Abstract:A simple approach to generate two bands of tunable microwave signal is proposed and demonstrated. In this scheme, two single-mode fibers with optimized Brillouin frequency shift spacing have been chosen as the scattering medium in two cascaded ring cavities. Two bands of tunable microwave signal from 390 to 453 MHz and 10.863 to 11.076 GHz can be obtained through adjusting the temperature of the fiber and the pump wavelength. The tunable frequency range can be further expanded by using a temperature controller with a wider adjustment range. The generated microwave signal exhibits high stability on frequency.

Abstract:A novel configuration of compound-cavity multi-wavelength Brillouin erbium fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With an incident optical carrier power of 8 dBm, at least 14 lasing lines are obtained with a wavelength spacing of ∼0.08 nm. Stability and power uniformity of the multi-wave-length lasing are ensured by the flat hybrid gain of Brillouin and erbium, the compound-cavity structure, and the four-wave mixing suppression using a long (10 km) single-mode fiber. A stable and frequency-switchable microwave can be achieved by incorporating a fiber Bragg grating filter to select the desired n th-order Stokes wave and beating it with the optical carrier at a photodetector. In our experiment, the 1st-4th-order Stokes waves are filtered respectively and hence a high-quality microwave with a switchable frequency from ∼10 to ∼40 GHz and a tuning step of ∼10 GHz is achieved. The signal-to-noise ratio is measured to be >25 dB.

Abstract:A novel system configuration for optical generation of microwave/millimeter-wave (mm-wave), which is realized through Brillouin-Erbium fiber laser (BEFL), is investigated. The microwave/mm-wave is generated by the mixing of the nth-order Stokes wave and the pump wave on the high-speed photodetector. The nth-order Stokes wave is generated in the BEFL and filtered out by fiber Bragg grating. Abstract:An all-optical microwave generation using a multi-wavelength photonic crystal fiber Brillouin laser is presented. A highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber with the length of 25m is used as Brillouin gain medium. A Fabry-Perot cavity with two fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors are designed in order to enhance the Brillouin conversion efficiency. The fiber Bragg gratings can be used to selectively excite the jth-order Stokes' wave and suppress other order Stokes' waves. The mechanism for microwave/millimeter-wave generation is theoretically analyzed. In the experiment, both 9.788 GHz and 19.579 GHz microwave signals are achieved through mixing the pump wave with the first-order and the second-order Stokes' waves.

Abstract:A simple approach to generate two bands of higher frequency tunable microwave signal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this scheme, the single frequency Brillouin ring laser with a temperature controller is used. Two bands of tunable microwave signal from 10.77 to 11.098GHz and 21.525 to 22.114GHz can be obtained through adjusting the temperature of the fiber, pump wavelength and loss of the variable optical attenuator (VOA). Experimental results show that the generated microwave signal exhibits high stability on frequency. The tunable frequency range can be further expanded by using a temperature controller with a wider adjustment range.

Abstract:Microwave signal generation and processing such as frequency conversion are proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in single-mode fibers (SMFs). A simple scheme to generate microwave/millimeter-wave sources is realized by utilizing the optical heterodyne technique between an optical carrier and its Stokes light. Stable microwave sources with the frequencies of about 10.56 and 21.71 GHz are experimentally realized using the first- and second-order SBS frequency shifts based on standard SMFs. A microwave frequency up/down conversion method is presented without premodulation for bi-direction radio-over-fiber systems by using fiber SBS. The microwave signal of 1.5 GHz is experimentally up-converted to 9.06 and 12.06 GHz, and the microwave signal of 9 GHz is down-converted to 1.56 GHz, respectively.

