Abstract:Piezocatalysis is a promising approach for environmental pollutant removal. Monoclinic dibismuth tetraoxide (m-Bi2O4) was first applied to piezocatalyze organics under ultrasonic vibration. The built-in electric field with ultrasonic stress drives the separation of holes and electrons in m-Bi2O4. Its excellent piezocatalytic activity, reusability and chemical stability make m-Bi2O4 a new candidate of piezocatalysis.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis, as a rising star in catalysis, shows bright application prospects, but also has the issues of low catalytic efficiency, which is mainly derived from rapid charge recombination and insufficient catalytic reactive sites. In order to address the above two challenges, we select a layered perovskite Bi2MoO6 as the piezocatalyst model, and introduce the low-valence B-site cations I5+ and V5+ with similar ionic radius to substitute for Mo6+ in the MoO6 octahedra, which induce the distortion of MoO6 octahedra and introduction of more oxygen va-cancies in Bi2MoO6 simultaneously. The replacement results in strengthened ferroelectric remanent polarization and piezoelectric properties, in which the piezoelectric coefficient of Bi2MoO6 increases to 1.69 and 1.36 times, respectively, when the optimal amounts of I5+ and V5+ is introduced into Bi2MoO6. At the same time, a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies is generated due to the charge compensation effect, which promotes the adsorption and activation of O2 on the surface of Bi2MoO6, and is conducive to the generation of reactive species. Benefiting from these advantages, the piezocatalytic performance for the degradation of various organic pol-lutants and antibiotics has been effectively heightened. This work illustrates the superiority and universality of nonequivalent cation substitution in improving piezocatalysis, and provides a reference for synergistic strategies to enhance piezocatalytic performance.

Abstract:High Curie temperature (TC) xBi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-(1-x)Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (xBNT-(1-x)PZT, BNT-PZT) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The composition-induced morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its influences on structure and electrical performance were investigated. The synthesized BNT-PZT ceramics exhibit rather pure perovskite structure, and densified microstructure morphology with uniform elementals distribution in both grains and grain boundaries. With increasing the content of Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BNT), crystal structure of the BNT-PZT ceramics transform from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase, and dielectric response peaks change from narrow shape to very broad shape but all presenting dielectric frequency dispersion. The diffused and relaxation dielectric behavior can be fitted well by the quadratic law, and the Vogel-Fulcher law fitting provides additional information on the relaxation characteristic. The MPB effects are confirmed further by ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties measurements. High-TC combined with excellent piezoelectric performance can be realized in the BNT-PZT system, which presents promising applications in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related elevated temperatures fields.

Abstract:Piezo-photocatalytic systems have the capacity to degrade environmental contaminants by exploiting mechanical and photonic energy. Herein, we report on a strategy for the modification of bismuth bromide oxide (BiOBr) with a non-noble metal plasma (titanium nitride (TiN)). The synthesized piezo-photocatalytic system demonstrated excellent performance for the degradation of sulfisoxazole (SIZ), where the 2-TiN/BiOBr samples exhibited a high degradation rate of 94.9% in 70 min, with a rate constant that was 4.68 times higher than that of BiOBr. This improved catalytic performance was attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and high electronic conductivity of TiN, which improved the photocatalytic and piezoelectric properties of BiOBr. The hypothesis of an extended piezoelectric field was verified in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work presents a new perspective for improved piezoelectric photocatalytic systems, which have great potential for utilizing solar and mechanical energy for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis has received tremendous interest due to the catalytic effect can be triggered by mechanical vibration. Herein, (1 − x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–xBiFeO3 solid solution piezocatalysts were synthesized by a sol–gel method aim to improve the piezocatalytic activities of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT) and BiFeO3 (BFO). The piezocatalytic efficiencies of all obtained solid solution catalysts were improved compared with pure BNT and BFO for methyl orange (MO) degradation as expected. Among them, 0.5BNT–0.5BFO catalyst exhibited outstanding piezocatalytic activity and reusability, the reaction rate constant (0.0615 min−1) was about 5.2 and 3.2 times larger than that of BNT and BFO. Trapping experiments demonstrated that O2 − and OH were the main species for MO degradation. Electrochemical measurements indicated that 0.5BNT–0.5BFO exhibited more efficient charge separation efficiency than that of BNT and BFO, which accounts for its efficient catalytic performance. A possible piezocatalytic reaction mechanism was proposed based on band structure and reactive oxygen species (ROS) detection. This work provides a new perspective for designing highly efficient piezocatalysts.

