Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:A novel concept of individually switchable and widely tunable erbium-doped multiwavelength fiber laser (MWFL) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key component of the laser is a channel transmissivity individually variable comb filter composed of two cascaded different-length long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs), named cascaded mismatching LPFGs. When inserted into the laser cavity, this polarization-dependent comb filter functions as the wavelength selector and switching filter simultaneously. By properly adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs) in the laser cavity and in the high birefringence Sagnac loop mirror (HiBi-SLM), eleven individually switchable wavelengths with different flexible lasing states, including successively tunable adjacent single-, dual- and triple-wavelength outputs, nonadjacent dual- and triple-wavelength outputs, as well as quadruple- and quintuple-wavelength outputs, have been achieved. This MWFL may be useful in optical fiber sensing or other fields desiring very flexible optical source.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a wide-spectrum multi-wavelength fiber laser generated by Brillouin-comb assisted four-wave mixing (FWM). The mechanism of the laser is based on the combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering in cavity and multiple FWM process outside cavity. The experiment results demonstrate that Brillouin-comb assisting is an effective method to improve the FWM process and increase the line number. More than 110 lines are achieved in 10 nm spectral range with the wavelength spacing of similar to 0.09 nm. The multi-wavelength fiber laser exhibits good stability on both the operating wavelengths and output power. The tunability of this multi-wavelength fiber laser is improved significantly by inserting a tunable filter in the cavity. The total line number is kept more than 110 in the whole tunable range of 30 nm from 1540 to 1570 nm.

Abstract:As an ideal miniaturized light source, wavelength-tunable nanolasers capable of emitting a wide spectrum stimulate intense interests for on-chip optoelectronics, optical communications, and spectroscopy. However, realization of such devices remains a major challenge because of extreme difficulties in achieving continuously reversibly tunable gain media and high quality (Q)-factor resonators on the nanoscale simultaneously. Here, exploiting single bandgap-graded CdSSe NWs and a Fabry-Pérot/whispering-gallery-mode (FP-WGM) coupling cavity, a free-standing fiber-integrated reversibly wavelength-tunable nanolaser covering a 42-nm wide spectrum at room temperature with high stability and reproducibility is demonstrated. In addition, a 1.13-nm tuning spectral resolution is realized. The substrate-free device design enables integration in optical fiber communications and information. With reversible and wide, continuous tunability of emission color and precise control per step, our work demonstrates a general approach to nanocavity coupling affording high Q-factors, enabling an ideal miniaturized module for a broad range of applications in optics and optoelectronics, with optical fiber integration.

Abstract:A novel configuration of compound-cavity multi-wavelength Brillouin erbium fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With an incident optical carrier power of 8 dBm, at least 14 lasing lines are obtained with a wavelength spacing of ∼0.08 nm. Stability and power uniformity of the multi-wave-length lasing are ensured by the flat hybrid gain of Brillouin and erbium, the compound-cavity structure, and the four-wave mixing suppression using a long (10 km) single-mode fiber. A stable and frequency-switchable microwave can be achieved by incorporating a fiber Bragg grating filter to select the desired n th-order Stokes wave and beating it with the optical carrier at a photodetector. In our experiment, the 1st-4th-order Stokes waves are filtered respectively and hence a high-quality microwave with a switchable frequency from ∼10 to ∼40 GHz and a tuning step of ∼10 GHz is achieved. The signal-to-noise ratio is measured to be >25 dB.

Abstract:An all-optical microwave generation using a multi-wavelength photonic crystal fiber Brillouin laser is presented. A highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber with the length of 25m is used as Brillouin gain medium. A Fabry-Perot cavity with two fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors are designed in order to enhance the Brillouin conversion efficiency. The fiber Bragg gratings can be used to selectively excite the jth-order Stokes' wave and suppress other order Stokes' waves. The mechanism for microwave/millimeter-wave generation is theoretically analyzed. In the experiment, both 9.788 GHz and 19.579 GHz microwave signals are achieved through mixing the pump wave with the first-order and the second-order Stokes' waves.

