Abstract:Abstract For purpose of investigating the damage mechanism and tensile properties of the nanocrystalline CoCrCuFeNi high-entropy alloy, the tension experiment simulations were performed using the molecular dynamics method. The effects of the grain size, strain rate, experiment temperature, and percentage of components were considered in detail. By changing the simulated conditions of the tension experiment, the deformation and the grain growth of the nanocrystalline CoCrCuFeNi high-entropy alloy were mentioned and analyzed. The important mechanical factors such as phase transformation, stress-strain relation, shear strain, tensile strength, dislocation density, and von Mises stress were strongly influenced by changing the simulated conditions and deeply discussed.

In-situ Investigation Via High Energy X-ray Diffraction of Stress-Induced(0002)α→(110)β Transformation in a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr Alloy

Abstract:The deformation and load partitioning mechanisms among phases are critical to the detailed understanding of heterogeneous stress distributions at the submicron scale during the process of elastic-plastic transformation in dual-phase (α+β) titanium alloys. Therefore, in this work, a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr titanium alloy was investigated via in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction. We examined the evolution of the lattice strain, peak intensity, and full width at half maximum under uniaxial tensile loading at room temperature. The results indicated that the stress-induced (0002)α→(110)β transformation can be preferentially initiated for lattice strains of 702 × 10−6–1500 × 10−6 and 592 × 10−6–1355 × 10−6 during the elastic loading stage of the {0002}α and {110}β reflections, respectively. In addition, various dog-bone-shaped specimens with interrupted strain amplitudes (0.3%, 3%, 5% and 8.5%) were characterized via transmission electron microscopy. The corresponding selected area electron diffraction pattern confirmed the occurrence of a (0002)α//(110)β Burgers orientation relationship when the alloy was subjected to a strain of ε = 0.3%. Furthermore, the results revealed that the anisotropic non-linear response of specific reflections (i.e., the (0002)α and (110)β reflections) will cause a phase transformation.

Abstract:This study investigates the plastic deformation-induced fcc → hcp → bcc phase transition within nanograins in an ultra-strong gradient nanostructured surface layer on Fe 45 Mn 35 Cr 10 Co 10 compositionally complex alloy (CCA), subjected to a single point cubic boron nitride turning process. High-resolution transmission electron microscope observations reveal a novel atomic movement mechanism of this transition following a unique Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation relationship. Unlike the previously validated Bogers-Burgers-Olson-Cohen model, which follows different orientation relationships and relies on two shear components, this study demonstrates that the phase transition in this CCA is cooperatively completed by two sets of half-partial dislocation dipoles and associated atom shuffling.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) method is employed to simulate the tensile process of uncracked and cracked FeNiCrCoCu high-entropy alloy (HEA) under NVT and NPT ensembles for different temperatures, strain rates, and Cu element contents. The results indicate that during tensile process, the FCC structure and the irregular atomic structure can be transformed into each other. Under the different ensembles, the degree of mutual transformation among atoms and the degree of amorphization of these two models are different. An increase in temperature or Cu element content can reduce the mechanical properties of HEA, while an increase in strain rate can enhance the mechanical properties of HEA. The presence of cracks can accelerate the plastic deformation of HEA. When the model fractures, a decrease of FCC structure results in a generation of dislocations, however, when the model does not fracture, the reduction of FCC structure can accelerate the generation rate of dislocations.

Abstract:Eutectic high entropy alloys are noted for their excellent castability and comprehensive mechanical properties. The excellent mechanical properties are closely related to the activation and evolution of deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale. In this work, AlCoCrFeNi 2.1 alloy is taken as the research object. The mechanical behaviors and deformation mechanisms of the FCC and B2 single crystals with different orientations and the FCC/B2 composites with K-S orientation relationship during nanoindentation processes are systematically studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the mechanical behaviors of FCC single crystals are significantly orientation-dependent, meanwhile, the indentation force of [110] single crystal is the lowest at the elastic–plastic transition point, and that for [100] single crystal is the lowest in plastic deformation stage. Compared with FCC, the stress for B2 single crystals at the elastic–plastic transition point is higher. However, more deformation systems such as stacking faults, twins and dislocation loops are activated in FCC single crystal during the plastic deformation process, resulting in higher indentation force. For composites, the flow stress increases with the increase of B2 phase thickness during the initial stage of deformation. When indenter penetrates heterogeneous interface, the significantly increased deformation system in FCC phase leads to a significant increase in indentation force. The mechanical behaviors and deformation mechanisms depend on the component single crystal. When the thickness of the component layer is less than 15 nm, the heterogeneous interfaces fail to prevent the dislocation slip and improve the indentation force. The results will enrich the plastic deformation mechanisms of multi-principal eutectic alloys and provide guidance for the design of nanocrystalline metallic materials.