Abstract:Hierarchical structure Bi2MoxW1-xO6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) solid solutions with high surface area are prepared by hydrothermal method without employing any surfactant. All the as-prepared products are hierarchical microspheres self-assembled by nanosheets. The piezocatalytic performance of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 solid solutions are investigated by the degradation of RhB under ultrasonic vibration. The experimental results show that the x value of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 has great influence on the piezocatalytic efficiency. Among which, the Bi2Mo0.4W0.6O6 presents a high value of the rate constant k of 0.119 min-1 by degrading 97.5% of RhB dye solution in 30 min. It is about 43.4% higher than that of pure Bi2WO6 sample, for which k is 0.083 min-1. Radical trapping test indicates that holes (h+) are the dominating active species in the degradation process. The improved piezocatalytic performance for Bi2Mo0.4W0.6O6 sample ascribes to the larger piezoelectric potential generated under a strained state, which facilitates the transfer of charge carriers and accelerate the piezocatalytic process. Our work presents a new design strategy of piezocatalysts for remediation of water pollution.

Abstract:Ultrasonic vibration and light irradiation can be used together to slow down the rapid recombination of light-induced charges during the catalytic process. One way to enhance the catalytic performance is by introducing different elements into the structure. In this study, pure bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) and manganese (Mn)-doped bismuth ferrite (BFMO) nanomaterials were successfully synthesized by electrostatic spinning. These materials were then tested for their ability to degrade rhodamine B (RhB). The best-performing material was BiFe0.85Mn0.15O3, which achieved almost complete removal of RhB within 100minutes. The degradation rate of this material was 3.3 times higher than that of pristine BiFeO3. This enhanced catalytic activity can be attributed to the wider range of light absorption and the synergistic enhancement of the piezoelectric response, which promotes the movement of free carriers. In addition, the synthesized catalysts have good stability and reusability, with little metal leaching after multiple uses. Free radical scavenging experiments tests showed that ·OH and holes are the main active species in the catalytic process. This work paves a new approach for creating highly efficient piezoelectric catalysts and expands the application of BiFeO3-based materials for wastewater purification.
Polar Layered Bismuth‐Rich Oxyhalide Piezoelectrics Bi4O5X2 (xbr, I): Efficient Piezocatalytic Pure Water Splitting and Interlayer Anion‐Dependent Activity

Abstract:Piezocatalytic pure water splitting for H-2 evolution carries the virtues of efficacious utilization of mechanical energy, easy operation, and high value-added products, while lacking desirable piezoelectrics for high chemical energy production. Here, two polar layered bismuth-rich oxyhalides Bi4O5X2 (X(sic)Br, I) thin nanosheets (approximate to 4 nm) are first exploited as efficient piezocatalysts to be capable of dissociating pure water. The unique asymmetrical layered structures of Bi4O5X2 (X(sic)Br, I) composed of the interleaved [Bi4O5](2+) layer and double X- ions slabs along the [1 0 1_] orientation cause large intrinsic dipole moment, excellent piezoelectricity and easy deformation. Without any cocatalyst and sacrificial agent, Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2 thin nanosheets display remarkable piezocatalytic H-2 production rate of 1149.0 and 764.5 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), respectively, standing among the best piezocatalysts, accompanied by H2O2 and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) as oxidative products. The smaller radius and higher electronegativity of interleaved Br than I cause a more strongly polar crystal structure in Bi4O5Br2, contributing to the higher piezocatalytic activity compared to Bi4O5I2. This study broadens the scope of piezoelectric materials applied to sustainable energy catalysis by efficiently converting mechanical energy and illustrates the importance of crystal configuration and composition in fabricating efficient piezocatalytic systems.

Abstract:High-performance piezoelectric materials are the core elements for the fabrication piezoelectric transducers and actuators. In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for piezoelectric materials with both high operational temperature and large piezoelectricity. However, the conventional approach of soft doping to enhance the piezoelectric response often results in a reduction in Curie temperature. To address this issue, we incorporated Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O-3 with a large spontaneous polarization (P-s similar to 100 mu C/cm(2)) and high Curie temperature (T-c similar to 1380 degrees C) into BiScO3-PbTiO3 ceramics to improve the piezoelectric response while maintaining high T-c. The newly developed 0.08Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O-3-0.335BiScO(3)-0.585PbTiO(3) ceramic exhibits impressive properties including a high d(33) value of 585 pC/N (increased by similar to 33 % compared to the 0.36BiScO(3)-0.64PbTiO(3) ceramics), an electromechanical coupling coefficient k(33) of 0.75, a dielectric constant epsilon ' of 2380, a relatively high T-c of 421 degrees C. These remarkable improvements hold great promise for advancing high-temperature piezoelectric devices.

