Abstract:The emission of electromagnetic waves from a source within or near a non-trivial medium (with or without boundaries, crystalline or amorphous, with inhomogeneities, absorption and so on) is sometimes studied using the reciprocity principle. This is a variation of the method of Green's functions. If one is only interested in the asymptotic radiation fields the generality of these methods may actually be a shortcoming: obtaining expressions valid for the uninteresting near fields is not just a wasted effort but may be prohibitively difficult. In this work we obtain a modified form the reciprocity principle which gives the asymptotic radiation field directly. The method may be used to obtain the radiation from a prescribed source, and also to study scattering problems. To illustrate the power of the method we study a few pedagogical examples and then, as a more challenging application we tackle two related problems. We calculate the specular reflection of x rays by a rough surface and by a smoothly graded surface taking polarization effects into account. In conventional treatments of reflection x rays are treated as scalar waves, polarization effects are neglected. This is a good approximation at grazing incidence but becomes increasingly questionable for soft x rays and UV at higher incidence angles. PACs: 61.10.Dp, 61.10.Kw, 03.50.De
Dynamics of Quantum Correlations and Entanglement Generation in Electron-Molecule Inelastic Scattering

Abstract:The dynamics and processes involved in particle-molecule scattering, including nuclear dynamics, is described and analyzed by different quantum information quantities along the different stages of the scattering. The main process studied and characterized with the information quantities is the interatomic coulombic electronic capture (ICEC), an inelastic process that can lead to dissociation of the target molecule. The analysis is focused in a one-dimensional transversely confined $\text{NeHe}$ molecule model used to simulate the scattering between an electron $\text{e}^-$(particle) and a $\text{NeHe}^+$ ion (molecule). The time-independent Schrödinger equation (TISE) is solved using the Finite Element Method (FEM) with a self-developed Julia package FEMTISE to compute potential energy curves (PECs) and the parameters of the interactions between particles. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) is solved using the Multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) algorithm. The time dependent electronic and nuclear probability densities are calculated for different electron incoming energies, evidencing elastic and inelastic processes that can be correlated to changes in von Neumann entropy, conditional mutual information and Shannon entropies. The expectation value of the position of the particles, as well as their standard deviations, are analyzed along the whole dynamics and related to the entanglement during the collision and after the process is over, hence evidencing the dynamics of entanglement generation. It is shown that the correlations generated in the collision is partially retained only when the inelastic process is active.

Universal energy fluctuations in inelastic scattering processes

Abstract:Quantum scattering is used ubiquitously in both experimental and theoretical physics across a wide range of disciplines, from high-energy physics to mesoscopic physics. In this work, we uncover universal relations for the energy fluctuations of a quantum system scattering inelastically with a particle at arbitrary kinetic energies. In particular, we prove a fluctuation relation describing an asymmetry between energy absorbing and releasing processes which relies on the non-unital nature of the underlying quantum map. This allows us to derive a bound on the average energy exchanged. We find that energy releasing processes are dominant when the kinetic energy of the particle is comparable to the system energies, but are forbidden at very high kinetic energies where well known fluctuation relations are recovered. Our work provides a unified view of energy fluctuations when the source driving the system is not macroscopic but rather an auxiliary quantum particle in a scattering process.

Abstract:A electron of mass $m$, when electrically scatters of nucleus, of mass $M$, transfers momentum $q$ to the nucleus. The energy lost by electron is more than the energy gained by the nucleus. The resulting energy goes in exciting the atom to a higher energy state as in Frank Hertz experiment and sodium, neon, mercury vapor lamps, or ionization of atom as in bubble and cloud chamber experiments, or just production of X-rays as in Bremsstraulung. In this paper, we study these phenomenon. These experiments are inelastic scattering experiments. We remark, why neutrinos donot scatter and can penetrate earth, why muons travel further than electrons in materials and why a material like lead plate can slow down electrons and positrons efficiently. We look at the elastic scattering of electrons as in electron diffraction and electron microscopes. We look at scattering of electrons in the condensed matter, these phenomenon range from scattering of electrons of periodic potential, to give Bloch waves, scattering of electrons of phonons and impurities to give resistance, scattering of electrons of lattice to give cooper pairs and superconductivity. We study electron scattering from exchange potential as in Fermi liquid theory and resulting $T^2$ resistance at low temperatures. Electron scattering of exchange potential resulting in chemical reactions. We turn our attention to electron-proton scattering both eleastic and inelastic, as in deep inelastic scattering experiments and understand the independence of ineleastic cross-section of with respect to transferred momentum. We see, why we can just say that there are three quarks in proton from elastic cross-section. Our main contribution in this article is we are detailed at places, we find literature terse.

