Abstract:Iris pseudacorus L. (Iridaceae), or yellow flag iris, is an emergent aquatic macrophyte which has been distributed globally as an ornamental pond plant. The species spreads rapidly through both sexual and vegetative means, and can become highly invasive in its introduced range. Iris pseudacorus is a declared invader in South Africa, but little is known about the distribution and invasive potential of the species in the Southern Hemisphere, potentially hindering the effectiveness of control efforts. This study addresses this knowledge gap in a South African context, providing insight into the invasion autecology of I. pseudacorus in the country. Through field surveys, we confirmed the presence of the invader in eight of the country's nine provinces and, as of March 2023, we report a four-fold increase in the number of distribution records obtained since 2015. Additionally, we determined a high sexual reproductive output and germinability which resulted in a mean of ∼ 774 germinable seeds produced per m2 across the invasive South African range. By mapping the confirmed distribution of the species in South Africa and quantifying its sexual reproductive output and germinability of its seeds, these results will better equip control organisations to manage I. pseudacorus invasions in South Africa to mitigate its ecological impacts.

Abstract:Through the specific field observation of Iris speculatrix, its outcrossing index , pollen vitality and stigma receptivity , the ratio of pollen and ovule , artificial pollination and bagging were investigated to understand the flower feature , blossom dynamic and breeding system .Results showed that under the natural climate of Hangzhou , the flow-ering stage of populations was about 35 d from May to June, and the majority of plants kept blooming in 8th May to 20th May.The flowering stage for individual plant was 3-6 days.The life span of a single flower was about 3 d. The flowers, setting on the same inflorescence , were monoecism.Male and female flowers mature at the same time , and the distance between anther and stigma was about 3 mm.The out cross index(OCI)was 4, and pollen-ovule ratio ( P/O) was 552 .Taking the results of the emasculated , bagged and artificial pollination experiment together , it indi-cated that Iris speculatrix flower is a mixed-crossing system with out-crossing affinity as the main breeding form and concomitance out-crossing.Artificial pollination on fruit set rate was higher than the natural pollination .It was con-firmed that under natural conditions , the reproductive system of Iris speculatrix was affected by floral organ structure and environmental factors .

Abstract:Iris pseudacorus is an erect glabrous perennial, 40-150 cm tall. The rhizome is 1-4 cm in diameter, with roots usually 10-20 cm long but up to 30 cm. The leaves, which number about 10 per ramet, are rather glaucous, 50-100 cm x 10-30 mm, with raised midrib, coming to a fine point. They are broad, ensiform, about equalling the often-branched compressed terete scape. The spathes have broadly scarious margins towards the top and are 5-10-flowered. Abstract:Iris (Iris sp.) is a popular and widely planted herbaceous perennial. However, most iris species go dormant without any aesthetic quality for 5–6 months in the transition zone between the temperate and subtropical climates. To investigate the effects of species/cultivars, leaf shape, and air temperature conditions on the ability to stay green, 12 popular species and cultivars in the transition zone were evaluated. Iris tested included the following species: roof iris (I. tectorum), japanese iris (I. japonica), long leafed flag (I. halophila), yellow flag (I. pseudacorus), blood iris (I. sanguinea), japanese water iris (I. ensata), and smallflower iris (I. speculatrix) and the following cultivars: ‘Chinensis’ milky iris (I. lactea var. chinensis), ‘Bryce Leigh’ louisiana iris (I. hexagonae), ‘Black Swan’ german iris (I. germanica), ‘Careless Sally’ siberian iris (I. sibirica), and ‘Loyalty’ japanese water iris (I. ensata). We conducted a 2-year field study on mature iris populations and evaluated the percentage of green leaves duringwinter retention and spring recovery using a digital image analysis (DIA). Green period during this study was calculated using predicted sigmoid curves based on the percentage of green leaves. The present study revealed that iris species/cultivars and air temperatures had considerable influence on the duration of the green period. Both evergreen and deciduous iris phenotypes exist with three different leaf shapes, among which the average green period of fan-shaped leaf iris species and cultivars was the longest. Because there was no significant (P = 0.205) relationship between green period during this period and leaf lethal temperature (LT50), new cultivars with long green periods may be achieved without a simultaneous loss of cold tolerance in iris.