Abstract:A novel and simple two-frequency Brillouin fiber laser is presented. It is based on a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity with fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors. The model of stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber grating-based Fabry-Perot resonator is investigated. The laser allows conversion efficiency of close to 100% and suppresses the higher-order Stokes waves. The theoretical prediction is presented and the experimental demonstration is realized.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband tunable cascaded Raman random fiber laser pumped by a tunable (1020-1080 nm) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is investigated. By continuously adjusting the pump laser wavelength, the Raman random laser tunes accordingly due to the Raman gain competition. By increasing the pump power, up to the 5th order Raman random laser is achieved. As a result, 300 nm of continuous wavelength tuning from 1070 to 1370 nm is achieved by adjusting the pump wavelength and power altogether. The highest output power is 1.8 W at 1360 nm with an optical efficiency of 15% from 1080 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest wavelength tuning range reported for a random fiber laser so far. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser based on a dual-ring structure to take advantage of the forward and backward Brillouin gain simultaneously with an injected tunable scanning lasing. We used two erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for the amplification of the seed lasing and the operated Brillouin laser. The cascaded stimulated Brillouin effect in the section of dispersion-shifted fiber contributes to the free oscillation suppression in cavity. When the laser operates at the center wavelength of 1565 nm, the output spectra shows the maximum Brillouin lines of more than 95 with a wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm under the maximum pump. Through adjusting of the seed wavelength and the tunable filter in cavity, the output spectra can be shifted from 1540 to 1570 nm. This fiber laser will find potential applications in optical measurement and sensing because of its large line number, stability, tunability and fixed wavelength spacing.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (MEDFL) with simple line structure is experimentally demonstrated by using a Sagnac interferometer as a comb filter. It is shown that the multi-wavelength lasing is quite stable at room temperature due to the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect among different laser channels in the dispersion-shifted fiber cooperated in the laser cavity.

Abstract:Low-cost tunable lasers are key enablers for next-generation dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) based access and metro networks. At present, tunable lasers are mostly deployed in long-haul optical transmission systems due to their high cost resulting from fabrication and operation complexity for structures such as sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SGDBR) [1,2]. For wide deployment of the WDM technology in metro, access, and data center networks, the cost reduction of tunable lasers has become a key issue. Recently, a simple and compact tunable V-cavity laser (VCL) has been proposed and demonstrated [3-4]. By using a specially designed halfwave coupler between two Fabry-Perot lasers, a widely-tunable single-mode laser with high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is achieved without requiring complex gratings. Discrete wavelength tuning up to 50 channels at 100 GHz spacing has been demonstrated experimentally with a simple tuning algorithm [5]. Single-electrode controlled fast wavelength tuning in the order of ~10ns has also been achieved by using a quantum well intermixed tuning section [6].

Abstract:In order to obtain high quality tunable multi-wavelength laser,a novel approach of generating tunable multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.In this scheme,the single-longitudinal-mode Brillouin ring cavity laser is designed and obtained.And then,by using the single frequency laser as signal light,based on Brillouin amplification effect,the multi-wavelength laser with more than 12 wavelengths has been obtained,and the wavelength number can be further increased.The wavelength interval of the laser is about 0.087 nm,and the tunable output of multiwavelength can be realized by adjusting the pump wavelength and power.In 20 min interval,the stability of the multi-wavelength laser is measured,and the experimental results show that the multi-wavelength laser has high stability.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single-longitudinal mode (SLM) narrow linewidth broadband tunable Brillouin random laser, including two segment dispersion compensated fibers (DCFs), in which enough narrowband Brillouin gain provided by a 2-km-length DCF to overcome the cavity loss, and Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) provided by a 1-km-length DCF form a mirrorless open cavity to continuously compress the laser linewidth. Compared to ordinary single mode fibers, DCF has an enhanced stimulated Brillouin scattering gain coefficient and RBS coefficient, which is attributed to its small core diameter structure, making the laser more compact and stable. Stronger random feedback effectively lowers the laser threshold, and enough Brillouin gain for multiple amplifications in random mode makes SLM operations more accessible. The proposed laser is with a threshold of ∼11 mW and an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of ∼55.75 dB, the 3-dB linewidth and linewidth compression ratio of the output laser reaches ∼550 Hz and ∼236, respectively. By changing the wavelength of the pump laser, the laser wavelength can be continuously tuned in a broad wavelength range, which is only limited by tunable range of Brillouin pump laser. The laser wavelength fluctuation of 0.02 nm and the OSNR fluctuation of about 3 dB in a 30-minute measure period, indicating that the laser is with a good stability.

