNDAP exist in both CL-20/DNDAP cocrystal and composite, and the interactions in the cocrystal are stronger than those in the composite. The maximum trigger bond length decreases in the order epsilon-CL-20 > CL-20/DNDAP composite > CL-20/DNDAP cocrystal. Moreover, the rigidity and stiffness of the cocrystal and composite decrease compared to that of CL-20, while the ductility and elasticity are better than that of the two pure components. These results demonstrate that CL-20/DNDAP cocrystal might be very promising in explosive applications.
Atomistic Simulation on Pyrolysis Mechanism of CL-20/TNT Cocrystal Explosive

Abstract:The relationship of reaction kinetic process with temperatures and densities for pyrolysis of CL-20/TNT co-crystal was studied using reactive force field(ReaxFF) molecular dynamics simulation.The evolution distribution of potential energy and total species,decay kinetics and kinetic parameters for thermal decomposition reaction of CL-20 and TNT were analyzed.Product identification analyses show that the breaking of-NO2 bond from CL-20 molecules is the initial reaction pathway for thermal decomposition of the cocrystal.With increasing the cocrystal density, the reaction energy barrier of CL-20 and TNT molecule decomposition increases correspondingly.The decomposition process of TNT has an inhibition action on the decomposition of CL-20.Final products for thermal decomposition of the cocrystal are N2, H2O and CO2.The production rate decreases in the order of N2>H2O>CO2.
Theoretical investigations on CL-20/ANTA co-crystal explosive via molecular dynamics method

Abstract:Context: The study of CL-20 co-crystal has always been a focal point within the field of energetic material modification. In this study, we employed a combination of density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the properties of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20)/3-amino-5-nitro-1,2,4-triazole (ANTA) with different molar ratios ranging from 4:1 to 1:4. Additionally, EXPLO-5 software utilized to predict the detonation properties and products of pure CL-20, ANTA, and CL-20/ANTA systems. The results revealed that there was an interaction between CL-20 and ANTA molecules, which had the potential to form a co-crystal. The most likely molar ratio for co-crystal formation was 1:1, and the main driving forces for co-crystal formation were electrostatic force, dispersion force, and van der Waals force. The co-crystal explosive exhibited moderate sensitivity and excellent mechanical properties. Furthermore, the co-crystal detonation performance at a molar ratio of 1:1 was between that of CL-20 and ANTA, representing a new type of insensitive high-energy material. Methods: The properties of CL-20/ANTA co-crystal were predicted by molecular dynamics (MD) method under Materials Studio software. For the whole MD simulations, set the temperature at 298 K, and the pressure was 0.0001 GPa. Conducted MD simulation under the NPT ensemble for a total simulation duration of 1 ns. The first 0.5 ns was used for thermodynamic equilibrium, and the last 0.5 ns was used for statistical calculation and analysis. Sampling was recorded every 10 fs during the calculation.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic deformation behavior of nanocrytalline Ti has been investigated under tension and compression normal to the {0001}, { 1 ¯ 010 } , and { 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 } planes. The results indicate that the plastic deformation strongly depends on crystal orientation and loading directions. Under tension normal to basal plane, the deformation mechanism is mainly the grain reorientation and the subsequent deformation twinning. Under compression, the transformation of hexagonal-close packed (HCP)-Ti to face-centered cubic (FCC)-Ti dominates the deformation. When loading is normal to the prismatic planes (both { 1 ¯ 010 } and { 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 } ), the deformation mechanism is primarily the phase transformation among HCP, body-centered cubic (BCC), and FCC structures, regardless of loading mode. The orientation relations (OR) of {0001}HCP║{111}FCC and 〈 1 ¯ 210 〉 HCP | | 〈 110 〉 FCC , and { 10 1 ¯ 0 } HCP | | { 1 1 ¯ 0 } FCC and 〈 0001 〉 HCP | | 〈 010 〉 FCC between the HCP and FCC phases have been observed in the present work. For the transformation of HCP → BCC → HCP, the OR is 0001 α 1 | | { 110 } β | | { 10 1 ¯ 0 } α 2 (HCP phase before the critical strain is defined as α 1-Ti, BCC phase is defined as β-Ti, and the HCP phase after the critical strain is defined as α 2-Ti). Energy evolution during the various loading processes further shows the plastic anisotropy of nanocrystalline Ti is determined by the stacking order of the atoms. The results in the present work will promote the in-depth study of the plastic deformation mechanism of HCP materials.
Theoretical investigations on CL‐20/TNBA co-crystal explosive via density functional method and molecular dynamics method

Abstract:The study of CL-20 co-crystal has always been a focal point within the field of energetic material modification. In this study, we employed the density functional method and molecular dynamics method to investigate the properties of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20)/ 2,4,6-trinitro-3-bromoanisole (TNBA) with different molar ratios ranging from 9:1–1:9. This investigation encompassed surface electrostatic potential, atomic interaction line, binding energy, trigger bond length, radial distribution function, cohesive energy density, and mechanical properties. Additionally, EXPLO-5 software was utilized to predict the detonation properties and products of pure CL-20, TNBA, and CL-20/TNBA systems. The results revealed significant differences in the surface electrostatic potential between CL-20 and TNBA molecules, indicating stronger interactions between different molecules than between identical molecules and suggesting the potential for co-crystal formation. At the molar ratio of 5:5, the binding energy was found to be the highest, signifying the most likely formation of a co-crystal. The main driving forces for co-crystal formation were electrostatic force and van der Waals force. The co-crystal explosive exhibited moderate sensitivity and excellent mechanical properties. Furthermore, the co-crystal detonation performance at a molar ratio of 5:5 was between that of CL-20 and TNBA, representing a new type of insensitive high-energy material.

Abstract:In order to understand the phenomenon and mechanism of thermal ignition and hot spots growth in energetic materials,spatiotemporal behaviors of thermal shock propagation in CL-20/TNT co-crystal and initial chemical reaction process were studied by first principles based ReaxFF reactive force field molecular dynamics simulations.Thermal shock mechanical wave induced by continuous fast heating of two ends in energetic materials and keeping it at high temperatures combining NVT ensemble and Berendsen temperature coupling method.In addition,two kinds of high temperature conditions (3000,4000 K) were set up to study the influence of temperature difference on the initial thermal decomposition rate.When thermal loading is 4000 K,particle instantaneous translation rate can reach 0.5 km·s-1 in early thermal shock propagation process,higher than the situation of 3000 K.At the same time,high temperature will lead co-crystal energetic materials decomposition.Here,molecule recognition algorithm is used to analyze the initial products and species.The decomposition rate of CL-20 is higher than that of TNT in the thermal shock propagation process under two kinds of thermal loading.The higher temperature of the thermal loading,the less time required to completely decompose.Product identification analysis shows that the main products of CL-20/TNT thermal decomposition are NO2,NO,H2O,N2,CO,CO2,HONO,H2O2,CHON,H2N,CH2O,where,NO2 is the early initial thermal decomposition product,N2,CO2 and H2O are the final products.