Abstract:UNLABELLED:PREMISE OF THE STUDY:Saltwater intrusion is one of the most widespread environmental threats to freshwater wetlands. Iris species worldwide are important members of these plant communities. Wetland irises reproduce clonally and sexually, which permits populations to spread and disperse in benign and stressful conditions. The ability of iris populations to tolerate and adapt to elevated salinity can play an important role in determining the long-term health of wetland ecosystems. •METHODS:We used microsatellite markers to evaluate population structure and genetic diversity, and we performed a common garden experiment to examine the effect of salinity on the growth and reproduction of wild Iris hexagona collected from freshwater and brackish wetlands. •KEY RESULTS:Colonies were genetically distinct, with average to high heterozygosity (0.55-0.66) for a clonal species. Salinity had negative linear effects on leaf mass (g), clonal growth (g), root mass (g), and flower numbers, and it had nonlinear effects on seed numbers and seed mass (mg). The greatest sexual reproduction occurred in the intermediate-salinity (4 parts per thousand) treatment. Flowering phenology was delayed for 5 days in the highest-salinity treatment. •CONCLUSIONS:We hypothesized that irises from brackish habitats would tolerate salinity better than freshwater irises would, but no difference in iris performance existed between the two habitats. The observed salinity tolerance and genetic diversity of I. hexagona indicate that populations will persist despite moderate increases in environmental salinity.

Abstract:Eichhornia crassipes is notorious as the world’s worst aquatic weed, and here we present all aspects of its biology, ecology and invasion behaviour within the framework of the new series of Botany Letters on Monographs on invasive plants in Europe. Native to the Amazon in South America, the plant has been spread around the world since the late 1800s through the ornamental plant trade due to its attractive lilac flowers, and is established on every continent except Antarctica. Its distribution is limited in Europe to the warmer southern regions by cold winter temperatures, but it has extensive ecological and socio-economic impacts where it invades. Its reproductive behaviour, characterised by rapid vegetative spread and high seed production, as well as its wide physiological tolerance, allows it to proliferate rapidly and persist in a wide range of environments. It has recently been regulated by the EU, under Regulation No. 1143/2014, which states that E. crassipes shall not be brought into the territory of the Union, kept, bred or transported to, from or within the Union. However, in the absence of effective control measures, such as herbicidal and biological control, it will continue to be a significant threat to European waterways, particularly in eutrophic waters, and under future climate change scenarios.

Abstract:Iris scariosa is a rhizomatous perennial whose taxonomy and distribution range still remain unclear. The results of our examination of literature, specimens, and wild plants have shown that I. glaucescens, described from Kazakhstan, and I. timofejewii, considered to be endemic to the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, are very closely related to I. scariosa. We have carried out molecular phylogenetic analyses for the first time to clarify the taxonomy of I. scariosa. For this, we sequenced six chloroplast DNA regions of an extended sampling that comprised the accepted species I. glaucescens and I. timofejewii, which has revealed their strong affinity to the accession of I. scariosa from the vicinity of Astrakhan, Russia. A thorough revision of the morphological characters has confirmed the lack of evident differences between I. scariosa and I. timofejewii. Thus, the analyses support a broad species circumscription of I. scariosa. We here reduce I. timofejewii, as well as I. curvifolia, considered to be endemic to Xinjiang, western China, to synonymy of I. scariosa. Color illustrations, updated nomenclature, and data on distribution of I. scariosa are provided. A lectotype for I. astrachanica and a neotype for I. timofejewii are designated here. Also, the phylogenetic relationships within I. subg. Iris are outlined, and an updated classification of the subgenus is proposed. We have recovered six major lineages within four major clades which we recognize as sections. Here, we propose two new nomenclatural combinations, a revised taxonomic treatment, and a new identification key to I. subg. Iris.