Abstract:Microwave photonic filters (MPF) are among the most crucial components required for meeting the demands of high-speed and high-frequency signal processing of modern telecommunication systems. For the first time, here, we propose an MPF based on a double wavelength spacing Brillouin-Raman fiber laser (BRFL) to realize a versatile bandpass filter. The proposed setup generated 100 optical taps output with ~ 20 GHz spacings as the light source of the MPF. A dispersive medium of 5 km long single mode fiber and 3.46 km long dispersion compensating fiber were used to characterize the effect of the time delay on the central frequency of the MPF passband. A reconfigurable 3-dB bandwidth from 150 MHz to 1.12 GHz centered around 10.3 GHz is achievable by varying the BRFL optical channel numbers using 10 to 100 optical taps with 20 GHz spacing. The 3-dB bandwidth and Q-factor of the proposed MPF were investigated experimentally and found to be in good agreement with simulation, demonstrating the potential of the BRFL as a laser source for the realization of flexible and versatile radio frequency transversal filters with potentially reduced cost and complexity.

Abstract:Ultralow-noise microwaves are essential in a wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as metrology, radars, and communications. Here, we propose and demonstrate a scheme for generating an ultralow-noise microwave signal using a Brillouin optical frequency comb (OFC), which is based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering in combination with a frequency-shifted optical injection locking mechanism. The generated two intra-cavity Brillouin lasers are used as the intra-cavity pump for the eventual formation of the OFC and thus the microwave signal via the cascaded four-wave mixing process. Exploiting the cascaded narrowing effect in the Brillouin cavity assisted by the frequency-shifted optical injection locking, the proposed microwave signal source exhibits ultralow phase noise. Experimental results show that the phase noise of the microwave signal is equivalent to below −115 dBc/Hz for a 200-GHz carrier at 10 kHz offset. The system can work in stable operation without the need for any active feedback loop.

Abstract:Abstract Narrowband microwave generation with tuneable frequency is demonstrated by illuminating a photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS) with a burst-mode fibre laser. The whole system is composed of a high-power linearly polarized burst-mode pulsed fibre laser and a linear-state PCSS. To obtain a high-performance microwave signal, a desired envelope of burst is necessary and a pulse pre-compensation technique is adopted to avoid envelope distortion induced by the gain-saturation effect. Resulting from the technique, homogenous peak power distribution in each burst is ensured. The maximum energy of the laser burst pulse reaches 200 μJ with a burst duration of 100 ns at the average power of 10 W, corresponding to a peak power of 4 kW. When the PCSS is illuminated by the burst-mode fibre laser, narrowband microwave generation with tuneable frequency (0.80–1.12 GHz) is obtained with a power up to 300 W. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first demonstration of frequency-tuneable narrowband microwave generation based on a fibre laser. The high-power burst-mode fibre laser reported here has great potential for generating high-power arbitrary microwave signals for a great deal of applicable demands such as smart adaptive radar and intelligent high-power microwave systems.

Abstract:A novel approach to generating 40 GHz narrow linewidth frequency-switched microwave signals is proposed and demonstrated. In this scheme, a single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) double-Brillouin-frequency spaced Brillouin fiber laser with dual-ring configuration and unpumped erbium-doped fiber (EDF) is used to generate dual-wavelength lasers, and a fiber Bragg grating is used to select the laser for different Brillouin frequency spacings. Dual-ring configuration and unpumped EDF are designed to select the mode for the SLM laser. Dual-wavelength lasers are inserted into a photodetector, and microwave signals at 10.66, 21.39, 32.12, or 42.85 GHz can be obtained. The linewidth of the generated microwave signals is less than 69 kHz. The frequency drift at each frequency is less than 0.83 MHz. The frequency noise and linewidth of Stokes signals are measured, and the linewidth broadening effect of microwave signals is analyzed.