Abstract:Efficient catalytic conversion can be achieved by electro-mechanical coupling and solar energy-induced photogenerated carriers. In this work, an advanced semimetal Bi decorated Bi4Ti3O12 (Bi/BTO) heterojunction catalyst was constructed through in-situ reduction without organic solvent. The piezo-photocatalytic removal toward MB of Bi/BTO catalyst reaches 87.2% within 70 min, and the rate constant is 2.23 and 1.80 times higher than that of piezocatalysis and photocatalysis, respectively. The enhanced performance is attributed to not only surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi nanoparticles that enhances light absorption and accelerates charge separation, but also the piezoelectric effect of Bi4Ti3O12 which strengthens internal electric fields. Moreover, the metal titanium template can be recycled to synthesize Bi/BTO catalyst, thus favouring commercial-scale application. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to design efficient catalyst to utilize natural solar and mechanical energy.
Structural origin for the high piezoelectric performance of (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-BaTiO3-BiAlO3 lead-free ceramics

Abstract:Achieving high piezoelectric performance in the representative lead-free materials of Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-BaTiO3 (BNT-BT) is of great interest. However, it remains a challenge in these materials, as they feature structural phases with strong octahedral tilting at morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Herein, we obtain good piezoelectric performance with relatively large d 33 value (219 pC/N), small coercive field (1.5 kV/mm), and good thermal stability in the (1-x)(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-x(0.9BaTiO3-0.1BiAlO3) ternary system by crystal structure design. It is found that the incorporation of BiAlO3 with large tolerance factor can suppress the octahedral tilting and reduce the structural distortion of R3c and P4bm at MPB, and thus allows the electric field induced an extensive and reversible phase transformation. By using in-situ electric field synchrotron X-ray diffraction, it is revealed that the crystal lattice of the R3c phase with a smaller structural distortion responds more flexible to the electric field than that of the P4bm phase with a larger structural distortion. The piezoelectric strain analysis through profiles fitting indicates that the enhanced piezoelectric response attributed to both the activated domain switching and enhanced lattice strain benefited from the subtle phase structure. These findings provide further insights into the dynamic structural response of BNT-based materials, and will be helpful in designing high-performance piezoelectric materials beyond the MPB.

Interfacial Engineering of Bi2MoO6-BaTiO3 Type-I Heterojunction Promotes Cocatalyst-Free Piezocatalytic H2 Production

Abstract:Single component semiconductor materials with piezoelectric response can promote the activation of hydrogen ions (H+) and the generation of hydrogen (H2) under the action of mechanical force, but the high recombination rate of carriers is the major obstacle to strengthen piezocatalytic efficiency. Here, a groundbreaking Bi2MoO6- BaTiO3 (BMO-BTO) Type-I heterojunction piezocatalyst is successfully fabricated through a solvothermal strat-egy, and applied for cocatalysts-free piezocatalytic H2 production reaction. Under ultrasonic vibration, the H2 production rate of BMO-0.1BTO heterojunction can reach up to nearly 152.57 mu mol/g/h, which is approximately 9.33 and 4.47 times with respect to that of pristine BMO (16.36 mu mol/g/h) and BTO (34.16 mu mol/g/h) alone, respectively. Furthermore, BMO is also combined with other commonly used piezocatalysts to construct heter-ojunctions, and analogous marvelous piezocatalytic H2 production performance was attained. The enhanced piezocatalytic H2 production performance can be credited to the established built-in electric field (BIEF) in heterojunction extraordinarily suppressed the recombination rates of piezocarriers, rather than an increase in piezoelectricity, which is emphatically verified through a series of physics and chemical characterizations. This study presents an innovative paradigm for fabricating BMO-based heterojunction piezocatalyst to efficiently convert mechanical energy into chemical energy.
Synthesis of novel flower-like Bi4Ti3O12/BiOCl heterojunctions with excellent piezoelectric photocatalytic performance