Abstract:Clarifying the conditions in which a species can germinate helps elucidate dispersal and establishment patterns. Conventionally considered a freshwater species, evidence indicates that the invasive Yellow flag iris ( Iris pseudacorus ), originally from North Africa, East Asia and Europe, tolerates saline conditions. Clarifying how water-dispersed I. pseudacorus seeds respond to seawater immersion is critical to understanding marine dispersal and invasion risk for coastal habitats. Accordingly, we evaluated the impact of salinity on the germination of I. pseudacorus. Using seeds from marine and freshwater I. pseudacorus populations, we assessed how the duration of immersion (15, 30, 60, and 90 days) in varying salinities (0, 13–15, 33–35 practical salinity units [PSU]) affected germination, and whether immersion in freshwater following saline exposure impacted germination or seed viability. Seeds sourced from freshwater consistently outperformed seeds from the marine population. Neither salinity concentration nor immersion duration had a statistically significant impact on germination, and nearly all seeds remained buoyant in marine saltwater (33–35 PSU) for 90 days. Saline immersion and germination conditions inhibited germination unless seeds received a freshwater recovery. The freshwater population of seeds had statistically significantly thicker seed coats, but there was no discernible difference in mean seed weight. Seeds from both populations remained viable after prolonged salinity exposure (90–165 days). We posit that observed differences in germination between the two populations may arise from seed dormancy mechanisms rather than seed fitness. Our results suggest that I. pseudacorus seeds could disperse vast distances through the marine environment, possibly habitat-hopping to reach increasingly suitable ecosystems.

Abstract:Irises are one of the world’s famous perennial flowering plant species. At present, there are 300 recognized species of Iris which are mainly distributed in the northern temperate regions. There are 60 species, 13 variants, and 5 forms in China (Shi and Gao, 2010). Iris sanguinea grows in swamps, swampy meadows, or sunny slopes, with ornamental and medicinal functions (Shang and Wang, 2014). It breeds easily and has strong resistance to diseases, pests, and cold. Rhizomes can survive in low temperature frozen soil down to –30 C (Cai et al., 2016). The flower of I. sanguinea comes mainly in blue violet (RHS N88A) (Wang and Wang, 2017). In 2017, a new light violet (RHS 85C) I. sanguinea cultivar Forest Fairy resulted from the hybridization of I. sanguinea · I. sanguinea f. albiflora which was crossed in 2007. Flowers of ‘Forest Fairy’ were large and its outer and inner perianths have conspicuous brown reticulate veins on yellow claw at the base, and spoon-type parts of outer and inner perianths open horizontally and spread outward.

Abstract:Floral color plays a key role as visual signaling and is therefore of great importance in shaping plant-pollinator interactions. Iris (Iridaceae), a genus comprising over 300 species and named after the Greek goddess of the colorful rainbow, is famous for its dazzling palette of flower colors and patterns, which vary considerably both within and among species. Despite the large variation of flower color in Iris, little is known about the phylogenetic and ecological contexts of floral color. Here, we seek to resolve the evolution of flower color in the genus Iris in a macroevolutionary framework. We used a phylogenetic analysis to reconstruct the ancestral state of flower color and other pollination-related traits (e.g., the presence of nectar and mating system), and also tracked the evolution of color variation. We further explored weather floral trait transitions are better explained by environmental or pollinator-mediated selection. Our study revealed that the most recent common ancestor likely had monomorphic, purple flowers, with a crest and a spot on the fall. The flowers were likely insect-pollinated, nectar-rewarding, and self-compatible. The diversity of floral traits we see in modern irises, likely represents a trade-off between conflicting selection pressures. Whether shifts in these flower traits result from abiotic or biotic selective agents or are maintained by neutral processes without any selection remains an open question. Our analysis serves as a starting point for future work exploring the genetic and physiological mechanisms controlling flower coloration in the most color-diverse genus Iris.

Abstract:Iris pseudacorus is one of the most widespread iris species and possesses complex secondary metabolites. Our study showed that its rhizomes are abundant with phenolic compounds of which 80 % belong to the tannin group. Methanolic extracts from garden cultured iris rhizomes possessed antibacterial activity against human Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis and Gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae pathogens including clinical isolates resistant to commercially available antibiotics. Moreover the extract from rhizome, in concentration 3.125 mg dry weight/mL, containing gallocatechin (1), effectively combats S. aureus biofilm. The same rhizome extract acts against human cancer cell lines, especially against estrogen positive MCF-7 breast cancer cell line (IC50 = 11.75 μg/mL). In vitro culture of excised, anatomical roots of I. pseudacorus excreted three antistaphylococcal compounds into the plant medium, detected by using TLC-overlayer bioautography. By the use of HPLC-DAD-ESIMS system 2 active compounds were identified as 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,3'-dimethoxy-isoflavone (7) and unknown dimethoxy-dihydroxy-isoflavone (9). I. pseudacorus as a non-edible plant might be considered to be new, easy accessible, non-wood source of biologically active polyphenolics.