Abstract:A photonic approach to generating chirped microwave signal with high time-bandwidth product (TBWP) is proposed. The scheme utilizes the linear frequency-to-time mapping of a spectrally-shaped optical pulse propagating through a dispersive element. A mode-locked laser for generating short optical pulses and a programmable optical filter (POF) to shape the spectrum of the pulses are employed. Experiment results show that the chirped signal with a TBWP and compression ratio both in excess of 60 is achieved. We also estimate theoretically the maximum TBWP that can be achieved over 300 under the constraint of the finite frequency resolution of the applied POF. The effect of higher order dispersion on the generated RF pulses and the TBWP is also investigated.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:Aimed at the problem of narrow tunability and low frequency microwave signal generated by the optical method,a novel approach to stabilizing the tunable photonic microwave generated by the multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser is proposed and is experimentally demonstrated.A singlelongitudinal-mode Brillouin fiber laser is designed,and by using the laser,a multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser with more than eleven orders of Stokes wave is observed.The wavelength spacing of the adjacent Stokes wave is 0.085 nm.If the Brillouin pump power is increased,the number of Stokes wave output can be further increased.The tunable microwave signals of 10.8 and 21.6 GHz are obtained by heterodyning the Rayleigh wave and Stokes wave of the multiwavelength Brillouin fiber laser.In the experiment,by tuning the pump wavelength and temperature of the gain fiber,microwave signals at different frequencies are generated.The tunable frequency range can be further expanded by using a temperature controller with a wider adjustment range,and the generated microwave signal exhibits high stability on frequency.

Abstract:We demonstrated that ultrabroadband noise-like pulses (NLPs) spanning from below 1600 nm to beyond 2300 nm can be generated in Tm-doped fiber lasers enabled by an optical microfiber. Meanwhile, pronounced red light around 660 nm was also observed, which was attributed to the intracavity third harmonic generation (THG) of ultrashort pulses by harnessing the intermodal phase matching in the optical microfiber. As far as we know, it is the first time to simultaneously observe the ultrabroadband NLPs and the intracavity THG in ultrafast fiber lasers, and it is anticipated that these ultrabroadband NLPs can be adopted as a compact broadband source for optical spectroscopy around 2 µm and a wonderful potential seed for supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared. Moreover, the THG of the intracavity high peak power NLPs in ultrafast fiber lasers provides a new kind of fiber-format visible light source.

Abstract:The terahertz (THz) frequency range, spanning from 0.1 to 10.0 THz, is a field ripe for innovation with vast, developing potential in areas like wireless communication and molecular spectroscopy. Our work introduces a dual-wavelength laser design that utilizes stimulated Brillouin scattering in an optical fibre cavity to effectively generate two highly coherent optical Stokes waves with inherently mitigated differential phase noise. To guarantee robust operation, the Stokes waves are optically injected into their respective pump lasers, which also serves to greatly improve the resulting coherence. The frequency difference between the two wavelengths is converted into THz waves through a uni-travelling-carrier photodiode. This innovative design facilitates the generation of THz waves with phase noise levels of less than –100 dBc Hz –1 , translating to timing noise below 10 as Hz –1/2 at 10 kHz Fourier frequency, over a carrier frequency range from 300 GHz to 3 THz. This development in phase noise reduction establishes a new benchmark in the spectral purity of tunable THz sources. Such advances are pivotal for applications to move beyond oscillator constraints.

Abstract:A scheme to perform ultra-narrow filter bandwidth and high frequency selectivity microwave photonic filter (MPF) with wide tuning range is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The ultra-narrow bandwidth of the MPF is implemented by a Brillouin laser resonator, which is composed of a cascaded ring Fabry–Pérot (CR-FP) resonator formed by a main cavity with a cavity length of 100 m and a secondary cavity with a cavity length of 10 m. A Brillouin laser resonator is formed by the main cavity to obtain an extremely narrow comb-shaped Brillouin gain spectrum. The Vernier effect of the double ring cavity can effectively suppress the side modes, thereby realizing the narrow linewidth Brillouin laser filtering. Besides, two identical tunable lasers provide the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pump light and optical carrier signal for this device respectively. After the interaction between the Brillouin gain spectrum and the optical modulation signal, the filter passband can be stably tuned by simply changing the wavelength of SBS pump light. The experimental results show that the microwave photonic filter can be stably tuned in the frequency range of 0–20 GHz, the out-of-band rejection ratio is about 20 dB, and the minimum 3 dB bandwidth is about 114 Hz.