Abstract:Two important and desirable properties of materials for most structural applications are high tensile strength and ductility, which typically require high work hardening to delay necking. Here, we designed and tensile tested a face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe-Cr-Co-Ni medium-entropy alloy in which multiple deformation mechanisms are triggered during tensile loading at different temperatures to induce sustained work hardening. Our strategy involved control of the relative stabilities of the fcc, hcp (hexagonal close-packed), and bcc (body-centered cubic) phases in this quaternary system via high-throughput thermodynamic calculations. This alloy not only exhibits extensive deformation-induced nanotwinning at room temperature, but also displays a two-step sequential phase transformation [γ (fcc) → ε (hcp) martensite → α' (bcc) martensite] at 77 K, which contrasts with the single-step phase transformation [γ → ε martensite] observed in many other fcc high/medium entropy alloys with a low stacking fault energy. The sequence of phase transformation at 77K was supported by first-principles density functional theory calculations. This work provides new templates for the design of alloys capable of multiple deformation mechanisms for sustained work hardening.

Abstract:As the research on high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is gradually deepening, it has been reported that chemical short-range order (CSRO) remarkably influences their mechanical performances. Here, the atomic models of FCC Co30Fe16.67Ni36.67Ti16.67 HEAs containing different levels of CSRO were constructed using the Monte Carlo (MC) atom swaps and molecular dynamics (MD) hybrid method. Tensile loads were applied to Co30Fe16.67Ni36.67Ti16.67 HEAs along [001], [110] and [111] crystal orientations at 1 K and 300 K to reveal from the atomic scale how CSRO influences mechanical performances and plastic deformation. The results indicate that significant CSRO appears in Fe-Ti atomic pair, and as the annealing temperature rises, the CSRO level reduces. The crystal orientation notably affects the deformation behavior of Co30Fe16.67Ni36.67Ti16.67 HEAs, and CSRO increase the anisotropy. In terms of plastic deformation mechanism, stretching along [001] crystal orientation is the FCC to BCC phase transition and stretching along [110] and [111] crystal orientations are Shockley dislocations nucleation and slip. CSRO can simultaneously improve the strength and ductility of Co30Fe16.67Ni36.67Ti16.67 HEAs. This is because CSRO increases the energy required for the FCC to BCC phase transition and the stacking fault energy, which impedes the plastic deformation during stretching. Owing to the weakened atomic thermal vibrations, low temperature hinders the FCC to BCC phase transition and dislocations nucleation, which strengthens Co30Fe16.67Ni36.67Ti16.67 HEAs.

Abstract:Due to its outstanding mechanical properties, anti-corrosion properties, and anti-irradiation swelling properties, Fe-Cr alloy has been fully improved and developed in nuclear energy applications as a structural material. In order to ensure the performance stability of γ phase Fe-Cr alloy, the present study adopts molecular dynamics simulation to explore its plastic deformation mechanism. By constructing the slip model and solving the generalized stacking fault energy and Peierls-Nabarro equation, it is found that {110} is the preferentially activated slip system. By constructing the twin model and solving the generalized plane fault energy, it is found that twin is preferred over slip in {112} system. The above findings are also verified through stretching Fe-Cr specimen along the [100] direction by molecular dynamics simulations. In addition, in the composition range of 15at.%-25at.% Cr, the increase of Cr content has the negative effect on slip but the positive one on twin formation.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of multi-principal element alloys show a big difference with or without Cr additions. In this work, the roles of Cr on the mechanical properties, especially the plastic deformation mechanism of CoCrxNi alloys are systematically investigated. The results indicate the strength and ductility of CoCrxNi alloys are improved simultaneously with the increase of Cr. Deformation twin bands are significantly thinner. The first principle calculations indicate the average SFE is lower and energetic fluctuation is larger for CoCrNi than that of CoNi, which may contribute to the more nucleation of nano-twins with the increase of Cr. Meanwhile, a transition of dislocation pattern from dislocation cells to slip bands is observed. Not only the formation of nano-twins, but also the dislocation patterns are the reason for the excellent plasticity and work hardening ability of CoCrNi alloy.