Abstract:Photocatalysis technology can not only degrade pollutants by renewable solar energy, but also has enormous promise for resolving environmental issues. The piezoelectric field inside the piezoelectric material can be used as the driving force of charge separation to improve the photocatalytic activity. In order to study the catalytic effect of piezoelectric materials on photocatalysis, a flower-like Bi4Ti3O12/BiOCl (BTO/BOC) composite catalyst is prepared in this paper. The photogenerated carrier separation efficiency is characterized by electrochemical, PL and ESR tests. BOC's built-in electric field helps to facilitate the separation of photogenerated carrier, reducing the recombination rate and improving photocatalytic efficiency. The piezoelectric effect caused by ultrasonic vibration is coupled with the photocatalysis, which realizes the high efficiency co-catalysis of BTO/BOC piezoelectric photocatalyst. The polarized BTO/BOC heterojunction catalysts achieved a very high degradation efficiency (99.15 %) under piezo-photocatalysis. The degradation rates (k = 0.7494 min−1) are 1.74 and 8.19 times higher than photocatalysis (k = 0.4304 min−1) and piezoelectric catalysis (k = 0.0915 min−1), respectively. The investigation of the piezoelectric effect and photocatalysis's synergistic relationship is very significant.

Abstract:Background Bismuth molybdate (Bi2MoO6) has been demonstrated as an effective visible-light-driven photocatalyst for purification of pollutants in environment. However, its photocatalytic performance is greatly limited for practical usage due to the drastic recombination of photo-generated charges. Methods Herein, we employed an ultrasound treatment to piezoelectrically polarize the synthesized ferroelectric Bi2MoO6 catalyst. Through studying the current response of catalyst under different stimulations, the effect of quenching active species, the production of radicals, and the intermediate products in the photopiezocatalytic process, a plausible photopiezocatalytic mechanism was proposed. Significant findings The built-in piezoelectric field acts as a driving force to propel photo-induced e− and h+ to migrate toward opposite surfaces of Bi2MoO6, therefore suppressing their recombination. The photopiezocatalytic activity of Bi2MoO6 for elimination of Rhodamine B (RhB) is 4.19 times and 2.04 times of its photocatalysis and piezocatalysis. Meanwhile, the photopiezocatalysis of Bi2MoO6 also has a high stability and durability, as well as excellent performance for decomposing other pollutants, including dyes and 2,4-dichlorophenol. This investigation indicates that Bi2MoO6 is a promising photopiezocatalyst for efficient elimination of organic pollutants in environment.

Abstract:In this work, Na0.5Bi4.5Ti3.94‐xMn0.06NbxO15+y Bismuth‐layered ferroelectric ceramics were prepared by a solid‐state reaction method. The effect of Nb5+ content on crystal morphology, electrical properties and piezoelectric performance were systematically investigated. The results show that the introduction of Nb5+ into Na0.5Bi4.5Ti3.94‐xMn0.06NbxO15+y ceramics to replace the Ti4+ increases the ratio of b/a lattice parameter, leading to the TiO6 octahedral distortion and the structural transformation tendency from orthorhombic to tetragonal phase, which facilitates dipole movements of Na0.5Bi4.5Ti3.94‐xMn0.06NbxO15+y ceramics. Therefore, the ferroelectric properties of Na0.5Bi4.5Ti3.94‐xMn0.06NbxO15+y ceramics are improved and an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient of 30 pC/N combining great temperature stability with d33 value higher than 25 pC/N in the temperature range of 25∼450°C have been realized in Na0.5Bi4.5Ti3.94‐xMn0.06NbxO15+y ceramics with x = 0.08 mol. Our work provides a good model for designing lead‐free ultrahigh Curie temperature piezoelectric devices that can be practically applied in extremely harsh environments. Impact of Dual Functionalities of Mo‐Doped BiFeO3 Decorated with Bi4MoO9 Heteroatoms for Piezo‐Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Piezocatalysts have shown great promise for advanced and green hydrogen generation. However, their application is typically limited owing to the rapid charge recombination and sluggish charge transfer rate of piezo‐induced charge carriers. The present work aims to address the preceding limitations by controlled synthesis of a representative piezocatalytic material, BiFeO3 doped with Mo atoms and decorated with Bi4MoO9 (BMO) heteroatoms using a sol‐gel method. The work revealed that the substitutional doping of Mo on BFO (BFMO) induced a shallow energy level near the conduction band that acted as trapping state to a) suppress charge recombination, b) enhance charge mobility transporting to the surface, c) modulate band alignment, and d) lower the energy barrier for surface reaction. Also, the BFMO/BMO heterostructures induced electrical band bending that led to the formation of an electric‐potential gradient, hence promoting charge carrier separation and transfer. The nanostructures with 0.5 mol % Mo (Mo‐5) demonstrated 4‐times faster piezocatalytic dye degradation rate (k = 0.032 min‐1) compared to pristine BFO (0.009 min‐1). Further, the Mo‐5 exhibited a 45% higher piezocatalytic H2 production rate compared to pristine BFO with cocatalyst‐free. Further, the work demonstrates the lack of synergy between piezocatalytic and photocatalytic processes due to Auger recombination effects.