Abstract:The genus Iris from the Iridaceae family consists of more than 262 recognized species. It is an ornamental and medicinal plant widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Iris species convey a long history as valuable traditional drugs with a wide variety of applications in various cultures, having been recorded since medieval times. Currently, Iris spp. still find application in numerous fields, including cosmetics, pharmaceutics and the food industry. Moreover, many of their empirical uses have been validated by in vitro and in vivo studies, showing that Iris spp. exhibit potent antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective and anti-microbial properties. Phytochemicals investigations have revealed that the plant extracts are rich in phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids and phenolic acids. As such, they constitute a promising lead for seeking new drugs with high susceptibilities towards various health issues, particularly oxidative-stress-related diseases such as cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, etc. Herein, we present a literature review of the genus Iris intending to determine the plant’s chemical profile and establish a coherent overview of the biological applications of the plant extracts with reference to their traditional uses.
Modelling the risk of coastal habitat invasion by the aquatic plant Iris pseudacorus to inform monitoring and management efforts

Abstract:Effective management of invasive species often relies upon early detection and rapid implementation of management actions. Unfortunately, early detection can be hampered in coastal regions where sites may be challenging to access and survey or resources are limited. Conventionally considered a freshwater plant with a near-global invaded range, yellow flag iris ( Iris pseudacorus ) is sufficiently tolerant of salinity to disperse through seawater and successfully invade coastal habitats. Clarifying the characteristics that influence coastal habitat suitability for I. pseudacorus and identifying locations at risk of invasion is critical for monitoring and control efforts. We developed a Maxent species distribution model to inform the risk of coastal invasion by I. pseudacorus in southern British Columbia (Canada). Among the variables assessed, precipitation during the driest quarter was the most important contributor in predicting I. pseudacorus' s coastal habitat suitability (40.6% variable contribution [VC]). Urban areas (24.9% VC), south-facing aspects (6.2% VC) and locations at elevations (7.9% VC) at or above the mean high tide extent were also considered suitable for establishment. Though proximity to perennial freshwater sources (7% VC) was also predicted to provide suitable habitat, close distance to these features was not found to be essential. Regionally, invasion hotspots were predicted in coastal habitats around Tofino/Ucluelet (western Vancouver Island), the Fraser River delta (metro Vancouver), and among the southern Gulf Islands and southern Vancouver Island (capital region). Land managers can use these variables of interest and geographic locations to inform early detection monitoring efforts that help attenuate the emerging threat of I. pseudacorus in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:This study examined the acclimation to temperature of two globally invasive species Iris pseudacorus and Lythrum salicaria, which share the same habitat type but differ in morphology. Iris pseudacorus has long vertical leaves, allowing light penetration through the canopy, while L. salicaria has stems with small horizontal leaves, creating significant self-shading. We aimed to build a physiological understanding of how these two species respond to different growth temperatures with regard to growth and gas exchange-related traits over the canopy. Growth and gas exchange-related traits in response to low (15 °C) and high (25 °C) growth temperature regimes were compared. Plants were grown in growth chambers, and light response curves were measured with infrared gas analysers after 23-33 days at three leaf positions on each plant, following the vertical light gradient through the canopy. After 37 days of growth, above-ground biomass, photosynthetic pigments and leaf N concentration were determined. The maximum photosynthesis rate was lower in lower leaf positions but did not differ significantly between temperatures. Iris pseudacorus photosynthesis decreased with decreasing leaf position, more so than L. salicaria. This was explained by decreasing N and chlorophyll concentrations towards the leaf base in I. pseudacorus, while pigment concentrations increased towards the lower canopy in L. salicaria. Biomass, shoot height and specific leaf area increased with temperature, more so in I. pseudacorus than in L. salicaria. Light response curves revealed that L. salicaria had a higher degree of shade acclimation than I. pseudacorus, probably due to self-shading in L. salicaria. High temperature decreased C assimilation at the bottom of the canopy in L. salicaria, while C assimilation in I. pseudacorus was less affected by temperature. As vegetative growth and flowering was stimulated by temperature, the invasive potential of these species is predicted to increase under global warming.