Abstract:Reciprocity is a fundamental symmetry of Maxwell's equations. It is known that reciprocity imposes constraints on transmission, absorption, and emission. Here, we reveal reciprocity constraints on reflection. We determine the sets of all attainable reflection coefficients of n-port scattering matrices with prescribed singular values, both with and without assuming reciprocity. Their difference establishes reciprocity constraints and nonreciprocal behaviors. As an application, we examine the conditions for all-zero reflections. Our results deepen the understanding of reciprocity in optics.
The Entanglement of Elastic and Inelastic Scattering

Abstract:The entanglement properties of systems in which elastic and inelastic reactions occur in projectile-target interactions is studied. A new measure of entanglement, the scattering entropy, based on the unitarity of the $S-$matrix (probability conservation), is suggested. Using simple models for both low- and high-energy interactions, the amount of entanglement is found to track with the strength of the inelastic interaction. The familiar example of the classical ``black disk", total absorption, model is found to correspond to maximum entanglement. An analysis of high-energy $pp$ scattering data shows that entanglement is near maximum for lab energies greater than about 1 GeV, showing that the total absorption model is a reasonable starting point for understanding the data.

On Entropy Growth in Perturbative Scattering

Abstract:Inspired by the second law of thermodynamics, we study the change in subsystem entropy generated by dynamical unitary evolution of a product state in a bipartite system. Working at leading order in perturbative interactions, we prove that the quantum $n$-Tsallis entropy of a subsystem never decreases, $\Delta S_n \geq 0$, provided that subsystem is initialized as a statistical mixture of states of equal probability. This is true for any choice of interactions and any initialization of the complementary subsystem. When this condition on the initial state is violated, it is always possible to explicitly construct a "Maxwell's demon" process that decreases the subsystem entropy, $\Delta S_n < 0$. Remarkably, for the case of particle scattering, the circuit diagrams corresponding to $n$-Tsallis entropy are the same as the on-shell diagrams that have appeared in the modern scattering amplitudes program, and $\Delta S_n \geq 0$ is intimately related to the nonnegativity of cross-sections.

An Area Law for Entanglement Entropy in Particle Scattering

Abstract:The scattering cross section is the effective area of collision when two particles collide. Quantum mechanically, it is a measure of the probability for a specific process to take place. Employing wave packets to describe the scattering process, we compute the entanglement entropy in 2-to-2 scattering of particles in a general setting using the $S$-matrix formalism. Applying the optical theorem, we show that the linear entropy $\mathcal{E}_2$ is given by the elastic cross section $\sigma_{\text{el}}$ in unit of the transverse size $L^2$ of the wave packet, $\mathcal{E}_2 \sim \sigma_{\text{el}}/L^2$, when the initial states are not entangled. The result allows for dual interpretations of the entanglement entropy as an area and as a probability. Since $\sigma_{\text{el}}$ is generally believed, and observed experimentally, to grow with the collision energy $\sqrt{s}$ in the high energy regime, the result suggests a "second law" of entanglement entropy for high energy collisions. Furthermore, the Froissart bound places an upper limit on the entropy growth.

Abstract:In the past century, electron scattering has mostly served as a powerful tool to measure the microscopic structure of gases, liquids, and solids in either a static or time-resolved manner. One common basis for these works is the independent atom model, which directly relates electron scattering signals to the atomic structure of matter. In this perspective, we explore the information content of electron scattering that goes beyond the independent atom model. We show that the small-angle limit of the electron scattering signal encodes the quantum mechanical fluctuation of the long-range Coulomb potential. This quantum fluctuation, described by the second moment of the dipole operator, is the root cause of the intermolecular van der Waals forces.