Abstract:A high-performance wavelength-switchable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) fiber laser with ultra-narrow linewidth and high stability in C-band was proposed and demonstrated, mainly benefiting from the use of a wide-band chirped Moiré fiber Bragg grating (WB-CM-FBG) with 41 ultra-narrow channels. By combining the WB-CM-FBG with a manual tunable bandpass filter and using a subring cavity with a length of only 34 cm to efficiently stabilize the SLM lasing, we achieved switchable lasing operation among 41 wavelengths, with a switching-step of ~0.96 nm from 1526.592 nm to 1565.126 nm, covering the whole C-band, and obtained sub-kHz linewidth at every lasing wavelength. The high stability was validated by the measured slight fluctuations of lasing wavelength and optical power of <0.004 nm and <0.113 dB, respectively, in 1.5 h. Abstract:A multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser producing cylindrical vector beams with tunable central wavelength and wavelength spacing is presented and experimentally investigated. Owing to the inhomogeneous broadening characteristic of the Brillouin gain, stable multiwavelength lasing is achieved by combination of the cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering in the ultra-long single mode fiber and the wavelength selection of the fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Multiwavelength lasing with tunable wavelength spacing of about 0.09, 0.11, 0.17, 0.24 and 0.3 nm is achieved by adjusting the optical delay line in the Mach-Zehnder comb filter. With the sufficient pump power, multiwavelength lasing with more than 10 channels is obtained when the wavelength spacing is tuned to be about 0.09 nm. Through adjusting the flat-top tunable bandpass filter, the central lasing wavelength can be tuned from 1534.37 nm to 1570.06 nm continuously. Cylindrical vector beams with purity higher than 93% are produced through regulating polarization controllers on either side of the two-mode long-period grating serving as the mode convertor. Multiwavelength cylindrical vector beams with the largest number of channels and tuning range are obtained to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:A single-longitudinal-mode dual-wavelength distributed feedback fiber laser with a wavelength spacing of 0.312 rim is proposed and demonstrated. Based on two spatially separated resonant cavities in a single fiber Bragg grating made by a simple method, stable dual-wavelength lasing is established. Then, a 38.67-GRz microwave signal generated by beating the two lasing wavelengths is obtained with a 3-dB bandwidth of similar to 6 kHz and a frequency drift < 5 MHz without any feedback mechanism. As a potential application of this device, a tunable microwave source ranging from 18.67 to 58.67 GHz (with a small discontinuity) is proposed and partially demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable dual-wavelength laser with two Stokes cavities by combining two stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) effects. The 1064 nm laser is initially generated through diode-side-pumping a Nd:YAG laser crystal. Subsequently, the first Stokes wave is obtained using a MgO:LiNbO 3 crystal, and its wavelength can be continuously tunable. Once the first Stokes wave within the cavity reaches a sufficient strength, it can further interact with MgO:LiNbO 3 to produce cascaded SPS. The second Stokes wave is also continuously tunable by adjusting the angle between two Stokes cavities. This dual-wavelength laser offers flexible tunability as two Stokes waves oscillate in separate cavities. The optimal wavelengths of this dual-wavelength laser were 1073.7 nm and 1083.1 nm, with maximum output power of 560 mW and 610 mW respectively at a pump power of 52 W. The cascaded SPS offers a promising approach to extend the laser spectrum through the utilization of diverse laser crystals and nonlinear crystals.

Abstract:A novel multiwavelength linear-cavity fiber laser source using a strain-induced chirped fiber Bragg grating, a Sagnac interferemetric filter, and Erbium-Ytterbium codoped fibers is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The Sagnac interferemetric filter, which acts as a full-reflecting mirror, consists of a polarization-maintaining directional coupler and two pieces of polarization-maintaining fibers. The strain-induced chirped FBG, which acts as a partial-reflecting mirror, is achieved by bending a uniform FBG bonded at a slant onto the lateral surface of a simply supported beam. By tuning the strain-induced chirped FBG, desirable lasing wavelength and number can be easily achieved.