Abstract:Non-native aquatic plants can alter the physiochemical condition of habitats and can have negative ecological and economic impacts. Thus, understanding the characteristics of non-native aquatic plant species is important as a foundation for the conservation of biodiversity and environmental management. The yellow flag (Iris pseudacorus) is an emergent aquatic plant native to Africa, northwest Asia, and Europe that has been introduced through the aquarium trade to all continents except Antarctica. This species has recently been brought into China and it has established large and widespread naturalized populations causing serious ecological and environmental problems. Unfortunately, information about the yellow flag in China is very scarce. We summarize the introduction pathways, current distribution, and ecological impacts of the yellow flag through field surveys and a review of the literature. We hope that this study can provide useful information for researchers and wetland managers involved with non-native emergent plants in China and other regions.

Abstract:Introduction: Irises have been medicinally used in Ancient Egyptians, Anatolian, Chinese, British and Irish folk medicine. They are also well-known ornamental plants that have economic value in the perfume industry. The main obvious diagnostic difference between the different species is based on the morphology of the flowers. The flowering cycle is very short as well as the persistence of the fully opened flowers extends for a few days only. Moreover, the climatic conditions significantly causes fluctuation in their blooming time from year to year. This makes the morphological discrimination very difficult. The discrimination of different iris species is of a great importance, as each species is reported to possess different folk medicinal activities. Objectives: Finding genetic and metabolic markers for differentiation between Iris confusa Sealy (Subgen. Limniris Sect. Lophiris), I. pseudacorus L. (Subgen. Limniris Sect. Limniris) and I. germanica L. (Subgen. Iris Sect. Iris) on levels other than traditional taxonomic features. Material and methods: Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses were performed. Results: The highest similarity was found between I. pseudacorus L. and I. germanica L. and the least similarity was between I. confusa Sealy and I. pseudacorus L. The metabolic profiling of the leaves confirmed genetic profiling discriminating I. confusa from the other two species. The primary metabolites of the underground parts showed clear discrimination between the three species. Conclusions: This study represents the sole complete map for distinguishing the three Iris species on genetic and metabolic bases.

Abstract:Wild relatives of cultivars are crucial sources of genetic variation for further enhancement, yet they face potential threats due to contemporary environmental changes. Iris ensata var. spontanea , a wild progenitor of the Japanese iris cultivars ( I. ensata var. ensata ), is extensively cultivated in Japanese gardens, is distributed across mesic meadows and wetlands in Japan and East Asia. This species is currently threatened owing to habitat loss linked to land use alterations. We assessed genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in 32 wild accessions and the 14 principal Edo Group of Japanese iris cultivars, originally bred during the Edo period (1600–1868). In the phylogenetic tree, the cultivars formed a cluster with low inbreeding coefficients, suggesting a singular origin and interbreeding between the genetically distinct accessions. Conversely, wild accessions exhibited greater overall genetic diversity and higher inbreeding coefficients than cultivars, indicating frequent inbreeding within divergent natural populations. Our findings highlight the distinct genetic reservoirs of both wild accessions and Edo cultivars, although the former may face inbreeding challenges. Urgent conservation action is needed to ensure the genetic diversity of wild populations as natural resources.

Abstract:Improving ecological connectivity (EC) within landscapes by establishing corridors and ecological networks has been proposed to counteract the negative effects of habitat fragmentation and climate change on biodiversity. To be functional, ecological networks should be kept free of opportunistic invasive species that can disrupt EC between protected areas and cause biodiversity loss. The present study focused on perennial herbaceous species whose occurrence in the Adriatic-Ionian region has increased in the last two decades, namely common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica), Bohemian knotweed (Reynoutria × bohemica), giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum), giant goldenrod (Solidago gigantea), Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis), and Bermuda buttercup (Oxalis pes-caprae). All species have a high potential to spread in grasslands, abandoned agricultural fields, forest edges, and riparian areas and pose a significant threat to native plant communities and biodiversity. Restoring heavily infested sites is a major challenge because these perennial invaders are very persistent and tend to alter the soil environment in invaded habitats and prevent the recolonization of native plant communities. Therefore, early action should be taken to prevent the spread of these environmental weeds in ecological networks and protected areas with high conservation value.