Abstract:Ni-Cr-Mo alloys are widely-used materials in various critical applications owing to their excellent balance of strength and ductility. The precipitates play a significant role in the exceptional mechanical properties of these alloys, yet the precise microscopic mechanisms underpinning the enhanced properties are still open. Here, the atomistic simulation based on molecular dynamics (MD) was employed to investigate the deformation behavior and mechanism of the precipitation-strengthened single crystal Ni-Cr-Mo alloy under uniaxial loading at temperatures of 300 K, 500 K, 700 K, and 900 K. The results revealed high temperature-induced softening under both tension and compression. Furthermore, the tension-compression asymmetry in ultimate strength is influenced by the disparity in Schmid factor of leading Shockley partial dislocations. By monitoring the evolution of microscopic defects during deformation, the Shockley partial dislocation slip was identified as the primary deformation mechanism in the plastic regime at 300 K, 500 K, 700 K, and 900 K. Based on that, a flow stress representation model was proposed. Moreover, the investigation on the nanoscale Ni 2 (Cr, Mo) precipitates revealed the transition from the Orowan bypass mechanism to the shearing mechanism under uniaxial loading, accompanied by the formation of dislocation tangles. The dislocation tangles impeded dislocation slip, enhancing the mechanical properties of the alloy. The precipitate can significantly promote the formation of the lamellar dislocation structure under compression at 900 K.

Abstract:Emerging high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit high strength, high ductility and high toughness relative to traditional alloys based on one or two principal elements. The superior mechanical properties are derived from a synergy of multiple deformation mechanisms and their interactions at different stages of plastic straining. It is thus important to uncover the activation and operation of deformation mechanisms in these materials for property optimization and potential structure applications. The present work carried out in-situ tensile deformation of a CrMnFeCoNi HEA at room temperature. The strain hardening rate did not change monotonically during tensile deformation. Surface morphology evolution revealed the effects of massive dislocation activity, activation of multiple slip bands and their interactions on the strain hardening rate. Crack-tip-opening-angle measurements show that the current alloy possesses high fracture toughness. Cracks initiated at dense slip zones and grain boundaries, and propagated gradually, eventually coalescing into main cracks and resulting in final fracture.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) composed of equal numbers of five or more elements exhibit excellent mechanical properties. The unique nanostructures for the materials may have novel plastic deformation. By using molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic deformation of single-crystal and polycrystalline CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys was analyzed under tension and compression. The simulation results suggested that the FCC→HCP phase transformation occurred during the plastic deformation of the HEA material. Meanwhile, for the compressive loading, grain refinement occurred due to the interaction of intrinsic stacking faults (SFs) with different direction, and cause the discrepancy of crystal orientation, which efficiently improve the strength of the material. As the strain increased, some parallel twins appeared in HCP phase regions, generating the stress fluctuation behavior shown in the stress-strain curves. The atomic snapshots of polycrystalline CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy show homogeneous dislocations nucleation, and that the distance of different intrinsic SFs with the same direction of movement was equal to eight layers of atoms. The results are qualitatively consistent with experiments and provide a fundamental understanding of plastic deformation in FCC CoCrFeMnNi HEA.

Abstract:Abstract The transformation induced plasticity phenomenon occurs when one phase transforms to another one during plastic deformation, which is usually diffusionless. Here we present elemental partitioning-mediated crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation during quasi-static plastic deformation, in an alloy in form of a Cr-Ni-Co (crystalline)/Zr-Ti-Nb-Hf-Ni-Co (amorphous) nanolaminated composite, where the constitute elements of the two phases have large negative mixing enthalpy. Upon plastic deformation, atomic intermixing occurs between adjacent amorphous and crystalline phases due to extensive rearrangement of atoms at the interfaces. The large negative mixing enthalpy among the constituent elements promotes amorphous phase transformation of the original crystalline phase, which shows different composition and short-range-order structure compared with the other amorphous phase. The reduced size of the crystalline phase shortens mean-free-path of dislocations, facilitating strain hardening. The enthalpy-guided alloy design based on crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation opens up an avenue for the development of crystal-glass composite alloys with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