Abstract:We present universal relations between entanglement entropy, which quantifies the quantum correlation between subsystems, and the elastic cross section, which is the primary observable for high energy particle scattering, by employing a careful formulation of wave packets for the incoming particles. For 2-to-2 elastic scattering with no initial entanglement and subdividing the system along particle labels, we show that both the Rényi and Tsallis entropies in the final states are directly proportional to the elastic cross section in unit of the transverse size for the initial wave packets, which is then interpreted as the elastic scattering probability. The relations do not depend on the underlying dynamics of the quantum field theory and are valid to all orders in coupling strengths. Furthermore, computing quantum correlations between momentum and non-kinematic data leads to entanglement entropies expressed as various semi-inclusive elastic cross sections. Our result gives rise to a novel ``area law'' for entanglement entropy in a two-body system.

Backscattering in a helical liquid induced by Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron interactions: locality, symmetry, and cutoff aspects

Abstract:The combination of the time-reversal-symmetric single-particle backscattering field (commonly known as Rashba spin-orbit coupling) and non-backscattering electron interactions is generally expected to produce inelastic backscattering in 1D helical electron liquids at the edge of 2D topological insulators, as theoretically predicted in a number of works. An opposite conclusion of absent backscattering was reached in a recent work [H.-Y. Xie et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 086603 (2016)] for the "local" model of the backscattering field and interactions. Motivated to resolve this potential controversy, in the present work, we study backscattering effects employing fermionic perturbation theory and considering quite general forms of the backscattering field and electron interactions. We discover that backscattering effects are crucially sensitive to the locality properties of the backscattering field and electron interactions, to the symmetry of the latter, as well as to the presence or absence of the cutoff of the electron spectrum. We find that backscattering is indeed absent under the following assumptions: (i) local backscattering field; (ii.a) local or (ii.b) SU(2)-symmetric interactions; (iii) absent cutoff of the edge-state spectrum. However, violation of any of these conditions leads to backscattering. This also reconciles with the results based on the bosonization technique. We calculate the associated backscattering current, establish its low-bias scaling behavior, and predict a crossover between two different scaling regimes. The main implication of our findings is that backscattering of some magnitude is inevitable in a real system, although could be quite suppressed for nearly local backscattering field and interactions.

Abstract:Entropic dynamics is a framework for defining dynamical systems that is aligned with the principles of information theory. In an entropic dynamics model for motion on a statistical manifold, we find that the rate of changes for expected values is linear to the gradient of entropy with reciprocal (symmetric) coefficients. Reciprocity principles have been useful in physics since Onsager. Here we show how the entropic dynamics reciprocity is a consequence of the information geometric structure of the exponential family, hence it is a general property that can be extended to a broader class of dynamical models.

Abstract:In the last decades, the blossoming of experimental breakthroughs in the domain of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has triggered a variety of theoretical developments. Those have to deal with completely different situations, from atomically resolved phonon mapping to electron circular dichroism passing by surface plasmon mapping. All of them rely on very different physical approximations and have not yet been reconciled, despite early attempts to do so. As an effort in that direction, we report on the development of a scalar relativistic quantum electrodynamic (QED) approach of the inelastic scattering of fast electrons. This theory can be adapted to describe all modern EELS experiments, and under the relevant approximations, can be reduced to most of the last EELS theories. In that aim, we present in this paper the state of the art and the basics of scalar relativistic QED relevant to the electron inelastic scattering. We then give a clear relation between the two once antagonist descriptions of the EELS, the retarded dyadic Green function, usually applied to describe photonic excitations and the quasi-static mixed dynamic form factor (MDFF), more adapted to describe core electronic excitations of material. Using the photon propagator in a material, expressed in the relevant gauges, as a tool to understand the interaction between a fast electron and a material, we extend this relation to a newly defined quantity, the relativistic MDFF. The relation between the dyadic Green function and the relativistic MDFF does depend only on the photon propagator and not on the specifics of the particle (here, a fast electron) probing the target. Therefore, it can be adapted to any spectroscopy where a relation between the electromagnetic and electronic properties of a material is needed. We then use this theory to establish two important EELS-related equations. The first one relates the spatially resolved EELS to the imaginary part of the photon propagator and the incoming and outgoing electron beam wavefunction, synthesizing the most common theories developed for analyzing spatially resolved EELS experiments. The second one shows that the evolution of the electron beam density matrix is proportional to the mutual coherence tensor, proving that quite universally, the electromagnetic correlations in the target are imprinted in the coherence properties of the probing electron beam.