Abstract:Exploration for multiresponsive catalytic materials and synthesis of highly active exposing crystal facets are challenging subjects for catalysis research. In this work, well-defined Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) nanosheets (BON-S) with a dominantly exposed {001} active facet were synthesized by a sodium-dodecylbenzenesulfonate-assisted (SDBS-assisted) soft-chemical route. BON-S presents far superior photocatalytic activity compared to bulk materials as well as a universal performance for degradation of contaminants and antibiotics under UV light. The profoundly enhanced photocatalytic activity basically stems from the largely shortened diffusion pathway of photogenerated electrons (e(-)) and holes (h(+)), favoring their migration from bulk to the surface of the catalyst under the internal electric field between [Bi2O2(OH)](+) and NO3- layers along the [001] direction. The photocatalytic active species production rates of BON-S are determined to be 3.14 mu mol L-1 min(-1) for superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) and 0.03 mu mol L-1 min(-1) for hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot). BON-S also shows an enhanced visible-light-responsive dye-sensitization degradation activity with Rhodamine B (RhB) as a sensitized medium to provide photoinduced e(-). Moreover, for the first time we unearth that Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) demonstrates an ultrasonic-assisted piezoelectric-catalytic performance for decomposition of methyl orange, bisphenol A, and tetracycline hydrochloride, and (OH)-O-center dot dominates the piezoelectric-catalytic process with an evolution rate of 7.13 mu mol L-1 h(-1), which far exceeds the photocatalytically induced one. This study may cast new inspiration on developing a new microstructure-design strategy for high photocatalytic/dye-sensitization performance, and furnishes a novel piezoelectric-catalytic material for environmental applications.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis and piezo-photocatalysis have recently emerged as promising strategies to address energy and environmental issues through harvesting mechanical energy. Herein, we report that electrical conductivity, rather than piezoelectric coefficient, is more decisive in determining piezocatalytic and piezopotential enhanced photocatalytic activities. The high electrical conductivity of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 leads to superior piezo-photocatalytic catalytic activity compared to other reported piezocatalysts for water splitting (H-2 production of 158 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)), Cr(VI) reduction (first-order rate constant of 0.045 min(-1)), and degradation of organic pollutants (first-order rate constant of 0.061 min(-1) for RhB) by introducing sunlight and ultrasonic mechanical vibration with a frequency of 20-80 kHz. Furthermore, the mechanical power, vibration frequency, and particle size of the material are important factors to optimize the piezocatalytic and piezo-photocatalytic performance. This work provides a useful guide to design new piezocatalytic or piezo-photocatalytic materials by synergistically considering the electrical conductivity and piezoelectric coefficient.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis offers an encouraging alternative for the sustainable, on-demand, and decentralized production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), underscoring the importance of enhancing piezocatalytic efficiency. Enhancing piezocatalysts through defect engineering has shown considerable potential in boosting H2O2 production efficiency. However, the impact of oxygen vacancies on piezocatalytic activity remains unclear. Herein, we used a chemical probe method to quantify negative charges (q-) and superoxide radicals (O2-) to explore the relation between the oxygen vacancy concentration and piezocatalytic performance of bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12) based catalysts. Results indicate that piezocatalytic H2O2 production in pure water demonstrates a volcanic trend with increasing oxygen vacancy concentration. This trend is attributed to the dual role of oxygen vacancies, which reduce the piezoelectric property of the piezocatalyst while simultaneously increasing the concentration of O2-, which is crucial for H2O2 formation through the O2 reduction pathway. This study provides insights into the interplay between oxygen vacancies, piezoelectric properties, and piezocatalytic activity, offering valuable guidance for the design of piezocatalysts for sustainable H2O2 production.