Abstract:Deformation-induced martensitic transformation in Fe-Co-Ni-Cr-Mn high entropy alloy (HEA) thin film with nanocolumnar growth feature are revealed to readily occur at intermediate deposition power rather than low and high deposition power ranges. The high probability of deformation-induced martensitic transformation from face-centered cubic (FCC) to hexagonal close-packed (HCP) phase in 150 W-film results in low nanoindentation hardness and compressive yield strength, in comparison with 60 W-and 210 W -films. Dependence of the martensitic transformation probability has been explained in terms of the com-petition between grain size effect and nanocolumn cohesion effect on the phase metastability. The in-creased grain size with deposition power favors the mechanical instability of FCC parent phase caused by the weakened slip obstruction, while the enhanced nanocolumn cohesion with deposition power hinders the formation of HCP martensite due to the increased activation energy for martensitic transformation. The grain size effect is dominated over the cohesion between nanocolumn at low deposition power range, while column cohesion effect is dominant at high deposition power range, which gives rise to the crossover of FCC-to-HCP with deposition power. This work might provide a deeper understanding in phase metastability of sputtered films, for instance, the effect of deposition power on deformation-induced martensitic trans-formation.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Unraveling the Deformation Behavior of the Fe45Co25Ni10V20 High Entropy Alloy

Abstract:Here we report on the tensile deformation behavior of a face-centered cubic (FCC)-structured Fe45Co25Ni10V20 high-entropy alloy at cryogenic temperature (77 K). The alloy displays an impressive 1.1 GPa tensile strength while maintaining an ultrahigh fracture elongation of 82% with a minimum strain hardening rate at a true strain of about 40%. We elucidate such unique mechanical properties, originating from the strain-induced FCC to body-centered cubic (BCC) martensitic transformation, where the high-stress concentrations at grain boundaries or inter-section of stacking faults can stimulate phase transition. The martensitic transformation can induce strain softening by consuming the stored deformation energy while contributing to the strain hardening via the transformation itself and further deformation of BCC phases. Such a dynamic balance between softening and hardening enables a relatively uniform plastic flow, resulting in a plastic deformation with a strain range of up to 35% delaying macroscopic necking. The findings provide further insights into the significance of transformation-induced plasticity effects on the cryogenic performance of alloys.

Abstract:<p>High-entropy alloys (HEA) present high hardness, but low tensile ductility. Here, deformation behaviour of the nanotwinned Cu/HEA FeCoCrNi nanolaminates prepared by the previous experiment is investigated using atomic simulations. The result shows the nucleation and glide of lattice dislocations in the Cu layers dominate the initial plastic deformation in Cu/HEA multilayers, and these gliding dislocations are deposited at the twinning boundary. With the increasing strain, the dislocations are activated in HEA layer, and deposited in the Cu-HEA interface, finally facilitate slip transmission from the HEA layer to the Cu layer. The flow stress decreases and keeps a constant value with increasing nanotwinned Cu/HEA FeCoCrNi layer number, which depends upon the slip transmission and interfacial dislocation to govern strain hardening.</p>

Abstract:Incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) can significantly affect the mechanical properties of twin-structured metals. However, most previous studies have focused on the deformation mechanism of the coherent twin boundary (CTB), and metals with ITB-accommodated plasticity still require further investigation. In this study, deformation mechanisms of FCC-structured nanocrystal metals with ITBs were investigated using molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. We revealed that three deformation mechanisms occur in metals with ITBs. The first type of deformation was observed in Au, where the plasticity is governed by partial dislocation intersections with CTBs or reactions with each other to form Lomer–Cottrell (L–C) locks. In the second type, found in Al, the deformation is governed by reversible ITB migration. The third type of deformation, in Ni and Cu, is governed by partial dislocations emitted from the ITB or the tips of the stacking faults (SFs). The observed L–C lock formation, as well as the reversible ITB migration and partial dislocation emission from the tips of SFs, have rarely been reported before.

Abstract:The correlation between the generalized stacking fault energy and the strengthening mechanisms of Cr–Fe–Co–Ni high-entropy alloys during uniaxial tensile deformation is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. An increase in the Cr and Fe content decreases the generalized stacking fault energy, while an opposite trend is observed for the content of Co and Ni. A linear correlation is identified between the unstable stacking fault energy and the yield stress. Alloys with a lower Fe content and higher Co and Ni contents show a higher unstable stacking fault energy, and hence higher yield stress. A high density of Lomer–Cottrell locks or deformation twins leads to higher flow stress. The deformation twins play a more important role in enhancing the flow stress as compared to sessile dislocations. Additionally, high unstable stacking fault energy is required to stabilize the defects formed and contribute to increasing flow stress. For a low unstable stacking fault energy, the plastic deformation progresses at lower stress and a bidirectional defect transformation is observed. The results agree with recent experiments and serve as guidelines for how the composition can be used to enhance the yield strength and the efficiency of strengthening mechanisms in Cr–Fe–Co–Ni high-entropy alloys.