Abstract:Recently the authors developed a scattering approach that allows for a complete description of the steady-state physics of quantum-impurities in and out of equilibrium. Quantum impurities are described using scattering eigenstates defined ab initio on the open, infinite line with asymptotic boundary conditions imposed by the leads. The scattering states on the open line are constructed for integrable quantum-impurity models by means of a significant generalization of the Bethe-Ansatz which we call the Scattering Bethe-Ansatz (SBA). The purpose of the paper is to present in detail the scattering approach to quantum-impurity models and the SBA and show that they reproduce well-known thermodynamic results for several widely studied models: the Resonance Level model, Interacting Resonance Level model and the Kondo model. Though the SBA is more complex than the traditional Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) when applied to thermodynamical questions, the scattering approach (SBA) allows access to an array of new questions that cannot be addressed otherwise, ranging from scattering of electrons off magnetic impurities to nonequilibrium dynamics.
Inelastic Effects in Low-Energy Electron Reflectivity of Two-dimensional Materials

Abstract:A simple method is proposed for inclusion of inelastic effects (electron absorption) in computations of low-energy electron reflectivity (LEER) spectra. The theoretical spectra are formulated by matching of electron wavefunctions obtained from first-principles computations in a repeated vacuum-slab-vacuum geometry. Inelastic effects are included by allowing these states to decay in time in accordance with an imaginary term in the potential of the slab, and by mixing of the slab states in accordance with the same type of distribution as occurs in a free-electron model. LEER spectra are computed for various two-dimensional materials, including free-standing multilayer graphene, graphene on copper substrates, and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on cobalt substrates.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, we present a unified reciprocal quantum electrodynamics (QED) formulation of free-electron and quantum–light interaction. For electron–light interactions, we bridge the underlying theories of photon-induced near-field electron microscopy, laser-induced particle accelerators, and radiation sources, such as quantum free electron laser, transition radiation and Smith-Purcell effect. We demonstrate an electron–photon spectral reciprocity relation between the electron energy loss/gain and the radiation spectra. This ‘acceleration/radiation correspondence’ (ARC) conserves the electron energy, and photon number exchanged, that is, Δ E / ħω + Δ ν q = 0, and in the representation of a quantum electron wavepacket, displays explicit dependence on the history-dependent phase and shape of the wavepacket configuration. It originates from an interaction-induced quantum interference term that is usually ignored in Fermi’s golden rule analyses, but is kept in our combined quantum free electron–photon state formulation. We apply this formulation to both stimulated interaction and spontaneous emission of classical and quantum light by the quantum-featured electrons. The ‘spontaneous’ emissions of coherent states (‘classical’ light) are remarked and squeezed states of quantum light is shown to be enhanced with squeezing. This reciprocal QED formulation has promise for extensions to other fundamental research issues in quantum light and quantum matter interactions.

Scattering and reflection positivity in relativistic Euclidean quantum mechanics

Abstract:In this paper I discuss a formulation of relativistic few-particle scattering theory where the dynamical input is a collection of reflection-positive Euclidean covariant Green functions. This formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics has the advantage that all calculations can be performed using Euclidean variables. The construction of the Hilbert space inner product requires that the Green functions are reflection positive, which is a non-trivial constraint on the dynamics. In this paper I discuss the structure of reflection positive Green functions. I show that scattering wave operators exist when the dynamics is given by a Green function with the structure discussed in this work. Techniques for computing scattering observables in this Euclidean framework are discussed.

Abstract:Boltzmann equation requires some alternative simpler kinetic model like BGK to replace the collision term. Such a kinetic model which replaces the Boltzmann collision integral should preserve the basic properties and characteristics of the Boltzmann equation and comply with the requirements of non equilibrium thermodynamics. Most of the research in development of kinetic theory based methods have focused more on entropy conditions, stability and ignored the crucial aspect of non equilibrium thermodynamics. The paper presents a new kinetic model formulated based on the principles of non equilibrium thermodynamics. The new kinetic model yields correct transport coefficients and satisfies Onsager's reciprocity relationship. The present work also describes a novel kinetic particle method and gas kinetic scheme based on this linkage of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and kinetic theory. The work also presents derivation of kinetic theory based wall boundary condition which complies with the principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and can simulate both continuum and rarefied slip flow in order to avoid extremely costly multi-scale simulation.
